2. I had my surgery 10 days ago. And I still feel pain when walking, unless I support my stomach. The pain is in the largest incision region. It kind of makes me walk hunched over. Other than this pain is minimal. Do others have this pain? I thought the pain would be gone by now.

Keto diet question

I disagree with with Dabeyhive and RickM's comments above. Sure, keto isn't for everyone, but it's great for many people. I love the fact that it gives me some firm rules to follow and it happens to fit my eating preferences. First, I don't believe Keto is a fad diet at all. It's been around in various forms since the 1920's and became the basis of the original Atkin's diet in the early 1970's. It works very well both for weight loss and general health benefits. The problem is that some people don't really understand the diet or follow it correctly--and that's where people into problems. Following a proper Keto diet doesn't mean you should be chowing down on cheeseburgers without the bun eating bacon with every meal. While cheeseburgers and bacon are not prohibited on Keto, those aren't recommended either. You should stick to things like organic eggs, lean organic meats and wild caught fatty fish (like sockeye salmon). Stay away from fatty meats, since the fat is bad things the animals consumed are stored. You then add healthy fats to your food, like avocado, MCT oil, extra virgin olive oil, ghee etc. The idea is to "prime the pump", so you body burns off its excess glycogen stores and then converts stored fats into ketones for energy. This is important, especially if you're insulin resistant. For me, I am really happy with Keto and I can definitely stay on keto long term. My surgeon and nutritionist are on board with my keto choices. I just had my blood work done after 2 months on Keto and everything was perfect. I am no longer diabetic (A1C dropped from 6.3 on multiple meds to 5.1 on no meds). My triglycerides dropped to 54 (they were 450 this past summer on meds). My cholesterol is 190, but my good cholestrol is 97 (which is outstanding)--so that's good. Some of these may be from the surgery, but diet and exercise are equally critical. I suggest that you don't do keto on your own, but you do with with the guidance of a doctor or nutritionist that has a lot of knowledge about keto. I personally keep my net carbs down to approximately 20g a day and close to a 1:1 ration of fat to protein. At this point, I am 14 weeks post op (99 days). I am eating between 1200-1600 calories a day. Those calories are made up of 45% protein, 45% fat and 10% carbs. The carbs I am consuming are mostly from vegetables--even green veggies have some carbs. I don't eat any bread, starches, potatoes, sugar etc. I avoid high carb fruit, but I am allowed berries. I avoid processed foods to the greatest extent I can. I also work out daily--at a high intensity (and have been since I had all physical restrictions removed 1 month after surgery). I have lost 70 pounds since my highest weigh in. My pants size has dropped from a 44 to a 32. My body fat has dropped from 28% to 16.5%. Weight loss surgery is only a tool (a good one), but I would say it gives you a head start and helps prepare balance your body's hormones and stomach so people like me (morbidly obese, with a trifecta of co-morbidities) can lose weight like a normal person without insulin resistance/diabetes and other issues that get in the way. Once I had those issues, in check the rest of it was up to me--with keto and serious exercise making the big difference in getting me to where I want to be. I'll let my pictures speak for themselves: The was me on July 4, 2018 (weighing around 255-260) : This is me on the day of Surgery (weight 235): This is me on March 23, 2019 (weighing 190): As a 45 year old man with diabetes etc., no way I could have done this without VSG. However, I really believe Keto and exercise (45 minutes moderate to high intensity cardio 5-6 times a week and 1 hour of high intensity weight training 4-5 times a week) have changed my health and my life. I can't imagine going back to the life I had before surgery, nor could I imagine not living a keto lifestyle at this point.

Missing work??

I am having surgery 10/7/11 and returning to work on 10/17/11. My work takes your vacation when you are off for FMLA . My vacation year goes from sept to sept. I don't want to burn all my time I want to enjoy some vacation next summer in my new body. My Dr had this surgery himself and only took 10 days off also before he was back in the OR.. I can sit quite a bit at work but it is very high stress ( I am a Nursing Supervisor) I think barring any complications I will be fine. I am soooo excited to start this journey!
5. I had gastric bypass dec 16 ,2015 and surgery great but since been home really been hard water is so hard to get down and very heavy ,so if protein my taste buds have changed so much I hate any artificial auger it gags me I even hate natural sugar everything taste like pure syrup .esting at all is slow and get nausea a lot but weirdest is if I walk or do much after 10 minute sweat so bad could wring me out and I get cold clammy has anyone else felt this .this is more than I expected some days and I'm very emotional .does it get easier ? Good side is I have lost almost 30 lbs at 3 week mark
6. I've been doing low carbs since my surgery (about 10 1/2 mos. out) -- I DO NOT count the carbs in my fruits and veggies. I figure they're good for you, you should be eating them, so they don't count. I DO count the carbs in breads, pastas, cereals, rice, etc. You get the idea. Frankly, I think (and it's just my belief) that given our small stomachs, we need as much fiber as we can possibly get -- I still battle constipation and if I don't get enough fiber in, I'm miserable. I've also come to realize in my short time post op, that while we should restrict "bad" carbs, we need to emulate normal eating as much as possible. Our tummies are going to be naturally restrictive (seriously) -- and despite what we eat (even if we fall off the wagon), we're going to lose. I'm about 5 pounds from goal and am still losing at a pretty good clip, despite the fact that I'm upping my calories, upping my carbs, etc. The thing about weight loss, something I think we often lose sight of (and I do all the time despite almost being at goal and almost a year out) -- is that we don't lose at a steady rate. It's stair steps -- sometimes we lose a bunch, then our bodies stop. Then we lose, then we stop. It's our bodies' way of adjusting to the weight loss -- it's mentally frustrating (believe me!) -- but, we have to accept that we will lose as long as we are active and eating well. Now, if you're gonna binge on cake, well after awhile you're not gonna lose. But, eating well, moving our bods, and keeping the weight loss thing in perspective is what it's all about
7. Hi!! Ok, honestly this is exactly what I do. First, I record everything I put in my mouth on Fatsecret.com. I've set it to record my net carbs (that is the carbs minus the fiber). If I eat an apple or veggies (like broccoli or something like that) I record them and note how many carbs I've eaten. Now if I've eat a lot of carbs but most of the carbs are due to veggies and/or fruit (like apples), then I know that I'm ok as long as the rest of my carbs aren't over the top. For example, one of the granny smith apples I eat can be 20 or more carbs. I'll probably eat 30 more carbs during the day because I think apples are a good thing to eat. I know that's not very scientific, but it seems to work for me. And in reality, it's not very low carb in the sense of eschewing all carbs, but I essentially have gotten rid of the processed carbs but still eat the real carbs -- if that makes sense. As for beans, I think you should do what you think is best. I record my beans and if they're super high in carbs, I'd probably count them. But if they're not high in carbs, I probably wouldn't. Depends on the beans. For instance, I had 1/2 cup of lentil chili for lunch -- 16 net carbs -- 8.5 g Protein. The lentils plus the apple put me at 36 g of carbs already for today. Oh well. Both are really good for me and I hardly think I'm doing myself a disservice by eating them. Will I have more carbs for dinner? probably. But not enough to make me a carb monster, know what I mean? I hope this is helpful. I know I'm not specific about the carbs, but really I have limited those things that I think are harmful to me -- like processed carbs (sugar, bread, etc.) Other things like fruits and beans and veggies I record but don't really limit myself. Clear as mud? Thanks for the girl crush. I'm happy that you enjoy the vids -- sometimes I think I have nothing to say and I say it for 10 minutes - ugh. I think I need some topics. Maybe you all can feed me some topics -- I'm happy to run my mouth on and on about stuff as long as I have something to say.

Curves?

I had belong to Curves for one year and for myself I had no success. I went 3 times a week and did not lose any weight even while trying to diet. I am getting ready to join planet fitness here, they have $1 sign up and $10 a month which includes unlimited time with a trainer. Hours are better for me to get to them. Good Luck, it may work for you.

Cost of fills...

All my fills are paid for by French National Health--which means I have paid for it with my taxes--and done in a radiologist's office with fluoroscope. But I do see what the office bills the National Health agency, and it is 315 euros. I have to supply the barium, however, and that is out of pocket--about 10 euros/bottle.

Kate's "The Works" special

Congratulations, Kate. I've been dancing around 205 for nearly 8-10 months and am still technically overweight. I would love to drop another 20, but if it never happens, I'm still happy. I'd love to hear more about your PS as it gets closer. Can I assume you're covered by insurance? I will be completely self paid, but feel like it's the only right way to end this long journey. Keep us posted. I look forward to reading all about it! Good luck!:scared2:
11. Hi everyone! I have been lurking around many WLS sites for months, this is my first time posting. I'm having the Roux n Y bypass on March 12th. I can't believe how close it is! I'm getting nervous, but I'm far more excited than I am nervous. A little about me...I'm 37 single mom of a 12yr old boy and 2yr old girl. I have struggled with my weight pretty much since I can remember. However it has really spiraled out of control these last 10 years. I'm 5'2 and a 1/2 (lol) and 270lbs. I'm looking forward to a much more active lifestyle, I have a long list of "first's" to complete. Most importantly I want to be a better example to my children, as well as be able to physically enjoy time with them outdoors etc..

How Painful Was The Surgery?

A lot really depends on the surgeon that you have. I know a lot of people complain of gas pains, however I had ZERO gas pains after surgery. My surgeon assured me up front that he works very had to get all of the excess gas that they pump in you out before he's done. He also put a drain in for 24 hours which was supposed to help and I felt great. Immediatly after I woke up in recovery I felt nauseous. The nurse was quick to help me out. she gave me some meds for nausua but first she put an alcohol swab on my nose... she said that it would help the nausea and amazing enough... it did. Who knew. I tried it a couple times at home when I had some nausea and it helped then too. I was on a morpine pump for the first day and was allowed to press the button every 10 minutes if I wanted to but to my suprise I probably only used it once an hour. Again, I think that had a lot to do with the surgeon and how good he was. The worst pain that I felt was when I first tried to get out of bed to walk... WOW... It was like my stomach was ripping open. My weight on the incisions really hurt, but I pushed though and it seemed that every time I got up to walk was a little better. I really didn't notice any internal pain until day 3 when my sleeve started "cramping" when I tried to eat or drink or really just about any time it wanted to. I was told that it was normal and would go away... and it did. Day 4 was better and by the middle of week 2 the cramping was all gone. Every day was better and better with the incision pain and I would say that they felt completely better by the end of week 2 post op. Hope this helps, feel free to ask me anything. Gene

Eating too often

I wish I was allowed a protein shake. My doctor told me that I am not allowed any more protein shakes. I did find a protein bar that is only 180 calories, 19 grams of protein and only 2 grams of sugar. The bars taste really great. I think they are called pure protein. I found them in my store's nutrician center.

Eating too often

I'm in the same boat. I am stuck. Has taken me 4 months to lose 10 pounds. While that is still better than gaining and I am grateful for that, I feel as if I should be doing better. All I want to really be is 199 and I got 30 pounds to go. Seems my body has given up no matter what I do to try and jump start things. I set the 199 goal for myself coming from a all-time highest weight of 368 (abaout 10 years ago) and 300 on surgery day 1/19/07. I'm not ready to be finished yet. Getting a fill on 5/27. Hopefully will do some good.
18. Butler, I see we were banded within a week of each other. I too have only lost 24 lbs. Most in the first 3 weeks and last 6 weeks. I plateaued between Mid December and late March. 5 fills for me and I go in Friday for fill 6. Hoping to get a small one to tweak the band so I'm in the green zone, I hope. My Doc was quite laid back on what we eat after surgery so I never had to endure 600 calorie days. Since it was Xmas he allowed me to eat normally but within reason and try to steer clear of sugars. I went into this with the fantasy I'd be losing 8-10 lbs a month. I thought I'd be down 50-60 lbs by summer but that's a wasted dream now. I believe I'd still have this surgery had I known then what I know now. I just wish I would have known about bandster hell and how many damn fills I'd need to get to the green zone? Those many days of frustration January-March were agonizing. tmf

PreOp diet advice

I agree to trust your doctor. My doc had me do the pre-op diet for 10 days. I followed it faithfully as he said the operation goes easier with the liver having shrunk some of the fat out of it. The pre-op diet helps your liver metabolize some of its fat stores so it shrinks. The liver is large and covers the stomach in a floppy way. The shrinkage helps the surgeon reach the stomach without nicking it. The surgeon needs to concentrate on the stomach as it tends to twist or turn slightly making the removal its own challenge. The surgeon doesn't need to try and keep the liver out of the way while he is concentrating on all that, or partially worrying about nicking the liver.

Click Protein Powder

I found a treasure at Price Chopper. It is "TopCare" whey protein. I like the vanilla because I can do a lot with it. I have added: vanilla and one equal, any flavor xtract one one equal, instant coffee and one equal, SF chocolate syrup and one equal, vanilla and cinnamon and one equal, or one banana, some vanilla and one equal. I even added rootbeer xtract, a dab of vanilla, and one equal and had a rootbeer float. It is reasonably priced ( less than $10./lb.), has 110cal, 4 carbs, 3 sugar, and 20g protein. I have a soy allergy and can handle the wee bit that is in this product--wayyyy at the end of ingredients. "Try it. You may just like it!!!" Valentina
21. I am 32 years old and have decided to have the sleeve surgery. After, having my sister begging me to have a weight loss surgery.I would always start the process and then i would quit. I have been overweight for about 10 yrs now...In August my husband cousin thought about having surgery and when she went they denied her due to she didnt have any health issues and wasnt overweight...anyways so she thought about me and brought the information to me. Well after reveiwing the information i decided to make a appointment. I saw the video and had been to seminars before. So my first appt was September 21, 2011. I thought this is a new journey for me. I was very nervous took my sister in law with me. After being there i decided i want to do it. Next step was nutritionist and mental doctor. on Sept 28 2011. Due to having gone to my first appt and they told me to drink plenty of water...i said ok no problem...yeah right i loved to drink soda and it was going to be hard. But i did it....I went to my appt on Sept 28, 2011 and the following day had labs,,,waiting on response i was getting a little upset. on wed Oct 19 2011 they called me to let me know that my doctor was leaving the practice and if i wanted to wait until he establish his practice of do my surgery earlier. i said earlier...so I will be sleeved on Oct 27, 2011.....a little scared and nervous. But as well excited to a new life, i thank my husband cousin for the supporting me and my family and my husband for being there for me before the surgery and i know he will be there after....will keep posted.

7 Months Out and 100 lbs. Down

Thanks, Ladies! @Swizzly- I don't consider myself a "slow" loser overall, I was really referencing the last few months where I've only lost 8-10 lbs a month versus the months I was losing 20+. I feel VERY fortunate in how quickly I've dropped the weight.

Back To The Surgeons

First thank you for reading my blog. I hope to help others with information that I am digging up on the Gastric sleeve. A few months ago, I decided to go back to the bariatric surgeon because I am not loosing weight. I suspect its because of my Thyroid, the fact that I live with my ex, something deep in my brain and that I hate to exercise. Not to mention I am in Arizona where it so freakin hot. I have already gone through the 6 months of Dr supervised weight loss. So when I went in today, I was told that I just needed another psych eval and pre- op labs. Good! The doctor suggested the sleeve as the gastic band's failure rate is 50% and going higher. I agreed to the sleeve. The thing I am concerned about is long term effects of the sleeve. Not 5 or even 10 years from now but 25 to 30 years. So, I started digging into what could possibly happen. I am doing this to make my life better. I just want to be sure that I am making the right decision. You know, all of those women who silicone breast implants thought they were safe. Now they are having chronic problems. I dont want chronic problems. So, here we go. What I already know. The stomach will be reduced by 80%. The spincter ( tho opening to the stomach) will still be intact. The stomach will still have the ability to digest food, move and absorb vitamins. Although, It will produce less acid and absorb less vitamins and can form ulsers easily. Hense, the no anti-inflamatories. The surgeon will not do the sleeve on anyone who is already being treated for gastric reflux as rhe procedure will make it so much worse. In addition, even if you haven't had reflux you may develop it around the 5-6 year. The surgeons believe this is due to the internal pressure of the stomach and the weakened fibers of the stomach walls. So... if you are worried look up GERD. If it gets too bad, the doctor will ask you to get a RNY or bypass, as they will releave the pain. Which leads to... looking up everything about these procedures. Well, this is enough tonight. I will be back with more concrete info and websites.
24. today it was a success I lost a total of 19 pounds so far . my surgeon said I can work out and I can eat regular food long as I get all my Proteins and nothing bigger than the size of a white bread sandwich quantity wise. lucky me I get to skip the puree phase unlike some people instead of having 5 incisions I had to have 7 due to having my hernia patched and have a piece of my stomach taken out due to acid reflux
25. What is a pouch test? When do I need to do one? I am 10 months post RNY and am very happy with115 lbs lost, but of course it is starting to slow down a bit, and I find myself starting to feel (or is it "think?") hungry again. I want to loose another 30 lbs and don't want to "fall off the wagon" at this point. I am still so thankful for this surgery and the drs/staff/family that are supporting me!!!! Love my new life! I want these habits to STICK, and I know that means I have to continue to WORK the program. Just needed to hear from someone out there, I haven't been on in a while. Hope all of you are well.
