  1. I Wanna Be a Loser

    Manitoba anyone?

Hey Fergieis Glad to hear your recovery is going fine - sounds like you are on of the lucky ones who got an easier recovery - I was still getting gas pains up to a month after my surgery. Don't sweat about the weight gain - you are going to be entering the next phase - the notorious "LAP-BAND® hell". You feel great and fine enought to push through and are excited to get started and see the results. However keep in mind that your insides just went through surgury that takes 4-6 weeks to recover from internally. If you are living in Wpg - they probably left a little fill in the band to see how your body reacts, but not enough to make a big difference so that you would notice it. LAP-BAND® Hell begins as you start to see the weight come off, then you plateau and bounce up and down a few pounds and if you lose less than a certain amount of pounds, you get a fill and if lose more, then its 'thanks for coming out - see you next month" and so on, until you hit the "sweet spot" - the correct amount of fill that allows you to lose to your goal weight. Everyone is different. And yes, it is typical to gain right after surgery - remember you were on a liquid diet for 2 weeks or more and light foods afterwards. What I did was replace the huge lunch meal I used to have with a broth Soup (eg veggie or chicken noodle), 1 oz of cheese and crackers dipped in the soup (they get soft) and Water to drink. For Breakfast, I do the carnation breakfast shake and water between lunch and breakfast. A piece of fruit when I get home to tide me over to supper. Supper is a normal meal - protien plus veggies and a reward at the end of the night - one of those 100 calories snack things. you are the first person I have heard of who likes the liquid chalk drink that those Medi protien shakes. Have you tried adding fruit to them - eg; bananna to the chococate - strawberries to the vanilla etc - this may fill you up further as well and prevent cravings. Diet Coke - avoid any carbonated bevvies for at least the first 4 weeks and my advise would be if you want to try - only 2 or 3 slow sips to see how your body reacts - the gas in the coke can give you horrible pains that you will regret if you try too much. I cannot do Diet Coke, it is absolute agony and I will not ever do it again - Club Soda and Lime juice is my bevvie of choice and the only carbonated drink I can do - only 1 and only about once or twice a week but never more than one. Some doctors recommend that carbonated bevs are cut out completely due to the gas. Okay - off the soapbox. BTW - keep us posted on the fight with the gov't and if you get anywhere. CHeers IWBAL
  2. AL- I am already feeling some hesitation in responding to your comment, but I feel that there should be some clarification on a few things. So obviously if we are waiting for approval then we have seen our surgeons, done psych evals, etc. Those seem to be the most basic requirements for everyone that I have spoken with. With that said, we (or at least I) know that the lap band is not a magic wand that waves the fat away. Honestly, if it was I wouldn't have thought about and researched it for over 2 years before making a decision. Secondly, I feel like there will always be cravings and head hunger and all the triggers that caused the weight gain everyday. But you know what I have really found from all of the people on here is that the lap band is a tool to help you so that you are not running into battle without a weapon. While the throwing up and being uncomfortable may not seem to be a good reason for you to avoid cravings, it is for me. When I do have unbearable cravings I will vent here, just like we are now. Thank you for your input and response, but I guess I didn't appreciate the negativity you brought with it.
  3. I have been thinking about getting banded for a while now. Went to the info session back in July and got a little freaked out so decided to go to the nutritionist on my own to see if there was anything I could do to change my diet... found out I’m doing what I’m supposed to with food and exercise. Went to the Dr and got tested for just about everything that could cause weight gain (I have always been heavy but gained like 50lbs in 4 months... odd). From that I found out that I may be diabetic (second test is still being run). The whole reason I wanted to get banded and lose weight was to do it BEFORE I became 'unhealthy' (i.e. diabetes, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, ect). So Monday I decided I’m sending in my application. At 5'4 and 250lbs I know I’m a candidate... and looks like my current insurance covers surgery so I should be all good Of course Monday I also found out we have to change insurance coverage which means I have to pay WAY more out of pocket and I don’t even know if the new plan covers it:thumbdown: Hope all go well in the end though... I’m ready to live again!!!!

    Bed after eating,

Hi Marisela, are you asking bc of reflux or worried about eating before bed in relation to weight gain? I can eat whenever, and lay down and it doesn't bother me. As for weight gain, it doesnt really matter when you eat in relation to when you sleep. (of course I only get my information from health magazines and other information)...
  5. YAY! Well I am certainly always glad to kill two birds with one stone! I am 23 soon to be 24. I just got married 4 months ago. We have been together about 5 years. When we first started dating I was the "ideal" 155. I gradually and unwillingly gained slightly over 100. I suppose I was in denial for years of the gradual weight gain. However, It was always that elephant in the room! I saw my wedding photos and I was just astonished. It was almost like a slap in the face, I knew I just was so unhappy. I didn't get to have the wedding dress of my dreams because every bridal shop we went to only have sizes 4-10 to try on it felt like. I havn't told my husband yet what I am going to do. Not that I think he won't support me but more like I would love to not bring attention to something we have always know was there but yet opt not to talk about. Obesity runs in my family, my uncle and my mother definitely struggle. My Mom fortunitely had gastic bypass 6 years ago. I thank god every day I see her that she did. She is so happy and loves life and lives it to the fullest everyday! I have never seen her so happy. I wish she would have done it sooner. So I know I do not want to let it get that out of control I want to put an end to it now. As for not having a safety net. I suppose it will still be there however, you will probably learn really quick as to what it is willing to take and what it just won't. At first it's hard to get things "threw" In time in moderation I hear it's easier but simply only as a "treat" not a permanent fixation.
  6. Do you find yourself stress eating, comfort eating or even boredom eating during your workday? That's emotional eating. Emotional eating is the eating that happens when you're procrastinating tackling a difficult project, struggling with writer's block, or avoiding a difficult conversation. Emotional eating also happens when we're trying to transform our feelings-like munching mindlessly in the late afternoon in an attempt to perk up or re-motivate. Emotional eating is a major cause of weight gain, weight loss difficulties, and weight re-gain after weight loss. It can be a major issue for many busy business owners and professionals who feel like they are facing a mounting to-do list, challenging projects, financial challenges, and too-little time. Before you reach for a snack-here are three ways to avoid emotional eating during your work day and build skills and awareness that will help you take charge of future challenges with emotional eating. 1. Identify Emotional Eating Lots of emotional eating happens without paying a lot of attention. When we eat without our full awareness we eat more, we often make poor choices, and we don't even fully taste and enjoy what we are eating. Don't put food where you can reach for it mindlessly. Use strategies that maximize your awareness of what you are doing-don't eat while you are working-in fact, set a personal policy of not multitasking at all while you eat. If you are feeling cravings or urges to eat that aren't hunger-driven, say what you know about what's going on-actually say it out loud (and without judgment). "I'm not physically hungry but all I can think about are those brownies in the kitchen. Something is triggering me to think about eating even though I don't need fuel right now." You might feel silly, but don't skip this step. If you are surrounded by other people and you can't really talk to yourself, pull out a piece of paper and write it down. Don't worry if you don't know anything more than "I'm not really hungry, but I want to eat." 2. Be Curious About Your Craving That urge to eat probably didn't pop up out of nowhere. The five minutes (or less) it takes to stop and explore what's going on will be worth it. See if you can identify what your craving is really about. Pull out a journal or type on your computer for a few minutes (yes, I know you're busy. Just take a FEW minutes). If you can, you might want to go for a short walk while you think. Why is eating suddenly so appealing? What was happening before you were thinking of it? What would you be doing or thinking of if you weren't focused on eating? What makes this hour different from one when food wasn't calling to you? Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and notice what comes to you. If you figure anything out, be direct with yourself and put it into words. "I'm not hungry but I'm focusing on eating candy. I just realized it's because I'm really stressed out about this presentation I need to get done and I'm worried about whether it will be good enough" If you hit pay dirt here, you'll now find you have a different problem. The problem isn't really about eating or not eating, it's figuring out how to take care of yourself and the feelings or issues you just identified. Sometimes, simply identifying the real cause of your hunger will be enough to shift how you feel. Sometimes you'll need to move to a strategy that addresses the real need or issue. 3. Create Options It's much easier not to turn to food if you have a plan for what you can do instead. Take the information you have gathered and start developing a list of everything you can think of that you could do to take care of that feeling or need in addition to eating. It's not about NOT eating, it's about figuring out what you can do INSTEAD. Take a break, switch tasks, drink a glass of Water, go wash your hands and put on lotion, commit to spending fifteen minutes on the task you are avoiding....You get the idea. Put the list somewhere where you can see it and can add ideas as you think of them. Don't censor your ideas for being unrealistic or impossible. Write down every strategy (big or small) you can think of to do in response to worry or anxiety or tiredness or boredom (or whatever you have identified). Make a commitment to try two of those things, this week when the emotional eating urge hits and tweak your list as you go. 7. Thank you so much! I'm probably going to look into these doctors when the time comes. I think I'd rather pay to have it done than go with Kaiser. I'm very comfortable with my Health Plan. I'm still talking a ways down the road but that's ok. I can't give up my band until it's run its course either. It is helping lots with weight gain prevention if anything. I've already come a long way. Who knows? In time more insurances will start to pick up on this procedure. I don't think I'll ever get the Rouxen-Y though. I'm not knocking it at all, I just already have nourishment issues. I'm sure that surgery would be bad news for me.

    Never Again...

Shame on your Dr. My Dr. told me to EXPECT a weight gain before my first fill. He needs to be educated in more than one area!!!!!
  9. Whoop Whoop, post holiday weight gain has now gone and its back to tackling the last stone or two. I'm hoping to lose 1 stone by christmas. Freckles, I'm so pleased that your mum is getting stonger, it'll be a weight off your mind when you are on your holls. Love mmm
  10. I had to gain 10 lbs and I really needed to do it because then as part of insurance I had to lose 10 percent and I don't know if I could have done the math as to how many quarters to remove as I went along the 6-month path...:tongue2: Math is not my strong forte...so I just ate and ate and ate and then you know how usually if you have a temporary weight gain, it's easy to lose...NOT this time. I really then had to struggle to get it back off. Had I been independently wealthy, I would have taken my 13k down to Houston to my daughter's doctor and not worried about the 6-month plan, but I also felt like I needed the follow-up care because of comorbidities..So, yes, it's a slippery slope the insurance companies have you on. Ring Sizes

I lost 18lbs pre-op and 20lbs since surgery on 8/11/09. My wedding set has gotten very loose on me. I've already had mine sized twice; once when it was purchased and then again due to weight gain. I just picked up a ring guard from the jeweler for now as I want to wait until I have lost all the weight I want to before getting it sized again.
  12. Dr. Schulman

    Ask Dr. Schulman...

A dog ear excision is a relatively small procedure that can be done in office with local anesthesia. Most plastic surgeons will remove this without charging the patient because it is really a "touch up" from the abdominoplasty. They may or may not submit it to insurance, but will likely not get any reimbursement from this "cosmetic" procedure. I do not think that weight gain contributed to this dog ear.
  13. I am astounded at how many bandsters have gained so little weight during pregnancy. Well, I can tell you that for me, the lap band has been no match for pregnancy hormones which have kept me eating constantly up until this point (14 weeks). I have definitely gained a good amount of weight already and I still have my fill. I don't have much restriction although you'd think I would. Still, I don't want to develop a complex about it, so I'm trying not to make it a big deal. I am eating out of genuine physical hunger, not for emotional issues (which was the cause of my weight problems before)-- so I believe in doing what my body tells me to do. I know that after my pregnancy, when all these hormones are out of my system and I have my normal energy back, I'll be back on track eating my tiny meals and working out like crazy. But I just refuse to obsess about weightloss/weight gain during pregnancy.

2-3 weeks post op and gained weight

I would put money you are experiencing water weight gain. Most of the foods you described are high in salt when you have been on an extremely limited diet.

Lucky #7 are still going strong !!!

Sounds like everyone had a good productive day! Just got back from the fill doc. Everytime I go, I just love him a little more. He actually is pretty funny and REAL. He and his wife recently got married and between them they have 11 kids, so he is still hungry for money. He did have a hard time angling the port. He pulled out what was in there. Rohre SAID he put in 2.3 cc's, there was only about 1.5 cc's. Hummm...do I feel a 'setup'. Anyway he added 0.5 cc. Then we talked about my intestinal issues. He feels pretty sure it is celiacs. DD#1 has horrid celiacs, she was so bad that her body started breaking down, teeth, etc. So I was tested about 5 years ago because it is inherited, and I test positive, but I never really thought I had it because I was fat. Well come to find out you can have celiacs and be fat. Doc says that less sever celiac can actually increase weight gain, because your intestines can't absorb complex nutrients, but it will grab onto the simple sugars. So i need to start thinking about avoiding gluten. Anyway, gave myself a B shot. I had to tell Chris, the doc, to turn around cause I couldn't do it with him watching. It was easier that I thought. I use to give my neighbor shots every week, so I have given them before, but not to myself. He also wants me to replace one meal with a super protein drink. He says the B complex with help with my focusing issues and I should think about antioxidents. So I have a lot to think about.
  16. Have you had a blood pressure medication change recently? My doc just switched me to a med without HCTZ (it depletes potassium and I struggle with low potassium). Anyway, since Saturday I'm up 6.5 pounds. Yup - you read that right! The only "good" thing is I know I'm retaining Fluid due to my medication and that it isnt a true weight gain, but boy is it frustrating to see on the scale. Obviously I have a call in to my doc to go back to my old medication and deal with low potassium as needed. Just a thought -

I hate it when people post just to post.....

Heart---I was totally unfilled when I had my TT. My band Dr. is 6 hours away---and the fear was if I suffered any nausea post op, with an incision the size of the TT incision, and such a long drive---along with the travel/blood clot issues following surgery, it was thought to be safer to do a total unfill. I never went back to get filled! I managed my weight just fine, ate like I did when I was banded---and all was well. For a year----maintained without issue, actually even lost a few more pounds. Then STRESS come on in major ways, combined with steroids, and in the blink of an eye---almost 40 pounds jumped back at me! LOL So off I went and am back with a small fill---was actually done late Spring I think. And most of the added weight is gone, but it is much harder this time it seems like! So....unfill does not mean automatic weight gain. I have heard lots of people say the unfill allowed them to eat healthier proteins and raw veggies etc. We'll be here to help keep you in line! If I get an address from Paula or her DD tomorrow, I will send it out in PM to those who want to help cheer her. My heart breaks for her. When I was dealing with my thyroid tumor I know I lived in mortal fear of coping with chemo again---to actually face it is more than I can comprehend. I am a fighter and would fight it again, I just know the crushed feeling she must be facing now. And she has let us in on the hardships she is facing financially, and her back----her plate is REALLY full right now. Ya know IF I had been born independently wealthy rather than so startlingly beautiful (LMAO) I would be right there helping. I am off to bed, I have an earache from hell.

    I'm here to help...

Saw snow in Castle Rock on this morning's news! Don't get discouraged if you have a weight gain after surgery. I think the first time I weighed was a week after surgery and I was up several pounds. But I wasn't thinking about all the swelling in my leg. The next week 3 1/2 lb loss and then 2 lb this week. And now that I am able to walk 1/2 mile at a time, I'm sure I'll continue to lose faster than I was prior to surgery. You'll do the same.

    Made it to Onederland!

Good afternoon All! I finally made it - I am down to 196 pounds - officially in ONEDERLAND!!!! I got a fill recently (that's what helped me make it) because my weight had been stuck for 6 weeks at 205. The hunger was back, I was starting to be able to eat more (and badly) and I was not ready to quit losing yet. Some friends and even a couple of family members said I was small enough - since I was now wearing size 16's and even a few 14W's, and they didn't want me to get "too thin". I really don't know what "too thin" would be for me, since I've been fighting my weight since I was 9 years old. Yep, you read that right... When I was 9, my mother took me to the doctor for a normal school physical and because she was concerned about my weight. My father and mother (God rest their souls) were both heavy. What I did not know at the time was that heart disease ran in my family and my mother was worried about the path I was on. The doctor told her (and me) that I needed to be careful about my weight gain or I would be at 200 pounds when I turned 18. Overachiever that I am, I made it at age 16...some of you will understand this - it was very HARD going through high school being overweight. My height saved me a little, but not enough. I could never wear the same clothes that my friends wore, could never seem to get the attention from the same guys that my friends talked to, etc, etc, etc. Now I'm at my lightest weight since I was 16 years old, and I'm ecstatic! :huh2: I went shopping for new pants last night, since the smallest size I had in my closet was an 18. Thank goodness for belts - I could make sure they didn't fall down, but they were really baggy! I went to Lane Bryant, because I knew they carried tall sizes pretty regularly, and since I'm 5' 11" tall, I definately NEED tall pants! I fit into their new Right Fit sizes at a Yellow 2. That means approximately a size 16, made for a body that is straighter from waist to hip. That was a revelation - I'd been buying the Red pants - sized for a body with more of a waist-to-hip difference. Getting the right size was amazing! Most pants had been baggy in the seat for me, totally not flattering, but these fit beautifully! No bagging, no sagging, and I could BREATHE in them! I'm in such a giddy state at the store, I bought two pairs of dress pants and a pair of jeans! The wonderful thing about the band is that I know I'm not done yet - I want to get down to around 165 (100 lbs lost) before I say I'm done...that, or to get off all my diabetes meds, which ever comes first. I was so happy about the new pants - I ran right home and showed my husband. His enthusiastic reaction let me know I had found the right size! I also got measured for new bras while I was there, since the store wasn't very busy. When I started this journey, I was wearing a 40K (yes, that's a K) and had to buy my bras overseas because very few places in the U.S. carried them. I left the store with a brand new size - 38DDD / 38F size prescription! :tt1: I'm not going to go hog-wild crazy buying clothes just yet...I'll get enough to carry me through, because there is definately plastic surgery in my future...I believe my true size right now (sans extra skin) would be around a 14, maybe even a 12, but I believe I need to hold my weight loss for a while before investigating plastic surgery. I'll definately post again when that process begins! If you are reading this and you're not yet banded, please do your research and make a quality decision on what's right for you. The band was definately the right choice for me! If you are reading this and you are struggling with your band, don't give up! Talk to your doctor, the nutritionist, whoever you need to in order to get the help and support you need to make the band work for you - and you have to work WITH the band. If you are making good progress and loving your banded life as I am, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! I was banded in November 08 and it's now September 09 and I've lost 69 pounds. Allowing for recovery time from surgery, my weight loss really started in January 09 - that's when I got serious. I'm planning to be at my goal weight before the end of 2009, and with the help of my doctor, my family and my friends online and offline, I know I'll make it!

i was on depo and have been for 7 years now. initally when i started the shot i had an intense nasty period which faded away as the months wore on to nothing now. the only negative side affects that i still suffer from are severe nightmares 2 weeks prior to the shot and also 2 weeks post shot. keep in mind that the hormones in depo are enough to make a woman batty and throw the mix of surgery into it, your hormones are off the chart. i think i would approach my surgeon and my gyno and see what their thoughts on the matter were though. as an aside, i have to say, i just went to see my gyno for my yearly, and she advised to get off the depo. she said she had a patient who had been on it for years and gained 100+ pounds, so now i'm switching to a non-hormone iud. i've heard this before but never had a doctor actually say it to me, and while i type this, i'm in no way trying to say my birth control was the sole reason for my weight gain. but i do have to say i honestly feel as if it helped to attribute to the whole thing. so the switch for me is just me doing everything i can possibly do to help keep this weight of as i fight the battle to loose more. :bored:
  22. I received info in my packet about where to buy them and I do wear one. In part because of my heart condition and I also added the Lapband and the serial number on it. I probably didn't need to add the number but I thought it might help alert the emergency people a little better. I also have my other medical conditions on it. I just thought it was a good idea. Most of us have conditions related to weight gain so it is a good idea to wear one if you have those conditions in my opinion. You just never know what kind of emergency may arise and what emergency personal may have to do in a pinch before you reach the hosptial. I believe the more they know the better. I had one emergency trip related to my heart condition and the first thing they did was put me in the ambulance and rip my shirt open to hook me up to all kinds of tubing, monitors and oxygen and administer drugs. I didn't have the lapband then and my heart problems had just begun but it was scary. I wasn't thinking about my other conditions that they might have needed to know about like high blood pressure etc. I was pratically unconsious. The more info they have the better during a situation like that.
  23. Katy - The weight gain is very normal. It is due to the IV's you had, the swelling, the surgical process itself, etc. Do yourself a favor and stay away from the scale while you heal if you can. Your body has been through a lot and the next month or so is a healing process. It is harder to burp after surgery, especially RIGHT after. You likely have swelling so all of your burp isn't making it through. (I'm not a doctor, that's my guess and experience from what I have felt as well). The pain could be from gas used during surgery, or it could be from the phrenic nerve (not at all unusual) if your burp has irritated your pouch. I get the pain radiating to the left shoulder when I've eaten a bite too many. That's just one way your stomach may communicate with you now. Hope this helps. Good luck and don't stress over the scale right now.
  24. I am 2 weeks post op and while things seem to be going ok...I have gained 5 pounds back this week! HOW does one gain weight when they are on an all liquid diet of less than 800 calories a day? The only thing NEW is that my General Dr. cut out my heart pill which is a diuretic, and lowered my insulin in half and cut my BP meds down 75%. Not sure why the weight gain, but it is ticking me off to no end! It is not like I am cheating and EATING something... Very discouraged at this point!

Home Thread...for the thread homeless :)

Hi Cari yum, a donut! Look at it this way, at least it wasn't a half dozen that you ate. Right? Thanks for letting me know that Dr. Phil switched networks where you are. I need to check it out because I refuse to think I wont be able to watch him anymore  Kat-ouch! I hope your leg is OK today. So, being a city girl I am not sure how much wood that is but I'll take your word that it is alot! lol Jenn-where the devil are you? I miss you sista! Hopefuly you are somewhere having so much fun that we are the last people on your mind...well, second to last! Suzanne-what is on your agenda today? I hope R&R after yesterday! Hope you are not sore this morning! Love the pics! I am so proud of you! Jane-you talk too much! lol Just joking, it is great to hear from you. What do you have planned today? Josie-how are things with you? Did you say you are in New York? Was wondering when you are coming back to Texas? It is hard to believe fall is almost here. The summer here has not been as bad this year as it normally is. Makes me wonder what the winter will be like. Well, I have a dr. appt tomorrow to see if maybe he can put me in some happy pills. I am so worried about getting something that will assist in weight gain . I have heard that some make you gain and there are some that you lose with (due to bathroom issues). I would rather deal with the bathroom issues and lose and be a happy camper. :blushing: So, what is a parent to do when the teenager in the house is deleting the browsing history on the computer after every use? My stepdaughter seems to have something to hide (again). I guess I am gonna have to maybe get some spyware. Lord, probably expensive but...if that is what it takes, so be it. I am truly about to pull my hair out. A frogs hair from sending her back to her momma...sad ain't it? But my mental health is starting to wear down along with my physical health. I have gained 20 pounds since she moved in with us in June. Ugh, so sorry to burden you all with this. Have a great day everyone!
