    September surgery buddies!!

I just started ordering things to get ready and to kind of spread out the purchases since I still have a month before I start the liquid diet. Anyone else buying stuff yet and what are you getting? I bought myself a pill dispenser that has up to 4 options daily since I'll be taking the ProCare chewables for one month and then the capsules. I have to have 2 calcium chews a day with that and my thyroid meds too. I bought only a month worth of the chewables and a 3 month supply of the capsules. I tried 2 different protien drinks and I like the premier over the ensure that the Drs office gave me. So I have a few flavors of that. I don't want to drink them before I need them but I hope I like them when I do have to drink them. Its weird to me that jello, pudding and yogurt are allowed on a liquid diet, but I'm not going to argue since I think I'll probably appreciate the thickness over broth. I'm a planner as you can tell and I just want to be prepared but not too much or it might even spoil beforeI get to use it. Anything else you guys are doing to get ready?

    Food question

I don't know exactly when but I know for a fact it was after 6 weeks. At 6 weeks is when I was easing back into a normal diet. I made nachos with them, ground taco meat, cheese and hot sauce. I ate 3 and was full. haha PS: I don't like them. The after taste is weird. Popcorners flex protein chips are way better. (IMO) I never really cooked with butter and oil. I might buy butter once a year and have had the same bottle of olive oil forever. Like a few years. I think I used butter/oil for the first time after 6 weeks too, just because that was when I started cooking "normal" foods again.

    Fluid Intake

I have not had any problems with getting in my fluids. I get dehydrated VERY quickly so I was very focused on making the effort. Now (4 months post op) it is natural and basically back to normal. I can drink normal, large amounts, I would say I even chug. Every once in a blue moon it hits heavy if I chug too fast but the feeling goes away in a minute or 2 so still not an issue. I average 70oz of WATER a day, plus my daily shake and if I have something else like tea or something. I don't prefer fake sugar either, but luckily I like unsweet tea and use shakes to flavor decaf coffee now. I am not even much of a coffee drinker. I like the flavor of coffee, so before surgery those sugary coffee drinks, coffee flavored icecream and stuff like that. Now, I just take black coffee with caramel protein drinks and it is just as good to me. When I first came home from surgery, they gave me a bunch of 1 oz. cups and said I need to get 2/3 drinks out of each cup and work my way up. I would fill them and start a tally to keep track. Each day I made a point to beat yesterdays tally until I hit my goal. It made me focused and made it easy to hit the goal but I was definitely drinking ALL DAY LONG. Maybe try something like that to keep you moving forward, you can also buy the hydration additives I mentioned. I don't know if they have artificial sweeteners though. Also, keep in mind the additives don't allow you to drink less water, it just helps your body absorb the water better.

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

It's possible I'll be having my surgery in November 2022 or December 2022. I'm going through the insurance approval steps. (6 months of classes and other required tests) I'll be able to submit to insurance at the end of November and will hear back in October. So, at that point we can schedule with the doctor who is booked out about 2-3 months. I see you're in SC and so am I. So, we could be surgery month buddies or at least close! Good luck!

    July 2022 peeps!

Congratulations @KevinS62 on your theee weeks! Same for me. I did get on the scale for the first time yesterday and I’ve lost 15lbs which I am very happy with. 25 to goal. Clothes are fitting better and I have a lot of energy for the first time this week. Biggest challenge is not eating because boredom. I’ve been able to tolerate everything I have tried, in much smaller portions of course. I am about to go to “regular food” this weekend. Not being hungry is an interesting feeling, I’ll try to make the most of it while I can. Im heading home to the UK for a trip next weekend and very excited to see my family. hope everyone else is doing well!
  6. @kcuster83 Thanks for your tips. Yeah, as I said, my diet plan is exageratingly conservative. It has no puree stage and very slowly introduces soft foods and meats (they say chew, chew, chew). It's probably a week or three behind others and I'm not skeert to reach into the week 6-7 menu for an item or two to try in weeks 5-6. In moderation, of course. I have learned NOT to ask the dietician anything. I won't like her answer. She goes strictly by the written guide. When I was able to speak to the surgeon, he was more open and basically said the menu was conservative to work for all patients and I could try something off plan, but to stop if it doesn't work. I'm not a huge egg salad person but I may try a light tuna or chicken salad. Taco Bell beans is a great idea.
  7. Hmmmm, brain storm time. No meat for 6 weeks? Never heard that one before. Whew. Snacks: Yogurts, cheeses, hard boil eggs? That's about the only thing I can think of that would travel. You could order soups and not eat certain things depending on what is in the soup? Charcuterie appetizer and your family could eat the things that you can't? Egg salad, don't eat the bread? Or get crackers if you are allowed. I ate taco bell refried beans and black beans a few times. That's about all I can think of, I was allowed meat at the pureed stage (pureed obviously). It is also so close to allowing the meat, maybe reach out to your team and see if you could try softer meats a few days early? That would REALLY open up your options. PS: I don't care for the quest chips but a lot of people do so I hope you are one of them who like them after taking that plunge. I like the popcorners flex protein chips the best. Good luck and safe travels!

    7 months after ESG

Why on earth would you have to be on a liquid diet for 4 weeks? I was on a clear liquid for a few days, then full liquid until two weeks out, and I found that to be torture! Congrats on sticking to it!
  9. Hey all, I'm sure this has been asked a bazillion times, but the wife, adult son and I are leaving next week for a vacation/family visit. The road trip is 1,000 miles. I feel great right now and we take turns driving, so that's not the issue. We make this trip annually and will likely have 2-3 fuel stops and will stop another couple times to eat. When we leave, I'll be four weeks post-op, so I'm looking at my week 5 and 6 menu items, and I am asking for your tips and tricks when going on a long trip Drinks: I will bring coffee, water and pre-mixed protein shakes for fluids. Maybe a Gatorade Zero for a change in pace. Snacks: What snacks are suggested? According to my nutrition plan, about the only things I could have thru week 4 are the protein drinks, string cheese and some peeled fruit. I'll be right at the start of Week 5 which mentions up to 3 Multi-grain crackers a day, but I ordered some of the Quest Protein Chips. (I purchase $95 worth, so hope they are good). 😋 Restaurants: This is probably where I'm looking for the most tips and tricks most. What restaurants have good menu items to choose from and food items should I be looking for? For example, a Big Mac, minus the bun, (which does not sound good right now), LOL. *Full disclosure, my nutrition plan really does not mention meat or salads until week 6 when I can have tuna and baked fish and then add baked chicken, lean ground beef, ground turkey and salads. But, I'm not against trying some of this (in moderation of course), if other plans allow these items sooner. I realize my nutrition plan is exageratingly conservative.

    Nutritionalist consult

That will be me for my two week pre-op surgery liquid diet. Absolutely NO solids drinking 4 shakes a day! I just bought an 18 case box of premier protein and found out there's a recall on them!

    July 2022 peeps!

She has not mentioned it to me in my two appointments with her and it's not even talked about in my menu/nutrition plan. In a FAQ she sent me last week, it says calories needed depend on gender, age and activity level, but a general rule of thumb is around 1,000 calories a day. The FAQ does not say when to start the "1,000 per day" thing, but I find it somewhat difficult during the liquid phase and I plan to build up to it as I increase my activity level. In the meantime, I'm concentrating on the 90g protein and 64oz fluid/water.

    July 2022 peeps!

Hi, kevin! Did your dietitian set the calorie range? Mine won't. She told me to work on getting 60-90 g of protein. I'm averaging about 700 cal a day. Losing about 1-2 lbs a week. I did lose 10 lbs the first 10 days. Have lost 18 lbs since I started liquid diet 6 weeks ago. Made my first goal of 225 already. I was 252 on my first appointment last June.

    Monthly weigh in and measurements

My surgeon gave me a graph based on my height and surgery weight. Showing how I should drop weight through the first year (based on national averages). It has me at 20lbs for the first 3 months, then around 15 lbs until 7 months and then it hangs out around 10 lbs a month for the rest of the year. At 3 months it has me at -64.1 lbs, at my 3 month follow up I was -77 lbs! Everyone is different. I have really good weeks and very low weeks. But I only weigh on Mondays which was my surgery day. I like the graph just to give me an idea. I also use it as personal "challenge" to stay ahead of my graph even if just by 1 lb. Keeps me focused!

    August Surgery Buddies!

My surgery was scheduled for Aug. 1. The morning before they called to cancel because the surgeon was not available to operate (it sounded like they got sick). It was devastating after waiting so long and going though a two week liquid diet. They called on Aug. 3 to reschedule for Sept. 20. I’m excited to have a date again, but I’m not looking forward to redoing the prep and waiting so long. I guess I’m a Sept. Buddy now. Wishing all of you Aug Buddies the best on your surgery day!
  15. I hope I am replying correctly... Thank you and congratulations on your weight loss!! That is a huge accomplishment! Good luck on your skin surgery. My primary doctor referred me to positive change classes and I took the nutrition class about 3 years ago. After that and during covid I gained soooo much weight and she (primary) recommended the surgery. I took classes online and then did my blood tests and that was it. Then I had a hospital stay (unrelated to weight) March, 2021 so I had to wait on my surgery. Fast forward to April of 2022 and my doctor said I should be ok to have weight loss surgery. I contacted Positive Change and they did not require me to retake classes and reordered my blood tests, I had a psy evaluation, and did not pass the first because I had not lost any weight (I actually gained) and he didnt think I put in the work. I had another appointment with him about 6 weeks later (mid July) and had lost weight so he approved me. I just had a phone consultation with a surgeon and he approved me for the sleeve on the condition that my specialist says its OK. He said the sleeve is better for me due to the medications I have to take. Since I went through my classes a long time ago, I watched tons of videos on youtube from other surgical hospitals etc. A lot of places seem like they are really connected to their patients and give them so much support. For me, I feel like I am on an island. I haven't talked to a nutritionist, or anyone else walking me through this process. Most of my info this time around is via youtube; and I just found this place last night. What I am most worried about is drinking water. I get migraines if I get slightly dehydrated. I have been working out to lose weight and noticed how much I drink. I am trying to sip water throughout the day but I am failing at keeping myself hydrated and have had a migraine almost every day. How do you do it? Set alarms? How do you go through your day sipping so much water? How do you work like that? I also saw that you cannot eat gummy vitamins is that true? I cannot find that in the positive change book, maybe I missed it. Thank you for your support and all the help!

    WLS and wisdom teeth surgery

You might want to discuss your plans with both providers? It's not uncommon for doctors to want 6 weeks or more between surgical procedures (yes, having your wisdom teeth removed is considered a surgical procedure). Better to know now, than to find out when you go in to have the work done! Your WLS may or may not be okay with this timing as well, so it's better to check.

    July 2022 peeps!

How are you doing? Welcome to the July Peeps. As for your question, the answer is yes. I'm 3 weeks post-op and have probably averaged one BM every 2-3 days due to having mostly fluid diet. As you graduate to more solid foods, I'm certain you will have more frequent toilet visits.
  18. Time for my monthly measurements and weigh in... Surgery April 18th. I weigh and measure myself on the 4th of every month. As you can see this past month has been very minor improvements. I was in a stall for a couple weeks and i think i am breaking the stall. 3 month follow up was last week. Went over blood work and my iron was just 1 point below normal. Otherwise all other vitamin test were in the green. I am hoping next weigh in i am at least in the 230's to 220's at least.
  19. I've been having tomato soup since the first day home (water mixed in for week 1, and milk added in week 2). Then I and added V8 Juice in week 3 and have had no issues. I'd say go for it, but if it bothers your stomach, step back from it and try again in a few weeks.

    July 2022 peeps!

Hey y'all. I just wanted to post a Three-week update. I feel good. Pretty much normal even. Except, of course, with a smaller stomach capacity Incisions are fully closed. The small ones look good and only the largest still has any leftover scabbing. I'm trying to stay positive since I've lost more than 20 pounds since surgery. But my weight loss progress has slowed more than I thought it would this early. Maybe it's the third week stall we keep hearing about. W1: -12.6 lbs W2: -5.6 lbs W3: -2.6 lbs My conservative diet plan sucks, but it improves a little this week, since I can add cottage cheese, shredded cheese, beans, canned fruit and some specific well-cooked veggies (only carrots and asparagus look appetizing). I am logging everything. I am getting 80-100g of protein, 50-90 oz of water/fluids, and 650-750 calories daily. I have not done great on my steps/walking/exercise, but plan to fix that this week now that things at work has calmed a bit. I have now lost a total of 48.6 lbs since I started losing weight in late March when I had my "Oh Hell No!" moment and contacted the surgeon's office. I am feeling pretty good about that.
  21. I had constipation for the first few days, then once I got through that i had HORRIBLE diarrhea for about 2 weeks. Maybe not as bad as you describe, but every time I "ate" or drank a shake I was in the bathroom within 30 minutes. After that, I am as normal as I can imagine (after 10++ years of constipation issues). I go just about daily and I do not take ANY supplements to help.

    Food Before and After Photos

Surprisingly yes! I woke up today (day 4) and felt SO much better. Tomorrow after an interview for a new position I’ll be meal prepping for my work week ahead (woohoo for mandatory rotating work weekends 😒🙄)

    One Week Until Surgery

I am on my fourth day of pre op diet and the surgery can't come soon enough. The hunger is real, thankfully the liquid part only lasts two days. I didn't realize how dependent I was on grains and dairy until now. Your surgery will go great! I wish you the best. Sent from my Pixel 3 using BariatricPal mobile app

    No weight loss

If you’re only 4 weeks out it sounds like the “3 week stall” most people go through one. Your body has been through a lot the last few weeks and is trying to recalibrate itself. Just stick with your plan and keep going.

    Denied by insurance

Yeah I completed the 3 months of nutrition counseling with the surgeons office, but now they’re requesting a year of documentation that I did work with my PCP on my weight loss. Provided them 10 years of receipts from WW, weight logs from yearly exams, etc to show the weight didn’t magically appear in the last week (apparently that can happen with a BMI over 40 😂😂) SMH lol
