  1. im the other way, im 28 now, and when i was 12-13 yrs, i was started on drugs for epilepsy, which have a great side effect of weight gain, and of course the more you weigh the more drugs you need, great being a teenager at an all girls high school, nothing was said, but im sure there were comments behind my back, plus im an emotional eater, before high school i was a normal i guess size, many 5 kg heavier than everyone else my age, but the drugs are for the rest of my life. if anyone questions you, simply a)your on a diet b)your really sick, and cant eat much c)stuff on your mind d)just tell them, and ask them to respect your privacy were i work there are 120 nurses, most to almost nearlly all know, which i dont care, i had people saying best of luck and good for you for doing it, even compliments after 5kg, shocked, at 116kg, the only difference i see is that the stretch marks are more white as apposed to red, if people have issues, thats their problem, its your life, your body, especially your life!! they may even have a back hand comment about the band, saying its lasy or taking the easy way out, its crap, i was thinking about a lapband, and the parents said do alot of research but they are behind me 100%, so from thinking that they only eat a tomato, to finding out its a massive life change and they have to work much harder than other people on diets its only if you lost too much weight and looked gaunt around the face they might ask about drugs, but stay healthy and she'll be right sus

    What motivates you?

I thought it would be good to see what others use as motivation. Of course the scale is a big motivation, but I like using other things as well. My goal weight is just too far away for me to even imagine it as a reality some day. Examples of things I use as motivation:  I keep a piece of clothing near the front of the closet that I would like to fit in next. One that is just a little too tight to wear in public. I try it on once a week and when it fits, wear it ! I stopped wearing my wedding rings a couple years ago because of my weight gain. I try them on once a week. They are still a little too tight for comfort, but when they fit, I will wear them again ! I love my rings and will be so happy to have them on again ! I am currently in "Banster Hell" , but am trying to take off 2 more pounds before my next fill appointment ( when I'm sure they will have me step on the scale) on the 25th. Please share things you use as motivation.

Lucky #7 are still going strong !!!

This is worth posting here... Here are some snippets from recent posts on the Too Much On Her Plate blog. Click the links to read more! There will be a place to share your comments, thoughts and ideas at the end of each post. 1. Podcast: Why Smart Women Struggle with Weight Loss Last week, my friend Scott Tousignant invited me to record a podcast for his blog. The topic was Why Smart Women Struggle with Weight Loss. We covered a lot of important material, including emotional eating, tips for helping busy women trying to manage their weight while juggling everyone else’s needs, and the mindsets that can sabotage weight loss attempts. If you have 20 minutes, I strongly recommend you take a listen. 2. What Could You Do in 100 Days? I received an email this morning alerting me to the fact that there are exactly 100 days left until the end of the year. What a great time to assess where we are with our health, our personal and professional goals, and to ask how we want to spend the final 100 days of 2009. Are there changes you would like to see with your eating, your weight, or your fitness? Would you like to readjust your life balance? How would you like to spend the next 100 days of your life? For many, the holidays—and all that comes with them—will be here before we know it. (Stay tuned, you’ll be hearing more from me about this.) What would you like to do differently this holiday season? 3. The Great Plate Experiment: Week 1 Week one of the plate downsizing experiment is officially over. We’ve moved the old tired chipped dishes out of our kitchen and are now eating off pristine, white 10-inch plates (9.75-inches actually), just like Brian Wansink recommends. As you may recall, the author of Mindless Eating and his team have done research on plate size and food intake and found that simply reducing your plate size from 12-inches to 10-inches could result in an 18 pound weight loss for the average American. I promised I’d report back in and I’m here to tell you that the results so far are promising. 4. Do You Have Time to Stop Overeating? Do you have the time to stop overeating? To take control of emotional eating? To get on track with your healthy lifestyle goals? Lately I’ve been encountering many women who tell me they don’t. I’ve been hearing from women who are incredibly frustrated with their eating habits, their weight gain, their lack of progress on important health goals. I’ve talked to women who fear their family history of diabetes or heart disease. I’ve talked to women who’ve even had weight loss surgery and are terrified because they are seeing the weight they’ve lost start to creep back. I’ve also talked with too many women who have put some aspect of their life “on hold” until they can start losing weight. Their struggles with food and emotional eating or overeating are something they think about every day. 5. Free Teleseminar: One Minute Plan for Dealing With Challenges How many times have you set a goal or started down a path towards change only to fall off track because life got too hectic, you got busy, and your plan fell off the radar? How often do you feel so busy that you aren’t even sure HOW to slow down? Do you sometimes feel you don’t even have time to think let alone create a plan for success? Slowing down is hard. Stopping and listening to yourself is hard. Being mindful of where you want to go is hard. What if I told you that there is a one minute plan that could start to make these things easier? I’m thrilled to be interviewing Stacey Mayo, The Dream Queen, and the creator of The One Minute Meditation™. on Thursday, September 17 (that's tomorrow!) Our Topic: The One Minute Plan for Dealing with Overwhelm, Stress and other Life and Business Challenges 6. Business Travel and Healthy Eating October will be a travel-rich month for me and I’ve been busy this morning firming up some travel plans. Booking an airline ticket is high on my list of “not fun” activities, as is the actual airline travel. Travel days seem to get longer and longer–and then there’s the food. Maybe it’s boredom, the stress of flying, or just being out of my routine, but I get hungry the minute I get on a plane. Without pre-planning, I’m likely to be stuck with unsatisfying junk food (or nothing at all). Does traveling tend to knock your healthy eating plans for a loop? 7. How to Make Time for Fitness “How do I create a fitness program that will last—when I’m time crunched, stressed, and overwhelmed?” This is a question I’m asked all the time: “How can I fit it all in? I know I should exercise regularly but I just don’t have the time/motivation/resources/energy to do it.” Consistent exercise is a big challenge for many women. Whether you are a busy professional, a solopreneur working from home, or you are home juggling the needs of small children, consistent exercise can be a difficult habit to start AND a challenge to maintain. 8. Is Night Eating Sabotaging Your Weight Loss? The after-dinner hours are a prime time for overeating, emotional eating, boredom eating, and eating out of tiredness. Not only do the calories add up, preliminary research may support the theory that our bodies actually put on more weight from calories eaten at night. 9. Personal Health Care Reform It’s mid- September. If you’ve been telling yourself all summer that you’re “waiting ‘til September” to take better care of yourself . . . you’ve just run out of excuses. 10. Tooting Our Own Horns I see it over and over again, and okay–I live it too. We may be smart, we may be strong, we may be very good (or think we are) at doing a million things at once, but most of us aren’t very good at giving ourselves credit (dare I say, indulging ourselves in our just desserts?).

    Do have Mirena?

I've been reading some old post on those of you that have Mirena for heavy bleeding. I'm wondering if there is anyone that it didn't help with this problem? Has anyone had weight gain since getting put in? Have you noticed a change in how fast your losing weight since you had it put in? And, this may be awkward...but how do you check the"threads"? I've looked on the Mirena website and can't find that...it says your healthcare provider will show you how? Do you check the threads monthly? One of the older post someone states that her partner didn't like nuva ring because he could feel it? Has anyone had there partner tell them they can feel it? I've had my tubes tied since 1990.....never had any reason to give bc a second thought.... there are so many different choices now. I was only on the pill for 3 years before I had my daughter and not quite 3 years after...same pill both times and weight gain was the only problem I had with it. So, that's my excuse for asking dumb questions...naive. Ruth
  5. Riley I am really close to stess leave. I am on a waiting list to see a psychiatrist though!! 2 months so it won't happened real soon. Seriously I might not have insurance by than.......but I could easily get stress leave at this point. We have two people in our office out..........seriously someone died this week in our office.....she got laid off Friday and dead monday morning..........she was stressing big time.........they don't know what caused it but stress didn't help......another lady out with a stroke. She ended up in the hospital two hours after her pink slip..........of course all overweight and health issues before........I am glad I at least have some weight off me and I am feeling better physically..........I don't want to end up on stress leave if I can help it!! Maybe whe the dust settles if I am still so stressed out........... I made sure I got the Celexa today. Asked Dr. Baggs he said he couldn't do it. But I chased my PCP down and diagnosed myself!! LOL. I know what I needed to say to get it done today. I wanted Paxil but ok I am gonna try this other one cause it is suppose to NOT cause weight gain which is always my concern. Effexor did nothing but bloat me up so I stopped................50 is six months ah no thank you!! I know the kids are not my responsiblity. But if one dies I get fired immediately. And I can be sued. We were told to get liability insurance this week cause things are gonna get crazy and the county can't defend/protect us against personal lawsuits......everyone is gearing up for the worst. I started the Celexa tonight. Still on the BP meds too. I have been having heart pain all week and still the light headedness. I was home from work yesterday. I think the fainting has alot to do with all the ups and downs at work and the frantic pace we are trying to keep.............not getting enough sleep and my house is a daiaster right now!! Letting that go...... Found out today the job I applied for is in my mom's unit so I can't get hired. I have to wait until another position comes up. My mom and I can't work for the same supervisor.............but hopefully something opens up in November in a different unit.......... I have a three day weekend and I need it!!! Than training next week Mon-Wed and than Thrusday a group fill. So tomorrow and next Friday are my last days at my current office. Suppose to get my reassignement letter on Friday than my forlough letter on the 25th. We are going to forloughs two days a week starting November 8.............. Going to bed. I am not on as much cause I am to tired but once I get my second wind or the Celexa kicks in.........:-) I will be back online more!!

    Fatigue

Have you ever had a sleep study? I just completed my second night of testing where I got to wear the CPAP machine to help me breathe. I didn't get but 5 hours of sleep(in a lab with wires attached to me everywhere and a hose attached to my face for the first time) but the quality of sleep was great. Today was the first day in years that I did not have to take a short 30 minute nap about 4:00. I get my machine for home next week, and while I dread wearing it, I hope that it will give me the improved quality of life while I am awake to be worthwhile. I have felt fatigue for years, even with 8 hours of sleep every night. What I didn't know was that I was waking up between 300 and 350 times a night and never got a full nights sleep. I don't know if this is your case, but sleep deprivation is going to cause fatigue, irritability, weight gain, hormone imbalance, heart disease, and more. I am not an expert, just on my second day of learning about it, but my experience today is making me a little more hopeful. Bill
  7. Hi Ann, I am 58 years old, had my lap band surgery on 12-18-08 and have lost 45 lbs without any weight gained back. I have lost very slowly, I am sure because of my age and that I have learned how to work around my band but I can sincerely tell you that I would have the surgery many times over because of Dr. Francis, Orange Coast Memorial Hospital and Staff and the results I have had with the band. Most people lose faster than me but that is because they follow the diet and exercise plan exactly and I admittedly do not.:tt1:
  8. Hi All, My surgery date of 9/21/09 has been postponed. My initial consultation was in July and the surgeon told me to lose 40 pounds. Two weeks later my husband had a heart attack (hospitalized for 8 days) and I coped the only way I really knew how.... I gained 10 pounds. So, fast forward to 9/7/09, when I started Optifast in prep (2 wks) for surgery...I completed 10 days of the liquied diet and lost 14 #s...but only 4, according to the dr due to the 10 pound weight gain. So, I've been out off until 10/20/09 so I can lose 30 more pounds. I'm glad the surgeon is being firm but I also feel depressed about it. My husband is fine, btw, and I feel less stressed now. So, I guess I continue to diet and now I will also exercise. Please, say something nice to me. I haven't cried yet but I'm kinda close to it...

    Unexpected Side-Effect -- GALL STONES!!

The weight gain is probably just from the fluids they give you when you're in the hospital. I know I got at least 3 bags of fluid when I was in there a month ago. My pain was in the center of my chest/stomach area, a few inches below the bra line. I thought it was just gas pain and I had at least 5 episodes, probably more like 8, over several months with pain lasting 30 minutes at a time and suddenly stopping. The last episode I had was the worst because a stone had gotten stuck and I was in pain for 24 hours before I finally broke down and went to the ER. I'm a real trooper when it comes to pain but after being at a high pain level for long periods of time I start having trouble dealing with it mentally and have an emotional breakdown. lol So after having a short crying spell I picked myself up got dressed and went down to the hospital. lol I lost a few pounds after surgery because I had no appetite and could only eat very little amounts. I was out of work a week (desk job) and had to take it easy for a while. It wasn't that bad of an experience - better than if I kept having those episodes I was enduring!

Birth Control Pill and Weight Loss

I have trouble remembering to take pills, so my DR recommended Nuva Ring. I've been using it for two months & love it! I have not had any weight gain or swelling.

    10 minutes, 10 months, 10 years

Monday, September 14, 2009 10 minutes, 10 months, 10 years Talked with my 7th grade girls group about the 10,10,10 principle, which is a way of helping you make decisions. We make decisions just about every moment and we need to ask ourselves what would the results be, good and bad, 10 minutes from now, 10 months from now, and 10 years from now. I thought about how that applied to food and how something that looks good right now and would satisfy our craving right now (or maybe not) ends up cumulatively as weight gain 10 months down the road which 10 years down the road puts us on the path of high blood pressure, high, cholesterol, high blood sugar, and prone to heart disease, strokes, Alzheimers, breast and colon cancer, Dr.s' bills, food bills, wardrobe bills, loss of income from not being able to work as well or at all, shame, etc.,etc., etc. Of course, for my kids, the consequences of bad decisions now, like just going outside and walking around at night in high risk neighborhoods, can be fatal. Told them I didn't want to be visiting their graves, or their jail cells, or them struggling to raise 3 babies from 3 different fathers. None of them thinks any of that could ever happen to them, but they were almost all telling about dangerous situations with kids showing them guns, bangers trying to sweet talk them, predators trying to talk them into their vehicles, and they find it very exciting. The part of their brain that foresees the potential consequences of their actions is not fully developed until the mid-20s, but stupid actions we all took when we were young didn't usually have the severe consequences that my 7th graders are more likely to experience. Some of these consequences for bad choices didn't exist. HIV, getting shot, crack cocaine, meth--its not like there weren't drugs available but they weren't so instantly addictive. Teenage pregnancy existed but it wasn't as widespread, nor was it an accepted way of life. I'm hoping to give these kids a tool, 10-10-10 to get these kids to think beyond immediate gratification. 10 minutes from now, 10 months from now, 10 years from now. Puts things in perspective. For me, for them.

  13. With a long history of diets and yo-yo loss/weight gains, now BCBS wants me to do it again for 6 months by their stringent rules. Then if you succeed, and I know I will, to fall below the qualifying BMI, you do not get approval. You repeat the same cycle gaining it back later on. A person would be better off to fail at the diet for 6 months. BCBS would rather pay years and ultimately high amounts towards claims related to the serious consequences of obesity than help a customer with a courageous decision to seek a surgical weight loss alternative. That doesn’t even make good business sense. Of course it does if you die - they win.

Rationale behind not drinking before you eat??

I also drink before I eat until a few minutes before the next meal. This is acceptable to my band surgeon. Like RestlessMonkey and others, it is not really a question of whether or not you drink while you eat or immediately afterwards. It hurts too much and sometimes liquid comes right back up. Hmmm. I drank soda during pregnancy because I had no fill and was entirely open. I ended up with a slipped band and dilated pouch. My band had to be replaced one week ago. The surgeon said the dilation was caused partially by soda and partially by having a slip for an extended period. The gas expands in your pouch and the gas doesn't escape fast enough. Yes it escapes eventually, just not quickly enough. If you have read very many posts regarding banding, most people complain about gas problems post banding. It is difficult to relieve it and there is a lot of it . . . and that is when you are not drinking soda. Throw soda on top of it and it makes sense you might just have a problem. If you do get banded, gas is one of the first things that will give you problems and you might look at this discussion differently at that time. You would think that, like liquid, gas should also be able to flow back and forth fairly easily but experience for most of us with bands tells us different. Could all of those surgeons possibly be wrong??? There are many points upon which different surgeons disagree . . . but the "no soda" rule seems to be uniform across most. Many of us decide to pick and choose which rules we want to follow . . . unfortunately some of us suffer dire consequences for doing so. I agree on checking on the rationale behind some rules but I think this one is better followed than ignored from personal experience. For your own sake and the health of your band-to-be, please be careful about what you choose to do or not do post banding. Too many of us make our own decisions to not follow some of the band rules and either don't lose, don't lose as much as we want or cause irreversible damage to our bands. Is she holier-than-thou because she has a different opinion than yours post banding? I guarantee you that your feelings on a lot of subjects pertaining to banding will change dramatically once you have the experience of being banded yourself. It happens to all of us since experience is one of our greatest teachers. In my opinion, I don't think Crystal Light if really much different nutritionally than soda. However, post banding you are supposed to avoid soda due to pouch dilation so CL is indeed a better choice than soda given dietary restrictions. Studies have also shown that sugar substitutes can lead to weight gain in some people due to a multitude of reasons, but that would apply to both diet soda, CL and a ton of other beverages. Good luck with banding.

    Shrinking Violets - Part 5!

It really seems odd for you to say New Orleans is just 4 hours away!! Didn't really do anything today!!! I had two days off and accomplished nothing. I switched depression meds around the first of the year, and am wondering if that has caused my weight gain.

    Second Fill

Well I went into the office and got my second fill today. Not nearly as traumatic as the first one, not as painful and not so much bleeding everywhere. I saw the NP and she only gave me a touch of a fill, .6cc. That seems small to me since my first fill was a full 2.6cc. She told me to wait 2 weeks and then touch base with how it was going. Since I'm self pay all visits are free for me for the first year, so I don't mind going in again if need be. The second fill puts me at a total of 6.2cc in the AP band. My Dr office has me fill out a diet summary and the NP was pretty stern with me saying that I was eating too much soft foods and that I need to eat a more substantative fare. I guess this will commence after my two days of liquids and two days of solids... I was pretty unhappy since I've only lost 5lbs in the last 3 weeks. The NP said that too much soft/mushy food = weight gain. I'm syncing up my i pod right now as I've started to jog around the neighborhood pretty successfully. My neighbors think I'm a riot. Until later!

    Excited/happy finallly!

I know, people for some odd reason don't like to comment about weight loss, weight gain yes, loss no. . . I remember I had lost 100 lbs about 4-5 years ago, my mom, who hadn't seen me in over 2 years came to visit and didn't say a thing. . then just before she left from her visit she turned to me and said "don't lose too much, it's not healthy" . . . thanks mom. . .

GOOD JOB!! Size 10, oh how I want to see that size again. Currently at a 16/18 (was at a 20/22). I know that I too will have tummy issues after having 2 c-section and the weight gain. I'll tackle that when I get to my ultimate goal. Thanks for posting, it’s great to hear good news!

Home Thread...for the thread homeless :)

I'm BACK!! Hi ladies! We had a good time. It rained the entire weekend but the company was fantastic (and the food, shame on me). We did go on the 4 wheeler and it was fun  Kat called me while I was in Louisiana! I was so surprised! Made me feel good. Josie...I am right there with ya on the blue bell being the best! That stuff should be illegal, right? It is responsible for most of my weight gain! Stress, enchiladas and Blue Bell. Suzanne you are doing fantastic. It is hard with stress eating for me too but you have done so well. We can all just take this one day at a time, right? JEN!!! You go girl! I am so glad you had fun on your date. Of course someone wants to go out with you, you are a beautiful girl! :tongue2: I look forward to your call! I go for my yearly ob/gyn visit tomorrow. I dont wanna go because I love my dr and he will be disappointed in me and I do not wanna disappoint him. I have to go though, I have put it off long enough. Hi Cari  Have a great evening everyone!
  24. I still get surprised every time I hear someone in favor of bypass...partially because of my own thoughts on it, but also because I feel like there are so many advantages to the band. I will admit that the fast weight loss that results from RNY is tempting. But that's, to me, the only advantage over the band. Again, maybe it's just me, but have you noticed that a LOT of bypass patients LOOK like bypass patients? I feel like they always have a different look to them...like a partially full bag or something. I would consider the slower weight loss with the band a plus, actually. It gives your body more time to catch up with the weight loss. Furthermore, have you heard that bypass patients have approximately one year to lose the weight they're going to lose? And typically, after that year is up, there is at least some uptick in weight...the graphical curves I've seen show the band as a slow but steady loss that eventally surpasses bypass because bypass patients typically gain at least a little (if not all) weight back. Here's a sample of my "pro" list for the band, if it helps: 1. MUCH less invasive of a procedure 2. Reversible, if needed 3. Fewer complications 4. No malabsorption problems or Vitamin deficiency 5. No dumping 6. Corrects overeating behavior 7. LIFELONG modifications to increase nutritional intake when needed (eg, pregnancy, endurance training) and decrease when needed (eg, weight gain, slow weight loss) I think my biggest plus on the band side is that it's a TOOL. I see it as something to help me lose weight now--slowly but surely--and help me maintain over the long term. Of course, it's a personal decision, and we know that RNY works. I know that, for me, the band is better because I need more help with portions, etc. I love that I could have all the restriction removed by removing saline...but then fill it back up if I slip. My mind has wandered over to bypass only when I crave that quick fix (not that it's easy...but it's definitely quicker). Good luck with your decision!!

    United Healthcare Denial?

Hi. I am new to posting on this site, but not browsing LOL! Anyway, I also have UHC, and I checked online to see that my insurance does allow gastric bypass surgery so I'm assuming that they allow the lap band. Anyway, like others, mine says I have to have a BMI of 40, but I only have a BMI of 37. I know I am getting on up in there into high cholesterol and I believe I have some form of sleap apnea. I have not been to the doctor in over a year, but the doctor I used to go to was trying to help me lose weight with pills. I did loose about 30 lbs. but gained it all back. I don't think it's been 5 years since I had been seeing that dr. but it would be close. I am wondering if there is any chance I could be approved or should I not waste my time. I know I will probably try anyway, I just hate to be shot down. I want to stop the weight gain before I get too big. I know I'm big now, but I also know it can get a lot worse.
