Weightloss surgery won’t work for me
SarcasticGastric replied to Yo-yo girl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have this fear as well. I even took my paranoia a step further after finding some research that there's a genetic factor to how well bariatric surgery works (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3644642/). I actually did a DNA test through AncestryDNA and uploaded the results to Promethease so that I could see if I have one of the "bad" genes and I do. In the study I linked to it correlated with losing about %5 percent less body weight. For me that would be me being an extra 20 lbs heavier and that's just one gene. So if I have 200 lbs to lose and I can expect to lose, on average, 70-75% of my excess body weight with RNY, that's 140-150 lbs. With that gene I have I might have to adjust that to 120-130. At 120 lbs lost I wouldn't really be where I want to be, but I'd be MUCH better off than I have been. In all honesty, I sort of regret checking this gene. At the end of the day I don't think it makes sense to let 20 lbs influence my decision and it's just one more thing to discourage me. In case you're wondering, something like 95-96% of people have the "good" gene. I'm one of the "lucky" few with one of the bad variants (there's another variant that is even worse, but it is VERY rare). It's also possible I have other genes that will influence my success, for the good or the bad. I think the science will get better over time, but right now I don't think there's a great way to know how you're going to do without just taking the leap. I haven't officially made a decision, but I'm leaning pretty heavily toward RNY. I may never be thin, but I think I can be much less fat and that has enormous health benefits, even if I never come close to my ideal weight. We shouldn't let perfect be the enemy of good. -
There are a few ateas, 2 are Louisiana and Florida where it may be no more than $8000. but they are few and far between and occasionally the one in Florida ran specials.I want my surgery at a Center of Excellence hospital where they have the best doctors , dedicated bariatric wings or floors and are up to date, on the cutting edge of research etc. Luckily I do have insurance, if you don't you have to self pay or go out of the country. UK people go to Belgium, Estonia, Turkey or Switzerland. US and Canadians go to Mexico, if I were going there the only place would be BariatricPalMX, our founder Alex Brecher, helped found it, surgeon's are as good or better than ones above both borders, Alex trusted them enough to have surgery himself there recently. Otherwise there a few other good alternatives but most fly-by- night conveyer belt, patient and $,in, slip slap, patient out and on his own, no follow-up. I love me a little too much to go through that dog and pony show? How about YOU?

Anyone else allergic to artificial sugar ??
Frustr8 replied to Ernie D's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Trial and error like the poster above, remove from your diet-better put it back in - bingo bad symptoms. Actually not an allergy, more an intolerance but nothing you want to fool around with. And if you are masochistic enough to enjoy the pain you belong on Psychological Pals instead Bariatric Pals. Ho-okay?😓 -
I respect that you have friends in the nursing field, I would highly recommend you contact the nursing staff that surrounds your surgeon that conducted the surgery because they are trained specifically in Bariatrics, not to say that your friends may not be. Additionally, it keeps your doctor abreast of your current conditions as you will have more follow up appointments in the near future. Yes, I experienced nausea and stomach cramping, both were addressed with medication prescribed by my doctor and mine already sent me home with some chewable medication for nausea after I was released after surgery.

Jenn1 is absolutely correct, to amplify it also, if you are on a 1200 or less calorie diet, you are getting enough to keep on living, you're starting to melt off, your fat, which has been your insulation, reason 1. reason 2 you just don't have enough, calories for your inner furnace to put out much heat. You will eventually level out, although you may always be a little more sensitive to temperature changes, you'll be out of the sweatsuits and thermal underwear on high Summer soon. Major surgery is inherently a shock,to the system, sometimes for itself, sometimes for slight blood loss. Another reason to take your bariatric vitamins like they told you to. Gosh I hope my own surgical office has some good suggestions, better than doubling up on my Centrum Silver, some people have said some kinds are yucky-poo.😪👎

Can it be a secret?
Orchids&Dragons replied to lessismore1001's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
If you want to keep it secret, tell NO ONE. My husband spilled the beans to his sister within a few days (she's a nurse) because HE needed support. (Don't discount this possibility). I had told my boss and a friend at work (she had had bariatric surgery and was kind of my inspiration and source of information). Well, she was hospitalized for an unrelated problem for several weeks and during one of her phone conversations with HER boss, she asked if I had had my surgery yet. She just wasn't thinking. I do understand, a month in the hospital can scramble anyone's brain. Long story short, her boss didn't know it was a secret and congratulated me for my quick recovery/back to work in front of an interdepartmental meeting! Stuff happens! -
Can it be a secret?
Healthy_life2 replied to lessismore1001's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Is it realistic to not want to make it public? I also did not disclose my medical procedure. Only told my family and support people. It's hard to keep a secret or hide rapid weight loss. Once people see your body changing.. They may speculate cancer or bariatrics....Let them speculate. It's none of their business. You don't owe anyone an explanation. _______________________ Some things you may experience: Weight loss phase: Your weight loss seems to be that topic of conversation. It's annoying and uncomfortable at times.... You will get questions on how you did it, people ask for weight loss advice, comments on the way you look, comments on what you are eating and the amount you eat. Maintaining: Once you get to your goal/maintaining. Weight loss stops being the topic of conversation.....Life is normal. -
6 days post - looking for advice
Frustr8 replied to PJAY117's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Raptly reading this all, I won't be a sleeve but many of these things could be me in the future. Your biggest forest scar is where they pulled your stomach remnant out, I would not be exempt because in. bypass the same place is where surgeon puts his bigger gauge instruments.,I guess you'd have to have an endoscopic sleeve to avoid, this, but I guess they have their own cast of problems. No free rides in Bariatrics, are there?😓 -

Difficulties eating, and taking medications

I’m just going to throw something random out in this thread. Obviously I’m still not keeping lots down, but I’ve accidentally discovered that if I have something red, the odds of my vomiting skyrocket. I’ve been doing only ice and crystal light lemonade today, and I’ve only thrown up twice. I’m wondering if perhaps I’ve developed a sensitivity to red dye. Since I couldn’t keep my Bariatric chewies down, I bought some flintstones vitamins today because I’m something is better than nothing right? Wasn’t paying attention, chewed up a red one and 5 minutes later it came right back up. I know red 40 can cause hyperactivity in kids (and it actually made my insomnia worse when I was using the cherry sf koolaid). Now I’m wondering if it’s possible that the red dye is messing with me. I’m going to avoid anything red until my appointment on Monday and see how that goes. I just thought it was a weird development. How would you have reacted?
moondoggie1983 replied to EsoKev's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had this in the ER a couple days ago when I went in for dehydration. The nurse only personally knew one person who had had a Bariatric Surgery and it was her ex who was 500 lbs. She asked me in a very honest manner why I did it when I wasn’t super heavy like that. We ended up having a really nice discussion about comorbities and such. I even showed her my 4 small and well healing tummy incisions. She was coming from a place of honest curiosity and I got to have a nice moment helping her learn a little more about the subject. When she said I didn’t look big enough to need it compared to the 500 lb guy she knew, I just said Thank You! I’m not overly sensitive about someone saying something like that. I never assume they’re being a jerk and implying that I should have just dieted and crap. Honestly, most people, especially health care people, aren’t back handed like that. I honestly took it as a compliment and then we had a nice conversation for like 20 minutes and she learned new stuff. It worked out well for all involved. Is it bad that I just don’t want to try losing weight again?
Danny Paul replied to jultrim18's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I too am a yo yo dieter. Losing x amount of weight only to regain it and then some. My reason for WLS was for my health since I had many co morbidities. I lost 60lbs and my diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and other diseases are gone or are very manageable. I recently went on a vacation at a place I go to often. Around my hotel is a place that makes a particular pastry which I can only get there. Day one I bought one just to savor it, eat it and put it behind me. Unfortunately, I ate one each and every day that I was on vacation. My rationalization was, I can't get these at home and I'm on vacation so I am allowed to eat them. I was wrong, I knew I was wrong but I did not stop myself from eating them. Upon my return I sought a therapist who specializes in abnormal behaviors.(I couldn't find one that specializes in bariatric patients) I soon realized that I have a problem with food. I am a compulsive eater and WLS alone would not cure me. My therapist also suggested that I join Overeaters Anonymous (OA) I have a great sponsor who speaks to me each day and I go to meetings which gives me support. For me, WLS was only a jump start to weight loss. If I did nothing else I would have gained back the weight over time because as SillyKity said "It will not fix your head." I am really beginning to see that the WLS was only the beginning of my getting healthier it wasn't the end. I have a lot more work ahead of me and I'm glad that I realized that I had a problem and there are avenues to help me correct or at least work around it. I've learned a lot about myself and why I have the relationship I do with food. I still need to find out more though. Please don't think that WLS will solve all of your weight related problems, it looks as if you might need to look for a support system to help you succeed. Good luck and remember you are not alone. -
Liquid post-op diet sucks
sillykitty replied to Kay07's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In my liquid stage I really loved Trader Joe's Tomato and Roasted Red Pepper soup. If you don't have a Trader Joe's near you, I think Pacific actually makes it, and you can buy their branded version. I also made and blended lentil soup. I made it well seasoned with herbs and spices. I added a splash of red wine vinegar to my serving. I've also found some of the soups here on Bariatric Pal to be asty, especially the Beef & Vegetable, Chicken w Pasta and Vegan Lentil. All the soups were savory and helped balance all the sweet protein drinks. -

moondoggie1983 replied to Charlisnewchapter's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not so much. I’m on trileptal 3 times a day. I just got the liquid delivered today because I haven’t been able to get the tablets down. I also take lamictal and that won’t go either so I just got the ODT version of that. $89! The klonopin and lunesta I can keep down long enough to get some benefits, but the trazadone is also a no go. And the chewable Bariatric vitamins and calcium? Forget about it! That’s straight to barf city! Basically I just puke all the time now. I had been concerned that the VSG wasn’t working initially because I only lost like 3 lbs in the first 5 days. Thanks to not holding anything down I’m down 17lbs in 9 days. Everything went so well the first 5 days! I should have known it would go to poop soon! I have terrible luck. Almost 3 years out...why still high protein and low carb?
Healthy_life2 replied to ForLfKlovr's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
Only my opinion.. I had a few sessions with an eating disorder therapist.... Your situation with the therapist may be a few things Sometimes therapist see a fine line between eating disorders and bariatrics...She may be trying to see if you are afraid of foods, have extreme views of good and bad foods and following rigid rules. Yes, We have healed from surgery, Thats a non issue. Protein, and adding healthy carbs is a standard bariatric maintaining instructions by our dieticians. Ask yourself . how rigid are you about following low carb high protein....Do you indulge once in a while? Are you still in the process of finding what works for you personally and your body to maintain weight? What does healthy eating mean to you? The mental side of bariatrics sometimes is fighting with the former fat person that fears regain. Wishing you the best Jenn -
Almost 3 years out...why still high protein and low carb?
RickM replied to ForLfKlovr's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
There's really no need for it, even during the weight loss period. We concentrate on protein early out because that is essential and there is no replacement - no supplements other than protein drinks until we can get by on real food. But even early out, our diets aren't really high protein, but rather "just right" protein to meet our needs; it's only high protein relative to everything else that we can, for a time, get from pills. Protein consumption later on, in maintenance and beyond, doesn't need to be any higher, but other things will be higher to go along with it, as our calorie needs increase from loss to maintenance. For an average or shorter than average woman, 60g per day of protein is usually considered to be plenty (if not more than plenty.) The only real exception to this is for those who get into body building and need extra protein for added muscle growth. The low carb part has never really been part of the "bariatric" diet, but is simply a carry over from the currently popular fad diets in the weight loss industry. Classic bariatric diets are simply protein first and then whatever else fits after; they are by default low carb and low fat, so no effort needs to be put into that aspect of an eating plan. Carbohydrates don't lead to any more weight gain long term than fats or protein does, rather it is the excess of any or all of them that leads to weight gain. It is only current diet mythology that preaches that low carb is needed to lose or maintain weight (because they still have lots of low carb diet products to sell....) -
Bariatric haul! What have you bought for your journey or plan to buy?
magpie26 replied to Yo-yo girl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
make batches and batchs of bone bone broth weekly, chicken and beef! For the best flavor for beef you should roast your marrow bones first, the cook the onions a little, tomato paste will bring richness as well as some soy sauce and other veggie. More steps but worth it. I use an instapot, takes 2 hours! If anyone invests in anything I would recommend an awesome blender and an instapot! I've used mine probably 5 times a week and make everything in it, so convenient when your family won't cook after surgery, they did figure out the instapot though! Beef bone broth has up to 10 grams of protein! And for me, personally. I found that I probably used MAYBE 75% or less post op. The shakes I had suddenly I couldn't stomach, protein20 water= disgusting to me, sugar free stuff in general bothered me but I can usually eat it depending what it is. You'd think blended chicken (pre-op) sounds disgusting but if you're like me and was on liquids for a full month, it was pure heaven! I added fat free gravy (homemade) omg seriously, I got to chew! The only thing in that bariatric measuring tool from Amazon are the scoops, the rings may be ok later, but I felt dumb because i have a scale and measuring cups and spoons. My best investments I made were: my $10 scale, baby spoon/forks, big water bottle and 4 oz tiny TupperwAre $1.89/each , my Cabot whey powder $14, (I put that in smoothies or in my yogurt) oh and the surgery! My instapot and blender and immersion blender i already had. HW: 303 SW:283 CW: 259 Loss: 44 GOAL 1: 175 GOAL 2: 160 -

I’m about 3.5 years post-surgery, and I don’t follow the Bariatric diet at all. I became very active (swimming, biking, running) after surgery and my food intake was all wrong for my athletic performance and training needs. So I switched over from a Bariatric nutritionist to a sports nutritionist and never felt better. It’s important to balance your macronutrients to fit your activity level, watch your caloric intake, monitor your weight, yadda yadda. But no, you don’t need to eat like a new patient forever. -
Hi KennyB, I'm in Ohio, but there is a sizable .contingent of Keystone Staters on Bariatric Pal, if you let them know what hospital you plan going to there may be veterans of that hospital who may have special knowledge, to share with you. Ask any questions you like, okay?😝

Aetna questions....any insurance question
Chrisb428 replied to Gotta win 4me's topic in Insurance & Financing
I don't know about your particular plan, but my Aetna has a 6 month requirement. I had already been seeing my pcp, endocrinologist, and a dietitian for 2 months for weight loss before my initial bariatric consult and was told they wouldn't count. I had to start from that point. Yours may be different, that was my experience. -
2 weeks out and feel like I have a tight corset on...normal?
Rainbow_Warrior replied to Charity G's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Normal for some. Sounds like the time to telephone your bariatric clinic and/or surgeon for advice ... "to be sure to be sure" as my Irish pals say! -
Hey everyone, I will be starting a new job the 1st week of June and at the beginning of July, I will be able to sign up with Aetna insurance through my new job. I was given information that Bariatric surgery is covered under the plan and that there are 3 consecutive months that I will have to be on a physician-supervised plan. This week I went to see my PCP so that she could start me on a plan, thinking that the insurance company will take the documentation when the surgical center submits the paperwork. Also, I made an appointment with the surgical center but they cant get me in until the end of next month. ***So,that's why I opted to start the plan with my pcp. Am I moving to fast? Will I still have to go more than 3 consecutive months being that I do have the insurance yet (Will my 3 consecutive months start when I start on the insurance plan, only?)? Is it ok, to move ahead with the nutritional plan? Must I wait until I have the insurance? Any advice is needed. Thanks!
-
My next appointment is next Friday...I am praying I can move on to soft foods. I know food should be off our minds, but I want to eat "healthy" solids and start doing all these bariatric friendly receipes...Im really excited about eating dehydated Fava beans. Gosh, who gets excited about that? Only people on a liquid diet that just had bariatric surgery because its like a step up from liquids..lol
