Questions for those One Year post-op.
kulita replied to Butterflyhigh's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You can STILL eat many of the things you love.... just a lot less of it. I am almost 1 year out and I will answer this to let you in on how I am doing. Can you eat a whole apple? Yes Can you eat rice and Pasta without discomfort? Yes, I can eat these, however, eating too much of it is not good for weight loss. I know of some people who can not tolerate these foods with the sleeve and some that can only slightly tolerate it. Then there are others, like me who can eat this just fine. Do you ever have the occasional glass of wine with dinner? I am not a drinker so I no wine for me, but I do have drinks with my meals. Is it a no-no? I think this is dependent upon who you ask. Also, I have noticed that when I do have drinks with my meals it fills me up faster so I dont eat as much- but then I do get hungrier later on. How have your close relationships been effected by your weight loss? Everyone around me has been real supportive. I have been honest with those close to me as much as I wanted them to know without becoming the 'food police' over me. My relationship with my husband has improved and so has our late night activities Are you able to quickly drink a glass of Water on a hot day or after a workout? I can down a 16 oz bottle of water in 10 minutes. A glass... maybe 5 min If you were an emotional eater, what behavior have you replaced the emotional eating with? This is a good one. I am still struggling with this. As I ate out of boredom, stress, excitement, and sadness. The boredom usually exists when I am at the computer typing and that is here to stay. I have to always have something to drink next to me, and I am not talking about Crystal Crack (Crystal Lite). The a drink like water with frozen blueberries often will fill me up and keep me hydrated. Do you have any sadness associated with the inablilty to eat a large portion of something incredibly delicious? Oh boy! I did at first. I was a huge foodie and loved really good foods. In fact Food was often seen as a good friend back then. It really hit me when I was able to move into solid foods and hubby started making Texas sized steaks (that cover the whole dinner plate) and I looked at it as if I could still eat it all, but physically i couldn't and it didn't quite register in my brain that it wasn't possible. When Fondue night came around a buffet of little delights was all around me and all i could do was nibble on a few things while everyone else was gorging themselves full with delight. I WANTED TO BE LIKE THAT at that time period but ONLY in that moment. That was when I realized that I did have an eating problem and I let my emotions take over me. Not only was I eating HUGE portions but I would often eat to feel happy. I think around 5 months PO I became more settled with the thought that this was indeed permanent and old behaviors fell to the way side and new behaviors kicked in. -
Well meaning people
LilMissDiva Irene replied to jovigrl62's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First of all, CONGRATS ON 100 POUNDS LOST!!! Second, what you are eating is a NORMAL serving. Most don't even know what that looks like, and yes even thin skinny folks. They are lucky they can eat more and not gain. However, it's not for them to tell you, you are starving yourself because you aren't. I wouldn't even respond to be honest, how do you respond to that? You can simply say that you are eating a single serving - nothing more nothing less, and it is working for you. They can take it or they can leave it. Wishing you well on the rest of your journey! -
Let that fear motivate you to gain knowledge you would have probably never have had without this site. "There is nothing to fear but fear itself!"

Is it normal to menstrual Bleed after surgery
piercedqt78 replied to diana89131's topic in The Gals' Room
I was told that yes it is normal. You store excess Estrogen in your fat cells and as you lose weight you release the excess hormones, so it can trigger a cycle. As you lose weight you can also become more fertile. -
Questions for those One Year post-op.
Jenny12 replied to Butterflyhigh's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm almost 14 months post op. Can you eat a whole apple? Yes, easily. Can you eat rice and Pasta without discomfort? Yes, no discomfort for me. I can eat anything. Do you ever have the occasional glass of wine with dinner? Once or twice. I used to love wine, but lately it just tastes bitter to me. I don't think this is a sleeve issue. How have your close relationships been effected by your weight loss? I don't think they have been affected much, honestly. I'm a bit more confident in my day to day encounters, but that's about it. Are you able to quickly drink a glass of Water on a hot day or after a workout? Yes, not a problem. If you were an emotional eater, what behavior have you replaced the emotional eating with? Shopping Do you have any sadness associated with the inablilty to eat a large portion of something incredibly delicious? No, not at all. Maybe a little in the beginning. I'm content with the amount of food I can eat. Not too much, not too little. -

who is the worst doc in mexico
mac0321 replied to smsmithart's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Not surprising--most people in health care feel that way. Mexico is much cheaper and in my opinion I received better care. Many health care professionals feel threatened by that. My own family physician was not happy when I told him I went to Mexico but then I shared my experience and he saw the results so now he is more willing to accept that you can get good care. You will be very pleasantly surprised at the excellent care you can receive in TJ, Monterey, and other places who cater to american weight loss surgery patients and do not have to deal with restrictive HMO rules or insurance issues. They have more time to spend with you, the patient. Just do your research and talk to some of the bandsters on the many boards out there. You will quickly learn which docs have the biggest fans and which do not. -
Something else to consider is that you also may still be a little swollen since you are only 3 wks post op... I know that I was swollen ( on the inside of course.. LOL) for close to 3 or 4 wks... and when you are swollen, that sometimes will affect your weight too

I too have never been able to reach my goal weight, sigh ..... I've been within 5 lbs but then gained back 5 and have been fighting to maintain with many ups and downs ever since. It seems to be the way it is for many of us. I think it's difficult on multiple levels. First we lose like crazy and then it suddenly seems to come to a screeching halt. The honeymoon is over!! At least we have a fighting chance now. But none of us are used to success with weight loss so we're hyper critical of ourselves for not attaining a goal that may be unrealistic for our bodies. I also struggle with so much anxiety about regaining my weight and stress over it which only makes me want to eat more! Lastly, our body and our body image may not be in agreement. I still feel so damn fat! WTF?????

Psych evaluation- what is it like?
BigBuc replied to GigiLane's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I LOVED my psych evaluation. I'm a therapist so I walked in thinking she couldn't tell me anything new. I was soooo wrong! She asked questions about my history as a child related to my weight, my support system, family history, etc. I actually realized that, although family was present, they weren't very supportive at all. My evaluation was very eye opening. I will go back after the surgery, I'm sure! Dawnie_doo I'm not a therapist, but I enjoyed mine too, aside from the 450+ multiple guess quiz. The final written result was exactly what I'd said about myself. Hah... I'm old enough to know myself I guess. Sent from my XT1575 using the BariatricPal App -

Dietician Messed Me Up
fntasa98 replied to fntasa98's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep! It is frustrating. I feel like I'm trying to make up for 3 months of weight loss in 2 weeks. I agree about eating light. All I've eaten today is a 1/2 of a pickle. 3 more hours until the moment of truth. -
Hello from southern california
NurseShay replied to Tracie515's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Welcome to the forum! I'm in san diego, ca so very very southern cali! =) Now that you're done with all the hoops & hurdles the process will go fast so congrats! The pre op & couple wks of post op dieting can be difficult & yes you may still be giving a lot of the carbs you like (flour bread, rice & such) but its still a worthwhile experience. To have lost so much weight on atkins you're sure to do well with your band! Best of luck! -
Hello from southern california
JoiaRox replied to Tracie515's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Welcome - sounds like you're ready to rock! I'm in Bakersfield, CA...we still consider ourselves Southern . Best of luck to you on your journey - it's the best decision I ever made for myself! And to the last girl who talked about discussing her true weight? Wow - same here! I'm not ashamed anymore of telling people I work with, on Facebook, etc. of how much I actually weigh or what I started out at (338). I'm also not ashamed of posting "before" pictures...to me, they're all badges of honor that I can look back on throughout the journey and say, "Yeah, I'm down almost 50 pounds...I'm awesome!" I've found the encouragement from my friends and colleagues amazing as well - yay for being public and no longer hiding behind our weight! -
Does Anyone Have Heart Failure Or Other Issue Having This Surgery?
lovex5 replied to ReduceReuseRecycle-Me!'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't have heart disease but it runs in my family on both sides. Very scary. I do have kidney disease + only 1 kidney which is my main reason for having this done. If I wind up needing a new kidney in the future I won't get it being obese. I want to do this now, while I'm somewhat young and healthy enough to lose the weight. Good luck to everyone! -

Any Lap Bands converting to the Sleeve?
sglamb replied to Dylan5466's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had my lap band slip after 7 years in April. I just had my sleeve on 6/26. I'm not going to lie. It hurt. A lot. But I did have some additional Complications due to chronic steroid use from arthritis. Surgery was 2.5 hours. So, I'm attributing it to that. I stayed an extra day bc they had to staple, stitch and glue my new stomach. But I'm completely independent now. No pain Meds for over 36 hours. Waiting on doc to show up so I can go Home. My Husband asked me on the Fay of surgery if it was worth it and I said no. Now, I'm saying yes as long as the post lap band weight comes off. Good Luck!! -

Weight lifting questions
Banned member replied to mike1107's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think I waited until about 7-8 weeks but I'm not quite sure since it's been a while. I lift about once a week and lift heavy weights. I'm still sore from my Friday weight lifting session :/ -

7 weeks post op down 33 lbs

I figured you were smaller. I have friends that had the surgery and lost so much in the first week and month. I'm losing slower but my weight was less. -
Has this helped anyone's back?
Hello Bean replied to Ninababy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think it depends on where the disk problems are. I have a herniated disk in my neck (C5, C6). If the disk problem is lower back, I feel very certain that getting excess weight off will help a great deal. I need to get the weight off, but that will not help future problems in my neck. I did PT and had the epidural procedure and have been pain free (knock wood) for over two years. If I were you, I would not have the back surgery, continue your exercise, have the lap band surgery, and feel pretty confident that the weight loss will alleviate some or most of your lower back pain. I personally would not have back surgery unless I were unable to walk without it. PT can do wonderful things. A good physical therapist is priceless! Good luck to you. -
Hi, see your surgeon, run the questions by him/her. I am in the sweet spot, too! But, I have gained during maintenance due to my own fault. My surgeon, even tho' he is supportive, will not fill me further because I can't tolerate any more fill than 5cc. If he puts in even 5.5 the barium will not pass through. So, I am watching my calorie count and doing what any good dieter would do to take off the lbs I gained while not doing what I should do!!!But, anyway, if you are in your sweet spot, and near goal, I think to hang in there and decrease your calories (if you are at normal count like 1200-1400). I need to eat under 1200 to lose and 1400 to stay the same. Best wishes, I hope that helps. Karen
