  1. I'm a college teacher. Had surgery on Tuesday taught 90 mins following Monday and four hours Wednesday. I was off from my full time teaching job. I was very tired. My students were understanding. If you have desk job I think week could be ok. Good luck! I revised from band to bypass. Sent from my XT1254 using the BariatricPal App

  4. Hello all, I had my lap band placed back in march of 2007 when it was all the rage and no proven long term research. I went to surgery at 283, and managed to drop to an all time low of 220 within 10 months. I spent the next 9 years battling with this lapband and all the CRAP that came with it. I remember feeling like I had hit rock bottom when I couldnt even swallow my own saliva, but was slowly seeing the scale creep up. Today I am right back to 274, which is NOT my highest post surgery weight. (I would have never guessed that 9 years ago) Any how about a year ago, June 2015, I decided something had to give and started seeing a new Dr. about my options. I honestly hadnt see one in years. I had just learned to live with the GERD, upset stomach, inability to eat healthy foods, sleeping sitting up, etc.. I have seen this Dr and his team monthly since June of last year. I have been doing all of the things required by my insurance to meet the criteria for a revision. When I went to see my surgeon 3 weeks ago, he said we need to go ahead and get the band out asap, since it has been causing me problems. I said GREAT to that and we scheduled my removal date for 7/29/16. woo hoo!! So then I ask him what about the bypass surgery. He says that will be treated as a completely separate case, and that I was technically on visit #5 of my bcbs required 6 month diet. (the office didn't start to count the visits as diet visits till Jan 2016) not sure why, but okay. His attitude seems to be "Lets get the band out first, and fight with the insurance company later about the revision to rny" Has anyone else had this type of experience? Im wondering if hes hoping to find something during the surgery, that would lean in favor of the insurance company approving me for a revision. It just seems a little round about... Thanks everyone for your input

    Band to sleeve surgery

I can tell you they do not like to do the band removal and the sleeve at the same time. I was fortunate because I know my surgeon personally and he knows I will run to him or call him if there are any issues. He told me before my surgery that he would do it only if it was safe to do it once he got in there. He explained that about 5% of the cases they can't do it at the same time. My advice is to possibly see if there is another surgeon that will try to do them at the same time. The other thing is that you all are not wanting to do the EGD - well, that's what provided me with the ammunition I needed for my insurance to cover the revision surgery. As long as you have something to support the need to have it done, in addition to your weight gain then you'll probably be able to get it approved. The doctors know what they need to do to get the procedure approved. The one thing I will tell you is the sleeve is very different. Be prepared to be super tired and weak for a week or more.. it may not be the same with you. I'm used to being able to bounce back fast. I haven't had real pain, the drain was a pain and it was in for 12 days.. and that made it a little difficult to do much. But.. it's not bad.
  7. @@fayeu One of my concerns is health problems - just getting older type issues - after GB. You had strokes post bypass...did it affect anything in your recovery? Anyone else have GB as they work through other health issues? I was 2 weeks away from Lap Band to Bypass revision last summer and changed my mind. Now I'm thinking about it again...
  8. Bariatric Complete Capsule Once a Day Multi-Vitamin - Formulated for: Roux-en-Y, Vertical Sleeve, Duodenal Switch 90 Day Supply I've had these for 6 months and just started taking them after my 6 month checkup. They also have a one a day chewable that looked to be the size of a dime on their website. They were out of stock for over 6 months. Apparently they were revising the chewables. They're now the size of a horsepill and taste horrible. http://procarenow.com/Bariatric-Complete-Capsule-Once-a-Day-Multi-Vitamin--Formulated-for-Roux-en-Y-Vertical-Sleeve-Duodenal-Switch-90-Day-Supply_p_10568.html
  9. I had the sleeve 2 1/2 years ago and returned to work a week after surgery. I am having a revision to Gastric Bypass in September or October and I was wondering how long I would be off from work. Was anybody able to go back to work after a week or did it take longer? I'm a bit OCD and like to plan things out in advance but I have no idea what to expect this time around.
  10. Thank you for your posts. I had a slippage and problems with the band so Insurance will cover Gastric Sleeve revision to be done the end of Aug. first of Sept. but I had so many issues with my band both I and my husband are nervous. I had re-flux for so long especially at night even with just water, and I definitely don't want to go back to that. You have given me hope that it will be a good fix.
  11. Under the right care, with the right education and with an ethical doctor I could see this being beneficial. But some quack could open a clinic in LA and advertise this device to hungry women with a little pudge promising a thin, taut body while being able to eat as much cake and ice cream as they'd like. I guess you could argue the same thing for bariatric surgery, but there's just something that seems off about this type of procedure. To me, it's the moral wrongness of consuming more food than you need to purge it later. Certainly, I'm guilty myself of eating more food than I need which is why I got fat in the first place. But I had the sense to feel terrible about it later just because I felt like I was feeding my hedonistic pleasure centers rather than nourishing my body (partially why I sought a restrictive procedure in the first place). I still don't understand how this would effect long-term change as well. If I had to take my lap band out I'd do a revision at the same time because I know if I don't have my band I will go back to my old ways. This seems similar to the balloon in that sense (though the balloon doesn't cause food waste). I'm not sold on it but I could see its applications being beneficial in certain cases. I just worry about abuse because even though there are safeguards in place, I'm sure someone out there could tamper with it and turn it into an efficient bulimia device, market it to people who shouldn't have it, and make a bunch of money.

    PPI's forever?

I stopped taking them after 6 months with no ill effects. Based on what I have read about long term PPI use, if I developed severe GERD I would revise to bypass before I would commit to using PPI's for the rest of my life.
  13. I go 6/30 for revision - he plans on taking band out and converting to sleeve all in one operation. So I hope I wake up with my sleeve - had my band 9 yrs
  14. @@LadyMaggie That is exactly what happens if the surgeon doesn't deal with it the first time... the slip gets worse and worse until its too late and nothing can be done except removing it. This is why i keep pushing @@c945105 to ignore the surgeon and ask for an unfill... since its a new small slip... a unfill should resolve it... but if it is left with that much fill in the band... it will completely slip and might need to be removed . Have you had a revision since your removal?
  15. I had heard about Dr Duncan doing the revisions, so I was looking for any experiences with the other Doctors. I was confident when I met him about his abilities, and was very happy that they attempt to do the band removal and GB in one surgery. Congrats and best of luck! I finish my 3 diet supervised visits beginning of Sept and hope to get scheduled soon after that for surgery. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  16. 5 days post op. Very happy with my recovery. Because I am a teacher and am off for the summer, I am able to really rest and take my time. starting Weight-245 5 days post op CW-233 I am a revision patient and had to have additional scar tissue removed from my spleen, diaphragm and stomach. My lapband had been causing extreme pain for 2 years with minimal losses. I feel immediate restriction and love my surgeon. Friday I get to start full liquids and am looking forward to that. We are clearly on the right track. Have an amazing week!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  17. I am a month post op. I am a revision from sleeve to RNY. The first week I lost 18 pounds. Absolutely nothing since. I have actually gained 2 pounds of that back with no reason to. I am now on regular foods and do everything I can to get Protein in with foods. I cannot drink the shakes because they make me sick. I have given up everything as I needed to. I eat chicken, fish, Beans, Greek yogurt, turkey, vegetables and little fruits. I drink Water only. I feel like this has failed me. I feel like I am doing everything I am supposed to. This is a true 3 week stall after only being a month out. I have measured and my measurements haven't changed during this time either. With a 2 pound gain. Help!!! Band or Sleeve? So confused :(

That was the longest appointment ever lol feeling very happy! Have decided on the band, doctor said being young and other then my weight in very healthy he is reluctant to do a sleeve due to its permanence he said 80% of his patients who get the band have great success and that he thinks it's the best option for me in fact he said he wouldn't recommend the sleeve for me at all, he said in some cases 5 or so years down the line if the weight loss isn't where we want we can look at revision to a sleeve but he wants to leave that as a last resort Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. I'll be going in for a one stage revision, and am worried that it'll become a two stage. Are there any people who has had the band for many years? I've had my band for 8 years with good success ~100 lbs with little or no problems and maintained that weight loss but doctor suggested I get a revision to gastric sleeve since I've remained the same now for the last 3 years. I have about 70 more lbs to go. Thanks.
  20. I am wondering if anyone in the group has had a revision after a RNY? I had an RNY in the late 1990s and am looking into a revision and would like to talk with someone about their experiences. Thanks Sarah

Why do some folks try to ruin this forum?

@@jintycb I have no idea what you are sayin'... but I think I agree! @@kmorri Don't apologize for posting this, and I appreciate your recent observations. My main point isn't that we are perfect because we have more "years" but rather - can't we give each other the benefit of the doubt? Like the person who reemed me for posting about dating on the singles forum. Ya, I get that you can't tell what forum you are in from your phone, but rather than lecturing, how about assuming that I am NOT an idiot until proven otherwise? I totally get how emotional this whole "life changing" business is, and I do genuinely try to cut people some slack, let stuff roll off, I just ask for a little of that in return toward us "vets". There is a reason you see few people more than a year or two out - get sick of being lambasted. I am just trying to make it to my 5 years (band to sleeve revision) in December of this year. The reason I hang out here is that a few people on this very forum influenced me to have the surgery that saved my life, helped me lose half my body weight, which led to the wonderful life i have now. I hope that I can have that impact on just one person. Also, I still need support too!
  22. Anyone know of UHC's policy on revision surgery in Florida? I was banded in 2008, self pay. Starting weight 226lbs, lowest weight 162lbs. I felt great. In 2012 I had a baby and throughout the pregnancy did very well. Never had any issues whatsoever, didn't even get an adjustment the entire pregnancy. When I gave birth everything changed, suddenly my and was too tight. I paid to have an adjustment made to get some relief. In 2013 I paid for another adjustment to now begin the process of getting myself back to pre-pregnancy band level of 5.75 cc's. Struggled for years and in Feb of 2016 ended up in the hospital because my doctor couldn't take me in for an emergency adjustment. He reduced my band to 4cc's and I still have yet to live normally. At this point I'm vomiting at least 4 times a week, suffer from eating anxiety because I'm always thinking about how this meal or that meal might get stuck. Have been exercising until recently about 3-4 days a week and can't get my weight in check. It just fluctuates constantly which is extremely frustrating and almost depressing. I am so afraid of going back to my 226lbs. At this point I'm 191.5lbs and I do not want to see this number as it is. If anyone can offer words of encouragement or advice regarding my lapband (8 years old) and advice about revision surgery (I can't live with this lapband changing on a moments notice, stress, etc) united healthcare covering revision surgery in Florida, they've already said to me by e-mail that isn't a covered procedure but I know there are ways to get this approved. Please help.

    Surgery scares!

I have a person at work that her husband had RNY and has had a lot of complications over the last 3 years. Talking with her, I learned he did not follow hardly any directions from Dr. post surgery. Not enough protein, eating solids too early, and not taking any vitamins. He will not even talk to Dr. about his complications, or go to support groups. I really agree that following the process properly and getting Dr involved with any issues early is the way to go. I had Revision from VBG, and it was more complicated than regular RNY, but I could not be happier, and the person at work is feeling better about WLS for herself now seeing her husbands problems is isolated and not a general issue.

    June Sleevers!

Lap-band to sleeve revision on June 23 for me! I start my full liquid diet tomorrow. Looks like it's going to be harder than when I did it for my lap-band! No Soup this time. Protein shakes, broth, sugar free Jello... Good luck to everyone!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
