    Realistic

As I said once before in another thread, for three years I had the goal weight on my ticker at 155 which would put me in a "normal" BMI. I revised that recently to 163 which was my lowest adult weight. But that was 40 years ago after going from 201 down to 163 on Atkins. When I saw my PCP last week she said that I don't really have any excess fat except my abdomen which is very hard to get rid of. I also don't much loose skin - just a bit in my upper thighs, below my butt cheeks & my upper arms. I have lost so much in my butt that I rock on the bones & have to sit on an inflatable or foam cushion. I see the surgeon following me in a couple of weeks & will talk to him then. BMIs don't take age & bone structure into consideration. For now, my current weight of 175 is probably very good for me. I am thrilled that I am no longer obese & am now just "overweight." I am going to look into some type of body contouring procedure just to get rid of some of this abdominal fat.

What am I going to do without my band?

First of all, I am so sorry I don't have much else to add here except I doubt the Biggest Loser metabolic crash would happen to you because WLS isn't as severe as the BL diet/exercise regime. What they do to those poor people on the show is stress their bodies so much and to such extremes that the damage is irreparable. Makes the lap band look like a gentle treatment relative to that. I'm sorry you cannot get a revision. I would try to petition with your insurance company (if your first surgery was covered through insurance). Just try to do your best not to gain any more weight. Do you use a fitness/calorie tracker? Find out what your basal metabolic rate is and do your best to stick within the calories you need to stay as you are. That would be the strategy I'd take.
  3. That's not entirely true. You can stretch both pouch and sleeve. When I was in for surgery another patient was in for revision of the sleeve because it stretched quite a lot over the years and he could easily eat what people would consider a "normal portion" and more. And why should the bypass pouch be able to stretch out more than the sleeve? Doesn't make sense to me. Both pouch and sleeve have relatively small volumina left and both can stretch out again. The pouch is created from the stretchy part of the stomach (the fundus). The sleeve is created by removing almost all of the fundus.

Still mourning the loss of my band

I just had mine removed on Monday without warning as well. I also pleaded with him, Since he no longer places lap bands, I asked for a revision. He said there was too much swelling. I won't have another surgery. I am so worried about weight gain. Have you been able to keep off any weight gain in these last 5 months? Because if you have that gives me a lot of hope. i will do what I need to do even though I am still feel very sad I don't have my band.
  5. I had my band placed on September 02,2010 and lost 80 lbs with its help and running. Three years ago I couldn't swallow my own saliva and had a complete unfill(9cc) in the ER. I didn't go back to see my bariatric surgeon until May 13, 2016. I went because from January to May I gained 40 lbs. I was training for a marathon which I completed 40 lbs heavier than when I started my training. So, I decided to go for a fill. he gave me 1 cc and did nothing. I went back and he gave me 3 cc. I was fine actually was enjoying feeling a little bit of restriction. On Thursday had a very stressful day at work and I got tight. I couldn't eat or drink without throwing up. My surgeon has office visits on Tuesdays and Fridays so I went back on Tuesday and he took out 2 of the 4cc I had. Still could not keep anything down. Went back Friday and he removed the other 2. I went the the next week dealing with it and not eating or drinking because it was unfilled and probably swollen. Come to last Monday I couldn't take it anymore and went to ER dehydrated and with (I didn't know) low blood pressure. My surgeon goes and sees me in the ER and removes my band later that afternoon. He couldn't do a revision because of the swelling. I asked and begged for the sleeve, but he said he could not. I will not be able to have another surgery. I do not have the money to spend for it. I am so worried and scared and depressed. I was reading the article on the biggest loser metabolic issues and I don't know if that pertain to us. I feel it probably does. I will continue to run, but I feel I will need more especially because I am already 1/2 way back to my highest weight. Has anyone had success with keeping the weight off or even better losing weight with no revision after removal? Thank you all

Finally revised from band to sleeve!

Congrats on your revision. I am also a revision and although I have less restriction than I wish I had with the sleeve, I am glad to have the band gone. After all the complications and problems I had with it I feel so much better with it gone! I didn't realize how crappy I really felt until I didn't anymore. Best of luck with your sleeve!
  7. After 9 long months of jumping through hoops to get approved by insurance, I finally got through surgery! For my lap band I just went home after surgery. With my sleeve I stayed in the hospital for two nights. While having its share of annoyances, I thought staying in the hospital had several advantages such as always having someone there to take care of you and being able to catch any medical problems that might arise. When I had my lap band I wasn't able to pee for days and when I finally called my doc's office they instructed me that I should go to the ER to get a catheter put in. I had not idea how dangerous it was not to urinate after surgery. However, when this same thing happened to me in the hospital they caught it early and worked with my right away to take care of the problem. Some other general thoughts on both surgeries: While both surgeries left my abdomen very sore, the revision to sleeve left me with less internal pain from swallowing, burping etc. When I had my band I felt like I needed to burp for days and it was super uncomfortable. Also, with the band, I could tell when I needed to slow down drinking because I would immediately be in pain or feel like it was coming back up and I don't have that so far with the sleeve. I take a sip and let it go down and I don't really have any signal that lets me know my stomach is ready for the next sip. This may mean that I could drink faster than I am but I'm not willing to test that theory out at the moment. That's about it for now. So far I'm doing well and I'm looking forward to getting the weight back off!
  8. Had my revision April 27th. My band was done around 10 years ago. Lost around 80lbs but all of a sudden couldn't eat at all. Got terrible reflux , couldn't get it adjusted right . Had it replaced but it was never right. Threw up everyday day for the next ten years. Had to loosen it and started to slowly gain weight, eventually gaining it all back while continuing to throw up. After a couple of really bad days of throwing up and chocking to the point I couldn't breathe I went to the surgeon and he recommended bypass. I was terrified, I also read the horror stories. The night of the surgery I was able to start walking and next day drinking liquids. When I first started to eat, I was waiting to feel the food going down and the tightness from the band but it never happened. It's been around 6 weeks and I am truly grateful to my surgeon for recommending this. I can go out with my friends and family without the embarrassment and pain of the band . I eat slowly and small portions. You get very full from small amounts of food which is what you want. If you eat a little too much you feel "very full" and a little uncomfortable but I haven't experienced dumping or pain...I also haven't eaten anything with sugar, no Desserts or white breads or Pasta. Non of the torture of the band. I've lost almost 40 lbs and have around 30 or 40 to go but I have hope. Good luck with your journey! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

How do I tell my surgeon he screwed up?

I am looking at it from both sides. The first is from me the patient, you should ONLY put on your plate what you are going to eat. This should help with mindless eating as you are talking to friends/relatives. I eat a few bites talk for a while then eat a few more. Then you need to make sure that you are getting in the required protein and water everyday. To do this you need to make sure your meal doesn't last longer than 30 mins so you are getting your water in. After 30 mins you should be done eating and wait 30 mins than drink water. If you keep drinking you will feel fuller longer as your stomach as something in it. I was also told the beef was to harsh on my stomach to eat before 6 months. Maybe your dr told you something different. From the dr's stand point, he is going to ask you if you started out with the recommendations of portion size. I started out eating a tablespoon for the first few days, then went to 2 for about week, and moved on till at 3 months out I was at about 1/4 to 1/2 cup and now at a year out I can eat about 3/4 cup and normally I get full just on the protein still. Then he is also going to ask about fluids, are you getting them in? Are you waiting 30 mins before and after to drink?? As this can wash your food threw before you even benifit from eating it. It sounds like you are eating protein first so that is not a problem. Then comes the next question: Are you working out?? From the research I have done with trying to figure out which surgery I was getting, I found out that I needed to make the right decision the first time. I found that with the sleeve your majority of the work needs to be done in the first year, after that it is harder to lose weight and requires a lot more exercise to lose after the first year. Also, in researching I found out that revision surgery is 50/50 successful, you have to really work for it. I would talk with your doctor and your NUT and find a plan that works for you. Each of us are very different and our bodies act and react differently to everything. Talk to your nut about what you can do to be proactive in the first year. Congrats on your accomplishments so far and keep us informed as to what is going on with you!!! I will be praying that you find a path that will lead you to your Goal!!!!

Band or Sleeve? So confused :(

When I made my consultation with my surgeon, I was convinced that I wanted the band. However, after doing some research and really thinking about it, I decided against the band and went for the sleeve instead. Here's why: I don't feel comfortable having a foreign object in my body, it kind of freaks me out. I also don't want to have to get a saline injection through a port every time I need an adjustment, that means extra doctor's visits, more commuting to his office (which isn't terribly close to me to begin with, plus I don't drive). I'm also not a fan of the complications of the band (slipping, erosion, etc). Like you, I've also seen the revision from band to sleeve stories too, and that also played a factor in my decision process. The sleeve has it's complications too, but given my personal weight loss story and overall journey, I feel I would personally benefit more from the sleeve, you see, I'm always hungry lol. And with the part of the stomach that is being removed (where the hunger hormone is), my constant hunger (physical hunger, not the retched head hunger) shouldn't be a problem. Also, given my history with what I eat, my doctors office recommended the sleeve. Although they would of done the band had I chosen too. I've never had surgery and never been put to sleep for any procedure, and I am a bit scared but I feel good about my decision to sleeve and not band. I've thought about it for months and have done my research and feel like I understand the pro's and con's of both procedures. The sleeve just seemed like a better choice for ME. This is not to say that there's anything wrong with the band though! I think that you just really need to read up on both procedures some more, read success stories and some not so successful ones, read about the pro's and con's to both, and be realistic about how each one can personally benefit you and what you are comfortable with. At the end of the day, it'll be your choice, and I'm sure you'll make the best choice for YOU! Hope this helped

    Spasms and cramping

If you are getting 50 ounces in at 3 days post op you are doing well. You are going through a healing process so you can't expect to get in so quickly. After my sleeve 2 years ago it took me 3 to 4 weeks to get that much Fluid in. You'll get to the goal amounts don't rush yourself. I am having a revision to RNY in August so I'm dreading having to do it all again.
  13. This is very enlightening. Although I'm going to do it here, I wonder if our surgeons really do leave the stomach bigger. How much post op are you and have you lost since your revision? Sent from my SM-G900T using the BariatricPal App

I would give the reset and following the bariatric food plan a try before consulting about a possible revision. either way though, YOU CAN DO THIS! and we will be right here to encourage you along the way. stick around!
  15. wow, this has me worried. I am having a revision from sleeve to RNY in August. I was told I would lose a lot of weight so now I'm confused.
  16. Every one is different. Some lose their hair while others don't. There is no rhyme or reason really. I took Vitamins, Biotin, used special shampoos and at about 5 months post surgery I started having major hair loss. I just cut my hair short and it eventually all grew back and it looks great now. I'm having revision surgery in August so I fully expect to lose my hair again but I know it's only temporary.

Congrats on your initial success and for the birth of your girls! Before considering revision - try doing the pouch reset to see if you can get back to losing. Welcome back!

Hello all! I haven't been on this forum very much at all, which is probably to my detriment. I have regained half of what I lost. Now, one of the main reasons for this is I had twins almost two years ago. I was pushed to eat as much as I physically could in order to maintain a healthy pregnancy. It was worth it. I love my girls and they were born premature, I can't imagine them being any smaller than they were, but here I am, 210 pounds and frustrated and feeling hopeless. My surgeon that did my surgery is kind of useless. I don't know if I should be looking into revision or if I am even a candidate for that? Are there any veterans out here that can provide some guidance?

    The wait begins

Will do!. I agree waiting is the worst but it lets me go back to work and get my things in order before the revision
  22. BandtoSleevechick

    The wait begins

So i hate waiting. I had my band removal on may 23rd due to slippage. June 8th i had my follow up appt and we discussed options. First the doctor wants me to see the dietician so my weight doesn't go through the roof since my eating habits and portion sizes have changed some since the removal. Okay fine except that will be a month from now.. and then i make an appt with the doctor for revision. Waiting.. I hate it.. of course it makes me upset with myself that i didn't just opt for the sleeve to begin with. So now i have a choice .. do i go with my original doctor who did the band or the doctor who removed it.. They are in the same group and i feel comfortable with them both .. decisions decisions.
  23. Our starting weights are very similar and my surgeon recommended the DS for me as well just given my higher BMI. when i went in for my consult i was almost positive i was going to do the RNY but now I am see saw'ing between the two. If you are considering the DS my advice is to do a LOT of research on it. it has been proven to be the most successful with excess weight loss (80-90%) and least amount of regain, but it also has a lot more serious side effects than the Sleeve as it is malabsorbative too. Protein intake and a strict daily Vitamin regimen is necessary. Whats surprising to me is him recommending the switch in a two part phase, I've read a lot about people having the sleeve and getting it revised to the DS, but from what I've read, it hasnt been as successful as getting the Switch in the first place. Like any weight loss surgery, they're all just tools. How you use them will really determine your results. Best of luck on your decision
  24. Hello. I started this process about a month ago with the idea in my head of doing the gastric sleeve. Unfortunately, due to my chronic GERD and vomitting, ive developed Barretts esophagus and the sleeve is contraindicated. Im really unsure about getting the bypass. I have heard horror stories of hair loss, extreme malnutrition and Vitamin deficiency ( im anemic to begin with so this is very concerning to me). I know my band has to come out but im terrified if I dont do something else I will balloon up to my pre band weight or higher. Can anyone share their experience and tips on recovery if i decide to do it. Thanks so much
  25. It all depends on how much weight you have to lose. If you are in the higher weight ranges, the RNY might be better. The Sleeve is a bit easier but then it's easier to cheat which could cause you from losing all the weight you need to lose. I had the Sleeve 2 1/2 years ago and I love it. I still have restriction and it's just so easy. The bad thing is that I have horrible gastric reflux and meds are not helping. I am scheduled for a revision to a RNY bypass in August. They are both tools, they both work but the RNY is malabsorbtive, which could cause dumping and there is the issue of taking Vitamins the rest of my life. Ah well.... Good luck to you. it's not easier to cheat...if your mind is set on cheating you will cheat regardless of the surgery.
