  1. Hello, does anyone know of any good cosmetic dentists in Tijuana? I am going to Mexico for my sleeve on 2/19, and I'd like to also have a dental consultation while I'm there. I want to get an estimate on some veneers.

    Not losing weight

It could be worse. I'm 2 months out and I only lost 7 lbs last month. And that is with tracking, counting, measuring, and exercising faithfully. Sent from my Nexus 10 using the BariatricPal App

    Slow weight loss?

I have learned your body is going to do what it's going to do. I'm 7 months out and am down 45 lbs when a lot of people have already reach goal. I'm also a revision patient, had the band in 2007 and converted to sleeve November 20, 2013. Just stick to the rules and you will lose, slow sometime and sometimes fast. I will give you an example, for the past 3 months I have not done anything as far as weight loss goes, I've bounces around with the same 5 pounds for months. Everyone says after month 6 it slows down and I was really worried because it was already slow but suddenly from month 6 to 7 my weightloss has done the opposite and I'm almost down 10 lbs this month, so everyone is different. Focus on you and your journey, that's what I have to keep telling myself as well because it's easy to compare yourself to others. Best wishes to you!
  5. Hi, I'm about the same height and weight as you and also have my Gastric Bypass surgery scheduled for Wednesday. I'm also getting very anxious about it and have been going over and over the reasons why I have taken this decision. I don't know how old you are but I'll be 60 soon and have been losing and regaining the same 60/70 lbs most of my life and I just don't see how I can change that cycle without extra help. I am very active and play sport most days and I don't have any other co-morbidities. One of the main reasons I am having my surgery is to enable me to continue playing sport without doing any further damage to my body. Carrying this extra weight isn't pleasant nor is it good for me and it becomes more and more difficult as I get older. I suspect that I've already damaged my hips and knees playing tennis like this and I want to preserve what I've got left. I researched WLS years ago and 10 years ago I had a gastric band which I didn't get on with at all. I immediately had a de-fill and never had it filled again. It was removed last year. I wish I'd gone for the bypass or sleeve instead of the band to be honest because I feel I've missed out on so much because of this weight not to mention the strain it's put on my body. I don't know if this helps and only you can decide if it's the right thing for you at the moment. I wish you all the best with whatever you decide.
  6. After getting my band 7/28/10 I had a series of surgeries(appendectomy and gallbladder removal) within a 4 month period of time which totally derailed my motivation and stalled my progress and was wondering if anyone else has had this happen. I talked to 3 of my surgeons and they all said that there was no literature to connect them but they did say the gallbladder issue can happen with rapid weight loss, but I had only lost a very minimal amount of weight at the time and I couldn't find anything conclusive on the web. It was more than a coincidence and I know it. I had developed a superficial infection at my port incision (underwire of bra caught the scab) site 3 wks post-op which I'm sure started it all off. What's your experience? C

    No/low Sugar

I wondered the same thing! And if I'm only getting in a tiny tiny amount of food right now shouldn't I try for the 50 calorie Jello rather than the 5 or 10 calorie sugar free one? I just got popsicles tonight and I didn't get sugar free. I figure I'm not eating really anything anyway, it can't hurt. Maybe my mentality is wrong with this but the only "food" I got in today were the popsicles. I'm still on clear fluids and on day 5 post op.

    I paid to be tortured

That post was very funny and I'm sure intended to be hyperbolic, but I want to inject a note of seriousness here too. If anyone's personal trainer is anything less than understanding and responsive, get a new trainer. I started out with a trainer when I was 250 lbs and had been "working out" for a few months. I was in no kind of shape at all. My trainer was a body builder named Steve who intimidated the hell out of me as soon as I saw him. But within a few minutes it became clear that he knew what he was doing--this program was about ME and not about what other people could do or some benchmarks he insisted I hit. If he put me on the elliptical it wasn't to go for 10 minutes at a certain level no matter what, it was to go until my HR hit the right number and then to sustain it for X minutes. Lifting weights was about seeing what I could do and then continually trying for just a little more each time. That's the sort of consideration and care we all deserve, and if a PT isn't delivering we can walk out the door. No one should pay to get abused.
  9. I also had the compression boots after surgery for a day. Post-op I was on Lovenox for 7 days, every 12 hours. I was told to stop taking anything that thinned my blood for 10 days pre-op.

    UHC DENIED - Need support

I have UHC too and have been waiting...My plan is self funded with a trust from my work so they are like the providers....I had several very specific criterias...they told my dr office that there was NO coverage when I had given the doc's office a copy of the exclusionary policy...which I fit. At the time my only concern was if banding was an option since it said " stapling and bypass". As it turned out, I talked to someone at UHC in the "reconciliation" department ...sound Catholic to me lol .... She was very encouraging and got on a conference call with my doc's office. This was just for the initial consult!!!!! Anyway, then the luck and Lord was with me because I talked to my Benefits director,,,just to find out if banding had been covered or appealed....and was told as of 3/01/08 it would be included in the language!!!! Then, we were given the name of a claims person at UHC to send my file through so it wouldn't be held up due to the new language...that was as of 2 weeks ago...still waiting.... That's my muse!

    I want to live

I am 25 and I weigh 308 lbs. today. I started my journey at 324 lbs. I want to know if any one else is on the same road as I am. I have been obese for my entire life. I can't walk a flight of stairs without getting out of breath. Yesterday was the first time in about five years that I got out of the house and walked around the neighborhood. I was always a couch potato. I would eat all day long. Any time my mood changed good or bad I would eat. Anytime I watched T.V. I would eat. I just ate a bunch of junk food like, nachos, bags of chips, candy bars, chocolate chip cookies, buttered popcorn, etc. Even after eating all day I would always take something sweet upstairs to bed. I have even let my daughter follow the same paths as I have. She is five years old and she wants McDonald's everyday after school because her granny always takes her. She is not too big now (51 lbs.) but her doctors always check her blood pressure because she is in the top 10% of her age on the weight chart. When I decided to get my life together and stop killing myself I decided to turn her around on the right track also. She cries out in the stores and throws temper tantrums because her granny won't take her to McDonald's anymore and I threw out all of the sweets and fattening foods out of our house. She is coping better now. I bought sugar free Popsicles, fat free pudding a jell-o, and different healthy snacks that she can have. I also don't let her have these things until she eats her meals including vegetables. I have forced myself to stay on my four week EAS AdvantEdge pre-op diet. I will be banded on June 13th. Every time I see a restaurant or a commercial about food and start craving unhealthy foods, I just imagine myself fitting into my size 12 nightie. I would like someone to give me encouraging words or tell me about your experiences with you weight issues.

    Surgery on 7/3 for Slip

Hello Starrgirrl. I had to have my band removed open on 6-10-08, after only having it for three months. I too was filled with much grief but, I am moving on. I had lots of scar tissue so no rebanding for me. I like you don't want people to grieve for my journey. God Bless because we can do all things thru Christ who strengthens us.
  13. My friends have been really great about the surgery and have been very supportive. Most of my core group of friends go back 15 or more years (I'm 38), and I'm actually the only overweight person in the group. A bunch of my friends are seriously into working out, and it's been so great to get their encouragement and praise for how hard I've been working out and the results of that and my reduced calorie intake. I'm glad that they see that this isn't an easy way out and recognize the hard work I have put in to get this far along. One funny thing though is that one of my best friends recently told me that they thought I didn't need to lose any more weight (mind you. . to get out of the "overweight" BMI, I have to lose a minimum of 23 more pounds -- and I'm still in a size 14). To put it in context, this friend is about 135 lbs and wears a size 6 or 8. I thought that was surprising. She wasn't aggressive about it or anything -- I am sure she meant it as a complement. When I told her that my goal is BMI-based and that I want to get to a size 10 so that I can have more shopping choice, she relaxed about it! Catherine
  14. yup, i didnt pass gas for four days. i barely got down the protein shakes, and i barely finished a bottle of water. its important to just keep sipping water. slip all day like every 10 minutes.
  15. I notice if I drink more than three swallows of my protein shake I get a discomfort as it goes down. It a sensation that feels like gas build up and trying to get through is the best way to describe it. Has anyone else had this feeling and or is it normal and passes with continued healing. Thank you

i had my surgery 10/27... i still have pain with liquids. it's hard to get the full 64 oz that my plan requires too ... hope your doing better ! best wishes ! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  17. I do have little bubbles like you. Sometimes it feels like it stops right below my sternum for about 10-15 seconds and then it bubble bubble bubble goes down. It's usually because I've taken too big of a sip. The slower I go, the better it settles.

What is your goal weight based on?

i am shooting for 150. at that weight i should be sie 6 or 8 american. i was about 155 10 years ago and loved every minute of it. (it was just minutes, mind you)
  19. Totally depends on the person... I lost 10 lbs, but I had been doing WW for a few months prior so I didn't get that big first-week loss that some get the first week you're on a new diet.
  20. My surgeon says it's to shrink the liver to make it easier to get to the stomach. My personal opinion is that I think they have us do it so we are more prepaired for the post op diet. After this 3 weeks I'll be looking forward to the liquid yogurt and broth I will be allowed to have lol. Annebelle- How much milk have you been drinking everyday? I'm allowed to drink as much as I can in 5-10 mins 3 times a day. The last 2 days I drank 48oz.

    Running too Slow

Not sure anyone mentioned this, but spend time on a treadmill playing with different speeds at different intensities. It helped me get fast running times. Sprinting short bursts really helps. If you do not have a really good pair of running shoes, spend the 100 and fitting time to get a perfect pair - for you. My running shoes are Nike Pegasus and I actually have two pair. They feel really good when running 5 k or 10 k at competitive speeds. They feel equally good when busting out a sub 5 minute mile. Also a lot of people look like they are jogging when out there running. Running fast should not be that comfortable; you have to really push yourself, lengthen the strides, time your breathing, shooting yourself forward with very little lateral movement. Let gravity help you by leaning forward a little, stabilize your core region and use your hip rotators to generate the drive, relaxing everything else above and below your core region. Hope this helps.
  22. Go to my profile and look up previous posts I've made/contributed on this subject for specifics. Overall I don't have a lot of loose skin. Zero on my arms. A little bit on my inner thighs. A lot on my abdomen. It doesn't look bad when I'm standing up, but bending over, I look like I could welp a litter! I can grab handfuls of skin starting just under my breastbone down to my pubic area. All of my stretch marks are below my belly button and are from two pregnancies. A tummy tuck is the only thing that will fix that if i eventually go down that route. Genetics plays a HUGE role as well as how long you were over weight and how much you were over weight. I have a naturally athletic hour-glass figure that works in my favor, so I'm hoping with a little toning and exercise, I will see some improvement. There are some red flags. For example, if you have pockets of fat that start right above your elbows, you will likely have bat wings. Just remember that it takes your skin 2-3 months to bounce back every time you lose weight. There are times my thighs would look horrific and a fews months later they would look fine. I took the photo below 3 weeks ago when I weighed 153 or so. I'm 5'7", 43 years old and was 245 at my heaviest. 226 the day of surgery. My goal is to get to 145ish although now I'm not so much focused on a number as what my body looks like. I am an active person but just started "exercising" (walking 10,000 plus steps a day) this month 11 months post-op. I haven't lifted weights at all. I swallowed my pride and originally posted this picture a few weeks ago because I know pre-op I remember having a lot of questions about loose skin. Even now, most people are covering themselves up in their after photos and it leaves me wondering what is lurking underneath. So here is my loose skin. Be kind. The reality is losing the weight is the easy part. The cluster-f*** of body-image issues that arise post-surgery is real and is something we all should be aware of and expect as part of the journey. I am a middle-aged woman who has had two children. I will never have the body of a 19 year-old. I'm learning to love the skin I'm in. Even if it is a tad loose in places! I'm healthy and I look smoking HOT in clothes! I'm working on the looking smoking hot naked part! ????

    October Sleevies - Check in!

Hey,everyone! I am about 3 1/2 weeks out and feel great. I am back to work and have lots of energy. I was advanced to stage 4/ full diet at 2 weeks, and so far there isn't any protein I haven't been able to eat as long as I go slow and chew, chew, chew. I do 60 Gm protein, 60 0z fluid a day, but I do really have to work at it. Certainly no room for carbs or junk! I walk a minimum of 10,000 steps a day, and down 19 lbs post-op for a total of about 55 lbs lost. Only problem I had was quite a lot of post op pain, particularly in the rt lower abd, and it persisted a good 3 weeks. Surg actually tested me for appendicitis, but it was fine, and he thought he may have injured a nerve down there with the trocar. I think the fact that I have absolutely NO core strength hasn't helped. I need to work on that. Other issue is I have to really fight those vitamins and calcium tabs down. I feel like I might as well just munch down a couple of sticks or chalk every morning! Glad to hear everyone is doing so well! I really believe this is the best single thing I have ever done for myself. Rebecca

    January 2013 Sleevers

I'm 10 days post-op, but only 8 days out of the hospital (and therefore off of the IV fluids), and I have lost the 9 pounds I put on in the hospital plus 1 more pound. So, 10# in 8 days isn't bad, IMO, and it's my understanding that I'll start to see more drastic results now that the hospital weight is gone. I'm finally just about over the stupid cold I caught in the hospital and, otherwise, I feel great! Having no trouble getting in my fluids, Protein, and Vitamins. Transitioning to purees in a few days--very happy about that. Thanks for asking, AmandaRae. How are you feeling?

    One day post op HELP!

Congrats on your surgery, you have taken a big step towards better health. Burping is common with this surgery. My doctor had me drinking 10 ml every 15 minutes that I was awake the day after surgery. It sounds like you are heading towards dehydration and if you are still uncomfortable tomorrow you should call your surgeon for advice. I was in the hospital for 4 days and can't imagine being home any earlier, but I know a lot of people have very little time in the hospital following this surgery. Hang in there it gets better I promise!
