    Bummed At People's Reactions

You know, if she is a good friend then after the surgery you should take her up on her offer... It's always good to try new things and meat is murder, lol (coming from an on&off vegetarian)!!! Let her know that you will be changing your habits for the better, but you still need this extra help of the sleeve because reasons a ) b ) & c ) Healthy friends are a great thing! And I promise if you show her YouTube videos, doctors reports, this site etc she will be more informed. She wouldn't be a good friend if she approved of high risk abdominal surgery on a whim, educate her and she'll educate others! She may become a champion of WLS! You never know- Don't get fatigued by these attitudes, use them to reinforce your own decision! On the other hand, if someone remains stubborn give up the goose and find another friend
  2. I am having my surgery at the Northwest Weight Loss Surgery in Everett, WA. I am very excited and just a little nervous! I haven't really talked to the doctor about what pain meds I will be on. I guess I will ask when I have my pre-op appointment. I am a bit worried that the pain meds will make me nauseas without being able to eat solid foods. What was your experience with that? I did find a really good yogurt smoothie at costco! It is made by the same company that makes the Protein shakes. I will definitely stock up on vegetable broth (I'm also a vegetarian .
  3. Has anyone here done this and been successful at it? If so, can we hear your story? I'm fascinated. Alan

    2020 Major Holidays During Pandemic

No thanksgiving here but it will be a quiet/low key Christmas this year. Just my sister, her family and myself. Our mother passed away recently and other family will not be travelling here this year due to travel restrictions. Since our gourmet cook sister won't be here this year, we will be buying an already cooked bbq chicken and just roasting some veges, and for the two vegetarians making a nut roast. Usually there are lots of pre-Christmas dinners and drinks with friends and family as well as a work Christmas party. All this will be low key this year too. Very much a good thing as I am still not doing well with meals out and about (I need to remember small bites, lots of chews and wait awhile between bites).

32 of the Yummiest Grams of Protein in One Sitting!

I'm a little worried here... I am a vegetarian, and everything I can eat has some carbs. Some Dairy and eggs are not too bad, but I can't live on those. I get surgerized in a week, and keeping my fingers crossed! I did lose some weight on vegetarian South Beach, and the low glycemic index choices did lower my hunger substantially... so I'm hoping that low/medium glycemic index carbs will be ok for losing weight.... Right now at 1600 calories, my carbs are over 170 a day. I'm sure it will be less when I eat much less....
  6. It is going to be really hard for me to keep my carbs so low...Im a vegetarian, and everything I eat has carbs in them. I can keep my calories down though... I expect a stall....
  7. Hello every one I'm 5 months post op, I've lost 35 pounds, the last few months no weight loss and I always feel hungry. I'm a vegetarian so I know it's harder to get the Protein. I'm always switching from shakes to cheese or greek & yogurt. You know what I mean. I talked to my good friend who went through a gastric and she advised me that there are times like this where you just don't lose weight. I can not eat a lot when I do eat but every few hours I eat a snack or food. Sometimes I feel like I eat too much. I'm still learning how to eat right and how much. I'm not giving up just always looking for new ways to eat and what I can eat. Oh forgot to mention I had to have my gall bladder removed about 6 weeks ago. Anyways my friend said it took her a year and a half to lose all her weight so I figure we're all on the right track it just takes time and EXERCISE!!!! Which I do 2 to 3 times a week. I did this to lose 50 pounds it doesn't matter how much you are over weight because you know it and you feel it. That's why I went to Tijuana to have my sleeve because I couldn't have it done in the US. SO I have 15 more pounds to go.
  8. I am a vegetarian and have not had any problems with veggie's but I have stayed away from asparagus and celery since being banded in June. Also I have no problem with rice or pasta's I just have to make sure I take very small bites and chew chew chew.
  9. And that is why I am a vegetarian, you would be so surprised of all the junk, some I'm sure we aren't even aware of, that are fed to animals.:rolleyes2:
  10. Watching a documentary and considering it. What do you eat or cook? sleeved November 8th. 27yrs. HW 273 SW 233 CW 215. IG @macon_me
  11. I'm a vegetarian! You can find a Facebook support group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1646059515642538/
  12. Mashed beans, lentils and tofu are all soft foods. Basically, if you can cut it easily with a fork, it is considered a soft food. In fact, other than raw veggies, I can't think of anything vegetarian that wouldn't be considered a soft food. I was actually eating tofu, hummus and refried beans in my pureed stage. However, I'd stay away from the mashed potatoes unless you are adding unflavored protein powder to them. Otherwise they are just empty carbs. and feel free to continue drinking protein shakes if you need to in order to get your 60-80g of protein in. I drank them regularly for several years.
  13. I am pre-sleeve, so feel free to ignore me. I am a type I diabetic, so I have been dealing with nutrtiion my whole life. Have you tried cutting grains out all together? (no wraps or chips for a while, keep your carbs limited to fruit/dairy.) Also try lean meats, fish, and low-fat cheeses. Also, if you can tolerate them, a lot of vegetarian options are low-fat and good sources of protein. And as always, track your intake, weigh and measure your food, and keep fighting the good fight! Best of luck!!!
  14. I get hungry sometimes too... have from the start. Carbs seem to play a roll.. I do eat more carbs than some here, I am a vegetarian, and many Protein sources come with some carbs too. Some studies show that thirst can masquerade as hunger. Ghrelin is also made in other parts of the body. Its production is reduced when the fundus is removed... but not eliminated completely. http://lowcarb4u.blogspot.com/2010/01/ghrelin-hunger-hormone.html ....Another hormone that plays a role in energy homeostasis is ghrelin, a 28-amino acid peptide discovered in 1999. Its name includes the Proto-Indo-European root word "ghre," meaning "to grow." Ghrelin is produced in the hypothalamus, kidney and pituitary gland, but most of it is synthesized in and released by the stomach. ..
  15. I'm wondering if there are any succesful vegans or vegetarians. If so how does your diet look and do you have issues getting in your protien? I just watched food choices on Netflixand it was eye opening.

    Long Term Effects of Vomiting?

Thank you so much for your response! I'm already completely unfilled and have been since June of 2009. I know its a ton of upchucking which is why I wanted to ask, It doesn't appear to be very medical, I literally take to big of bites eat to hard of foods as well as a lot of raw foods) and don't chew enough. I am never in any pain, I feel no pain after and I only eject the food because I hate that "pressure" in my chest, drool starts to well up and I can barely talk because ive got food caught in my band and the spit has no where to go, its a bit aggravating, my mood even changes if im "blocked up" im a vegetarian and a all natural eater so the food I eat is a bit "rough" on my band I think. Its just that its been bothering me. i eat so much whole grains and brown rice it LOVES gettin caught in the band and it began to worry me. I do have the terrible habbit of not chewing enough or i tend to drink something right after and it gets caught. i do have a stomach doctor * its the guy that removed all my CCs when preggos* he even had a barium xray done on me Jan of 09 and sent it to a specialist in France. The specialist and him were happy about how the band was looking. I am/was to embarrassed to ask him in depth about the upchucking as I am pretty sure its just me eating to quick. He also didnt ask or go to far in depth with how much/how often I eject I mean it could be worth asking my doctor about but I literally wanted to know if there is any true side effects. I know what the docs gonna say... Slow down! hehe:wub: Ps- i also apologies as I don't think this is in the right forum. :/

    No Energy!

Well, I was home because I primarily work from home - but I was out and about a lot both days. And my period isn't due for 8 days - forgot to add that. No, I've been off the protein shakes for a month now - which is funny considering that they were my breakfast of choice for about 7 years prior to surgery. I'm not much of a breakfast person, so now I usually have non fat Greek yoghurt or non fat cottage cheese with a scoop of unflavoured protein in it. You should definitely be impressed with my protein intake! I'm a vegetarian, and let me tell you, it's not easy being green when it comes to getting the nutrition after surgery! I use this unflavoured protein powder at least once a day - if not with breakfast, then mixed into a veggie chili or veggie curry at dinner.

    No Energy!

I am so sorry you're feeling this. I did as well. I'm not a vegetarian or vegan and ate meats. But on testing, they did find that I had deficiencies in some of my B vitamins. You might see if you can get your vitamins tested and do a chemistry panel? Also, I'm told that Genepro isn't the best protein source out there...that their actual protein counts are suspect and it may not be the right types of amino acids/proteins? Just food for thought!
  20. Just because nobody else has mentioned it,I thought I would mention that as a vegetarian I don't eat any meat and also I can't manage quorn (for the uninitiated it has a very similar texture to chicken). I can manage soya mince, though. I also found, post banding, that I can't manage chunks of cheese, even well chewed, nor boiled or scrambled eggs so I just gave up and became vegan - which is a lot easier.

    Here we goooO!

I started my pre-op diet today after two days of last-mealitis and binging. I tried to fit in all of my favorite foods just in case I never get to eat them again. Let's see... I went to two fast food places, Taco Cabana and Jack in the Box. I don't know why I chose Jack in the Box. I never eat there! But I loaded up on tacos, chicken sandwiches, flauta, fajita taco, cake, eggrolls and more. Then last night, I hit the bakery at Market Street for a lemon torte and a fruit tart. I bought an eclair and a napolean but never got around to eating them. I also bought a shitload of diet food, fearing that I would be deprived if I didn't have everything I could possibly want at my fingertips. Today I am have a protein shake for breakfast. The new diet is low-fat, low-carb, and vegetarian. So basically, I can eat protein supplements, veggies, and fruit with an occassional cracker. YUUUUUUMMMMY! [she says with intense sarcasm] I think my biggest problem right now is the overwhelming fear that this, like many other things I have tried to lose weight, will not work. My brain is scrambling with the question, "What if I change my body and put myself through all of this and remain fat?" It happens. And it would be just my luck that it would happen to me. That is very negative thinking but I am afraid, nonetheless. I am also cranky and stressed out about losing my food "friends". I know that in a couple of months, I can still enjoy them, just in smaller portions but I am not sure I trust myself to have a bite or two of something I love (like a bagel) or that my body won't reject something that I love (like a bagel). Speaking of Bagels, I went to Einstein Brothers Bagels twice this week and loaded up on lox, asiago bagels, pumpkin bagel and bagel dogs. Now, back to the protein shake. I am using Herbalife Formula 1 shakes. They are really good and as much as I hate to admit it, really satisfy my hunger. They are not too sweet and you can use the powder in other recipes. I get mine from Ajay's Fitness (home of the 4-minute workout...no kidding. It's amazing). Nutrition products are available for shipping anywhere. I am also logging my food intake at Myfitnesspal.com. It's free and has a good library of foods to add to your food journal.
  22. Hi everyone. My op was nearly 4 weeks ago, and I've had no problems whatsoever. I've noticed that the rate of weight loss has started to stall a bit, but have been told this is normal. I'm comfortably eating softs and have just started on some more substantial vegetarian Proteins and solids. My question however, is in regards to the restriction on no liquids before, during, or after meals. Now, I'll start by saying I don't drink alcohol at all. I've also no had a single carbonated drink since my pre-op diet, and to be honest I'm not missing them. My Fluid of choice is usually an ice cold, slightly weak diet-cordial. I have noticed however, just how much I enjoyed having a cordial with my meals. Before my op, I'd neck a glass before sitting at the table and then consume another glass whilst eating. Obviously, I'm not doing either now, but I find post op that I'm getting quite a dry mouth and would love nothing more than 1/2 sips of fluid before attempting to eat. I'm aware that the risks of drinking is that it encourages the stomach to stretch - but is this still an issue with all fluids (aka. 1/2 sips of cordial/water)? Or does it apply to excess drinking/eating/drinking/eating with the aim of getting more in? Thanks for your time and replies
  23. I'm a vegetarian. Sleeved 9 weeks ago. doing great! no issues getting protein in. Lots of beans, tofu, soy products, whey protein, Greek yogurt, tempeh, low-fat cheese, etc.

    Gastric Sleeve for Vegetarians

Heres a start... you can search here for more veg threads too...I did the last 2 years vegetarian. Totally possible. The first 3 months I was lactos intolerant, but that went away. http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/69925-vegetarians-unite/

    Veggies - most nutrient packed

Ta. We're hoping for a vegetarian/vegan spot where people could come and get info on healthy options. Its not that meat is bad or wrong or anything, but I would love to see promoted healthy veggies and fruit so that people can get as much healthy nutrition as possible. Lets face it: in America we get fries and fries and fries thrown at us. chips. Its time to pass on benefits of all types of options that aren't just that. Nuts and avocados are healthy fats and we need those. Nuts are high in Protein. I know my sister is working with her health coach on her problems and she talks about the salmon 3 times a week. She's more than tired of that and I want to see her with other options and different tastes so she doesn't get bored with it. I want the same for people here. There are those who have problems with different types of meat or the like and its more fun to have various options rather than a Protein Drink all the time.
