    Protein, Protein, Protein

Allow me to disagree. You can't expect somebody who's just had surgery to have 80-100gr a protein daily. That's just not possible. I am three days out and my new stomac can't handle more than 3 table spoons of yogurt at a time if not less. We all do it at our own pase, as are all different. Weight loss is not a race and we all do it differently.

    Letty's journey post-op

I would like to start posting more on the food I eat now at 9 months out. This is what I had yesterday: 5:10am 1/2 banana and 1 tablespoon Peanut Butter 6:30am coffee with Splenda and fair life milk (this is the reason I couldn't keep dr Weiner diet) I really need my coffee and it needs to be with Splenda and milk. 9:00 3 egg whites with turkey sausage, veggies, and cheese 11:30am premier chocolate Protein shake and 1 cup of veggies 2:00pm coffee again and nuts 5:30pm 1 cup of fage Greek yogurt 0% with a crystal light packet. 7:00pm watermelon and some more nuts I haven't been tracking my food in my fitness pal! I guess I need to. My weight is still at 169-170. I bumped up my exercise a lot more this past week and have every intention on keeping up with exercise. What I found out that is much easier if I do the exercise in the morning - get it out if the way as early as possible . So far within the past 8 days I have done 4 boot camp classes and one Zumba and walked on the treadmill 2 times for 45min. I hope I start seeing the scale move, however I will be happy as long as I feel good and see that my clothes fit better! Hope everyone have a great day!

    Water!

Iipstick lady if you look you can see I can have Beans as well as banana. On the bigger list it says only half a banana. And for the record I only blended that once with my premier and yogurt. Because it made even more drink I had a little and sipped on it for lunch put the rest in the fridge the next day I threw it away it smelled horrible. But you can think whatever you want. In the end my success will tell my story. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App

    One week post op!

That's great that you're feeling better @@haleymarie You should definitely continue to push to get in your liquids and Protein every day. Try some different ways to get your protein in. There's some water-based Protein drinks that will help you get in both your liquids and protein. About TIme Pro Hydrate and Isopure are two that I know of. Also, there's a protein pudding recipe that's really good as well. Just take a scoop of vanilla or chocolate Protein powder, 6oz of plain, nonfat greek yogurt, and 1-2 tsp of Water. Mix it up, add water to thin to your liking. You might not finish it in one sitting but it's a great way to get in some extra protein while getting a "snack" as well. Best of luck!
  5. Good way to add extra protein to your shake, 1 cup of 1% milk at 9g of protein along with half a cup of Greek yogurt for 8.5g , half of a small banana along with your powder I have a shake that is 44.5g of protein....

    Options! I need options!

When I was on soft foods I ate refried Beans with cheese, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, tuna, grilled salmon, etc. I didn't have room for much more than the Protein. I did start having some green beans on occasion, but I certainly wouldn't have had room for mashed potatoes (plus, I avoid starches). The World According To Eggface blog has some recipe ideas for the soft phase.

    Stomach trouble

We can often develop food intolerances immediately postop with lactose being one of the most common. That could be the cause of the pain and diarrhea. For me, lactose, artificial sweeteners and plain Water caused severe pain, but fortunately the intolerances went away after about 4 months. Maybe try not drinking the Protein shakes or yogurt for a few days and see if it gets better. You can use almond or coconut milk or even Lactaid milk and an egg, soy or hemp Protein powder to get in your protein during that time. Even an ultra filtered 100% whey powder might work since it is much lower in lactose than the premier Protein drinks. And I definitely second the Probiotics suggestion. Look for a product with 20-30 different strains and at least 50 billion CFU found in the refrigerated section of most whole/health food stores.
  9. Today is day 12 post op and my biggest issue is stomach irritability, I guess is the best way to describe it. It never stops and is quite uncomfortable and embarrassing. When empty it is calmer but with any food whatsoever it's obnoxious. I know it has to be gas but I rarely pass any, more likely I will have diarrhea. It's loud, rumbly, and at times painful, but always uncomfortable. Of all the things to be concerned with, I know this seems trivial but if someone could give me some guidance, I'd sincerely appreciate it. I'm to the point that I'm abstaining from food too much. I know that's not right and need to fix this. So far, my soft foods are eggs, Soups, and yogurt. My shakes are Premier Protein. I'm always able to make my Water intake. Purée stage

Cottage cheese, hummus, refried beans, ricotta bake (recipe online, Greek yogurt (low sugar), sugar free pudding, canned tuna with mayo (check to see if tuna allowed in this stage on your plan)... there's a recipe section on this site.

    Anyone get sleeved in May?

I had my surgery on May 4th. I am still on a full liquid diet, which is mainly yogurt, cottage cheese and creamed soup. I miss sitting with my husband and kids at dinner. I have just been staying away since it is hard. I'm feeling like this was a big mistake. I hope I feel "normal" once I can eat again. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    One week post op!

Everyone's different I guess. I believed that too until in hospital they were giving me pudding and yogurt
  15. Let's see, the first 4 days were pretty rough, but now as of a week out its a lot better. I'm still not getting in all my liquids and protien but I am eating. I've managed apple sauce, yogurt, pudding, and mashed patatoes. No more then 4oz and I def haven't tried. But I feel normal again. How is everyone else feeling.
  16. What wonderful responses you've had on this thread! I'm 21 months post-op, have lost all my excess weight (100 pounds) and now maintaining easily at 135 pounds. Currently (and I emphasize "currently" because things could change, which would mean I'd have to change what I'm doing) ... * I love food! Love the taste of it, the varieties of it, the nutrition of it, the discoveries, the freedom, and the fact that I am no longer afraid of food. Food has become a resource to me, as well as a pleasure. * Since I'm now on maintenance (eating about 1800 cals/day) about 75% of my calories come from nutritious food. The other 25% of my calories come from from good-tasting, but un-nutritious things like alcohol (one drink a day), sugar treats (e.g., 1 biscotti, 2 squares of dark chocolate), or a starchy item (e.g., small biscuit). * I eat a lot of animal and plant Protein, aim for 5 veggies and fruits a day, whole grains, and mostly healthy fats and oils (although I do have a little butter). * I eat full-fat cheese, skim milk, low-fat yogurt -- weird combo, I know, but I like it. * I minimize fast food -- have it rarely. * Only rarely do I eat white bread, white rice, white potatoes, white flour Pasta. Instead, I eat whole grain breads, brown rice, sweet potatoes, whole wheat, protein-enhanced pasta. * I make most of my eating decisions when I make grocery lists and shop for food. If trigger and unnutritious foods are not in the house, I can't eat them. That's a very good piece of advice for you. * I cook a lot more than I used to -- which reflects how rarely I eat "fast food" these days. * I plan my meals and I track all my food and drink intake in My Fitness Pal. I love it. Frankly, for me, it's the second best tool I use to maintain my weight; the first best tool, of course, is my sleeve. * I still (most days) drink a Protein Drink for Breakfast. I just like the taste, and it gives me a great start to the day of 25 grams of protein for only 170 calories. * I take my very few meds (thyroid and H2 blocker antacid) and my Vitamins and other dietary supplements daily and on time. * So far, no food is permanently off limits -- although a lot of foods are on the "only once a week" list or "once in a blue moon" list or "only at X restaurant" list. * I'm still learning a lot about nutrition, metabolism, and eating mindfully. I expect I'll never stop learning. I hope not.

    Protein, Protein, Protein

@Vegann2014 MY shakes are 30 grams if I drank it all. I do eat black Beans, yogurt, and cottage cheese eggs and thin slices deli meats. I only eat one of those choices per meal and only about 4 table spoons. And if I eat the meat it is very thin sliced and I can eat a whole slice. All of that is a form of Protein I do like Soup homade soup and I do tend to have that at least one meal and that is liquid and protein or vegetables. I do not feel sick or anything and I am doing better with the Water. I will try harder with the shakes. But then I can't eat food. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App

Nothing to speed up weightloss like divorce

I called about sleep meds and asked about something for the anxiety not to numb the feelings but because my stomach is doing the stress which is making eating food impossible. I have been living on not enough Protein, not enough calories and can barely keep down yogurt. She gave me some stuff that she hopes will help. I tried to go to the gym today to take my mind off but didn't last long, no sleep and no food make for a weak workout. It's a process. I'll be fine most of the day then melt down... I truly hope things work out but still preparing incase it doesn't we both have a long way and a lot to deal with. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk
  21. Hi, thanks SO much for all of the input!!! I wouldn't have thought that egg beaters (the substitute- not real eggs) or rice krispies were OK for this stage, but my nutritionist was the one that suggested it, and it was in the handouts they gave us for Post-Op diet stages. Rice Krispies has low sugars (4 g) so they said it was OK. The egg beaters have a good amount of Protein, so I guess that's why (plus they're soft- though I would've thought that we should wait til the soft food stage). I like the suggestion of Greek Yogurt. I have some that is low sugar (I couldn't find any sugar free), so I will try adding that to my diet. I'm going to try to lessen the amount of rice krispies, and egg beaters, though, because I really do need to be focusing on getting my Protein drinks in. It's definitely a trial and error, learning experience. I'm bringing my food journal with me to my first post-op dr's appointment in 3 days, so I can discuss my issues with the dr, as well (they ask you to bring it). I'm taking Protonix (I've been on it for a year or so..I have bad reflux), but I think honestly, it's a lot of head hunger, combined with boredom, and just trying to figure out how to manage actual hunger when it occurs. I'm going top try not to weigh myself that much for awhile, since that also can be detrimental at first, if I focus on just the number. Thanks to everyone for your advice, encouragement and suggestions, and for making me feel not so alone! -Erin
  22. That's unfortunate you didn't get better information. You should be concentrating on high Protein / low carb. At your stage (if you are at the puree stage) - you could eat things like hummus, creamy soups (no chunks), cottage cheese, ricotta cheese (there's a ricotta bake recipe online), Greek yogurt (watch the sugars), eggs, sugar free pudding, and of course, Protein shakes. If you follow the typical post-op diet of protein first, low carb and get all of your Water in (non caloric drinks) then you won't fail. Good luck!

    Having awful days! Help!

Omg, I am so sorry for this. That must be horrible! Sounds like there isn't ANYTHING that you will be able to keep down. I am only 12 days post so I still do liquids only with the exception of Greek yogurt. I haven't thrown up since the hospital for after surgery so unfortunately I have no advice except to call your doctor or nutritionist. You need to get something in you that stays because it's very dangerous otherwise. Good luck and I hope you find the answer. Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App

    Stress-induced Weight Loss

@@JamieLogical - sorry to hear you are going thru some issues with hubby :/ hope you two are working towards a solution. @@Babbs - I am in the same boat as you I haven't gained 5, at the moment 3, but I know it is stressed induced from my adult son and pending medical results from CT on Friday for me. Jamie/Babbs, I seem to do better during the week because I am preoccupied with work but as soon as Friday gets here I am struggling to stay 'in the game'. I don't know what to do either. I have tried to stay busy but when I cant sleep at night I get up and watch TV. I get a cup of 80cal LF greek yogurt or cheese stick if I am hungry. The urge to plow through a plate of brownies was ridiculous at 1130 last night!
  25. Erin, I know we are all different. My op was May 5th.the first few days i struggled to get liquids in. As I felt better, I drank more. You mentioned you eat soup, rice Krispies, etc, I have only five liquid, until this week where I added Greek yogurt. Muscle milk and Isopure were/are my Protein sources. By day five, my primary doctor appointment, I had dropped 19 lbs but I was heavier than you going in (274) and didn't lose much preop. Here's my thing. I had this done for my HEALTH-get rid of diabetes. The weight loss is an added benefit and a nice one at that. I won't get on a scale unless I'm at a doctor or follow up. I am shrinking; I can tell in my clothes but I refuse to let the scales rule me. In fact, before I had this surgery I had begun thinking that way and lecture my friends who have weight problems about it. Put the scale away. It can be sabotaging. Make how you FEEL your goal. If you're a foodie, as I am, it's daunting at first and emotional to realize I will never eat the way I used to (used to turn to food and in all emotional states) and food is for nutrition only. I will still enjoy meal time, but not abuse it, I hope. So far, so good. I feel great and I sleep so well now whereas before I could NEVER sleep thru the night. I also think you'll do better once you're back working. Or doing something after there's no pain. Walk a lot. It's so good to do. I feel I still don't walk enough even. I returned to work on May 9th, four days post-op, but my job isn't too physically demanding. I am a restaurant general manager and I made sure to have enough crew on just in case I couldn't do it. Good luck to you girl! Try to remember that this is for your health and to live longer. Also, I'm sure you are reading less than before so the weight loss will start showing once you are moving more. A good way to tell the difference between number and head hunger is to all yourself if you're hungry enough to eat an apple. Or a boiled chicken. Lol good luck girl! Hang in there!
