    Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery

Dated information. The MGB is a different operation from the old Morris loop operation, which WAS not a great wls and is rarely performed today. The MGB was developed by Dr. Rutledge and is a fast, laproscopic op performed by a few docs in the USA but many docs in Europe and abroad. It has great results and little regain. The op is reversible and Revisable if necessary. After some 8 years of research, I am choosing this operation.
  2. Hey! I'm doing really well. Thank you for checking in on me! As of this morning, the scale showed 197.9. That's a total loss of 60 lbs. I'm in awe at my progress but so so grateful to be where I am so far! I hope everything goes well for you and UHC covers thst revision. I've heard/read such horrendous experiences with the band and feel horrible for anyone stuck with it and the complications they have to endure. Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App
  3. Thank you so much for responding! I feel better already. If you don't mind me asking, were your complications similar to mine, throwing up all the time? What was it that finally changed their mind? Although I'm not doing this purely for the purpose of losing weight (symptom alleviation is first for me), did you find it was easy to lose weight once you had it revised? Are the side effects of the RNY better to deal with? It sounds like the VBG was a disaster for lots of people, and I'll bet many of them just suffer in silence. I'm glad to find someone who can relate. Looking forward to hearing from you!
  4. I had VBG 20 yrs ago and dealt with it till last month when I was revised to RNY. Best thing I have done and wish I had found a Dr years ago to do this. My insurance initially hesitated wanting 6 month pre diet, but with all my complications, and Dr explaining this was the only option, they waived it. Let me know if I can provide any more info. 5. Hello All, 16 years ago at the tender age of 19, I had the, now disgraced, Vertical Banded Gastroplasty procedure. Although I lost weight, I started throwing up 3-5 days a week for hours on end within two months of the surgery and have been that way ever since. 16 years later, I have all fake teeth (natural teeth can't stand that level of acid), am on huge doses of Nexium, and have serious esophageal problems, which could lead to cancer in the future. Also, it is REALLY terrible to throw up that often, and it really effects my quality of life. I also didn't maintain the weight loss, although I have been on Weight Watchers for a few months now, and have lost 45 pounds the old fashioned way. I got to the point where this started to make me mad! They say that often change doesn't happen until to actually get MAD! My parents and I started doing research and found out that the VBG can be revised into the gastric bypass. Does anyone have experience with this, especially with the insurance end? It took me 16 years to stop blaming myself and be willing to take action. Any help, hope, or encouragement would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Chelsea
  6. @@bdejong - That is going to the heart of several issues. The biggest problem I always had in these situations is my feelings got hurt and I didn't do a great job of hearing what her feelings were or making sure she was properly understood. I learned a great deal about how women think with this book: https://www.gottman.com/shop/the-mans-guide-to-women/ Gottman also has some great resources for couples on how to improve communications: https://www.gottman.com/shop/7-principles-for-making-marriage-work-revised-book/ If you notice the ladies are all saying...talk and LISTEN to her. (Hint, hint)
  7. There's actually an entire section of the forum dedicated to those who have gone from band-to-sleeve. You can see it here -- http://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/394-band-to-gastric-sleeve-revisions/

    May bypass group!

Glad your revision from VBG seems to be going well. I could not be happier with how mine went. The only thing I see is it seems too easy to eat. I am still on pureed, but some foods that allow that allow 8 oz. at a time for the meal requirements, I do not feel full. I do not take more to manage calorie and Protein needs for each meal and day. I am sure when I get to regular foods that will change, so enjoying the healing now.

    Calling all June '16 sleevers!

Hey June friends!!! I had my revision surgery on Friday and am doing well. This morning I wasn't able to get more than a sip of water down, but this evening I am able to drink a tiny bit more and it took me 3 hours to eat (drink) a SF JELLO. I am not going to weight myself for a while due to swelling and healing. So happy I am done and on the mend. Hubby said it may be time to wash my hair. So that will be my first big task in the morning. The liquid hydrocodone works very quickly and puts me to sleep in about 15 minutes. I also use a heating pad on low and that helps a ton. Seems to being textbook for me. Good luck to everyone. I will keep you posted. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  12. Anyone had surgery with Dr. Urrego at Peachtree Bariatrics? Any feedback you can share? I have just started my 3 month supervised diet and hope to have surgery by 10/16. I am revising from band to bypass. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Band to sleeve surgery

This is my EXACT story, well minus having the baby part. I too was banded in 2005. I was 280 lbs, lost 70 lbs, didn't keep it off for very long and am now back up to 288. I have had HORRIBLE HORRIBLE reflux, able to eat anything, and am so frustrated!! I have been 3 times to talk to my surgeon about a revision to the sleeve & each time he tells me I need to get an EGD & then I just never go back. I've been looking into revision now since 2013. My insurance covers bariatric surgery but not sure if that includes revisions. I am going to call my surgeon again on Monday & make another appointment. Unfortunately I am in graduate school right now, in addition to working full time, so I don't really have a lot of down time available, so I'm not really sure how this surgery would fit into my life. At this point though I have GOT to do something. I can't continue on this way. My BP is out of control, I'm pretty sure if I'm not diabetic by now I am RIGHT on the edge & this reflux is the worst. I am so happy to hear that you are loving the revision. If I get it done I definitely only want to have it done in one surgery. I can't even imagine the weight I would gain with NO restriction...Anyway, thanks for your post & keep us update about your progress! Candi

    My Hair is falling :(

Hi Mozza, yes it's inevitable. Weight loss leads to hair loss in most people, but not all. I had the sleeve 2 1/2 years ago and at about 4 months out I started losing hair by the handfull. I was quite upset but knew it was coming. I just cut my hair shorter so it wasn't as noticeable. Once I started adding more fat to my diet the hair grew back and thickened up. It's just a temporary problem and you will soon be over it. I promise, the weight loss is worth the hair loss. I will be having a revision to bypass in a couple of months and I will go through this again and though I dread it, I know it is a temporary thing and well worth the problem.May I ask why you are having a revision to bypass? I am pre op and still deciding between bypass and sleeve. Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App Yes, pls share, audaciousmarie? Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

My lap 7-year lap band journey!

I had a lap band for over 7 years. I was one of those people that followed all of the rules with my band. I chose a great doctor and had great success with the band. I made tons of friends, well over a hundred, that also had the band. I sit here today honestly amazed that they still perform this surgery in the United States. For every one person I know that I can say is happy they still have their lap band I can think of 20 that regret the decision. I was enamored with my band and it took me a long time to realize how much of a flawed surgery it really is and how it's such a temporary solution that's nearly guaranteed to fail in the long run. I still believe in weight loss surgery. In fact, I just had a revision over to the sleeve. The heartburn and acid reflux along with always trying to find the elusive 'green zone' became too much and I was unwilling to let my band do any more damage to my body. I don't write this post to discourage, but to encourage people to really dig into the posts on this site. Understand that I have been on this site and others like it for almost 10 years and I can absolutely say without a doubt in my mind that the lap band is not a good surgery. If you don't believe me then just look through the posts on this site that have been here for years where people are in pain and have lost not just one, but sometimes multiple bands. Obviously, we are all adults and if you still choose to get a lap band or if you are someone that has gotten and band and has been successful then that is fine and I have no ill words for you. Just realize that those that get banded and keep their band for over 5 years successfully are extremely rare and they should count their lucky stars. I leave this here as a testament to my lap band journey. I started it at 325lbs, lost 127lbs, then regained 102lbs back after having to have my Fluid removed. I tried to love my band, I really did. It's just really damn hard to succeed at something you are set up to fail at from the very beginning. **EDIT** Please forgive the title and any spelling/grammar mistakes as I blame them on my current pain medication!
  17. I had the lapband from 2011 to 2013. Now having gastric bypass on June16th. My band is already out but the dr is still calling it a revision. I have started my preop diet. On week two but this week is only 3 shakes a day and liquids. I'm 5 days away from surgery! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    What to bring to hospital?

I ended up being in the hospital for 3 nights and 4 days due to some complications but I didn't care what I was wearing. I put my robe on over the hospital gown so I could walk the halls. I brought some lip balm because my lips got very dry. A notebook and pen for writing down notes and information given by medical staff. Due to the meds you may forget a lot of it so its better to write it all down. Your cell phone or Ipad will be great company, and maybe a magazine. Other than that you really don't need much more than your toothbrush and toothpaste, brush, and some lotion for your body. You will be dry from drinking so little. I brought too much stuff to the hospital last time but when I have my revision at the end of the summer I will travel a lot lighter. lol

Still mourning the loss of my band

Thank you thank you thank you. Just what I needed to read. I just keep reading everyone having revisions; it is scary. Great job maintaining and getting healthy. You are very motivating to me.
  22. I found a really nice website called Sugerysquad.com that shows an interactive surgery that you can assist in. You can really learn a lot about the surgery and it should allieve some of your fears . I had the sleeve 2 1/2 years and Im having to do a revision to the bypass in the next couple of months. I was really scared but once I played the interactive surgery game, I felt a lot more comfortable. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
  23. I was banded in 2010 and had no issues for the first year or so. I lost about 30 lbs. In November of 2012 I started having issues. I'd go get a fill and be back in to get a deflate within a week. They would tell me that my band had slipped and to go on a liquid diet. I would do that and go back in and it would be fine. This happened at least 2 more times before they told me that I had a hiatal hernia. (apparently that was the issue all along) When they did my original surgery they fixed a hiatal hernia. In March of 2013 I had the surgery to repair the hernia again. They deflated my band and it was like starting all over. While I didn't have any issues with the band slipping, I have not lost any weight in the 3 years since. The only real issues I have had are I don't seem to have much restriction and I have the night cough with reflux. I went in every month ($150 a pop) and got fills and I literally have gained and lost the same 10 pounds. My original surgeon never said a word about this. I asked and they said I needed to watch what I was eating. I was doing all that and exercising. This past April I decided to switch doctors. He said that he does the band to sleeve revision all the time and that most of his patients have gone with the sleeve. He seems positive that I can have it done in one surgery, which is scheduled for June 22. Hopefully this is the case and I can start my weight loss journey again... I have a few questions..... Who used a belly brace right after surgery, which brand did you use, and where did you get it? What are your thoughts on the Vitamins Patches? I hate taking all those pills and a patch looks like a good alternative. Oh and for anyone who has had a band to sleeve revision.... did you have to be scoped the day before your surgery? Thanks!!

    Low BMI Gastric Sleeve story

I was insurance approved with a BMI of 35.5 and I had a revision from lap-band to sleeve last monday. Before the surgery my doctor came to the pre-surgery room to look at my stats. The day of the surgery, my BMI was 34 so he just made a funny comment like "you are not that big, are you?, winkwink" so I just smiled at him praying that he would go ahead with the surgery. I have several weight-related commorbities and I'm sure low-bmi patients will benefit from this surgery as much as other higher BMI patients. Health comes in different shapes and forms. I totally feel we should be part of a medical study group or something! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
