  1. A New New Dawn

    6 Months Of Weight In

Actually, it is usually the opposite. They want to see you lose weight to show you are committed and can stick to a diet afterwards. I would follow the diet from your surgeon/nutritionist as they know what they are doing and who you should trust. Best of luck to you!

    Banded in London 20th June

Hi I went with Healthier weight as they were recommended to me by my friend who is a dietician. I am now 2 weeks postop and doing really well. Lost 5kg already just another 20 or so to go. Who are you with? SG
  3. My name is Lisa, I am 29 and from Maryland. I have battled my weight my whole life, but especially struggled in the last 12 years. My highest weight ever was 270 lbs, but I am currently 250 lbs at 5'10". In muy early 20's I was able to get down to 180lbs, but in a very unhealthy manner, using diet pills and horrible eating habits. In the past 8 years I have yo-yo'd my way to my highest weight last year, then went to a physician assisted weight loss with phentermine last year and got down to 235. That only worked for a few months, though I took it for a full year. I have since developed high blood pressure and my doc advised me to stop taking the phentermine if I stopped losing weight. I have a friend who got the sleeve last year, it was the first I had heard of it. I had heard of gastric bypass and the lap band and knew people who had had those procedures. Neither seem appealing to me. The bypass seems way to invasive and the lap band I know someone who had repeated complications and dumping syndrome. I have though about it somewhat secretly for a year, and have recently started really discussing it with my husband and doing heavy research with my insurance and with my work. One big concern is the lifting restrictions I work in health care and there really is no form of "light duty" in my line of work, but luckily I have short term disability. I also keep having second thoughts about not being to eat what I want for the rest of my life, but then I think that just shows my addiction that I am scared to not be able to eat crappy food. My husband has said he will support my decision, but I also don't know what I want to tell others. I almost feel embarrassed to tell friends and coworkers, like I failed all other weight loss pathways. I have never felt that way myself toward others who have there surgery, because it really is a big commitment to weight loss and healthy eating. But there is still a part of me that wishes I could handle it without surgery, but my history shows that I can't. So I guess my main questions to those who have had VSG are: 1- Have you had and major complications from the surgery? 2- How long were you on restrictions from lifting? 3- How long were you in the hospital after surgery? 4- What did you tell friends and coworkers? 5- Do you have any regrets about having the surgery? Thanks for any support you can lend to me! :-)

    I Am Hungry!

These past two days I have been feeling hungry!!! Must remember to get cucumbers the week before my period! I basically ate two dinners tonight! I also need the sugar free popsicles! 7 days of eating like this and I could totally see some weight gain. Today I probably ate 2000 calories easy! I Only had high calorie foods! What low calorie foods pack a good punch in terms of volume?

    Gaining weight after 2 weeks!

Girl yes, im 1 month post opt and gained 1lb plus it has stayed the same for at least a week, idk whats going on because, i literally dnt each much but like 2 bites. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  8. Sleeved on 10/26/15, so I'm 6 months out already. Can't believe how time flies! Had my 6 mo. check up last week: weight 217.8 (down 55.5 pounds from surgery weight; down 62.2 from highest weight) A1C is 5.5 (down from 5.9 pre-op) pants size from a snug 24 to 18 tops size 2X to XL Only regret is that I didn't do this 10 years ago~!
  9. Hello all! I am curious about the 6 mo diet, I have my weigh in tomorrow morning for my 5th month. I am concerned that I will have gained a pound or two. My start weight was 274 and currently I am at 264. My weigh in last month was 262. Has anyone been declined due to weight gain like this?? I have not planned on it, but should i try laxatives to get those two pounds off? I would DIE if i got declined for a stupid 2 lbs weight gain. Any information about The 6 Mo supervised diet would be greatly appreciated!
  10. After 35 years of battling weight I finally have an appointment with a surgeon on Thursday. I am more relived than excited at this stage. I am not 100% sure what to expect however you guys have given me a fair idea.
  11. My best friend was not very supportive at the beginning. She thought I should just be able to eat small amounts on my own and loose the weight. She is thin and controls her weight. She is finally coming around, and acutally went with me today to get my 2nd fill. Good luck.
  12. I'm happy to report that mine still hurts but is much more tolerable. I can get up and down with ease now. I am healing well but not losing any weight. How can that be possible?! I'm still on liquids and have added cream o' soup and a tiny bit of cream of wheat. Crazy...
  13. I am interested in having my resting metabolic rate tested to get a better sense of where my calories should be, and I found a place near me that does the testing ($99; they also do DEXA scans for $129). My question is about timing. I'm only 18 days post-op -- would it make more sense to test when I am closer to my goal (whatever that is) because it may change significantly as I lose weight? Would appreciate anyone's opinion and information about this!
  14. I personally don't think malabsorption procedures are appropriate for people who are not going to be compliant with supplements - even if they might "need" the dumping to keep them straight. Someone who won't take their supplements, despite the obvious signs of malnutrition, probably won't be deterred by dumping. They'll find a way to work around it - like only eating ice cream in a comfortable setting so they can run straight to the bathroom. I think your mother-in-law and others like her would be better candidates for the VSG, plication, or (yikes!) even the band. Better for her to stall out with weight loss from overeating than to be totally malnurished.

You said it Shelly! I agree and both you an scarlet are right people can get weird about how one loses weight. I mean who gives a damn how you do it?! Just do it for health sake. I think some people would rather stay beating themselves up because they keep failing the next diet plan. Me personally I don't have that kind of fight in me anymore. I just want to feel better when I walk. I'd like to take up jogging if at all possible. I think we do sometimes lose some friends when change happens. I chalk it up as seasonal changes... Michelle that is so awesome your dad is taking this journey with you wow what a gift to be able to share that. I miss my mum so much wish we would've tried this when' she was still here. As for your questions, no sorry I don't know anything about any of that.

  17. Hey everyone! I'm new here. I've finished my 6 months of weight management. My chart was sent off for clearance.. so I'm only waiting on my surgery date. I'm excited and nervous eat the same time. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  18. i was told I had to do a 12 month weigh documentation with my family doctor and lose a total of 10lbs, this info came from surgeons office stating that this is what my insurance requires, I have McLaren Medicaid. so I do the 12 months in a row I lost a few lbs gained a few lbs thru the 12 months so sept 26th 2014 my doc turns in my documentation well he forwards it to the surgeons office and they send it to insurance, well nothing has been sent in the lady at the surgeons office is rude telling me I have to lose 10 lbs or ill be denied andto continue going to drs each month till I lose 10lbs then she will send to insurance cuz as of now she said ill get denied so ok im going to do that but then I call my insurance and I only had to do 6 months of documentation but had to lose weight each month well I didn't so now I have to do 6 months all over again to possibly get approved. can anyone tell me the right answer please I need help

As I have said, I am scheduled for surgery (sleeve) on September 9th. I am excited, yet scared. I keep reading things that frighten me, hair loss, vomiting, infections, torn stitches etc. The one that really has me concerned right now is skin, skin, skin......I want to dip myself in a vat of olive oil until my surgery. I'm no spring chicken (57), but I love to be active especially swimming. I have no interest in becoming a size 4, I would settle for a 16. At 330 this is a LOT of weight to lose. Maybe I should aim for an 18 and then adjust. I hear some people drop the pounds super fast and others not so much. I am on a mission to become a healthy me.
  20. Miss Pearlie is a hot mess I tell you. My personal goal was 150, but nooooooo that wasn't HER goal and as we all know, what Miss Pearlie wants, Miss Pearlie gets. So I've quit freaking out about it and I'm just letting her do her. I'm eating just fine, drinking just fine and maintaining my normal activity level and the weight keeps coming off. Fortunately enough, it has slowed to about a pound a week which is allowing my skin to catch up with it a bit more quickly. My mother and some of my friends were freaking out because after a substantial loss, my skin sags, I look tired and aged. That has tapered off and I am now looking younger than I did before the band...which was already really remarkable. There was a time that I wanted to get a slight unfill to bring the loss to a complete stop, but after getting advice from experienced bandsters that I trust I just allowed my body to do what it would, trusting that it would stop losing when it wanted to. I am a lot less stressed out as a result and accepting each day and each new surprise as it comes. It is so weird to look at a pair of pants and say "there is no way I'm getting in those"... hold them up to me and still say "nuh, un...not gonna work", then try them on and they are a perfect fit. I have to just sit back and say "no way, I'm really THAT small?" It is shocking and I thought I was over the body dysmorphia, but I'm not quite there yet. I still see myself as chunky...everyone else sees me as skinny. At 138, I'm still way more solid than my body appears and most people think I'm around 120 / 125 at the most. I love being "little". I don't realize how little I am until someone who I thought was an average weight hugs me and they are wrapped around me. Woooooow! Anyway, I'm thrilled that this first year has been so good for me and Miss Pearlie, I'm glad I chose to get the band rather than the sleeve. It turns out it was the right procedure for me and it hasn't given me any complications, even through a horrible stomach virus which caused me to vomit from below the band several times...she's still sitting pretty and perfect. I thank God for my surgeon, I know a lot of my success can be attributed to his level of skill, expertise and his genuine care for his patients. I wish everyone had him, I honestly don't think you would see any complaints about this surgery if they were all like him.

    not losing much

you never said, how long you have been on the optifast. But just remember any loss, is still a loss. You are walking a lot, so maybe you are gaining some muscle so the weight loss is not showing up as much. Don't worry, if you are following your diet, all will be good. Good Luck on your surgery.

Congratulation on getting your surgery date. It is cool that we have the same appointment date and surgery date. Good luck with it I am sure everything will go good. I am 29 and I have had problems all my life too. I want to start a family but I could not see myself starting one with the weight that I am. Keep in touch and let me know how your surgery went. Good Luck

    Red Deer or TO?

THANK YOU shringpeach & James for taking the time to give me your answers. Thank you. It is excellent information. I had asked at the information session if we could still get the surgery if we were closer to the 35. The nurse said she would wait & NOT go on a diet yet. I had heard the same from my doc that if you lose the weight they would NOT do surgery, as it has happened to many of her patients. I don't think this is fair because I have lost the weight only to put it back on once I went off, with more added. Just like all the yo yo dieters do. So this is perplexing. I am so scared of going on a diet again without a good tool, which is how I look at the sleeve. I look at the sleeve as being able to resist the hunger in helping me lose weight both during & after I have lost the weight. I don't understand why they would disqualify you if you don't meet their qualifications at time of surgery but they will....so see the dilemma? I want to get going now but am afraid I will ruin my chances to be able to get the sleeve....but as I write this I am thinking maybe I am looking ,at this all wrong. One way or another it is up to me to stop the yo-yoing & having a sleeve is not what will help me....it's what I eat & my exercise. But on the other hand, having to eat very small portions for so long with the sleeve helping me so that I can't possibly eat larger portions may do the trick. May TEACH me to be able to eat smaller portions. Does any of his make sense or am I tricking myself & really a, not getting it? Guess I am going to have to think this one out....again, thank you both for your advice. It is truly appreciated & has given me more to think about..& as for having 20k lying around, I am not one of those people. It would be a few years over which I would be paying that back. Best of luck to you both on your day-to-day fight with this crazy thing, & stay healthy & happy

You would think with all the new inventions out there, they should be able to find a cure for obesity, cancer, etc.. For Petes sake they can make invisibility capes for fighter jets. They can do the beam me up Scottie thing with a photon. How far has the voyager gone? It's out of our universe now, if I remember correctly. But the diet industry is so very lucrative. And they add to it by adding more & more things to make us fatter through better & improved foods that taste so much better. Have you ever watched a cooking channel? They use so much butter & fat that you have to wonder why most of them aren't obese. I don't know what the answer, is other than I am so sick of this fight which has always ended up in failure for me as well as so many others. So do I try again & risk the chance of failure, AGAIN & possibly gaining it all back & more once again? It's pretty scary. Add the cost, be it out of my pocket or the provinces, & that's another scary issue. Perhaps we should all get attachments to our vacu flows & learn how to liposuction? I am so confused. Professor, I hope you make it! I hope you are one of the winners & beat this thing.
  25. OK August 05 Bandsters. Come out, come out, wherever you are! I want to hear from you if you are successful! I want to hear from you if you are struggling, too! I feel a whole lot better with the weight I've lost so far. It's certainly nothing to sneeze at. I stalled for almost a year -- my fault, I should have gone in for another fill but didn't, then we adopted our son and that was a stressful time. Just got adjusted to that and then he had surgery, more stress. And then it was time for the holidays... anyway, I made lots of bad eating choices in the past year. Well, I got my fill and I'm doing a LOT better now. Eating the way I should, working my way through The Beck Diet Solution (highly recommended if you are struggling - it's not a diet, it's coping strategies for people trying to lose or maintain their weight). Anyway, I wish I were here to be an example for people just getting banded of how it's so easy to get to goal and stay there, but sorry, you're out of luck. I'll have to settle for being an example of how you need to stay on top of getting fills, exercise and work on the head stuff. And hopefully, an example of how the band is always there when you're ready! There's no "window of opportunity" that says you have to lose all your weight in one straight shot. Anyone out there from Aug 2005? How ya doin?
