  1. Hi all, I have had my band since 2003 and on October 3 I will be getting the revision to sleeve. I have heard weight loss is slower in revision patients than someone that was getting weight-loss surgery for the first time. Does anyone have experience with this and has it been accurate for you? I'm very short and I have about 50 pounds to lose. I maintained over 100 pound weight loss for all of those years. But I have been having band complications for many years now as well . Now the pounds are creeping back on.

    Tired Of The Games

Well goodness girl, now I'm worried about you. What's up with the heaving and the yellow stools? YELLOW? Ok I've tossed my proverbial cookies twice - eating too fast for sure and one of the two might have been related to fat content and I didn't realize it. Maybe something you ate made it yellow? You aren't doing things wrong ok? You are figuring this out and it's alot. It's not easy, believe me I'm right there with you (I spent the MONTH of March in the hospital - yes, I got pneumonia and then sprung a leak and had revision surgery done). Don't ask me how in hades I'm going to pay for all of this, since I was originally a self pay. Some days, I have panic attacks and cry - thinking I really eff'd up now. But then again, I am lighter and hopefully healthier... it's just not easy. I have to remind myself to focus on the positive. I encourage you to do that too ok? Although I can't imagine adding a new job in there. You are going thru alot of stuff. Ok one thing on the counseling - if you have EAP it might be free through that. I did it after my mom died and it was free for grief counseling for x amt of sessions. Something's better than nothing. I'd encourage you to call your EAP benefits hotline and ask them. It's confidential. Are there any support groups in your area? Real, walk in ones? Call the local hospital and ask if they have a bariatric consultant. Just someone medical that might be able to say 'hey you are doing fine.' (beyond this site, altho i love the site) I'm not sure what else to say but I'm worried about you. Alot of freak'n help that is, but .... just so you know, you are NOT alone. Come pee on my rainbow anytime. Prayers and hugs to you from me. xxoo and dang, sorry, that was very long
  3. I had a gastric sleeve revision on January 23, 2018. I have lost only 9 pound, which I lost the first week... nothing after that. I am afraid this won’t work for me again!
  4. Hi Miami. I haven't had a sleeve revision but my weight loss was slow and frustrating after vsg surgery on 12/28/17. After surgery, I lost 7 lbs, 2nd week - o, 3rd week - +1 lb. (really! lol), and then 9 lbs. 9lbs. In 1 week! I weigh every Monday. You will have more weight loss coming. It's just going to happen when it chooses to. Stick to your path to health and you'll eventually reach your goal. It will all be more than ok. [emoji471]

    BMI 50 or higher

I was banded today! And I had a BMI of 55 when I started my consult a BMI of 53 when I started pre op and up until today I've lost about 20lbs (not sure what BMI that gives me no less than 51 though. I was banded this morning & my only complication was my nausea to the anesthesia. Not even 24hrs later I feel much better! And I think like everyone said you know yourself and what your true needs are. If you know you're commited to the lifestyle changes the band requires go for it! Its a lot easier to revise from the band than it is to go from the other WLSs to the band. Most doctors like many ppl look at ppl with higher BMIs as those who have extremely bad habits & lack of self control/comittment to make the band work so ofcourse they'll recommend faster somewhat easier options but you shouldn't let that opinion sway you. As long as ur healthy enough to go be approved for surgery get what you really want & are comfortable with!

Any February Surgery Dates Out There?

Hi all! I had revision (VBG to rny) February 10th so I am 4 days out. Going back to work tomorrow. We'll see how that goes. Have not used any pain meds since I've been home but I have slept so much that I'm finding it hard to get all of my fluids in. I'm only allowed water, crystal light, Powerade zero and broths. I can add protein drinks next week. My dr said three weeks liquid then four weeks soups then start soft diet. I'm going on a cruise in April and hope to try soft foods before we go so I know what I can handle. These forums have been very informative and encouraging! Thanks!
  10. Count me in! I'm flying to San Diego on Tuesday with surgery scheduled for this Wednesday the 9th. I'm a band to sleeve revision (my band was removed in October). I was almost at goal when my band went kaplooey and I regained all of my weight while fighting the insurance denial. I'm just planning to let that go and be excited about returning to the wonderful world of restriction. Scared and excited both... Britt Anyone with new dates should copy this post and add their name to it..... For those who have had it already, I hope it all went well... for those of us soon to...I wish you all the best of luck, and may everyones recovery be smooth and without problems. 1 ? Pre-Op Diet and Surgery

I'm here to attest to the fact I was fearful all the way being wheeled into the OR. I've had many surgeries and as my doctor put it the scars I have look like the road map of Europe . Every time I have had surgery I have had that fear but came out of it fine everytime. I think it's normal to be a little anxious before any type of surgical procedure. My doctor requires an overnight stay for all his patients having Lapband surgery in case of any complications. If I was having the sleeve he would require a 3 day stay and 4 days for bypass surgery. He's pretty thorough. When I had my port revised because it flipped I was released early evening. I went in the OR at 7:30 was in recovery by 9 and released at 4 PM. I still had that fear going into the OR but was given an injectable sedative to relax before being operated on. Thank God everything turned out OK. Best wishes to you!

    Sleeve or band

I would not wish the crapband on anyone! 10 year survivor of that torture device. Never did well, beat my self esteem to the ground, and caused pain. I am at goal - lost 150# after revision to sleeve.

    Sleeve or band

I also considered the band but then avoided it like the plague after consulting more with my wife. She is a surgical RN on the bariatric team at the hospital where I had my surgery so I had very good insight into everything ahead of time. My wife said they do a lot of revisions or removals of the band because they are just not as effective, they shift, they have complications (not that the sleeve can't have complications), etc... In fact, the bariatric center where I had my surgery shys away from the band because of those very reasons. They primarily shoot for the sleeve for lower BIM patients or patients who need to loose extra before getting the bypass, or for they do the bypass right away. Both are permanent changes with no foreign object being put inside your body!

Any February Surgery Dates Out There?

Hang in there it does get better! My surgery was two day before yours and Monday at work for me was a killer and I sit all day. It is better now. Taking short walk breaks of 4-5 min few times a day. I am worried about getting all the fluid in but we can do it! I understand your exhaustion completely just hang in there and try to move as much as possible. I only lost 6 lbs first week which was disappointing considering taking in zero calories and my dr told me yesterday that revisions loose slower sometimes. We can do this! Don't be discouraged!
  16. Well, after much discussion and worry with my surgeon I am having a lap band port revision. I am happy with this even though it will be on November 19th - only 5 months after my original surgery- you see, my port bonks against my ribs causing me considerable pain. So, we have the day and the insurance will pay - thank god. I will be out from the 19th of November until the Friday after Thanksgiving and then of course I will have that weekend as well. I am finally at a point with only 2 fills where I have great restriction and am finally losing weight, I will be all set after this surgery is competed. Wish me luck and feel free to tell me about your port revision :smile2:
  17. I loved my band, and had it for 18 months before I had to have it removed due to 40% erosion. I'll be sleeved on 8/14. If I had to do it all over again, I would have been sleeved first, but back in 2003 that procedure didn't have as much visibility. I initially chose the band because it was "less invasive" and reversable. When the time came to remove it I *knew* I would regain the 103lbs I'd lost with it, and I did and then some. I don't want the sleeve to be reversable! As far as "less invasive" - my band ended up being three surgeries - install, port revision, removal, endoscopy, and four fills under fluoro which involved very long needles inserted into the port through the abdomen (which surprising weren't really painful, but still, they were "invasive"). So although I felt I was very successful with the band and felt that it did exactly what I expected it to do, in the end it was all for naught because of erosion. I can't even imagine having the daily problems some report whose band journeys have been one great big struggle. My sleeve cannot come soon enough!
  18. It sounds like you may have a stricture in your sleeve (makes it hour glass shaped) - did he mention anything like that, as that would show in the barium swallow test? The drugs that you are taking wouldn't help that as they are just to treat the acid overproduction (the pantoprazole and Dexilant) and the resulting insult to the tissue (the sucrafate). From what I have seen over the years (not an MD, just an interested bystander) the problems with the esophagus are likely a result of the stomach problem (assuming that it is a stricture - I have seen such things sited as a result of lap band damage resulting in such symptoms) Strictures of such severity (if indeed that is what it is) were more common several years ago when the sleeve was new and most US bariatric surgeons were just learning how to do them. The stomach, when sleeved, tends to like to bend or twist in the middle if you don't do it just right - it takes practice. These days, I see it discussed more commonly in countries, like Canada and Australia, that were slower to adopt the sleeve, so as a result, their surgeons, as a group, are at about the same place in the learning curve as the US surgeons were 6-10 years ago. Usually, it is treated by a bypass revision as the surgeon won't know how to repair it (if it can be done.) Often, it can be repaired, or resleeved, to correct the problem, But that needs a surgeon who is much more experienced with the sleeve, so if it is possible in your system to get a second opinion on it (particularly from someone more sleeve savvy) that would be the way to go, if for no other reason than to get concurrence with your surgeon's solution (or hopefully, an alternative approach.) Ideally, you would like to find someone who is experienced with the duodenal switch WLS, as that uses the sleeve as its' basis and those surgeons tend to be much more experienced with them than the average bariatric surgeon, but they tend to be few and far between. The only one that I know of in CA is Michel Gagner, who IIRC works out of Montreal. Likely, the RNY revision is the standard of care within the Canadian system (and much of the US as well,) for this type of problem/ Good luck,
  19. I had my band for 4 years. Never found a sweet spot, had fills then extreme pain, then it was back for unfill the next day, and only lost 32 the whole 4 years! Then my dr. quit and moved away. I was forced to find another Dr. That was the best thing to ever happen to me. The new Dr. found out during my first fill that my band was leaking and possibly eroding into my stomach. After having a scope on my tummy one day, He did the removal of the band and revision to the sleeve, the next day. In that process the Dr found my band wasn't even buckled. I had the surgery on a Wednesday, and went home on Thursday. I have had no problems what so ever. I have lost 32 lbs since my surgery 3 months ago. I love love love my sleeve. I go for my 3 month check up tomorrow. Thats my story..... Jeri

Did anyone like the band better?

I was also banded in 2011 and having revision. I was told reversible, but permanent. I despise my band...can't wait toget it out. My port has flipped and Dr. unable to access it. It feels like an orange is right under my skin (where the port is)and Dr. thinks it sticks out like a tumor because of how it's sitting on my abdominal muscle. It's gross and embarrassing. I'm so ready to move to the sleeve and start this new chapter in my life. My clinic discourages the band now and Dr. states they haven't seen the success as they once hoped.
  21. Yes absolutely !! I had great success with the band and I have struggled everyday since having it removed. Today I actually weigh 10lbs more than when I revised. I feel like I don't even have a "sleeve."

    Moving on to Solids!

I had a lap band to sleeve revision on April 16. I started eating solid food at 14 days. I started with salmon and green Beans. Then had mahi mahi with some slaw mix. I have had no problems as of yet. I have had chicken, tuna, turkey. Have not had ground beef yet, but going to try that this weekend. For Breakfast scrambled egg with sautéed veggies (zucchini, onion, mushrooms - cooked well), grits, steel cut oats, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries … the raspberries did create some acid for me … and strawberries today so we will see. I think my stomach healed much faster than most because I used Bone broth in my liquid diet. Bone Broth has 9 grams of Protein in each 8 oz. serving and the purpose of bone broth is to heal the gut (if you have gut issues) … so since I mostly eat a Paleo diet 85/15 … I cook and use that a lot and I really think my stomach was fine at 10 day! I have lost 13 lbs. in 3 weeks and I am ok with that! All I can say is that I can eat again. I had so much trouble with the lap band that I threw up almost everything I ate! It was depressing. How I can eat healthy again! Also … looking forward to my first salad … maybe this weekend!

    Life is GREAAAT!

Love reading your posts…what an inspiration! I chuckled at your first NSV…i just posted on another thread…how amazed I am that I can now see the seat under me and so much of it too! And like you, the steering wheel would rub my belly and now I had to lower my steering wheel…guess theres not as much butt and back "lifting" me in my seat now! Im also looking forward to summer with my kids…last year I avoided the pool all summer because I didn't want to get in a suit…now Im okay with my new suit in a smaller size! Just did some clothes and shoe shopping on sunday….so happy with my 12/14 pants….14/16 shirts and even my shoes shrunk a little in width! And like you I am feeling like this is just where I am supposed to be right now in my life…and yes….LIFE IS GREAT! Was having a "rut" with my eating and food choices and realized that only I can get myself back to where I was with my revised and better eating habits. I love so much of the new me that the cookie or bag of m&m's really isn't worth it…but it is so DARN TEMPTING…and the head hunger is just killing me…but I'm just gonna take one day at a time….AND BEAT IT! Thanks for posting your successes and your tips….love them! You look amazing!
