One month post-op and feeling good
kvdme replied to mlowell's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Im 2 weeks Monday and haven't lost another pound since 3 days ago. Really discouraging. -
I can't believe that in just one week, my life will be forever changed! I am currently on the liquid diet and it is not as bad as I thought it would be. I am so ready for this new chapter in my life to begin! For the past 10 plus years I feel like I have been in hibernation - trapped in a body that was ever-increasing in size. Now I am just a week away from getting the tool I need to re-awaken myself and I cannot wait!

My new plan to reduce snacking habits/ increase weight loss
gomekast replied to mamamareli's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 10 weeks post op VSG. I've been experimenting with the same thing. If I eliminate the shakes I don't lose a thing. If I add even 1 in per day I lose half a pound per day. My nuts want me to not be having any shakes but I know they work for me. I understand their logic and reasons but I'm just not sure what to do. Keep having 1 shake per day and not tell them or go to all food and lose much slower than everyone else. -
I was wondering if anyone could answer this for me: My trainer told me to check with my Dr about extra protein since I'm training with him 3X a week now ( on top of my regular cardio at the gym). Do I need extra protein? My Dr (or nurses, staff etc) do not answer questions over the phone. I was just there last week for a fill, and honestly don't want to have to pay yet another expensive copay to go ask him this question. Any input would be GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks everyone!

Taking it slow is a hard one for me. I bite- chew to oblivion, wait like two-3 minutes bite again (and yeah, I time it) sounds stupid but I'm getting to where I don't need a timer.

Mental Issues
Newfoundlove replied to beachlover1129's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with previous comments. Don't think about what you used to be able to eat. This is going to be a new normal for you. At three weeks out I was on soft foods and my NUT included hard boiled eggs cut up in egg salad. But, also, I could only eat 1/4 cup of food at that time. I had a few instances of eating a little too fast and missing the full signal until it was almost too late, and let me tell you that you really don't want to realize that too late or you will feel like poo! So, I really did just measure everything out into 1/4 cup then 1/3 cup and eating slowly. Now, at almost five weeks out I can eat a little faster, but I still measure everything out. Most foods I can get 1/2 cup of, but not always. Sometimes, I get the signal after five bites or so and I stop. I also use very small utensils (cocktail forks and demitasse spoons) to limit the size of the bite I take. Items like dark meat chicken take me longer to eat though as I have the chew the heck out of them to get them to go down well. -
I'm having one of those quick fill days. Can't finish things I usually can. Can only finish 2/3 of my oikos for an example. Drinking less water as it's getting stuck in my throat. What do you prioritize protein or water? Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

Sharp, grabbing pain several weeks post-surgically
Ms. Brightside replied to ryan_86's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'd be curious to know whether anyone has any insight, as I have had the same pain under my right rib for a while now (& I haven't yet had surgery). My best guess is a hernia. :/ I plan to ask my surgeon at my consultation In a couple of weeks. Sent from my SM-T350 using the BariatricPal App -
My experience was I was able to drive 20 minutes to the store 3 dpo but I was really really tired. My reaction time was really slow and what saved me is that I was on a country road rather than up in DC where I live. It's now 5 dpo and I can drive longer distances but it really tires me. I'm still on medication for pain but only take it 2x a day. I think you could, but it would be very risky. Is it possible for him to get his license before your surgery date? Even a permit would allow him to drive as long as a licensed driver was in the car with him.

How long until 1st fill??
paracelsus51 replied to MrsShannonDennis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was supposed to be at five weeks, but since the doctor is going to be out, it will be at 4 weeks. I start soft foods this weekend. I haven't had any problems and since I've been doing nothing but drinking stuff, I don't get full. I do burp a lot, but that's not new. -
Silly question? When were you able to sleep on your stomach.

So something strange has happened to me tonight and I can't find it anywhere on google or perhaps I'm just not typing the write thing or using the correct terminology. Ive just hit 6 weeks since my gastric sleeve. Recovery went really well but I'm still trying to learn what I can and can't eat and what my limits are, sometimes throwing up. Tonight I had home made gnocchi, I didn't force myself and I ate probably about 10 (no extra ingredients, just sauce) and I ate it over two hours, so it wasn't consistent with maybe two sips of water in between. I've now realised while getting changed is my stomach is almost bulging out, so I hope is my stomach anyway... It's like a big lump, on my left side where my ribs are below my breast. Here's a photo. I'm slightly worried, usually things that have happened for example 3 week stall, I could find a lot on it in this forum but this one I couldn't find anything hope it just means I over ate, or just something new I haven't notice in my body - I don't know. Sorry the photo isnt great, wouldn't really show up in pics

Need to vent about weight and habits
NovaLuna replied to Lilypop's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Even if you DO stretch your stomach a bit as long as you're making healthier choices for foods I don't see you regaining much. I mean 5-10 pounds is pretty much normal for regain so if it happens just try to work to get it off and I'm sure you'll be able to do it eventually. Rice swells though after you eat it so it can potentially lead to your stomach stretching. That's the reason my surgeon advised us to not eat rice anymore (I use cauliflower rice as a substitute). But if rice is something you don't want to give up you don't have to. Just know that it CAN stretch your stomach out. It was ADVISED anyway. The choice on whether to add rice back into our diet is very much our own. For me I eat mostly in the morning as I get sooooo hungry after taking my thyroid meds, but the rest of the day I basically have little to no appetite. I talked to my nutritionist on Monday and we went over my diet and I unloaded about how I ate mostly in the morning and I ate a LOT in a 3-4 hour period and she said that I was doing fine and stressing over nothing as my weight loss has been steady and I'm not going over my carb, fat, sugar, etc. limit and I'm getting my protein in like I'm supposed to. Apparently my metabolism is most active after I take the stupid thyroid meds and decides to sleep the rest of the day lol -
Need to vent about weight and habits
Lilypop posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am about a year and two months in and I’m scared to death about gaining. My food intake in a sitting with a chicken breast and salad is about 6 ounces and rice yes I said rice but never everyday about once or twice a week at max I intake about 2 ounces if not 3 and the meat is about 3 ounces at max. Other days I’ll take in about 7 ounces and I’m scared I’m stretching my stomach with these ounces. I do walk my 11-15k steps in the day but I catch myself snacking on a piece of toast or pickles as my meal with nothing else for hours on end. Maybe I have to take it back a bit and control it but even tho my weight has been between 158-161 lb I feel like imma stretch it and that 6-7 ounces will kill me. How has your struggles been? Anyone else have some venting. It’s just what’s on my mind. -
Honestly, today is just one week post op and I haven't found much of anything to help me. The emotions are still all over the place. Ive been told it's typically 2 weeks or so before you're back to normal. I hope I didn't scare you. Some people have zero problems with the hormones causing emotional issues, some people have only a slight problem and then others like me have a pretty hard time. There's really no way to know how each of us will react, but I think it's better to be prepared for this one just in case. The most important thing is to have your support person understand that this is a possibility. That way they are prepared and they understand it is only temporary. I was truly, legitimately ANGRY about having lost only 1 pound in the 5 days post op. I was crying and yelling and wanting to call my surgeon and scream at him. Of course I now see how absolutely illogical and ridiculous that was but in the moment it was very real and the fury I was feeling was real. That's just an example. Most of my emotions have leaned more to very sad and crying as opposed to anger. I was crying because I felt hungry and I thought that meant I was too fat and disgusting to succeed at WLS because I kept telling myself I shouldn't feel hungry. Just things like that... completely illogical things. But, as we know, emotions aren't always logical. So, just have your support person be there for you and show you kindness and compassion no matter how utterly ridiculous your mood swings may appear to them. And if things really do get too bad, your surgical team is familiar with this happening to patients and will be able to help you. Perhaps maybe even prescribing a mood stabilizer or anxiety medication for a couple of weeks if needed. June 12, 2017 I had my lap-band removed, my gallbladder removed and received an RNY. I'm just four weeks out and I can drink water easily. It's not forever for some of us. It was a huge concern for me. I used to be able to drink a half of a bottle at once and while I can't do that I can take three huge swallows with no pain as long as my stomach is empty. Can't wait to hear your journey!

The very best advice is the same thing that drove me crazy in the first couple of weeks... Stay hydrated! And walk (I had that one down). :) Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
