5 weeks post op (Sadi S)
ShoppGirl replied to Milagros Roman's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyoneβs post op plan is different. At five weeks I was on soft foods post SADI revision but itβs important to follow the plan your surgeon set for you. It goes by pretty fast. You will be able to eat again soon. For soups, if you get a good soup and strain it (like from a restaurant) that can be a little treat because the broth is more flavorful even if you canβt have the noodles. If you are on soft but just canβt have the noodles, try having just the broth with the veggies (celery can cause some people issues, though so be mindful of that). Honestly the longer you can go without having processed carbs the better. Carbs make you crave more carbs (or thatβs how it works for many people anyways). -
Just approved for Surgery in October 2024

Honestly, in pounds, you weigh 272, and you need to lose 27. That's absolutely doable. I agree that 12 weeks is a LOOOONG liquid diet. Are you able to have even 1 meal per day at any point? I understand they want you to lose 27 pounds before your surgery, but 3 months on only liquids seems really, really harsh. Either way. congratulations on getting your surgery day!!! You'll love your life after, I can tell you that. -
What do you wish you had done BEFORE your gastric bypass surgery to get ready?
lily06 replied to DianeF's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I did 2 things preop that helped immensely: 1) this may sound weird but i guessed iβd be in a little pain from the incisions so a couple of days before going into the clinic i move everything i figured iβd need in the first week post up to middle shelves in my kitchen/fridge : cups, scales, protein shakes and powders etc. And thank god i did because i had abdominal muscle pain (like iβd done 10000 crunches) and was told not to bend down for a while. 2) i wrote out Β« meal Β» plans from what my dietician provided in order to clearly see what time of day iβd eat (protein shakes) and drink (water). Iβm the kind of person who needs a set plan thatβs clear and that i can follow because i was lost the first few days. I wrote out 4 weeks of meal plans and i varied the shakes and purΓ©es and soups so i didnβt get sick of one specific one (never ate the same one 2 meals in a row and alternated with the next day). Not sure it actually helped my experience but it did help me see clearly mentally π€£ -

I bet what you get in the hospital was same as I got which was heparin for blood clots. The two day nurses I had both said they were supposed to do them in the belly but didnβt want to torture me with my already sore belly so they did them in the thigh.i still baxe bruises so I can only imagine they were painful in the belly. At the time I was in pain so that sounded good. In retrospect I shouldβve said I will deal if thatβs where they are supposed to be Iβm guessing itβs for a reason. Fortunately it worked out okay. The NP at the surgeon who ordered the B-12 just said itβs not uncommon to need it post SADI but because if the gall bladder removal it would be way more likely. (I actually know a couple of people Who had bypass who are in if so it didnβt shock me). She wants me to do them in the thigh. She said itβs a little short needle but I was taking it with me to my family NP tomorrow morning to let her help me the first time. They gave me an instructions sheet for the injection but I have no clue how to use that sharps container anyways to get the needle off. The surgeon said to schedule a follow up with them and I may as well actually do something while Iβm there. I am not on any meds that she can decrease which is why I assume they tel everyone to schedule it between a week and two weeks out. I will let you know how it goes. -

Hi and welcome to the forum! I got mines on Thurs 13th and currently in first week recovery. I canβt lie I have really struggled so far with the pains and aches since the surgery. The liquid diet isnt great for me so I am looking forward to chewing something. Anyway good luck and I hope you find something that works with your new stomach -
I had a gastric bypass about 6 years old. Fast forward to today. I was recently hospitalized with severe anemia (hemoglobin 5.2). I had to have emergency blood transfusions. I'm still receiving weekly IV-iron infusions (8 weeks). I am also deficient in several nutrients despite taking my bariatric vitamins. My bariatric surgeon figured out the reason for the anemia. Two ulcers detected by an EGD (upper scope). I was slowly bleeding out. At one point, my family thought I was falling asleep... when I was really passing out. Anemia hurts. Your whole body aches. Recovery is slow... the fatigue is unreal but I'll get there.

hi Christine. I find the reverse is just as true too. Where the most commonly experienced effects of surgery just arenβt shared with patients by their team. How many post do we see from people upset, depressed & frustrated about stalls, hair loss, foamies, etc. Though I know there could be things missed simply because there is so, so much information weβre given & have to absorb. I do advocate sticking to the plan given to you by your team but we know there is no one size fits all (in life, clothing or plans). If something isnβt working for you, ask for alternatives, other options or suggestions as to what you can do or eat or drink, etc. Take suggestions & experiences people offer here & ask your team if you could try them. Theyβre supposed to know you & are best placed to advise what will support you without compromising your recovery or progress. Hope your upcoming surgery is successful & everything is put back to where itβs supposed to be. PS - Fellow teacher here too - well was one of my careers. What year levels or subjects did you teach? Congrats on your retirement.

Can you eat a cup and a half post sleeve
FifiLux replied to ShoppGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not really a cup based measuring person as that is a US basis and while I am not "ways out" I can at times, depends on the day and also what I am eating, eat more than a cup and a half (I think if I understand the measurement conversions). Last week I had approx 1/3 of a pizza when out for dinner. I then had the same portion (leftovers) for lunch and dinner the next day. I would think that they would be more than a cup and a half. At home I will have usually 150g yoghurt for breakfast and my dinner is usually 160ml chicken or mince dish (as I portion them all out and freeze) but I will add things to these - like a bit of fruit and/or chai seeds to the yoghurt and have a post dinner desert of some dark chocolate or nuts. Lunch depends on if homeworking or office based, or even if weekend but if at home it is usually one of my homemade meals again about 160ml or a salad at work of about 250g. One day for lunch last week I had a Californian chicken roll in my local sushi place, it was cut into 8 pieces so likely more than a cup measurement and I was able to just about eat it all. I was a cheap date for my boss, only cost β¬6.50 vs his β¬25 meal & drink π -

Iβm 18 days post-op and on purΓ©es and I am struggling with protein intake. Protein shakes are so hard to get down, the milkyness of them turns me off and I feel nauseous. Iβve tried premade and protein powder. Iβve not once met my daily protein goal because of it. π© Hopefully next week with soft foods and then regular foods the week after will help with that. Other than that Iβm doing okay, which is good. -
The first day of the rest of my life hurts
JennyBeez replied to Bexinmo78's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I second the warm / hot drinks. Herbal tea and broth were amazingly helpful, especially in the first week or two. My team also gave me the go-ahead for sugar free electrolyte drinks if I found the water wasn't doing it for me. I had to water down the electrolyte drinks to get past the taste anyway, lol. The first couple of days were rough, but after that I found the water started to satiate my thirst much better. It might just be that right after recovery, our bodies are so strung out they need time to readjust to everything -- including water. I was on chewable multis and liquid calcium/d3 from day 3 -- the first two days, they told me not to bother with either. I had bought a big bottle of the liquid calcium & d3 thinking it would be the easiest during recovery, and because it was available at my local drugstore. It was awful, it burned going down and for a good half hour afterwards. I was determined to use it all to 'not waste' but but I think by day 4 or 5 I was ordering chewable calcium / d3 because I couldn't take it anymore. Still took over a week to get the calcium/d3 chewables. Don't be afraid to reach out to your team about changing things up if they're not working for you. -
How are you feeling now? It's been a while since you posted and I'm hoping you're doing better. You should be...what...about 5 weeks post op now. Have things improved?

I have trouble getting in enough veg or fruits right now. I was trying to force myself to get some lettuce (romaine or iceberg) and use them as lettuce wraps once or twice a week, but I don't eat enough of the head to make it worth it before it goes bad. My nutritionist has been telling me that 'fresh is best' -- but also that the best veg to eat is whatever veg you do eat. (in other words -- it doesn't matter how good something might be for you if you don't end up eating it, lol). I have a small can of low sodium V8 twice a week, and try to throw some frozen veg in with my protein -- spinach, broccoli florets, green beans. Bell peppers. I used to heavily dislike bell peppers, but after my surgery I love them -- steamed or on the barbecue.

Hello everyone. Hope you are all doing well. My journey is still a bit confusing. So overall, Iβm doing great. Down 65 pounds since my surgery on Oct 9th. Thing is, I was down 55 pounds after the first six weeks. And only lost 10 pounds this past six weeks. Keep hitting frequent stalls every couple weeks. Trying to keep getting my protein in. Biggest thing that puzzles me is the amount I can eat. Unless I strictly measure my portions, Iβm able to eat a lot more than I feel I should be able to. For example, I can eat 10 grilled chicken nuggets in about 15 minutes. Also can drink about 10 ounces of water at a time. I had RNY surgery btw. My surgeon looked puzzled when I told him this, but then just blew it off. He told me I should be eating 4-5 bites per meal. Yeah right. More like 15-20 bites unless I strictly measure it out. But letβs face it, thatβs not always possible when I work 50+ hours a week. Oh and my hair is starting to fall out. Apparently itβs normal for RNY patients around 3 months. They have assured me it will grow back later. Sure hope so. But otherwise I feel great, moving much better and no more plantar fasciitis or knee pain. How is everyone else doing? -

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeksββsurgery is in two daysββand I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?Β

Well, it's countdown time for me. I start my liver prep diet tomorrow and my surgery is two weeks later. I have all I need for the next two weeks, it came in a tote bag from my surgeon's office, chocolate and vanilla protein powder. I can add some fruit to the shakes if desired and have other clear calorie free liquids and jello and popsicles. I hope it won't be too bad. I'll let you know how it's going! It's getting real y'all. -
How Can I tell Iβm Hungry?
ChunkCat replied to SpringCleansing's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For the first month, hydration is king. Calories are nice. Protein is good. But dehydration is the number one reason for ending up in the hospital post-op. Your family should be told about that. Aim for at least 64 oz a day. You may not get that at first, but after a few weeks of trying you will. For the first two weeks I felt like I was constantly drinking---and I was! I couldn't tolerate protein shakes or anything like jello or pudding, I had stomach spasms pretty severe the first two weeks. I could only get down water (which I had to flavor with sugar free flavorings to get down) and sugar free popsicles. My surgeon said that was okay. We have protein stores in our bodies to get us through the first few weeks. But it is still good to aim to get protein in as much as your tummy will allow. And I took my meds one pill at a time, spaced out throughout the day. Your family clearly loves you and are concerned, but only YOU know how you feel. It's okay to remind them of that. If they need more info they can read your packet from the surgeon or come read posts here. π You'll get through this. Just keep sipping!! π -

@ms.sss I do love an ice-breaker π must be the manager in me π That sounds so nice - I have never tried lobster before but I am dying to! I am rather impressed that you had to open and clean it yourself, very skilled haha. It is a shame you had to miss out on yoga, but definitely for the best after eating the lobster! Hope the rest of your week is good -

Had my 4-week post-op appointment with my dietician today. She wants me to start aiming for 80g protein and 800 calories per day. Currently I'm averaging closer to 65g and 600 calories. We'll see how it goes this week! -
I think in general terms shorter cuts hide hair loss better - IF you do experience significant loss. I lost a lot of hair, in three distinct waves. Plus my hair grows (and regrows) abnormally slowly. I'm 28 months post surgery and my last phase of regrowth is just about below my ears now. I've had to cut my hair shorter than I normally would for about 18 months but I think I'll finally be back to my usual below shoulder length soon. Have to say it's been an opportunity to experiment that I would never have had otherwise! Maybe try new stuff if you need to?

I had my consultation and my psych eval. Iβm just waiting on my recommendation letter from my pcp and because I already see a therapist, they had to also write a brief note. Assuming they come back positive, Iβm cleared to move to the next phase. Which that is getting a letter sent to my insurance for approval of my surgery. Once itβs approved I can move to the pre surgery blood work. I do hope they get their letters in this week!
