  1. Hi all, I've been lurking for a while , but now that things are finally starting to move along I'm gettting excited and nervous too. Last Wed I went for my first consult with the nutritionist, met one of the doctors, but not the doctor that will be doing my surgery, met the PA, and made my 2 months appt out for the next visit with the nutritionist. Since then I have scheduled a gallbladder ultrasound, and the psych eval., both of these for next week. From what I've read on my insurance coverage, I don't think I will have a problem with them paying, or doing a lot of jumping thru hoops. If I can just lose enough weight between now and my next nutrition appt I think things will move along pretty fast, hopefully. Now nerves are getting to me, but not too bad. Just have to keep my eye on the prize, lol. Anyway, just wanted to say hi. Lisa

    April 9Th Sleevers Are Here!

I went out in PUBLIC today! Went to the mall and bought some shoes for my hubby and a pretzel for my boy. :-) My jeans made me sore and uncomfortable and I got tired fast. I was happy to get back home and put on my PJs. Still it was nice to see the world again. :-D
  4. I was never a smoker. I do have an occasional toddy. But the calories add up fast!

I Am Almost Two Months Out And...

I am about 10 weeks out now and can eat just about anything I want in the 5-8oz range. I have never really had problems eating anything from the very first day either. I can eat 2 hard boiled eggs (chewed very good) in about 30 minutes. I made some chicken (fully cooked, frozen in a bag) with some cheese the other night and was able to eat about a cup of it and had about a half cup left over for lunch. I agree, the more you chew, the more you can eat on some things. I am a fast eater and have to watch myself alot. I cannot tolerate sweets with my sleeve and I absolutely have to wait 30 minutes before drinking after eating with my sleeve or I find that it comes right back up. This could be due to me having a pouch from the 17yr old band that was there. I love my little sleeve. It might seem like you are eating too much but really, if you track your intake/calories in MyFitnessPal, you will see how little you are still eating. I have also found that I am a sloooooow loser on the scale but I am dropping inches like crazy. If you think you are eating too much, get you a little bowl that is 4-6 oz and measure your food that way. That will really help you put into perspective how much you arent really eating! (Considering I used to eat a 10pc chicken mcnugget, large fries and large coke from McDonalds like my husband does!) Just remember to Keep Rockin' Your Sleeve!!!!

5 days post op no urge to eat?

My 1st 10 days, I didn't eat much of anything either. I was living on sugar free popsicles and Crystal Light. Since you're not taking too much in, don't expect much to come out the other end. :-p Including fasting the day before surgery, I basically didn't eat for 11 days. My system was used to processing 3000+ calories a day. That's a lot of empty storage space to fill, before it needs to clear out. Just keep drinking as much as you can and give your new stomach a chance to heal. In the first few months post-op, it wasn't unusual for me to only go once a week. I had one spell where it was almost 2 weeks, I got concerned and took some Milk of Magnesia. If you're concerned, you really should consult your doc. He can decide the best course of action. http://www.bariatricpal.com/blog/9018/entry-31570-constipation-and-milk-of-magnesia-or-how-fema-declared-my-bathroom-a-national-disaster/

Alcohol - haven't seen much sbout it

I like to drink and drink most nights. But beer is out (one sip gave me massive gas pains!) and I can't drink fast, so I have naturally cut down. Usually can't do more than two now without starting to feel drunk, anyway.

    dizziness

I just had labs done with my PCP about a month or so ago for something unrelated. It was kind if spur of the moment, so I wasn't fasting so blood sugar was a little high and hormones were a little out if whack but otherwise they were good. I wasn't experiencing the frequency of dizziness so I didn't even bring it up to her. Although I think I had "white coat syndrome" in the doctors office causing a higher blood pressure reading, I checked it in a grocery store a couple weeks ago and it was very low....so I'm thinking that could be it. @@bikrchk I will take your advice and try the Gatorade and see how that works! Otherwise it's back to the doctor for me!

    6 days post op

it's super glad you are here and posting to everyone. The thing that rings most in my ears from what everyone says here is..... It gets better! Maybe you are still having the effect of being put under? Those drugs are heavy and effect people in different ways! Take it slow friend!! Rest sip walk repeat. The nurse told me that flexing and pointing my feet 10 times in a row will be important those days after surgery. And if anything- I'm going to need your cheering on for me next week when I am where you are! Hold fast!

    how do you start

When i was 57, i lost a good amount of weight with diet and exercise. I had a core workout tape i liked and then walked on my treadmill. I started with only 15 min because i was not really into it at all. Each few days i would add 5 minutes until i got to a mile, then 2 miles. One day i thought..hum... I bet i could run maybe 15 seconds... So every few minutes i would break into a run for those 15 seconds. This went on for quite a bit because i still was at about 225 or so so had confidence that i could really run for a longer period of time. I finally realized it was not that hard to run since your stride lengthens so i gave a quarter mile a go... And boom... Started doing quarter mile runs and quarter mile walks for a week or so then bumped to half mile walk half mile run and then running the full two miles. Im sure true runners would call my pitiful run a jog, not sure how fast you go to call it a run or if it depends on stride length. Bottom line though... It was all about confidence and taking time to build up to the run phase. I do plan to begin the c25k program this time once i am cleared to do more than just walk (already doing at least a mile a day or more at 12 days out) and i plan to order a running book so that i learn more about form, the foot strike, etc. i also need new shoes, but from experience, know my foot size decreases with weight lose so i hate to get new shoes only to have them get too big in a short amount of time. Knowing you can run two miles or more is just the best. Self esteem soars. So yep, i am now 60, but know i will be back running soon. I want to feel that pride and see the amazing changes in my body. Oh yeah... When walking, i always did face and neck exercises, as well as when i was driving. I swear it made a difference especially in my neck. Good luck Grace. I wish you the best.
  11. What a decision! Im with Kaiser South Sacramento. Things movin fast! I have to drop 15lbs pre-op. Im down 10 & waiting for my Sike(physcological) Dr, appointment. They then schedule surgery and I have to lose 5 more LBS. before. Total looks like 3-4 months from start to surgery. On a 1200 calorie now. Not bad but not easy. Man I want a cheeseburger and fry or fish N chips. LOL. Good news is I want a NEW ME MORE!! I was originally sold on the lapband but have been won over by the Gastric Sleeve bypass. Lap band longterm did not appeal to me. Why go through all this to fail. Plus,Insurance only covers 1 surgery so If it failed and they had to take it out I have to pay for the next one. I also found out that It is approx. $100.00 each time they have to fill the port. Insurance wont cover. Anyway I cannot wait to get this ball a rolling. Ive been practicing chewing my food, small bites, taking my time and no liquids when I eat. Started the vitamin supplements too! My Dr. has done over 1000 surgeries with awsome success. So im comfortable. Good luck to all my other newbies!! and Pre-Oppers! Love to stay in touch and share our progress! Email anytime!
  12. Hello all! I've been reading up on here and decided to join in! I started journey back in July 2013, after numerous failed attempts on my own. I was initially discouraged because my BMI was under 40. Luckily, or rather unlucky I also have hbp. I continued with my 6months required insurance visits with my M.D., psych evaluations, met with the nutritionists, surgeon fast forward to now. I have a surgery date, (March 3) and I am just awaiting insurance approval. My BMI did balloon up to 40. (The holidays tasted so delish my insurance is known for being difficult, as much as I love their benefits. I'm a bit nervous, anxious and growing impatient, lol! How did you all manage? How about alerting employers prior to surgery? How long on average were you able to be off work? Thanks!

    weight loss....

I also think 10 minutes is too fast. We are supposed to eat slower in order to feel full faster. If that makes any sense. It takes 20 minutes for your stomach to alert your brain that you're getting or are full. I'm back to regular foods now. This week, I've been bouncing UP in ounces. No loss so far although official WI is Friday. It's not looking good for a loss this week and looking like a GAIN! I've lost about 8lbs since the day of surgery (15 if you count the 7lbs of surgery gain that took a week and a half to lose!!). I've always been a slow loser. Can't see why this will be any different for me. Speaking of the surgery gain, do you include that in your post-surgery loss or just the other weight?
  14. Congratulations on getting home so fast...I had to stay 2 nights! Keep moving around and you will feel better soon
  15. 53 pounds in 5 months is a very decent loss, so don't panic too much about the time its taking... after all, I'm sure it took you years to put on the weight (just like most of us on here) so taking a year or so to get it off isn't terrible! Without knowing what exactly you're eating and whether you're hitting all of your daily requirements, we can't help you much tho. Are you eating healthy foods - Protein first, veggies next and complex carbs in moderation after that? Are you tracking your calories, carbs and fat - every bite of food that goes into your mouth - to really know how much you are eating? Are you getting your recommended levels of protein and Water daily? Are you doing moderate exercise? Can you clarify what you mean by eating all "the stuff I want" - meaning stuff that is bad for you (sugars, simple carbs, high fat, or heaven forbid junk food or fast food restaurants and crap in a box type prepackaged meals from the grocery)? (goodness I do hope not!!) You will lose some weight in the beginning even if you are eating absolute crap due to the restriction and the loss of appetite. But if you haven't thrown out all the crap food habits and taught yourself how to eat healthy, whole foods during the year or so you have before your body adjusts to the sleeve... then you will regain the weight. The sleeve is not a magical fix that means you don't have hard work ahead of you. It is a tool. It won't do all the work for you, you have to use it correctly and work HARD at it if you want to succeed. That being said, you are losing weight, and sometimes it just goes slowly. If you are tracking your food, eating healthy, and getting all of your daily requirements in, then you just get to be one of the "lucky" ones that will take longer to get the weight off - and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But yeah, it sucks just the same to not be one of those types that gets to drop 100 pounds in 3 months and be at goal weight in a year. So do give us more details to work with and I'm sure there are many others here that can give you more ideas on things to look at and try.
  16. I am 5 weeks out now and there are times things hurt my pouch too. I am on a regular diet now, but I can't seem to tolerate meat of any kind right now, even though I could 3 weeks ago. My NUT explained that some of us don't have the stomach enzymes that we need to break certain foods down like meats at first, and it takes some people longer than others to be able to eat them again. Be patient. In the meantime, I can eat cheese, yogurt, edamame, and a bunch of other things just fine and can get in my Protein with non-meat things. I do find if I eat or ever drink a sip of Water too fast, my ouch will cramp up and it HURTS!! It will take up to a couple of hours sometimes to quit cramping. I just wait it out, maybe sip some warm camomile tea, and then it all seems okay again.

    Random pain at port site

I was banded on 17 August 09.. Everything went well.. I was on the treadmill.. and decided it was time to start jogging.. so I began, and felt this pull feelingnear my port...two weeks later, I finally went back to my Doctor, after feeling this pain intermittently.. and also like a bulging near the port site... they sent me over to the hospital for a cat scan same day.... and its a pocket of fluid surrounding my port... in time my body will absorb it.. they also started me on an antibiotic.. they can drain the fluid.. but with me getting ready to move to colorado if 5 days, its better to let me absorb it.. if its a continual issue.. it cannot hurt to have your Doc check it out.. what could have been a big mess for me, was easily thwarted by an appt, a cat scan.. and a confident surgeon!
  18. Thank you for you response, hopefully my recovery process is fast.

The "I truly have no shame" PB question

Weetsin, thank you for so accurately decribing this I too have the random , yet foodless amazing slime. I am always amazed at the sheer texture and amout of the stuff.. so here is explaination I have found, when you eat too fast or you dont chew enough something gets stuck , it holds the bottom of your esophogus open and it reacts because it thinks you have something stuck in it by prducing a inhumane amout of thick gooey slime to try to lubracate and unstick what ever is stuck.. I suffer with this at random, but I have found smaller forks and no white bread of any form helps avoid this. I spoke to my Dr about it and he assures me that that is a sign of good restriction with bad behavior.. at least were doing something right. I have tried to hold ogg on the heaving of slime, but mostly I feel like Im filling up, and with one blllahh.. Birth to homemade lava lamp style slime is made!!
  20. I'm 3 days post-op and as of right now it HURTS to drink fast. I like to chug as well, but with a 4 oz stomach it's just not possible.
  21. Well, I've been having issues after my surgery. The first was the infection in the left incision site. That incision had to be opened back up and it's had to be packed daily since so it can heal from the inside out. At one point they thought I might be getting a second infection in the same site so being a weekend, I was perscribed hefty antibiotics. I ended up having to see my surgeon because the visiting nurse was concerned and it turned out it was healing great and my surgeon said I could stop the antibiotic if I wanted. I took it one more day then just couldn't take how it made me feel so stopped as she suggested. Well that was about 10 days ago. Since then I've had bathroom "issues" but, I figured it was the antibiotics the day it was bad and then after that figured it was my diet because I'm on the Protein only stage....no carbs, Fiber etc. I won't be on stage 5 which includes fruits, veggies and healthy carbs until next week. Anyway....I couldn't take it anymore. Today was bad and I felt I couldn't leave the house so I called her. She said it's either this C. diff or I've become lactose intolerant. I told her I thought about the lactose too so didn't have any and it still happened. She said the testing will show which it is. The visiting nurse came today to pack my wound and they naturally ask questions on how I'm doing each day. I told her what was going on and explained what "it" looked like etc. She said it really does sound like C diff. So we shall see. I read about this C. diff and it said some relief can come by eating starchy foods. I didn't have anything to eat today because I just wasn't up to it. I've made sure to keep hydrated. We have saltines in the house and the explanation said they were a good choice so I had about 6 saltines today so see if it helps a bit. Mashed potatoes didn't help when I had them yesterday or the day before. (sigh) I know after this all clears up I'll feel better and be grateful that I've done this...but for right now man oh man, I'm tired of visiting the restroom and feeling like a prisoner in my own home. I'm also hoping if it is C. diff we've caught it fast enough so that no other complications happen. I guess a few days will tell what's going on. I just wanted to let folks know what's going on so that if you're going through any of this you'll know too. Thanks for listening/reading.
  22. I'm 6 weeks out, exercising regularly, drinking all of my Water, 600-700 calories/day, 80+ grams/protein, and I'm down 16 pounds since the day of surgery (about 20 lbs for the 6-month weight loss program prior to surgery). I would love to be down 70 lbs by next week, but I don't think that it is going to happen! :-) Or even 56 pounds in 3 months. Both of you who posted about being concerned about your rate of weight loss are doing awesome--congratulations! I have always been a slow loser due to hypothyroidism, but it is funny how some posters feel like you are losing slowly when for others, the rate would be really fast! I guess it's all relative. We do all lose differently and we have to have a "good" that is good for us personally. I think it's the poem Desidirata that says: "Do not compare yourselves to others, for there will always be greater or lesser people [rates of weight loss], and you will become bitter or vain." LOL! But it's easier said than done.
  23. I was just banded on August 26, 2011. My insurance paid for everything and required the 6 months of pre op therapy. I have never had any type of surgery before so i'm healing very quickly but my appetite is also coming back fast. I'm not due for my first fill till sept. 20th. I'm not eating very much when i eat, i'm just eating more frequently. Is that normal? I've been eating pudding, cream of wheat, yogurt, soup and protein drinks. Today i'm allowed to start having bananas and strawberries. I'm craving something more solid but am afraid to try anything in fear of being miserable or throwing up. I haven't thrown up even once, but people have told me that happens sometimes when you first start out on solids. Is this true? I've lost 20 pounds and am so happy to finally have my band.
  24. Don't be so hard on yourself ! Any pound gone is a good pound gone! No matter how fast or slow it goes ... We're all different ... we all lose differently and at different paces ... How boring would the world be if we were all the same?! And you said you're 21 days out? Well of course! The dreaded 3 week stall ! We all go through it .... As they say ... This too shall pass ... YOU will rock this! Be Blessed!!

    Having a hard time!!

Hi All! It's been a while since I've been on. I don't know if it was a feeling of thinking I could do it myself or what..but it's been 6 months since being banded and I've only lost 39lbs. Am I being too hard on myself? I still eat too fast and don't chew enough, and I pay the price. I only PB'd once but the other times it just hurts like hell til it passes. I don't know why I don't learn my lesson. I've gone down 2 sizes and 1 bra size so I know it working, I just feel bummed. The only meats I can eat without getting stuck is chop meat (like burgers) or filet mignon because it's so soft. I can eat fish too. But what else can I eat. I do lots of bean salads, eggs, but I'm just bored and I don't want to start eating junk food because it goes down easily. And I definitely don't drink enough water. Sorry if I'm talking your ears off. I need all the help I can get. Any ideas? Thank you for listening.
