  1. 5 month surgiversary today. I'm down 84 lbs, less than 22 lbs to normal BMI which is my goal.

I could not be more happy. In a month I see my neurosurgeon to decide I'm having back surgery on 10/3 or not. Hoping new MRI pictures will show an improvement in my back compared to the pictures in March.

      Geri Marie

Yes, so far. I had it on June 26th. Slow healing but all the pressure on my sciatic nerves has been relieved. I'm getting sleeved so I can take the rest of the 100lbs of extra weight off my body!!

    2. Meryline

      Meryline

I had one on 12/14/15, and it worked for a while, but weight gain made it not last, which is why I had the surgery. I'm hoping the weight loss will prevent a new one. I'm over 50 lbs less now than at the last back surgery. @Geri Marie

  2. I'm new to this site. I live in Portland Oregon and I'm looking at getting the gastric sleeve surgery. I have a feeling my PCP will not want me to do this based on other weight loss convo's we've had. She feels I need to work harder at losing weight. I work a desk job 10 hours a day, ALL my blood tests look great (except for my Vit D levels are too low). My tests (including cholesterol, blood sugar/glucose, thyroid, etc) all looked great because I eat healthy, I workout regularly but CANNOT drop weight (5'8" & 300lbs) I don't have high BP or diabetes but I have back issues and sleep apnea. Every year that goes by I'm steady gaining 10-15 pounds no matter what I do. And that's when I'm watching what I'm eating! I have tried every program, diet, pill, etc. I have dual coverage, Providence Health Plan and BCBS. Does anyone know if you HAVE to get a referral from your primary or are there other ways of getting this done? Also I need a surgeon who will do the surgery without making me sign a consent for a blood transfusion. Anyone with dual coverage that can tell me what their out of pocket expense was? Thank you!

You might need a new dr. I switched because of the same kind of attitude. Couldnt be happier.

      HeatherS.

Now that I can see your whole status, I'm not sure how helpful this is but there are a lot of independent bariatric surgeons you could try (and pay out of pocket). I have Kaiser and was not made to sign for a blood transfusion.

      Hi,

I noticed that you are from Poirtland, Oregon. I am from Roseburg, Oregon. Which Dr are you going too? I had my RNY done in Coos Bay, Oregon. I kind of fired my Surgeon. Then I started going to OHSU. They took me in right away. I had to have a ENDOSCOPE with a Dialation. Not my 1st but my 5th. I was told that most DR.'s won't take a patient to fix another DR's mess up. I so appreciate them. When are you scheduled to have your WLS? I would love to follow yur journey if you don't mind. If you want to email me that would be great. I can give you my email address if you want it. Again, I just get so excited when I see someone local. Well, kind of local. Good Luck

  3. Last appt is next Wed.  The center won't schedule surgery until approval comes from insurance.  Booo!  Says it may take up to 10-15 business days.  Guess I'll be calling my insurance so often to make sure someone is doing his/her job.  Once received they schedule pretty fast...but if I have to have a pre-op of two weeks then it looks as if I have another two weeks after approval.  I'm guessimating mid May for my surgery; which would be just about 4 months from start.

  4. I got home late last night from an exhausting nine-day work trip to Tampa.  Even with all the disruption to my normal routines, I still lost a little over 1 pound (and I had red wine every day of trip).  My partner was able to go with me, thank goodness.  My weight loss journey and transformation was a central focus and topic of conversation the entire time as I have known many of these colleagues for 10 years or more.  As has always been the case during my journey, I answered questions honestly and spoke of my pre-op, surgery, and post-op experiences.  I got nothing but support, congratulations, and best wishes from anyone.  And one person even confided in me that my success has given her the confidence to schedule an appointment with her PCP to talk about WLS.  This is why I have been transparent.  That decision may not be for everyone, but I will certainly never regret it.  Now, I move onward (thankful that I am back home and I can settle into my normal food and drink routine!).

    1. Newme17

      Newme17

That is exactly what I'm doing. Being transparent. I want others who are struggling with weight to see success and be inspired too. Soon!

  5. I went to my first Dr. appointment since my sleeve and I was surprised when I got on the scale. A friend of mine had a bet, she thought I had lost around 15 pounds since the surgery, and I thought maybe 10. Well, I've lost 19 pounds in my 2 weeks since surgery!!! I didn't think it would be that much. I've noticed some weight loss in my face, but that's about it. I was very pleasantly surprised. SO YAY ME! LOL

  6. Hi everyone! I'm me and nervous. I just turned 60 years old. I think I'm officially grown up now. I'm young at heart, goofing around with my grandchildren all nine of them. I have had crohns disease since I was 19'years old. I still managed to make it through nursing school and more ask retired after 35 years. My husband and I have custody of three of our grandchildren after our son in law died and our daughter ran away. One of the things I would like to run by the members is my feeling of selfishness about having this gastric sleeve. I'm overweight, diabetes, hip replacement and crohns. I feel that if I didn't make it through surgery, it would absolutely devastate the grandkids again! I never thought I could even have a sleeve done due to having all of my colon and rectum removed. So, I have an ileostomy. I have a huge hernia at the site. I went to Duke University and the gastroenterologist suggested I have weight loss surgery because if he repairs the hernia, the weight will cause it to come back. I'm scheduled in three months.

    1. larta

      larta

      Wow , you have quite a full plate, and even though you have had your health problems, you have managed to prevail. Not to mention, the sadness of your daughter running off etc;

If you have confidence in the surgeon, and he thinks its a good idea. I would go for it. Do not hold back because, you are afraid something will happen to you. Something will happen to you if you don't get in the best possible health you can. You owe this to yourself. Do not feel selfish. It takes courage to go though what you have gone though and you still have a beautiful attitude. You are too young, to settle for less health then you deserve.

      I wish you the best!

      colleen 5595

To Sweet as peaches, thank you so much for your comments. I trust God completely, and I will do my best to prepare for the surgery. I sometimes have this all under control and my emotions in check. Then it starts to creep back in. The what if's. I totally agree with you about doing what's going to help me with my health. The kids think it's going to be great that I can do more with them. My doctor is very straight forward and doesn't give you the warm and fuzzy's. When I was nursing I tried to make every patient feel important and special, because they all were. Maybe I'm just reading too much into this experience. I have six weeks to go!! Thank you for responding to my message.

    3. colleen 5595

      colleen 5595

To larta, I didn't think anyone was responding to my introduction so today I wrote another one. It's basically the same. Thank you for your encouragement. We were talking about my daughter, well, she Skyped my grandson with a new baby on her lap. That was horrendous. Poor kids, they told everyone that their mother ran away and started a new family. These are the times where I just want to eat everything in sight! I was telling my surgeon that everybody in my house is fat, even the dogs!! My little granddaughter isn't. I have to get this emotional eating calmed down. What I have been doing is eating about the same amount of food that I would eat several months out from the surgery. I've been doing so much research. You'd think that being a nurse, that I would have this one in the bag!. Oh, no! Not even close! I'm so happy that I can chit chat with people on this forum. I promise I won't be so long winded. I'm just excited! Where are you in your journey? I'd love to hear about what you have been through!! God bless.

  7. 7/8 - Extremely healthy keto day.

7/9 - Halo Top 1/2 Cup Chocolate Mocha Chip (I am in heaven!!). Healthy keto day. Weighed in at 208.4 lbs. Gained 1.4 lbs

7/10 - Hung out at Coney Island with my Mom, little Brother and my dog Buddy aka Rasta Scoobs. At Nathans Philly Chicken with no bun. The guy gave me the nasty look when I ordered it. (It was like really, you are going to come here and want to eat healthy at Nathans?). With a nasty tone, he says, "It's going to be the same price and the same amount of meat." So in an even nastier tone, I said, "Did I ask about the amount of meat or the price? No. I asked for a Philly Chicken with No Bun. Thank you." He just placed my order and my brother says, "Don't be surprise if you find some special sauce or a hair floating around in it lol."

7/11 - Keto Day. Decided to step on the scale and weighed 205.4 lbs. I was like WTF!!! What is going on? At this point my weight is fluctuating up and down. I think I maybe starting stall soon and my body is warning me. It could also be water weight.

7/12 - Another Keto Day. Went out to eat with my mom and brother and I was upset because I could have the Tacos of Bell. My mom keeps saying, "Oh you have your meal prep and you have been doing so good on your diet. Taco Bell is not good for you." I was like then why are you eating it. She says, "I'm grown and your mama. Do as I say and not as I do."  She is right but sooo annoying sometimes.

7/13 - My day was healthy. Received two new Hidrate Spark bottles. Gave one to my mom and brother. They are in love and I set them up on their phones.

Breakfast: 2 egg whites boiled with salt.

    Snack: 2 pickle slices

Lunch 1 - 2 : 2.1 oz of turkey with a tomatoes, a little cheese, romaine lettuce and my special dressing. (Broken up into 2 meals)

    Snack: 21 olives.

Dinner 1 - 2: 4 oz of ground beef, a little cheese, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream and salsa. (Broken up into 2 meals)

Sorry about the stall. Good for you for standing for yourself and you were polite. I love that part. Your brother cracked me up.

@Newme17That is her favorite saying. Other than, "I am not your friend. We will become friends when you pay a bill in this household." Oh that one makes me laugh because I will look at her like...really....I pay bills....yeah....we friends now...lol. I bring my bottle everywhere but I have been slacking in getting about 40 oz lately.

@Meryline I have an insulated bottle that I use for the gym. I will take those ounces and it to the Hidrate manually. However, I used the Hidrate for when I am at work. During that time I will not drink much of anything because I am busy working.

@Apple1 I really am running on autopilot at this point. I think every mom has said that line lol.

@Sweet as Peaches It is okay. The stalls will happen. I am not stressing it. I have come so far and I will continue to move forward. There is always bumps in the road and we have to jump over them. I just wanted him to understand that just because I am heavy does not mean that I do not want to watch what I am eating. Like do not judge a book by its cover. My little brother is just like my mother.

  8. So I've been trying to wake up early and get my workouts in, only did it twice.  I can't seem to shake off my tiredness in the mornings!  I know if I kept it up, I'd make it into a habit and it'll get easier, but I don't know if I want to do that.  When I workout in the evenings, take my shower, I'm so ready to lay down and sleep.  I think I'll stick to my evenings.

Now, if I decided to stop working, then I'll do mornings...around 9 or 10.  LOL

    1. Apple1

I have to get up at 5:00 am so I can have time to run before work. It was hard the first week, but I have adjusted now.

    2. Newme17

      Newme17

@biginjapan it is hard with work schedules and when/if you've got young kids, etc. finding the time can be hard. Apple has been able to get up in the am. But don't feel bad if you can't make the intentional workout as much as you'd like. Exercise only accounts for 20% of your physique anyhow, tsbawesome for your overall health but to lose the weight, diet is 80%. Don't you walk a lot to work/from etc? Or am I mixing you up with someone else?

    3. Apple1

      Apple1

You are right about diet being the most important!!

I think I have the most flexible schedule with no kids left at home. I can also show up to work anytime between 8-9 am or later lol. I am on salary so if I am late I just stay a little later in the afternoon to make it up.

  9. I had my sleeve surgery on 9/15/2014. I lost 85bls and still loosing 10 to 15bls a year, never going up. I started at a 50 waist size and now down to a 38 to 40 waist and feeling excellent. I had not been back the scale in 12 hours because I'm strength exercising. My over all health is excellent no type 2 diabetes, no high blood pressure and ulcers on ankles. Sleeping good and eating good with small portion sizes. Feel good when out in pubic or at a gathering of people. This is the best surgery I every had. I have taking up cooking for my self. No more eating at restaurants. I enjoying my new life style.

  11. I have 10 days until my 1 year. I still have 15 pounds I need to lose to get to my goal weight. I will be disappointed if I don't lose at least 5 more pounds before my anniversary so I decided to put myself on the same liquid diet that I did before surgery: 11 days focused on protein shakes. If I reach the 150s, I will be delighted. I know once the weight comes off, I can keep it off because I am good at maintaining. I actually think it would be good to put myself on this diet 1x a year every year to remind myself of the difficult time I had before surgery. I will be sad to miss out on a few nice dinners I would have otherwise consumed like the wedding I am going to on Saturday and the birthday party on Friday. Or the Wings game tomorrow. Or the potluck at church yesterday... But, you know what's better than free food? 150s.

    1. Mattymatt

      Mattymatt

Why would you be disappointed? You're a success in every measure!

  12. Almost 10 months post sleeve, and I have noticed that it's time for me to add in one more lifestyle change on top of my plant based diet.  I have added IF, intermittent fasting, 16:8.  I was going to wait until one year, but it seems as if I've got to a standstill and I've got about 30-40 lbs to lose still.  For those who don't know, IF is not a diet...it's just changing WHEN you eat. I fast for 16 hours (mostly sleeping) and then I eat all my food within 8 hours (or I try to).  I work out during my fast as well for extra benefits.  I implemented it three days ago and I'm down 2 lbs now.  I used to do IF during my obese days and I was successful for three months, changing my body's physique and burning fat, BUT I wasn't successful in my head. I'm sure I probably got injured (as it was always happening then) and I succumbed to emotional eating as I always did.  Now, my head is in a better place, and I'm in control MOST of the time. Still not perfect, and probably never will be, but I'll strive to be so.  So, here's to a Newme...in 2018 too!  :)

    1. Newme17

      Newme17

@nursejackie, I know about the night eating...it's a habit I have too (I still struggle with wanting to eat right before bed). With the IF, I fast from 7pm to11am. Lots of water gets me through during the hours I'm awake during the fast, but, as time goes on, it gets easier to do and I meet my water goal. The first three days are hardest, at least for me. Since I wake up most mornings at 6am...I tie my fast over with a cup of coffee and about 35 calories of creamer in it which isn't enough to actually break my fast. Currently, I'm doing a moderate workout (bike, elliptical) for about 45 mins in the mornings before I break the fast. (I brought a banana with me the first few days, just in case my body couldn't handle it, but I was fine without it). The hardest part is trying to eat all my food in the 8 hour window. I felt too full the first day. Scaled back on some and felt better the next. Then I decided I'm not going to worry about it and just make sure I eat when I'm hungry. I do always try to eat something right before I start the fast again though. So far, it's been going well.

I'll try my best to update every so often.

  13. This weekend I went shopping for clothes after yet another purge of the closet. I've gone from a 3XL shirt and 44 pants to a Large shirt and 34 pants! It still feels surreal. I'm 18 lbs from my goal weight and 4 lbs from moving from the obese category to "overweight." I'm down 70 lbs from my 10/16/17 surgery date, and 114 lbs down overall in a year.

  14. I am 4weeks post surgery and now on soft diet.  How many calories per day?  I had fixed my myfitnesspal app to do 1200 calories with 75% protein, 15% fat and 10% carbs.  Is this correct?  I'm curious, what are some of you doing?

    Thanks.

I am freaking out also. I started my liquids yesterday. My surgery is 12/19/17.

Yup, I'm very nervous as this is my first surgery. My wife is two weeks out from her sleeve and doing great...so that helps keep me calm.

  16. I am freaking out also. I started my liquids yesterday. My surgery is 12/19/17.

  17. Sorry everyone I didn't realize all my old  information came up.  I just had the sleeve surgery last Thursday 10/18/2018 and my pre weight was 364 Today it is 352.

  18. Ok so I Had Gastric Bypass on Monday Sept 24, 2018. The Surgeon said everything went well and that I should be going home the next day.  The next day came and by abdomen was so distended I could hardly breath. I was up walking doing everything thing I was suppose to but it was literally the worst feeling ever. My abdomen was as hard as a rock. They kept me an extra day because the bloating was putting me in some pretty intense pain. I felt like I was 10 months pregnant. I guess it was because my intestines had not woken up yet from the anesthesia, to start the process of eliminating all the gas they pumped into me during surgery.

However here I sit at home  Sept 27 2018 finally released still feeling full but defiantly not as bad as the previous 3 days.

So I guess my question is. I have had nothing but water and watered down juice for my 3 days in the hospital. How it that I went up almost 5 lbs. Does anybody have any idea Why?

                                               Thanks Faith

    1. MG1776

      MG1776

It is most likely just due to fluid retention from the IV, etc. Things will start to drop very soon. Just keep focusing on your recovery and sipping water/juices, etc.

  19. 10 months post op, 160s.

Sick (first time since surgery) because I spent time around too many sick people recently, totally worth it.

But now I'm wondering what flu season will be like 😓

  20. Stall is finally broken and I am losing again. Stalls suck but I understand them much better now. I am still feeling great and have kicked my workouts up a notch. I went to an arm/abs class that turned out to be all men and "me".  The dudes walked in with their 30 lb hand weights and I have my little 7.5/10 lbs and I was thinking to myself...what did I get myself into, and am I going to embarrass myself?  Well I decided to stick it out and although I couldn't do everything the dudes were doing, I did a pretty darn good job of keeping up and I am proud of myself for being able to stick with it. I decided I am going back again tomorrow and I am going to kill it again. I belong there too!

I'm embarrassed to say this, but I'm afraid to run. Scared to death that I'll damage my knees or break a bone in my feet. I don't know how far down I'll have to go before this isn't a fear for me.

    2. SleeveinIL

      SleeveinIL

I am afraid to run as well. My left knee is bone on bone but I had to try it and see if I could actually do it. I will not be doing it on a regular basis tho. The pain in the knee is killing me today. I have done everything but have a knee replacement and nothing has helped. Doc doesn't really want me to get one at my age. He says I am too young.

That sounds awful. And no ibuprofen. (I soooo miss my ibuprofen :()

I spoke with a co-worker today who was sleeved about a year and a half ago. She just started taking fairly large amounts of ibuprofen. I think she misunderstood the pharmacist, or maybe the pharmacist didn't know she'd had wls, but I told her that my dr. strictly forbade it. She googled it and now understands. I told her to speak with her dr.

  22. 10 weeks out from surgery, and I just ate popcorn (Smartfood white cheddar, 3/4 cup) for the first time since surgery. It was SO GOOD; now I just have to see if it sits well. So far, so good.

Have been gradually working on trying new things; so far, nothing has given me even semi-major issues, but taco seasoning still doesn't sit well in my stomach.

Dang! You're pretty lucky. I am still on soft foods and having enough difficulty with them. Well, one day right!?

My program moves faster than most - one day clear liquids, one week full liquids, two weeks puree, and two weeks soft, then no restrictions (other than those your body creates) at five weeks.

      You'll get there!
