    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I’m on the 8th. I’m getting nervous about the pain and recovery as well. Telling your friends and family is totally your choice. You can just say that you are losing weight for your health using high protein, low carb. Good luck to you.
  2. I have my pre-op procedures of upper GI and chest X-ray on Tuesday morning and my pre-op primary care physician appointment for clearance on Tuesday afternoon. I’m getting closer! After I had finished my nutritional class requirements at the first of January I thought surgery was imminent as we were told in the doctor talk that we were about a month away. But as I’ve read on here, enjoy the journey. Don’t rush. Be patient. Be gentle. I haven’t been very patient which is very evident by how little I chewed my food! I’ve been working on that. I’m turning 60 this week! I am excited that this milestone and my wls are close together. I feel ready for some good changes. My bmi is 44. I think at my highest weight it was 46. I feel so roly-poly. I want to kick my type 2 diabetes to the curb. I want to be able to be more active without the constant pain in my arthritic knees and ankles. I want to keep up with my two little granddaughters. I want to fit into seats! I am very glad to find this app/support group. My doc said that they had one on Facebook but I’ve given up that so I was glad to find this better alternative.
  3. My husband was initially against it. He was afraid it wouldn’t work, or that I would regain the weight. However, he was supportive of my decision. Since I’ve lost the majority of excess weight, I think he is happily surprised. Time will tell if I can keep the weight off permanently.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Im scheduled for March 12th! Starting my LRD tomorrow (god give me strength!) Im really excited to see the weight shift! Im excited to think I will be able to get into my old clothes again - the ones ive been saving because "one day ill get back into that" But im nervous. Nervous about the recovery. Nervous about the pain. Nervous about having time off work. Worried about my family seeing the weight coming off but not really knowing why. I know at some point im going to have to have the conversation about my reasons for having WLS - but for now, only myself and my partner know. Im happy about that.

    Food Woes

Thank you for reminding me I was making chili for a good stretch there and fell off the wagon so I am making more chili today as meal prep for the week. I also bought some tuna and protein bars I like. it’s constant work! congrats on your weight loss so far we are surgery day buddies!

    March 2022 surgery buddies

I'm not really having food funerals. Partly, I think, because I had a really bad infection in October from a cat bite that basically had me super sick from the industrial strength antibiotics they had me on. Completely lost my appetite, and although I can and am eating now, I'm just not feeling the need to binge. Though, I did get some dairy queen last night lol and I had a couple of drinks. Might have some carb heavy meals before starting my pre-op diet, but other than that, I'm more focused on my goals. After 21 years, 10 years of which I've been trying to get Dr's to understand the severity of the stomach issues I have, I know what this lifestyle looks like. I didn't gain back any of the weight from my original surgery, but I never got to goal weight either. I have about another 75-95 lbs to lose. I know this time around it's not going to come off as easily or quickly, but I'm ready to put in the work. Only thing that's a bummer is, the surgery is about 2 weeks before my 50th, so no birthday cake for me (unless it's a cake flavored protein drink lol).

I'm 7 years out and have done pretty good with keeping the weight off. I haven't stayed at my lowest but my surgeon said it's totally normal to gain some weight back. I'm going in on Tuesday for a revision to bypass due to severe GERD. I'd love to drop and keep off another 25 pounds. Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app

You are not an idiot! Weight gain and loss is a part of life, surgeries or not. I think it's a great step you can even recognize your patterns and ask for help. It's tough but I know there's hope. The biggest thing I see is to always make sure you have mental health support and put just as much work into that as you do the surgery or weight loss journey. I wish you luck and hope insurance helps you out with it! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  9. I am 2 weeks out and worried that im going to regret it. I think about food more than i ever have and im still in a lot of pain around one of the incision sites. It burns every time i change position or cough and i cannot use my core muscles without pain. I'm also freezing all the time. Im down 14 lbs so far, although it doesnt feel like ive lost anyhing and its starting to slow down. But i know there will be starts and fits with regard to the pounds coming off. I dont regret it yet but ive gotten close. Maybe once ive lost more weight (and actually feel like it) and i fit into jeans that i havent been able to wear in years ill feel more positive about things. But i dont regret it yet. point is that you wont really know until you do it. I keep thinking of the positives and the reasons im doing this- to be healthier able to more fully participate in my life. maybe ill regret it if i dont achieve my goals or maybe ill realize that im still healthier even if i still weigh more than i want and cant eat all the things i could before. I wont know or be able to say, if i regret it until im farther away from surgery and back to somewhat of a normal life. in looking at why others regret surgery or not, you have to consider why they regret it. Is the regret due to a temporary complication or long term failure to achieve goals, or something else. i had the support of my family but not of my best friend, however i had to make the decision for myself, just like you. Regardless of what you decide, you have my support. And all the people here.

This is exactly what I have done in the past, lose weight then gain it back plus more, although I've never gone past my highest weight. One of the reasons I'm keen to get started with a surgery journey is because I've gained back so much in such a short space of time that I'm worried that I'll keep getting bigger at this rate and before I know it I'll be further from healthy than I've ever been. I have now booked in to talk to a doctor next week, which is something I've been delaying in the hopes I can lose the weight without help, plus I hadn't realised that I had slipped beyond a BMI of 30 (although now I know for sure, it is incredibly obvious that I am at an unhealthy size/shape, I even used to have loose skin that is now full again, I do not understand how I've been in this denial so badly, I feel like an absolute idiot!). I just want to be a healthy weight without using disordered techniques!! Suzannethemom - I was concerned that that would be the case. I do suffer from idiopathic intracranial hypertension when I am at an unhealthy weight level, plus my home blood pressure readings have been high recently, I've just not seen the doctor about it as of yet. With the remeasuring of my height (I haven't been measured in about 20 years!) it does put my at a BMI of 36 so I'm hoping that they'll agree I am a suitable candidate. Thank you all! Your help is greatly appreciated.

    Emotions on high post op?

yes - there are a lot of hormonal things that go on the first few weeks after surgery. A lot of women complain about screwed up menstrual cycles as well as moodiness. It has to do with estrogen being stored in fat cells - it's released during rapid weight loss. It'll all level out eventually and things will go back to normal. Just hang in there...

    Long term success

seven years out. I lost 235 lbs and put about 20 lbs back on during year 3 (which is pretty common - most of us experience a 10-20 lb rebound after hitting our lowest weight). there are no food restrictions once you get a few months out. Some people can't tolerate certain foods (I can't handle really fat-laden meals, for example), but nothing is off the table once you're out a ways. I can eat pork and other red meat with no problem. Edited to add that I almost never went off plan until I was a year out. I'm not really on any plan anymore other than I still eat the minimum grams of protein that I'm required to eat. I'm also cognizant of my calorie intake, but I'm not longer obsessive about it. If I eat too much one day, I just cut back a bit the next day. As long as it all evens out in the end and my weight is pretty stable, I don't worry about it.

    Would I qualify?

I chose to get surgery because I've been a chronic dieter, laser and gainer. My dream is to just maintain a healthy weight. I once lost 70 lbs which was most of my excess weight and then gained it back plus some. I tried to lose the weight for 2 years straight but would ultimately lose then gain again. I got so tired of it. I took charge of my mental health first and then started exploring weight loss surgery. I think it's a good option if you can swing it. My insurance didn't cover it even though my BMI was 45 at the time. But I have terrible insurance lol Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Long term success

I mostly eat to plan. My plan is my normal, daily eating style. I never counted calories or grams of protein or ounces of water. I eat a lot of pork and a lot of red meat, though they are very much on my plan and always have been from day 1 post-op. Nothing is out of your diet forever except those things you can't handle in moderation. There are also plenty of things that should not make a frequent appearance in your eating... well, at least my eating. The weird thing of it all is I don't know why I have stuck to this plan for 18 years, but I could never stick to a plan pre-op. I have theories that involve sticking to plan and positive feedback, but it's not well formed. But, my surgeon never had a concept of "after I lost my excess weight." The plan was forever. Good luck, Tek

I find losing weight quite easy. I also unfortunately find gaining weight just as easy. I had the surgery to find a new life of intuitive healthy eating without measuring which is bad for my mental health. I was exactly BMI 35 when I had the surgery. I believe US insurances will pay if you have >35 with comorbidities.

Those who have had the surgery in the past. Who all have kept the weight off? Have you stuck with the food plan perfectly? I eat a lot of pork now and some red meat. Are those foods off my diet forever?

    Am I eating too much?

My dietitian didn’t tell me how much or how little either. She said, keep it simple. Try for 60-80 grams of protein per day. If you can do that much, try for some veg. The basic goal is 20g of protein per meal. I wouldn’t stress out about stretching your pouch, but do eat slowly and weigh and measure your food. My dietitian said 4 oz weight or 113.4 grams is the protein goal per meal (just my plan). It took me until 5 months to consistently get that far. At 6 months out, I’ve learned that it takes my pouch 35-40 minutes to signal it’s full. So weigh, measure, record is my motto. One meal of egg looks like 4 eggs (yuck), or 2 large eggs, 1 oz 50% fat reduced lactose free cheese, 1 oz ham. 1 oz roughly equals 28 grams. 20 grams of nutritional protein weights 113.398 grams of weight (of meat). I hope this helps, but it’s only my plan. I hope you’re dietitian gets back to you.

    5'6" 217lbs getting sleeve surgery

Thanks for your info. So happy to hear your positive feedback!! I'm hoping surgery will help with my feet pain and I'll be able to exercise more to help with more weight loss.
  22. Hey…congrats. I had my surgery on 2/16 and I was just put on puréed foods 2 days ago. I went in at 236 and now I am 226, I think most of it is due to walking, My doctor has me walking at least one hr a day because unfortunately I am unable to excel is due to knee damage. I am back at school and work as well. Other than the occasional reflux or gas pain I am much better. I saw that a pair of pajama pants that were normally tight were no longer so and there was extra room in them now. I haven’t checked my weight since Thursday but I am pretty sure I done loss some more.
  23. So I’m almost 5 weeks post op, I’m down 41lbs including my 2 week pre-op. I have moved to soft foods stage 4 in my plan. Egg salad, scrambled eggs, cheese sticks, chili, still eating soups and I have now added fluke, and cod to the menu. I’m able to take in about 3-4oz of the fish, 2 scrambled eggs, a cup of soup(doesn’t matter which type, also not eating chix if chix soup and so on) I drink a protein shake almost every day(fair life 150 cal 30g protein) and I’m now back at the gym treadmill 30-40 min both incline and non inclined and I started with the weights(not heavy) I feel my stomach is probably healed at this point as my acid reflux has gone away since eating some real food. I do take an acid reducer in the morning as prescribed by my Dr. Also getting in my b12, multi and calcium vitamins almost regularly. Is anyone else eating anything else?? When can I eat a salad? I do get about 64 oz of water and tea how is everyone else doing???

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

So, we're in about the same boat. I'm down 83lbs in 3 months and 10 days. Still going in the right direction, even if slowing down. Hitting between 6500 and 9000 steps per day at this point ... that about an hour of walking daily after work. Mixing in band exercises while at the office and while walking. The diet is still fairly clean, especially during the work week.... though I did allow myself a piece of toast today. Only lost 1.8 lbs this week, but a loss is a loss. I had ...probably an unrealistic goal, to reach -100 by my March 17 doctor appointment. Looking like it will be closer to -90. Which of course is still fantastic! Wearing clothes that I haven't been able to wear in a while. Need to break down and buy a couple pairs of salvation army pants soon... as it is I have to wear shorts under my pants to keep them up! Lol. I'm thinking about starting some weight training soon. I know there are different camps on this idea but I want to counter some of the loose skin by building some tone. I'll likely see the scale slow even further but I need to realize that the redistribution of weight is there. Looking forward to the next -17!

    Food Woes

You had your surgery the day before me, congrats to both of us on our weight loss so far. At home why not keep your foods simple to start. These are the things that I am eating with a spoonful of veg here and there. Boiled egg, shrimp and a slice of avocado, a slice of ham wrapped around cheese, tuna salad, chilli con carne, coronation chicken, smoked salmon and cream cheese. Hope this helps
