Protein Shake and dumping syndrome!
mngreeneyes replied to mmy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You also may have developed lactose intolerance. I had similar symptoms right after surgery when I ate or drank anything with dairy in it. It was cured really quickly by switching to a lactose free milk. I like Fairlife. I am not 5.5 months out from surgery and I can tolerate dairy again, but only in small amounts. I still drink my fairlife milk with my Protein powder, but I can now tolerate regular yogurt, cheese, and pudding made with regular milk. I hope you figure it out. pam -
What snacks or food to eat on the go
Sophie74656 replied to Bizziebe27's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you can have a cooler with you, I like those yogurt smoothies. they have ones for kids that are in a little bottle so I can actually finish one Other than that, you may have to wait a few more weeks, but beef/turkey jerky is good. It's also a source of Protein. as for soda cravings, I find that crystal light or other powders help with the craving for sweets. Carbonated drinks still don't sit well with me so I try to avoid soda. -
What snacks or food to eat on the go
reree6898 replied to Bizziebe27's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I too have to have two snacks during the day or I stall out because I eat so little at meal times. I have things like the light baby bell cheese, or Greek yogurt. A lot of people do the turkey sticks or jerky. If your driving all day i would recommend getting a small cooler bag to keep with you each day and pack it the night before. Also the tin packs of tuna and salmon are good as well. The vitamin water zeros are very good and help when you want something more then the plain water. -
I've had shrimp, squash/zucchini (in a grill pack..by far the best thing so far), Northern Beans, baked beans, refried beans, avocado, green beans, a little scrambles egg, lasagna but no noodles I just had sauce for the most part, Greek yogurt, and some thinly shaved turkey and ham from a deli. One week post op and I feel really good. Barely any incisional pain left. I feel like I can bigger drinks of water, well more than a sip. I've just been eating soup, yogurt and protein drinks or shakes. My daughters birthday is the weekend and we are having a party tomorrow. I had to go into Subway (smelled like heaven) and GiGi's cupcake to order food and cupcakes for her party. She has to have surgery to remove her Thyroid on Thursday so it will be really hard to to stress eat with a 4 oz pouch. I need to take food with me to the hospital because she'll be in a few days. Hope everyone has a good weekend! HW 229.8 (pre-op) CW 211.4 -
I can't eat hardly anything that I used to. The strangest thing. I had read your tastes can change around 6 months but that it only lasts a while. I just passed my 1 year mark and have lost 92 lbs. regular food all tastes the same. I eat pina colada yogurt, Protein bars, premier Protein drinks and a boat load of candy lol. I have never cared about candy and sweets. and I'm still losing weight! My diabetes is gone and my A1C is in the 5s from 12. It's crazy. Has anyone else experienced not being able to eat regular food?

Can't find a great tasting whey protein powder

I am 4 weeks and I get hungry every now and then...although everyone says its head hunger...I just stick to the 4 oz of yogurt/baby food/mush per meal until 7-9weeks when I can start solids and apparently after a month or so you should feel "real" hunger. Seattle WA

9days post op and I feel hungry sometimes. I heard that it's not hunger that I'm feeling, so I ignore it. I'm not really eating much...mostly yogurt. Had salmon yesterday. But I can't tell when I'm full so I just eat very little. You don't want to eat until you are "full." Your stomach is still healing and can't give you reliable signals about satiety at this point. You want to measure out small portions and eat them -- or less than the small portion if you start to feel uncomfortable while eating. What happens if I actually do get full? Does that mean I've stretched my stomach? Lots of people will feel extremely sick, nauseated, dizzy, or even throw up if they are "full." The old full feeling that you are used to is gone and don't expect it to come back. Instead, stick with your measured small portions. You will start to feel pressure or tightness if you eat too much. You may also find that you get a runny nose, or hiccups, or something weird like that if you eat too much. This is because the food you crammed into your tiny stomach is irritating the vagus nerve, which runs across the top of your stomach. It controls things like sneezing and hiccups. So remember, if you get symptoms like that, you ate too much and need to eat less next time. Over eating one time will not stretch your sleeve. Making a habit of it likely will, although it will not stretch out to the size of your former stomach. I was so tired of only drinking water so I got a small mango/pineapple smoothie from McDonalds today I had less than 1/4. Is that super bad??? Will calories from 1/4 of a smoothie derail your weight loss? No. But making a practice of choosing to eat junk food loaded with carbs and sugar (almost 50 grams of each in a serving, I looked it up!) will definitely derail your weight loss. You didn't get this surgery to make lazy choices of horrible food. Get some premier protein shakes or similar to keep on hand. Diet fruit juice is good. So is G2 or Powerade Zero. Vitamin Water Zero is another choice. Your only options aren't water and sugary fast food smoothies. I know this sounds harsh but I really am saying all of this because I want you to succeed! I know it is hard early on but this is the time to learn to make good choices with respect to food and your eating habits. Good luck!

I've seen the term "slider food" several times around the forum, but I don't know what it means. It makes me think of mini burgers! What is it? Slider foods are foods that you can eat without the restriction of your sleeve kicking in. Usually they are foods that dissolve easily in Water or foods with a high liquid content. Think of things like cheetos or cheez-its or cake. They "collapse" when wet, so they take up far less volume in your stomach than they do when they are dry. For me I can eat an almost infinite amount of potato chips or popcorn now at 20 months out. But I can still only eat 3-4 oz. of dense Protein, like chicken. As for foods with high liquid content, some examples would be Soup, chili, yogurt, anything in a heavy sauce.... all of those foods move through your sleeve more quickly because the liquid makes it easier (the same reason we're not supposed to eat and drink at the same time).

I need to do this, no matter what
Micoxv replied to Micoxv's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Last night was great. Good friends, great atmosphere , I had a great time. While they started with be, I had a grape juice. I took some tapas (hummus, shrimps and salmon), stayed away from bread. Then some squid And a yogurt with mango sorbet in dessert. Yummy! It is kind of funny how you see people from a differently. I never noticed how much they ate or how they were changing after a few beers and a bottle of wine shared. Nevertheless it made me believe I can have a social life with the Sleeve and I don't have to wait for a year post-op. 7 weeks post op plateau HELP!
2goldengirl replied to Porkchop911's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I hate to say anything bad about someone's surgeon's advice, but this is just not enough food for someone 7 weeks out. I am 8 weeks today, and my surgeon doesn't dictate amounts, she knows each sleeve recovers differently and everyone's capacity will vary. She does say to get in a minimum of 64 gm of protein and 600-800 calories a day at this point. That's twice what you're getting. I have two Snacks a day in addition to my meals - usually yogurt and a cheese stick during the week. I change it up on the weekends. Just the yogurt and cheese add 20 gm or protein to my day. I would urge you to consider adding a couple snacks to start with, and maybe a half a Protein Drink after dinner. -

Maybe dumping after celery. Vegetables?
nearperfectmess replied to NewAngela's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@NewAngela - We're pretty close in terms of surgery dates (3/16 here) and I've found I can only have celery chopped up very small, as suggested above. Costco sells these amazing chicken salad cups made with greek yogurt instead of mayo that are 14g of protein for a 1/2 cup serving and have a small amount of celery. It's nice to have that little bit of crunch and I haven't had any dumping because of it. If making it smaller doesn't help, I'd hold off for a little bit. 2 months out is still pretty close to be having a lot of fibrous foods. I was told to wait at least 3-4 months before trying to add them in any significant amount. -
you can also make a version of a greek sauce (taziki?) with cottage cheese grate some cucumber so it's mush and mix with cottage cheese, dill, lemon juice, garlic, and salt to taste. You can mix in some plain greek yogurt for some Protein sorry for not giving the amounts I never write them down. You can pretty much do as much or as little as you want of the ingredients

One year ago today I began intentionally working to improve my health. Today I am 80 pounds lighter, I am off on my medication, and I feel really good. I've had to buy all new clothes, and I'm exercising more than I have in years and I'm actually enjoying it. All is well right? Well I'm still on my CPAP machine. And I am in another 20 pounds or so from my goal weight. I'm five months from my actual surgery day and since then I've lost 40 pounds. But in the last month, I've lost zero. (I have not gained any weight in that time but just stayed right around the same). My Water and Protein is within my clinics recommendations. I'm exercising quite a lot. The thing that I'm struggling with is grazing when I'm at home especially in the evenings I tend to nibble on while I am cooking dinner for my family. The things I eat are nuts, apples, oranges, Jerky, toast here in there, cheese, yogurt, etc. my clinic hasn't told me to be completely carb free. Instead they have told me to focus on eating protein first. This is what I do for the most part. At my last check up a month ago my care providers all seemed very happy with my progress. But I'm feeling discouraged mostly fear that I am wasting this valuable window surgery has created. Am I being ridiculous? Because truthfully I haven't felt this good as I do right now in 15 years plus. At the same time I know I haven't been 100% perfect all the time on the diet rules and so I'm terrified that I'm sabotaging myself. Help me get out of this all or nothing black-and-white thinking. Much love thanks for your help.

1 week Post-op in able to get anything in
LibrarianBecky replied to mmy's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had my surgery on April 26, so I'm a newbie too, but I thought I'd give you my take. For me, cream of chicken soup would not have worked right out of the gate. I tried some homemade cream of mushroom around 6 days post-op, and it did not sit well with my stomach. For me, the things that have gone down easiest have been sugar free pudding, light Greek yogurt, and Protein shakes. If you still feel yuck today, maybe start with just liquids. As important as protein is, not getting dehydrated trumps it. Good luck! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
So I had my mini gastric bypass surgery on April 30th. Due to some complications I had to stay the the 3 nights following in ICU and the 4th night at the hospital's normal room and was discharged yesterday. For 4 days I had absolutely no oral intake what so ever. Yesterday and the day before I was already starting to feel really much better and had no symptoms at all (which now I think was due to the heavy medications) in fact I was feeling really hungry in the last two days. The dietician pass by me early yesterday and said I can start on Clear liquids (Water, apple juice, Jello and clear broth) and should stick to that for 3 days. Following that I should move into heavy liquids (Soups, milk juices and yogurt). My surgeon however later said I can skip that and can start with heavy liquids as long as I can tolerate it. Happy was I went straight ahead and had cream of chicken Soup right after discharge. I wasn't really sure when was I full so after having half the bowl decided to stop. Had some apple juice 2 hours later. Had my Vitamins and went to bed. Woke up with some abdominal discomfort and really heavy and bloating. massive diarrhea. Today I am still feeling bloated and unable to take anything in orally. Diarrhea still there and I feel abdominal discomfort and really extremely lethargic. So what should I do to ease this and regain some energy back? Should I just force my self to some liquids? Also my hair started to fall off really bad. Bought some hair vitamins along with the special Bariatric vitamins but even the smell of vitamins gets me nauseous.. Any help with that?? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

What's your comfort food?
foodfighter78 replied to foodfighter78's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat a Japanese potato is very different then a potato that was my dinner. I'm 14 mo out and I still can't eat much. Pizza, pasta, rice bread makes me so full I feel like I explode if I eat it, so I don't. Meat, chicken, fish comes up after 5 min, sweets give me severe dumping. So I'm left with nuts, beans, zucchini, salad, avocado, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese. What a heck???? Sorry I'm venting
