Hello- I have a few questions.

Hi Lisa, I was sleeved Jan. 7. My signature lists everything my insurance required me to go through. You are going to get a lot of different answers about what everyone had to do to prepare for surgery. For me I had to loose 10% of my weight prior to surgery. I don't regret the surgery at all, but that's not to say it's been easy. I would have never imagined something so simple like drinking Water could be so difficult. Or making sure you are getting in your Protein. Foods I loved pre-op I can no longer tolerate post-op. It definitely is a life changing surgery. I have stumbled a lot, but I am more conscious of carbs, sugar and protein (but not obsessed, yet lol). It does begin to get a little easier with time. Everyone's time frame (recovery) is very different. Congrats on your decision! Enjoy your journey.

    Looking for support

I think winter months are the hardest to lose weight with or without the sleeve. It's cold dark and depressing. Have u tried joining a gym? I find if I make myself go a few days a week I feel a little better. I've been at a stall for awhile and trying to get back to basics, adding protein shakes and lowering my food intake. Good luck, they weren't kidding when they said it's not the easy way out
  3. I actually only lost 20...29 was a typo. I've been getting on the treadmill 1-3 miles 5 days a week. I did start lifting some weights to firm up.

    Aetna Nervous

I have the same insurence and lost no weight and got approved.
  5. Omg I'm so excited and nervous for my doctors appointment on the 22nd. Been eating super healthy the past 3wks drinking tones of Water eating fruit an veggies Ect with not weight loss nor gain :/ hopping my doc apt will go perfect and everything will fall into place. Also have questions about lose skin, what's the best way to make sure lose skin doesn't happen. And if it does happen do insurances cover tummy tucks for lose skin caused by weight loss surgeries? Please tell me your story the good and the bad I wanna know everything.
  6. The thing about loose skin is, it's mostly out of your control. Exercise definitely can help but really it all boils down to genetics, skin elasticity, how much weight you have to lose, and age. It's unfortunate but some people are just going to have loose skin no matter what they do to try avoid it. Speaking from personal experience, I've had TONS of loose skin. I've lost over 200 pounds and seriously look like a Shar Pei naked. However, I will say this, I'll take the loose skin over the fat any day. I can hide the skin under clothes and look good- there was no hiding 200 pounds of fat. Btw, I am currently recovering from a surgery that was hernia repair/tummy tuck/skin removal combo. My surgery was about 2 weeks ago. It's a rough recovery but I think worth it, my tummy looks drastically different but amazing. If you want a look, I posted a thread about it here: http://www.lapbandtalk.com/topic/169905-tummy-tuck-before-after-pics/ Do what you can to reduce excess skin- drink lots of Water, exercise, don't smoke, and use a good firming lotion. But even if you do end up with excess skin? It can be removed with surgery and even if you opt not to have surgery it's so much better than fat. Best wishes!

pros and cons and life changing commitments

There's a great forum on obesityhelp.com for DS patients and those that are researching that specific procedure. If you'd like to solicit business for this particular surgical group, you may want to find a DS site similar to this one, or visit the OH forum. I appreciate your desire to have everyone do their research, but this sounds like a push for this particular group of surgeons that perform DS. They probably are great surgeons, and congrats to your friend that has had DS with great success. I've lost more than 140lbs in less than a year with VSG, and zero malabsorption. Oh yeah, and I lost it with eating ribeye steak and my cholesterol, and other labs are picture perfect. With DS, patients malabsorb more than just 10% of their fat intake. If we're going to tout all the good of a particular surgery, let's be real honest and disclose some of the disadvantages as well. Vitamin and nutrient deficiencies are common even for some of those that are very diligent with their vitamin/supplement regimen. I've read plenty of personal experiences showing that not all DS patients get to goal, or maintain their loss either. So, it's not foolproof. Each patient that chooses to have any of the weight loss surgeries must make a lifestyle change, and deal with their food demons. None of us can rely on our surgery to do all of the work.

    Aetna Nervous

Hello, I am so nervous. I just found this forum, and I am hoping to talk to people who have gone through the same thing. Today is my last weigh in for my 6 months. I have done the 6 month check in, bloodwork, the pre-tests, and nuturician. I have my psych evaluation on the 17th. One month I was up two pounds, stayed the same last month, but will be up 4 pounds today. However, overall I am 14 pounds down even with the gain. I am afraid that aetna will deny me for this, and only having a BMI of 38 and 41 in the past two years. However, I have PCOS and I had to go off my pills for the surgery this made me gain weight. Any advice?
  9. My 6 month weight in is Saturday 1/4/14 then I will have to wait until march to meet the surgeon, whew here wishing these days fly by.

    Seminar!!

Well, last night I went to the seminar. They mostly talked about Bypass but I knew they would. They do Bypass at that facility and LB is done out of the area at another facility. Listening to the Bypass discussion just helped me cement my decision though, so that was good. My insurance will pay for everything except co-pays and any travel expenses so that was good to find out. It was a huge block for me. I can't do the surgery unless they pay for it. I have some hoops to jump through, of course. My PCP needs to refer me to the Dietition and Psychiatry and once I've seen those 2 he needs to fill out an application to send to the surgeons. I e-mailed him this AM so I'll find out soon what he'll do. My one problem is that I've started this with him and he's leaving to go to another dept at the end of the month. I've asked him if he can keep my file just long enough to get the application done but I don't know that he can. If not, I have to hope that my new PCP goes along with what he and I started and doesn't mess this up. I also need to start a 20 week "Lifestyle and Weight Management" class. If I can get childcare, I'll start next Wednesday. The first 2 classes are in-take classes. The following 18 classes are part of an on-going class so the in-take are to document how much you weigh and get you up to speed on where the rest of the class is. She constantly has people starting and ending their sessions. The main reasons for class are to get your head on straight about the lifestyle change you're making and to help you lose the weight that the surgeons are going to require before surgery. For those of you with Kaiser {Northern CA}, it sounds like I'm being sent over to the Richmond facility. So, that's it! I guess I've started the process! I'll know better if my PCP is going to cooperate after I hear from him. Should be okay b/c he had to refer me to the seminar to begin with. It's just a matter of him being able to follow this through for me or making sure the new PCP will continue the process. I'm excited!
  11. A little history on me..... I have lost 38 lbs & want to lose 50-55 more. So, in total I'll lose about 90 ish. Plus I have had 3 babies & my belly really got BIG. Anyway, as I lose I can already see the skin wrinkling & sagging :tt2:. I'm so mad at myself for letting myself get so big over the years that I ruined my body. My skin will never go back. So, after I lose all this weight I'll have that to deal w/. It really sucks! There's no way I can affford a TT. CAn any one suggest a good surgen in Boston area? What is a round about cost for TT? Thank you!
  12. Congratulations! And it's certainly not the easy way out. You'll still have to decide what goes into your body post-op. That won't change. Make as many positive lifestyle changes as you can along the way to surgery! It will make post-op living that much easier and the weight loss that much more successful! Best of luck!
  13. I was wondering how long you have to go without losing pounds until you convince yourself that you are not in a stall but instead have lost as much as you are going to lose? I have not even lost 50% of my weight and have slowed down SO MUCH. I know that I am not getting to excercise like I would because I am a CPA in the middle of tax season and working 12 and 13 hour days. I am very careful with my diet and nutrition and track carbs, calories, and proteins constantly. Do you think that when (in a couple of weeks) I start exercising more I will start losing again? I am a very positive person and have not thrown in the towel, but probably just a little tired and let down slightly (probably just because of tax season). I just wanted to know all of you sleeve buddies' opinions.
  14. I have been an extremely slow loser from day 1. I had surgery on July 31, 2010 and have only recently reached my halfway mark. It sucks, but everyone assures me it will come off in my own time. It is still frustrating when I see people losing so much weight so fast. I have finally started to calm down since i have reached the halfway point. Your weight will come off too. I do believe stress and other factors play a part. I still gain 3-4 pounds the week of my period. I know its going to happen, but it still makes me crazy. Just keep on keeping on and you will get there. Good luck!

    Still learning....

It has been almost 4 months since my surgery & overall I feel incredibly fortunate to have had this procedure, and have adjusted well. I have had very good weight loss and feel so much better.... However, I am am confused about fills! I had my first fill just about three weeks after surgery.. and within three days had to have half of it taken out. I was so uncomfortable. Second fill, about 5 weeks after that went fine. Third fill was yesterday. I drank the water exactly as instructed while in doctor's office. No problem. Drank another couple bottles of water during the rest of the day, without any problem. Had a bit of broth yesterday evening, and that seemed to go fine. But over the course of the evening-- and overnight-- I started to feel increasingly uncomfortable. Throughout the night, burping, hiccuping, and spitting up. Now 24 hrs after the fill I still don't feel good. I am afraid to even drink anything. Is there that much swelling that goes on after a fill? Will this subside? Do I need to get an unfill? And if so, how do I manage thru the snowstorm until doc is back in his office? Any tips for managing this?

    Hello!!

35 lbs is something to be proud of!! As you know, the weight doesn't just fall off. I don't know about you, but I have battled weight pretty much my whole life and this has defiantely been a life changing event for me. My friends and family are all in "aw" about my change too. Thank you for your response so quickly.
  17. The VSG procedure has been the best decision of my life (other than marrying the love of my life). It is truly up to me how successful the surgery will be. The numbers on the scale went steadily down and I felt that there was no need to exercise, but when I saw the numbers level off, I had to admit that exercise is a big part of this journey. 10, 15, or 20 minutes a day makes a big difference....and it is so much easier to move. Besides this website and the Big Book on the Gastric Sleeve, I rely heavily on my fitness Pal and my fitbit. These tools really keep me in check as far as nutrition, how much I move in a day and my weight. I think if I had started an exercise regimen earlier, I would probably be another 10 lbs. lighter already. So I am looking forward to the spring weather to motivate me. My Dr. told me that My goal should be to lose another 35 by my surgiversary and I am determined to meet that goal. These forums are so motivating and inspirational to me and the challenges such as the Easter challenge really help to keep me in the game. Thanks to everyone for all of your posts, comments and advice.
  18. Way to go! I believe exercise is a key component in successful weight loss. Not just because it burns calories, but it also helps prevent muscle loss as your body loses weight. I know that my weight loss wouldn't have been as good if I hadn't been exercising on a regular basis. I had to find ways to continue burning calories at the same rate as I was right after surgery. Since I wasn't carrying around the extra weight, my body didn't have to work as hard to get around. I've only done walking as my primary exercise, but I do vary it up by going to walking tracks and park trails. I like a variety of hills and obsticals to keep things from getting boring. Back in October, I started wearing a backpack with a few books in it for added weight then got a weighted vest in November. The vest had the added benefit of working my core and leg muscles in a new way. It's hard to make a sharp turn with a 20 lb vest. :-P

    High protein HELL!!

Well, you wont get any arguments from me that high Protein diets can be hell. Its not a way I care to eat at ALL. I also get nauseated from heavy protein meals, and shakes and protein products like bars never fail to give me very offensive gas - "protein farts" are quite a recognised phenomenon if you google it, lol. But - are you including lots of berries and leafy green vegies to flesh out your diet and provide some fibre? I hardly think breaking out and eating watermelon is such a crime. But the trouble is that pre op diet is meant to shrink the liver and carbs have to be restricted to ensure all the glycogen in your liver is used up. So like it or not, its something you have to stick to. But if its any hope to you, I've never done a high protein low carb diet since surgery, never drank Protein Shakes or avoided bread and Pasta, I lost plenty of weight and I lost it easily.

  22. Has anyone tried Herbalife after WLS? Heard anything about it good/bad? Anyone that did try did you lose/gain etc.
  23. Those of you in the "green zone" (at optimum fill-level for hunger control and weight loss) what is your daily calorie goal? My surgeon initially told me 800-1,000 calories a day was goal, but I'm struggling to keep it below 1400 most days now. 800-1,000 seems really low to me. I know I'm not in the green zone yet. I'm three months out, and still in bandster hell. I'm just looking for some general figures.

    3 days Post op sleeve

Just wanted to introduce myself and be a part of the support group. I was sleeved Friday 3/10/17 and now 3 days Post-op. I haven't lost any weight yet, hoping it's because of inflammation or water retention or something. Looking forward to sharing my journey.

    How do you eat after?!

Don't get too discouraged. This will pass soon. Especially when you see the weight coming off. I got really upset with my inability to get my nutrients in and having absolutely no taste bud consistency. Tastes good, then I'm sick of it. That happened so many times. But after 4 weeks out of work being bored , it finally leveled out. It's worth it. I have so much energy. By the way. Remember to walk every day. You'll drop the weight so much faster. I lost like 30 lbs in 3 weeks.
