Vacation right after surgery?!? Opinions!
VSGKirk replied to taylorelizabeth13's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just got back from Disneyland and 2 cruises last week and lost 5 lbs. As long as you're going to be resting (a lot), you should be fine because there are always fresh yogurts to be found, nice pureed Soups at all of the meals and the wait staff will accommodate just about any request. I stocked my cabin's fridge with Protein drinks to supplement as well. Walking laps on a cruise ship can be quite nice! -
Unfortunately, yogurt is the one thing I've had a negative reaction to so far. But there are a ton of recipes available out there for every stage, and it helps immensely to have choices. When you're limited to Protein shakes (I was for the first few days until I ordered a bunch of different things on mybariatricpantry) it is almost an effort to drink your protein. I lived on juice, gatorade and Water for a few days. It really gets better once you find a protein source that you can tolerate (hooray for Chike and Syntrax. Loads of flavors that really helped me). Walking and mild exercise are so much easier once you start getting some protein in. I was in miserable pain for the first...six days? It was hard to walk even part of a block, let alone the whole block. I wasn't sleeping well because I've never been a back sleeper either, so the first week I was pretty miserable (never enough that I regretted the decision, mind.) Coming to the forums here, plus a few other friends who have had the surgery and gave some pretty decent advice during that time kept me going and kept me positive. I think it was Day 7 that something just clicked. The pain was less. I was able to walk. And the more I walked, the better I felt. Prior to that, it was a lot of distracting myself so I didn't think about the physical discomfort. Reading, watching some of the shows my bf recorded while I was in the hospital...it helps if you focus on something else.

I haven't tried ice chips yet, I should probably give it a try. I'm doing okay with broth, but theres only so much I can take of the taste xD, as for the yogurt and oatmeal is that during the liquid stage or the Puree stage? but yeah we just need to hang in there, We will reach our goals! According to my lil plan, yogurt and cream of wheat is something I can start now...but there's no way. If I can't even do the Protein drinks, how the heck can I do yogurt and cream of wheat ???? ... ice chips help me get fluids in. let me know how u do. -
I am allowed plain yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, tuna, scrambled eggs, and avocados however all of these thing give me a really bad stomach ache!! I see that most people have been able to move up fairly easily but I am really struggling. [emoji24]

3 weeks post-op Am I doing this right?
crayon67 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am 3 weeks post-op sleeve surgery and am concerned about stretching my "pouch". I know there may be a bit of stretching down the line, I just am so nervous. I did not have any pain at all after surgery, have had energy (not back to work yet though so that may change), and started walking (slowly) on the treadmill 2 days post-op. I have eaten very finely chopped up chicken already as well as eggs, cottage cheese and Greek yogurt. I have not had that "full" feeling I have read about but I do know when I am satisfied and stop eating. I have not felt nauseous at all even the evening after the surgery. Are there others out there that have had it "easy" post - op? I have a super supportive family and I'm so excited about this new stage in my life. I just want to do it right. -
I was sleeved on Thursday, so we're close. I haven't tried anything other than plain Water and water with Crystal Light (I did not like it - it make me more thirsty). I tried some broth, but that didn't go well. Jello about made me yack. I can get thru an 8 ounce thinned out shake in about 30-40 minutes. I get frustrated that I can't take in more. I'm allowed 2 T. of "slip and slide" food - applesauce, Greek yogurt, sugar free jello, sugar free pudding, cottage cheese, etc. I can get the applesauce down, but again, that takes about 30 minutes. I'm feeling much better today - still a few gas pains now and then.

7 weeks post op and still doing 2 shakes per day
shellyd67 replied to shellyd67's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I can see the calories adding up with fancy shakes lol Mine are 192 calories each because I use 1% milk to mix them, so 1/2 of my daily calories are coming from shakes at this point. It's all I can do ... I get the other 300-400 calories with fish/seafood of some sort and maybe some cheese & yogurt ... -

I love strawberry lemonade this time of year, but I just can't enjoy it as much after surgery. I came up with a recipe yesterday morning for a strawberry lemonade Protein smoothie. It was very refreshing and I can't wait to have it again! Recipe: (Makes 1-2 servings) 1 cup Non-fat Plain Greek Yogurt 1 cup Fresh Strawberries, stems removed 3/4 cup ice cubes 2 tsp. lemon zest 1-2 Tbs. Splenda or stevia (to taste) (Optional) 1 scoop Unflavored Protein powder (or flavor of your choice) Mix all in a food processor or blender and enjoy! Gain weight....on purpose.
shiftymcgee replied to shiftymcgee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm allergic to whey and since it seems to be in everything I don't handle shakes so well. I do make a shake with blended cottage cheese and yogurt tho and it's quite good. I can eat great or like a trashcan and it doesn't seem to matter. I fluctuate up and down two or three pounds. I need to gain back quite a bit of fat as I'm having the fat sucked out and put into my bum. I don't want bum implants so I gotta get some fat on the go. -
Good morning! Like you, my schedule is always on the go go go. I was worried about maintaining the pre-op diet after returning to work, which admittedly I have not done yet as much surgery was just 2 days ago. However I started the diet before leaving for surgery, and was able to successfully eat on the go and still fit in line with the diet. My office has a cafeteria, but we also have plenty of restaurants on the good. I would bring just a small sandwich bag of 1 scoop of unflavored protein powered and mix it with soup broth I would buy from the cafe or restaurant. I was able to successfully keep up this way. I also purchased things I could leave there, like Greek yogurt single serve cups, or oatmeal packets. The option I favor is packing a full day's worth of meals in my lunchbox thought but totally understand that this is not always a possibility!

I never blended meat. I did eat a lot of hummus, guacamole, refried beans, chicken/crab/ham/tuna/egg salad made with a lot of Greek yogurt and mayo and put through the mini chopper till it was paste and thin mashed taters with gravy to satisfy my craving for "real food". -
I have to ck. w/ gabe on how many cc. i got. Today, Saturday, I woke up and had a cup of coffee. Of course, I had to spend the rest of the day sabotaging myself. I proceeded to eat cookies(5), lf yogurt, oatmeal, cheez stix and frozen yogurt at night. O f course, I don't feel too much of a difference from the fill. Ive got to stop testing and challenging myself. (25)

It could be from taking your meds with only liquids. I know if I take ANY meds without something mushy or semi-solid that I will be nauseous as soon as the medication hits the bottom of my stomach. Our new stomachs have a narrow curve at the bottom now so pills tend to sit there as they dissolve and it can irritate the stomach lining quite a bit if they are sitting on bare tummy. Try taking them with something solid or yogurt or pudding at the very least so that the pills can dissolve in the food and not directly on the stomach lining before passing into the pylorus.

Frustrated by lack of information/resources from dr
Sweettoothless replied to Tamzab's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is a lot of protein at first. I rely on tasteless protein powder that I can mix into fair life milk (lower sugar, higher protein) or mix into cottage cheese or yogurt. My diet started at 1/4 cup of food 3 x a day. And then the portion went up over time. And no snacking at all in between. Our rule is no drinking 15 mins before and 1 hour after eating. -

Was the surgery open? That totally sucks you still feel pain. I was so glad to stop taking the liquid Vicodin. Yuck! It sounds like so many doctors have different rules on when to eat. I can't go crazy but I got cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, refried Beans, creamy Soups, eggs, and I'm waiting to hear back from the Nut to see if there's anything else...I assume it's anything soft/mushy but I'm going to stick with mostly protein. -
Hi there, it sounds like you are doing well with your new banded life. I am enjoying a Protein and fruit shake most days around 11:00 or so. I'm not hungry in the morning. Today I skipped the Protein Shake because I knew I would be having lunch with my parents at a retirement center. Sometimes when I'm there I have a thick soup but today it was tomato and I don't like that plus it's thin, so I had a small bowl of cottage cheese and broccoli. I came home and ate a protein bar (200 calories 20 grams of protein -- the 20 that I missed out on by not having my shake). Dinners are whatever I am cooking for the family but just a little of it. If I'm hungry beforehand (usually, as I haven't quite got my timing down right), I might have some applesauce with a dollop of plain yogurt or something like that. I've been making chilis and stews and those seem very band-friendly. I like chicken thighs and will probably be making those next. I do them in stock so they are really falling apart. Last night I had the hungries after dinner and I had a Popsicle. That seemed to appease me.

the path of bandland isn't as straight and simple as we first think it to be.
barngal2003 commented on barngal2003's blog entry in Blog 50671
The last time I wrote I was getting ready for an upper gi because my surgeon suspected that my band had slipped a little. I went for the upper gi and despite not really being able to eat, vomiting a lot, and everything that I eat hurt when it hit, apparently everything is perfect. the change in positioning was either a fluke or it fixed itself when they removed all the fluid. So here i sit, just over a year down the road, 90 pounds lighter, not where i want to be and questioning if i can pull off the last 40. i'm trying to cut back on my calories as much as possible, as well as up my exercise. i need another fill, my 2 cc isn't doing much of anything. i find i do better portion wise if i eat like 6 meals a day. not at all what they want me doing, but i get sooo hungry. and i can control it a little better if i eat more meals (small ones) more closely together. sadly since having the fluid out, and only 2cc put back in i've gained 2 lbs....i was up 4 but have since lost 2 back. hopefully i can get back on the horse and get a good rhythm going again with the weightloss. has anyone else had the problem where they can't seem to get a good green zone? i thought i had mine, dare i say i did. 5.5 cc. but i just had to get that stupid tomato stuck and since then (july '09) i haven't been able to get a GOOD restriction like i had! i mean before it was ....maybe 4 tyson chicken nuggets, or a side salad, or if i were particularly hungry the kids steak bites from texas roadhouse with a sweet potato, plain with butter on the side....that was fantastic restriction!.....i could get a serving of greek yogurt then and be good to go, even when i got back to 5.8 cc yogurt went right thru! not to mention everything else too!.. is it just me? or has anyone else out there had this problem too??? i can't fathom having gone into such tremendous debt to pay for this to have me possibly have blown it in the first year and be doomed to never see my finish line. meanwhile...i'm still going to the gym, farm work, and contemplating taking a belly dance class for the heck of it. -
When going to a restaurant, what do you order?
Debbie P replied to laniayala's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Donna, Be careful with fast food. The McDonalds fruit and yogurt has tons of calories, its awful. I looked it up and I remember its real high. When in doubt, order brothy soups, no creamed soups, lots of fat. Good luck. -
paulinamdiaz welcome newbie 3 weeks PO?? since you didn't say otherwise, hope things are going smoothly with your recovery you are probably still in the clear liquid phase???? not supposed to "treat" yourself to yogurt, cottage cheese til the "soft" stage i was lucky - i llllloved the popsicle!!!! no prob eating lots!!!! have you tried chicken broth??? unless your doc/nut tells you differently - you have to wait on the yogurt sorry bud

I am a total foodie and love this recipe for ease of cooking. Peel seed and chop one cumcumber. Mix with greek yogurt, chopped garlic, and dill. Set to the side. Cut up salmon into small portions. Think of how much you can eat. Make some bigger ones if you have a significant other. Place a piece of salmon in the middle of a piece of foil and top with yogurt cucumber mixture. Fold foil over making a pouch, sealing edges so no steam escapes. Bake in a 375 degree oven approximately 12 minutes, or until fish flakes easily with a fork. TA-DA! yumyumyum!

I haven't tried it, but it seems like it should work because it's basically cutting out most carbs (except in the yogurt and beans) and consuming Protein and drinking lots of water/fluids to help flush things out. When it says "must have 45 grams of protein supplements" does it mean in addition to the 3 oz/5 times a day thing?

I am almost where you are. I completed all my requirements last week, but am waiting for my Dr. to receive my psych evaluation so they can submit to insurance for approval. I am hoping to get approval very soon so I can get a surgery date. I am nervous about the pre-op diet too. I will have to do 1 week of clear liquids+ protein shakes. Then after surgery my surgeon has the first meal be clear liquids then switches you to full liquids for 2 weeks. Since there full liquids includes cream of wheat and low fat yogurt I think I will be fine on that.
