    Would I qualify?

Insurance companies only look at the numbers. The minimum BMI is 40, unless you have other health issues like diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea heart disease, etc. Only then can you have a BMI of 35-39. A weight loss clinic will not meet with you unless you meet that criteria. They require a brief questionnaire online before you can schedule a consultation. It has nothing to do with your waist size, your previous weight or history. It’s all about the numbers before you can get through the door.

    Food Woes

Can you eat hummus? I'm a fan (with a spoon, not on bread) And yeah, while you absolutely can eat an English muffin, you should probably only do so if you're getting adequate protein or are happy with your weight loss. Although 55lb in this time frame seems great!

    Food Woes

You shouldn’t be committing this far out. Are you eating too fast? Eating too much? Are you dumping by eating too much sugar or high processed white flour foods? Are you drinking while eating? It would be worth seeing your surgeon to discover what’s really going on. Golden rule is eat your protein first then vegetables if you ate able. Some plans say if you still have room some good multi/whole grain carbs but you likely won’t be able to especially if you are getting in your required protein first. 60g of protein a day is the usual goal. A simple google search will reveal the protein content of any meat, seafood, dairy, etc. Weigh your protein so you know how much you’re getting. Bread, rice & pasta are usually not allowed on plans because they are nutritionally poor food choices & are too filling. So a muffin would be a poor food choice & the cream cheese would provide very little protein (less than a gram for a tablespoon). Get in touch with your dietician & ask for some sample menu plans & recommended food lists as well as portion size recommendations,. You may benefit from being given macro & calorie guides as well. Rate of weight loss is individual. Some lose more quickly, others more slowly. You seem to be doing ok but factors like age, gender, starting weight, weight loss history, etc. all influence your rate of loss. But you’re happy with what you’ve achieved, and you should be, that’s the most important thing. Congrats.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Late to this group and got operated in September 2021. Starting weight was 330 lbs (152 kg) and the current weight is 264 lbs (120 kg) and down to waist size 44 from 50, which is good. In the middle of a long stall (around 5 weeks where I have not lost weight and gained and lost a few 100 grms). I do have some improvement areas and not a big fan of running or protein shakes, though I try to make some of it up with eggs and chicken but not enough I would guess. waiting for my 6 month post-op blood tests. I still believe I am another 70-80 lbs away from where I would like to be and hopefully the weight loss will start back sooner rather than later, but I am a bit worried with the length of the stall. DO look forward to hearing more positive outcomes to help inspire myself. Cheers

    Five Month Post Op Stall

First of all much congratulations for your achievement. That is very impressive. I am also not the running sort and cardio is not my favorite either. I am hoping to get back to weight training now that the doctor had indicated a 6-month post op window before doing weights. Hopefully that would help. Also, exploring perhaps starting another sport whatever the best I can - perhaps squash or tennis.

    Five Month Post Op Stall

Thank you everyone and this is much helpful learning from the experiences. I have started tracking the calories more closely and guess I am averaging between 800-1000 on most days but will be more tight about this. I understand the quality of the calories is an issue, with me being able to manage breakfasts and lunch but late evening snacking is an issue. Not much into running, so seeking alternate options - perhaps weight training or start exploring a new sport - tennis or squash whatever the best my current weight and limited mobility over the last 20 years or so allows me but will gradually take that up. Perhaps swimming. I have my fingers crossed that the weight loss re-starts and am hoping for another 70 lbs at least to reach my goal weight, though the doctor did not indicate any specific weight. Cheers for the support and the guidance.

    5'6" 217lbs getting sleeve surgery

I am 5'6" and weighed in at 214 on the day of my sugery 2 1/2 weeks ago. I, too, was skinnier when I was younger. Over the past 5 years or so, I gained weight and could NOT lose any weight no matter what I tried. After the gastric sleeve 2 1/2 weeks ago, I am already down to 198. This is such a gift! It's not easy, but it's so worth it. I would do it again in a heartbeat. This is changing my life!!!!![emoji173][emoji173][emoji173][emoji173] I know, you too, will love it!!!!!![emoji173][emoji173][emoji173][emoji173] Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    After Surgery

Hey everyone, I have some exciting news, I got approved for gastric bypass this past Monday and, my surgery date is next month on the 22nd. I was just wondering what kinds of exercises that you guys have done and that you've had success in achieving also, I do have PCOS so I was just wondering for my fellow cysters how much weight have you guys lost in 2-12 months and what was your weight loss each month. I was also wondering what types of food did you guys eat after 2 weeks like what could you guys tolerate and, very lastly what can I expect before, during, and after my surgery?

    5'6" 217lbs getting sleeve surgery

I am 5’8” and was 235 when I started my journey. I can’t even remember my weight in high school or college because it was just NEVER A concern of mine until my late twenties when the symptoms of bipolar began. Between depression and the medication for the illness I just gained and gained. Dieting and regaining over and over until I finally got the sleeve. Now at 11 months out I am just above the “normal” range of BMI. I have to accept that on these meds I will never be a size one or even a three again but I am still very happy with my decision to do the sleeve. I have to admit that all I have been doing in terms of exercise is walking so with more exercise I would definitely be a normal BMI by now I’m sure.

    Would I qualify?

Being able to lose weight shouldn’t hold you back. Many of us have lost significant amounts of weight several times throughout the years but couldn’t keep it off. As for gaining a bunch of weight quickly I doubt that would matter. Some companies I have heard on here do require a weight history for several years but I don’t think many do. Many companies require you to do a six month long physician monitored diet where you have to get weighed once a month before they submit to insurance for approval.
  14. Has around anyone my size in this forum gotten gastric sleeve surgery? Do you have any regrets or do you wish you had gotten it sooner. I was always small when I was younger. I was under 100lbs when graduating high school. But after my 30s I started gaining and now at 50 I can't lose it at all. No matter what I try. I feel my next step/hope is WLS. Any info will be helpful. Thanks

    Would I qualify?

Thank you both. I've just remeasured myself and I'm 2 inches shorter than I was last time I was measured (it was years ago to be fair)! My BMI then comes out at 36 which obviously isn't a good thing as I'm further from my goal, but at least it might make it easier for me to sort getting support. Would my past history of being able to lose weight without surgery hold me back at all? Or that I've obviously gained a fair amount of weight in quite a short amount of time. I really want to nip it in the bud but I'm concerned that without some intervention I won't be able to and I don't want to go back to where I was originally.
  16. Apologies if I am posting in the wrong place! I used to have a BMI of around 60 (330 lbs) - I kept being told to get bariatric surgery but managed to lose weight without it, going down to a BMI of around 22 (115 lbs). I've maintained that weight loss for a long time, but over the past year my BMI has shot back up to 33 (180 lbs) but my waist size is disproportionate from everything I have read and is currently around 51 inches. I know most surgery says a BMI of 35 is the lower limit, but would my increased waist size and history of being severely obese count in my favour and mean I could go for surgery earlier? I have had to have my gallbladder removed and have a medical condition that flares up when I am significantly overweight too. It probably sounds stupid as I know I'm obese but my waist is so big in comparison to the rest of my body it feels constantly uncomfortable and I'm feeling absolutely desperate to sort it out and I'm just not managing with dieting like I did last time, plus I'm concerned that I'll keep gaining weight without help. I know it is probably something I just need to discuss with surgeons but I thought it would be worth getting other opinions or experiences if possible. Thanks in advance!
  17. Well for what it’s worth I got to 9 pounds from my goal without any exercise other than walking just by measuring my food so it can be done. I need to add exercise to get all the way there I think. At the same time when I lost a family member recently and went off plan it was super easy to gain some too. I think because I could eat so much when I wasn’t measuring.

    Am I eating too much?

Did your surgeon give an amount of food to eat? Mine & my daughter’s surgeon/plan/team (we each had different doctors) told us to not eat more then 3 oz. I am over 3 years out & I still weight my food at home. When we go out I cut my meat in 1/2 & have about 2 bites of veggies. I know that’s about 3oz. I know from doing my own cooking that adding ham, cheese & tomato to 1 egg is more then 3 oz. Stick with your plan & doctors instructions! Don’t try to eat more just because you can.
  19. Hi everyone! I'm scheduled for my revision on March 21, 2022. I had my original surgery 21 years ago! My sw prior to the first surgery was 375, in the first year I lost 100lbs getting down to 275... my lowest weight since then was 248 due to an illness. I've bounced up and down between 250 and 280 since then. I am a diabetic, have Gerd and was just diagnosed with very slow motility (my pcp says gastroparesis but my surgeon just says slow motility). When I started the process for revision (7months ago) my surgeon didn't think insurance would cover for just weight loss, but with further testing we discovered the digestion issue, his tune changed and surgery was approved! I know a lot has changed with protocols in the last 21 years! I see my surgeon next week for pre-op so I will be asking him a lot, but wanted to find out from anyone who's had the proximal to distal revision as well: What was the recovery like for the distal revision compared to the original surgery? Did you have to spend anytime in the hospital? My surgeon already mentioned he does it outpatient and I should go home same day, which seems crazy to me! I know weight loss can be slower with a revision. How much did you lose and in what timeframe? Any other pieces of advice? I plan on strictly following the food phases that the nutritionist gave me and leaning toward the longest of the time frames she gave me... ie 2-3 weeks post op liquid, 4-8 weeks soft foods etc... I am determined to lose and get to a goal weight of 155-175 which my surgeon said was possible in our initial meeting 8 months ago.

    Five Month Post Op Stall

I‘m 5 months post op too (well, in three days I am) and haven‘t lost a single lb in all of February. January and December felt incredibly slow too. We‘re around the same weight (SW: 304lbs, CW: 220lbs). Can I ask how tall you are?

    Five Month Post Op Stall

Eat the right amount of calories, walk gently and often, drink lots of water. Measure your stomach next month instead of weighing yourself because that can be traumatic - you don't want to lose weight, you want to lose fat (hopefully!). Be kind to yourself, it's only a month.

One thing you may not realize - most hospitals take a long time to discharge you because they have to get all their paperwork done, and the discharge nurse has to be available. The carer may or may not be able to come into your room (depending on COVID procedures) so she may need to wait in the car. I would talk to the surgery center to confirm if she can come in. I'm so sorry your family isn't supportive. I wish everyone could understand the necessity of this surgery, and that losing weight without surgery is basically impossible once you are significantly overweight.

I see you've already gotten some great ideas and have a ride lined up. Congratulations on your decision to have this life-changing surgery and under the difficult conditions of not having a support network around you. They don't understand that WLS is NOT THE EASY WAY OUT!!!! It's just a tool to help you make the right food and exercise choices. It's not a magic bullet that instantly takes all the weight off overnight.

    Five Month Post Op Stall

Frustratingly, stalls can happen once or multiple times while your losing. They can last for a week to 3 or 4 weeks. If they persist, have a chat with your dietician/nutritionalist to review your diet. Sometimes a small tweak can kick start your loss again. I also think you’ve answered some of your own question by saying you’ve let your food choices slide a little (we’ve probably all done it at some time). Best is to get back on your plan re food choices, portion sizes, etc. I have a small window of calorie intake variation to maintain (don’t check my calories everyday but do random checks) & recently I’ve put on a little weight. I’ve realised, in my attempt to up my protein intake a bit (since my gall was removed I don’t absorb it well) I’ve increased my calories. Increasing my portion size of meat (3oz to 4), throwing in some beans to my lunch salads, etc. & there’s the reason for the weight gain. Though I reduced the amount of vegetables I was eating the calorie difference was not enough to compensate. Can’t believe I didn’t realise. My surgeon’s doctor has put me back on Creons to help with protein absorption & I’m going back to my previous eating habits.
  25. Hey y'all! I had my surgery on 2/17, was discharged on 2/18, and back to work on 2/21 (against my doctor's advice). I have been in the gym almost everyday for an hr on the treadmill and I'm down 15lbs so far. My doctor thinks I'm nuts for going back to work so soon, but I sit at a desk all day and I honestly have very little pain. I don't even use the pain meds. My only struggle is eating pureed foods for another week. My doctor skipped the liquid diet and put me straight to pureed foods. My starting weight was 280lbs and 1 week later I'm at 265lbs. I'm excited !! Just curious as to when others started noticing that a smaller wardrobe was needed?
