Pre-Op Protein Supplements / Collier Patients
jennyl replied to jennyl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Juleeann! Thanks for responding to my question. Do you mind if I kept in touch with you from time to time to see how you are doing? I don't know anyone personally who has been banded and I'm really really really nervous. How do you feel so far? Was the two weeks pre-op diet difficult? Are you happy you did this? I can't wait and, at the same time, I'm scared to death. Thanks, Jenny -
I lost weight really fast at first, I had a BMI of 35, but overall, although Im within my healthy weight range now, its taken me a good 18 months to lose 80lb. After the initial 9 weeks or so, in which I lost about 30lb (which is a lot when you're only 80lb overweight), my weight loss has been slowish compared to others. But then again, I havent had to lose 100lb before every few lb makes a difference iykwim. Like even when Iw as still 90kg, even 3kg made a visible difference on me, whereas you wouldnt even notice it on someone much bigger. So there's a trade off to the slower loss. I felt I was blessed becuase I was still light enough and fit enough to plunge straight into running after my surgery and was able to exercise intensely from quite early on. Also, I was banded right before Christmas 05, I had a champagne or two over the Christmas period. I'd avoid it for a week or two after surgery but after that, in moderation, alcohol is fine for a special occasion.

Is anyone else eating a lot after 2 weeks of surgery?
nuddybuddy replied to 1hawgfan's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on Aug 8th (9 days ago) I was really starting to starve to death & since my doc. said full liquids anything you can get thru a straw without using a straw I have been having strained cream of chicken & cream of broccoli soup. I also put some creamy potato soup in the blender.I'm assuming these are okay, as they would go thru a straw. I've got to tell you after having only the diet jello & popsicles, broth & juices, these are REALLY hitting the spot. Plus I have 2 protein shakes a day & no sugar added, fruit flavored applesause & some water/juice/diet lipton gree tea. So... I think I'm gonna make it.I just need to start exercising now that I am feeling better. I'm still not supposed to bend down for another week or tug & pull as in the dishwasher, dryer, vacuuming, sweeping & mopping. & no lifting over 10 lbs for 6 weeks. I won't last 6 weeks on that, but I'll be careful. What has your doc. said? I know some people that are jumping in & doing everything right away & I could too, since I'm feeling much better, but I don't want to take the chance of causing band slippage, or just not healing. What do you think? -
For those that have lost 70lbs or more
Jachut replied to wannabthin's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat totally normally, just less. I dont count Protein, I dont focus on protein, I eat carbs, usually Cereal and bread daily, I drink alcohol in moderation and enjoy what I want in moderation when I go out to eat. I basically eat 3 meals a day, no Snacks, that works best for me. I've never drunk a Protein shake and I've never been advised not to drink with meals. Every so often I have a really bad day or week where I eat badly - too much chocolate or Cookies in particular. I write it off and get back on the wagon, I dont wallow in it and go right off the rails. I dont fuss over what there will be to eat wherever I'm going, and I dont obsess over takeing home doggy bags of food I've not finished in a restaurant. So what if I dont eat it all? I just make a decision from what's available wherever I happen to be and yes, sometimes that's even McDonalds! I hate ice cream and sweet drinks so never had to deal with that particular issue. I run for about 45 minutes 4 or 5 times a week and do three fairly tough circuit training sessions a week as well. I've lost 85lb in 18 months which is more than 100% of my excess weight. I'd say its been easy, I really would. It's just been gradual and natural and I've lost my terrible obsession with food and dieting. -

She Smiles replied to wannabthin's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat like Jacqui, which is how we are advised to here in Australia. I eat good healthy foods (which includes rice and Pasta - I can't eat bread) in smaller portions. I also don't count calories/protein. I eat Snacks like almonds, yougurt or fruit cups if I need to, which might be every other day. And I still eat chocolate whenever I feel like it. I've exercised 3-5 times (like a gym session of treadmill, bike and eliptical, a spin class, or a 5km run around my the block near my house and I am also currently doing a boot camp session twice a week) a week for 30-60 minutes since about 2 months after my surgery. I'm now running 5-10km fun runs when they are organised in my city and am fitter and stronger than I have ever been in my life. I've lost about 85lbs in just over 10 months and have about another 20 to go to my dream weight. But I've already exceeded my Surgeon's goal weight. That said, I had a partial unfill a couple of months ago due to a bad stomach bug where I couldn't keep a thing down, and I have yet to get back to my sweet spot. I'm going for a fill tomorrow and I will be back to my pre-bug fill level, so hopefully that will move my loss along a little. -
Dr. Marsden - DFW?
TulipStar replied to yankeerobin's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have used Dr. Marsden as well. He is really a great doctor and has done well over 500 lapbands. He used to be a heart surgeon and won many awards. He has skills that are unbelievable. I am only 3 weeks out and 4 of my 5 scars are almost gone. He is really easy to talk to. I also had my surgery at Wise Regional bc of insurance, which was like an hour away for me, but the hospital is really nice, cleanand the staff were great! The only advice I have for you is to take it easy. Don't be expecting to run a marathon the day after surgery, your body will be healing so take it easy while you can. I really thought that I would be back to "normal" after 2 days and I was depressed when I wasn't. After surgery you will have to call and schedule your post-op appt, which is 2 weeks after your surgery. He will talk to you about how you are feeling, check out your incisions, etc. You might also be surprised at how liberal his post-op diet is. Days 1-7: liquids, Days 8-14:mushies Day 15: all food as tolerated. Just take it easy when introducing new foods. And also schedule your fill by calling SCOR the same day as your post-op. They are running about 3-4 weeks for the earliest appt for fills. My first fill is scheduled on Oct. 18. I can't wait!! PM me for more info and don't worry, you will do great!!! -
I'm almost 6 weeks post op and I am having a really bad time with constipation. My PCP told me to take mineral oil. Has anyone else taken this? Any advise would be helpful.:help:

You may or may not be ready to go back to work in just four days. Don't count on feeling great for at least a week maybe more.
-
I'm so sorry that you're in so much pain. My stomach too is very tight and I've been taking my pain medicine every four hours consistently. The doctor also prescribed something for the gas, maybe you can call and have them put a prescription for you if gas x is not working. Hang in there, I'm only on day three but I have got to hope that it's gonna get better.

@dreukeepr I thought the same thing but ended up taking off all week. I think you will need to give yourself time to heal and you will still be exhausted from the surgery and meds

What if I get banded and I don't lose any weight?
mgmagnolia posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Everyone, I'm Maggie. I'm going to be banded on July 27. Even though I know it's not logical to worry, I still am. What if after I'm banded and I do everything the way I'm supposed to: follow the new diet, do the exercise and follow up at the doc's like I'm supposed to, and I don't lose weight? I guess what is making me think that is that I'm on the liquid pre-surgery diet right now. My doc told me that I would lose 20-30 pounds on it. Right now I'm holding at 12 pounds and I still have a week to go yet. I haven't lost anything this week at all. I have not cheated. I have done exactly as I am supposed to be doing. So I don't know what is wrong other than I need to exercise right now to get it moving. I know that realistically if I do what they tell me the weight will come off. I'm just worried that what if I'm the one oddball that doesn't? Just some pre-surgery jitters I'm sure, but I wondered if anyone else thought the same thing or is it just me? -
Im 24 weeks out and only lost 40pounds...I know how you feel. What im starting to do is low carb and a regular exercise. Best of luck to us both! Sent from my LGLS775 using the BariatricPal App

Anyone have info on Dr. Jonathon Ray in Maryville, TN
finallyready@51 posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hello everyone, I am scheduled for surgery on 4/30. This past week I had a spouse of a CRNA express concern about my choice of surgeons. It actually freaked me out a little bit. She suggested I do my 'due dilligence' and look at complication rates etc. I have done all that, in fact did it before I selected Dr. Ray. Now, it is making me a little freakie. I chose him and his office because they were a 'Center of Excellance' as certified by the American Bariatric Center. Anyway, I would be interested in hearing of anyones experiences with Dr. Ray. -
Can You Feel The Band?
Padanelle replied to thinoneday's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
About a week ago I experienced a NSV: being able to feel my port! Prior to that, I hadn't a clue where it was. I have read that people can feel the liquid moving theough the tube when they have a fill, but I don't feel a thing! -
Pre op diet...I cheated, well just a little...
kiz replied to LILYTAM's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Almost anyone who has significant weight to lose and has started a new diet loses several pounds the first week of a diet. You've been doing this for several months, so it's not surprising you didn't get that initial exciting loss. Don't feel disheartened. Good luck here on out. -
Yea! I just got approved last week too. I will be banded April 10th. Feels like forever, but I'm sure it will be here in no time! When is your surgery date? I think it will be worth the wait...it certainly can't be worse! Good luck!

Hi JaxBandster, Congrats on your surgery - glad to read that you're doing well! As for the hoarseness, I think you're right about the breathing tube. I've not had hoarseness with this surgery, but back in September I had surgery involving a breathing tube, and I was hoarse for a couple of weeks. I asked the doctor about it, and he said it was due to the tube and that it would resolve. But, it is strange that it's just starting several days post surgery -maybe worth a call to the surgeon's office just in case. Best of luck with your post-op diet....I'm starting week 2 of mine tomorrow. -Susanne

Depressed because of weight gain
leag78 replied to Tess White's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You are only 4 weeks out, and your body is still healing. Your weight will fluctuate in the beginning because your body is still trying to recover. I think by your sixth week, you will be fine. Just try to focus on protein and water, as they will be your best friend in this journey and your weight will fall. You're just going through the healing process unfortunately right now. -

Acne and a New Diet
BelleOfBatonRouge replied to mousecat88's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I get bad hormonal cystic acne and a few blackheads and regular pimples here and there. By day three of the pre-op liquid diet my skin was glowing from all of the bone broth- I guess that collagen really does improve your skin! The whole starving myself under medical supervision thing also caused me to have a breakthrough period, which was literally a living hell. Evwn with that I only got two small pimples that have already faded, when the norm is usually two or three big cystic pimples that hang around for weeks. So long term, I’m not sure. But so far my skin loves the liquid diet (and that’s the only part of me that does) also i I know you say you’ve tried every topical but have you tried differin? It used to be Rx only and is now OTC. It doesn’t completely clear all of my acne, but it manages it very well -
I have a VG band put in July '06. I had two fills in TJ, but still had no restriction. Went to a fill Dr. in Ohio in October, who filled me to 6.2 cc. I was a little tight, but waited until beginning of Jan. 07 to have .5cc taken out. I was having pain and back aches went I ate solid foods. Three weeks later, I had another .5cc taken out (5.2cc fill now). It has been exactly one week now, and I've been taking Prilosec OTC and Mylanta, but still cannot eat any solid foods without getting a sour stomach, and having nausea all the time practically. I'm so worried, and I don't know if this is a sign of slippage. The doctor said that if I couldn't had trouble after 3 weeks, to come back for an upper GI (I think that's the test)...but I"m miserable...then, again, could I just have the flu?? I've lost 60lbs...so, that's a good thing!! Please, someone help me... Jodie

Hi I thought I would introduce myself. Im Melinda 41 and live in London uk. I had my Sleeve done on the 8th February 2011 at the Hommerton Hospital In Hackney. I was first referred there by my diabetic doctor 14 momths previous to surgery. Having diabetes that was steadily getting worse, high blood pressure, high cholestrol wls was considered the best option for me. I went to my first appointment thinking of having a gastric band, they soon said no to that, and suggested I have the Gastric Bypass. So my starting weight was 17and a half stone. and at 4ft 11inches my bmi was 44, if i remember rightly. Before surgery I got down to 16 stones. I had complications during my surgery hence why I ended up having a Gastric Sleeve instead of a Bypass, they had a struggle to keep me alive, due to me having pnemonia. My post op period was herrendous, i had to have further surgery, and am still currently having breathing problems. I see the hospital every two weeks, and my doctors once a week. But I am now 6 weeks down the line and am feeling so much better than i did I am nearly me again, minus 33lbs lol... I no longer take blood pressure tablets, its normal for the first time in 16 yrs lol. But I am still due to my surgeons advice only on stage 2 of eating, ie mushy food, and I am still struggling with pain, am off to see my surgeon later today so hoping he can give me some advice. Anyway think ive kinda waffled abit now so will sign off for now.

Only a 3 day liquid pre op diet?
DownInSocal replied to longhorn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only had to do 3 days liquid, or maybe it was 2. I can't remember. I didn't have to do the two week thing though. I know that for sure. -
Best way to lose weight after vsg
WanderingHeart replied to skinny onboard's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Most surgeons give you a plan that starts with a liquid phase. That is for allowing your stomach to heal, but it may end up being less than 500 calories per day. Depending on the plan they give you and how your body adjusts, you may be eating 500-700 during those transitional weeks after surgery. i never track calories, personally. I listen to my body’s signs of fullness and prioritize protein and fresh vegs and fruit. It is possible that consuming too few calories will actually result in your body stalling because it will think you are starving and go into survival mode. -
