Pre-Op Diet - Toughest thing I ever had to do
RD86 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm currently on my pre-op diet which is a 1000 calorie a day mostly liquid diet. I am allowed to have shakes (Muscle Milk Lite), which is absolutely atrocious because of the after taste. I was convinced it was not bad and I bought $150 worth of it to last me the 2 weeks. Also I am allowed to have 2cups of vegetables a day which is my splurge of a iceberg lettuce for dinner. It's day 2 and I'm down from 373lbs to 363lbs, 10 pounds in 2 days, I don't know if it's bad to lose that much weight or is it normal. It's very sad but I can't wait for my surgery and I can't wait till I'm able to eat some scrambled eggs when I get eat soft food.... -
Don't be surprised if your first fill doesn't do it for you. I had to go back for a 2nd fill a couple weeks later as the first one did almost nothing. Even with this 2nd fill I can eat a lot more than I should. Part of that is my choices: you have to stop eating after 20 min or you can eat almost as much as you could pre-band. The band doesn't stop me from grazing. I've been working so hard to make good food choices (2-3 oz of Protein and some veggies or a piece of fruit for each meal) but I am occasionally slipping up and the scale is being mean to me this week. Here's hoping that the first fill works wonders for you! (and if it doesn't that you have a doc who will let you come back right away)

Temperamental Sleeves

I Think you just need to be a bit more patient. You most likely will be able to eat most anything but give it time. I'm almost 8 weeks now and things are improving everyday. I am not rushing things though, baby steps. Perhaps you are eating to fast or you are taking big bites? Just throwing out thoughts to help you through. -
9/27 is 3 months for me. I've already dabbled with romaine lettuce and raw spiniach and been ok. I ate two bites and had no issues. I've been eating raw spinach and romaine in a half a sandwich, or wrapped with meat and cheese. I'm going to try to eat an acutal salad this weekend. I just make sure to chew really well and remind myself to eat slow. That all said, I've also had zero issues eating anything... I'm sorta disappointed by that. I have to be on top of it and make sure to not take advantage of that, something I've just realized this week.

It will get better! The gas pains took a few days to get moved out though. The first week or so it was uncomfortable when I swallowed anything also. Just remember things are swollen up in there still, that will get better as well, just take small sips. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Things to pay attention to: - Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), this is the amount of calories your body needs in a day just to exist (think in a coma, alive but not moving). BMR drops as we lose weight and as we get older. So it's something that should be calculated and monitored with WLS. https://www.active.com/fitness/calculators/bmr - Your water intake, you stated that you try to hit your protein targets, which is great, but your body just cannot break down fat if there isn't enough water. - 3.5 miles 2x a week isn't near enough. The minimum basic goal is 30 mins of targeted physical activity EVERY DAY, for WLS, it really should be 60+. Also, running is great, but running will **ONLY** lean out muscle, if you want to burn more fat minute to minute, you need to be building muscle mass. - Without seeing (or being a doctor specifying in plastics) It's entirely possible to have 20 lbs of excess skin - Have you had your body fat measured? I'd be interested to see what your lean mass to fat mass numbers are. I'm 5'9 currently at 258.9, 37.2% body fat, My scale calculates that I have 162.7 lbs of lean muscle and 96.2 lbs of fat. I'm shooting for 200 lbs, so if I do make it to 200, I'll still have 37.3 lbs of fat that *could* be worked off if I really wanted to, this doesn't count skin weight though. If you are really stuck/stalled and frustrated, try re-doing the pre-surgical diet to "reset" things. I also highly suggest starting to track your intake and burn again, if you are burning more than you are taking in, you *WILL* lose weight.

A little over a month out and stopped losing.
Forsythia replied to Sassypants92201's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had a two week stall. It sucked. Immediately after the surgery all the fluids come off and it is magic. But then the body is all "OMG WTF just happened to me? Hold up!" It takes a bit of time to figure things out! -
There is this one guy in my office that makes me blush. You know the one; ultra good looking, nice, suave, the whole package. Anyway, he's been commenting on my weight loss for the last couple of weeks. Well yesterday, I was walking in a door as he was walking out. He stopped as he was walking out and was like 'Hi Julia' as I was walking away to my desk. He didn't just walk out quickly, he paused for a minute. I think he was checking out my fanny :blushing: I just said hi and kept walking. It's nice to have the fellas take notice again. J.

Can Exercise Regulate Resting Body Temperature After WLS?
Creekimp13 replied to logicwand's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I walk about 7 miles a day and do cardio, circuit training and water aerobics in a heated pool twice a week. I'm on my elliptical a little each day. I'm COLD. All the freakin time. Exercise doesn't help...except when I'm doing it. -
I am only three week post-op and have luckily been ok. On Sunday, though, I felt really hungry. I had a hot cup of tea and the feeling subsided. Hope today was better than yesterday!

Graduated to soft food! What I had today..
PorkChopExpress replied to The New Kel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's so nice to finally get to sink your teeth into something though, isn't it?! I'm on week four, heading into week 5...and I'm on shredded cooked meats now. Next week will be whole pieces, grilled or whatever (although technically, I've already had that and it was just fine). Then one more week and I'm cleared to try "anything" and see how it goes. That will be nice. I feel like I have to be so specific right now, when I get groceries. I guess in some ways I will still have to be, staying away from fried things and a bunch of bread and Pasta type carbs, but I could go get some Kung Pao chicken at least! It is really weird, the portion sizes. A coworker chuckled the other day when he walked in on me in the kitchen eating my little 1/2 cup container of meat and potato. Kind of comical to see this big dude eating like that. -
Graduated to soft food! What I had today..
dianemar replied to The New Kel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to go from liquids to blended to soft foods. took 6 weeks till soft foods. I had poached eggs, I was craving them so much. I had them on sautéed spinach, onions and mushrooms, cooked till very soft, it was sooooo goooood. I'm 9 weeks post op now, well in to 'normal' foods. I had a problem today, when in a hurry getting things done preparing for work, I ate my lunch way too fast and filled up way too much, ended up calling off 4 hours because I felt soo sick, and ended up throwing everything up. Lesson learned. I generally feel so good that I tend to question my new habits, but I learned a good lesson today. -
So ashamed!

I am doing their meal plan but I had radioactive iodine treatment to fix my thyroid on 4/4 and it makes me gain weight. I went to my endocrinologist yesterday and she was amazed that I hadn't gained 30lbs in the 8 weeks since treatment. I gotta lose these pounds before the 24th or I fear I'll never get a date :-( -
Well bandsters I started, Jillian Micheal's Body revolution on Saturday, July 27th. My goal is to be at my ideal body weight of 132 by the end of this 90 day training session. I am also going to continue to work out with my trainer 3 days a week for a while. I find it so addictive and difficult to break up with him. He is so motivational and pushes me to do more. My other goal is to cut back on training sessions by the end of this session with my DVD's so I will have more money for clothes. I will log my progress here weekly, so stay tuned. ( I am posting this so I will be accountable, out there for the world to see) Starting weight: 140 Waist: 30" Bust:( upper chest) 36" Below Bust: 33" Lower Abdomen: 36 2/8" Hips: 36 6/8" Thighs: (Largest Part) 21" Calf: 13 7/8 " Upper Arm: 11 7/8 " I will do my measurements and weight every Sunday for the next 90 days to follow my progress.

Why no caffeine on pre op diet?
TSB replied to msbrady's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doc says no caffeine ever pre-op/post-op. The # 1 reason I have been given is that it can contribute to ulcers. Other reasons I have been given is that it functions as a diuretic and after WLS it is very important to stay hydrated. I have also been told that caffiene can stimulate the appetite. I was a heavy coffee drinker -- 1st cup at 5:30 am and drank straight through unil about 3:00 pm daily. Probably had about 10 cups a day on most days. I started to wean myself off by setting a # of cups of regular coffee. I allowed myself 3-4 cups a day. I did that for a week or so. Then for a couple of weeks I drank 1/2 caf. Finally, I move to straight decaf. It was rough, that's for sure. I had headaches for about the 1st week after I went totally decaf. -
The nurse practitioner at my surgeon's office told me at least 60g of protein and 1,000-1,100 calories per day. I have been doing good with staying in the range for both but I think I am eating too many carbs. I have to do a better job with my selection of frozen dinners (like Healthy Choice and Lean Cuisine) and cut back on the high carbitems (noodles, rice) that come in some of them. It's hard to take all of this into consideration when selecting foods and I had been focusing more on calories and protein. I am looking for an idea or a range of how many carbs per day is considered good with the band.:help: Thanks to whoever suggested fitday.com. I have been using it for the past week.

What size is your meal portion???
Nachtigall replied to hastalabyebye's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had my surgery 25th of July. So far I have no fill in my band and I eat about 1 to 1 1/2 cups of food three times a day. I usually don't snack between meals. I feel my limit and know when to stop. The band feels tighter in the second half of my menstrual cycle. First half of my cycle is a little harder and I am hungry from time to time. It gets harder and I am thinking about getting a fill, but since I am losing weight...and, well, I still enjoy eating. I don't count calories, but I am careful of what I put in my mouth. I avoid highly processed and "diet food" and stay with the "real stuff", but eat much less of it. I buy more organic. I exercise every other day and love it. ~Kat -

These are great questions, and here' s what my own personal 'version of reality' is: 1) No, 'fullness' and 'stuck' are not the same sensation; 2) re: " I've not yet ever had any feeling of fullness or satiety. " The really BIG discovery *for ME* was to discover the difference between "hungry" and "NOT hungry". As basic as that seems now, the importance had escaped me for decades. Metaphors and analogies may all have their flaws, yet to me here's the best way I can respond: "Full" is the John Phillip Sousa Band blaring its way down the esophagus and marching in place in your stomach. That's the sensation I grew up to seek and justify whether I could/should/would continue eating. It had nothing to do with hunger. Such external controls as "is there any more"; "What can I have next"; "Here clean up this last little bit" and "of course I'd like another helping" until it was all gone. "Satiety" is a bird song in a forest glade, while you enjoy the quiet away from the bustle & hustle. It is reflection and discover that 'no I'm NOT 'hungry' but could/would/might eat more given the opportunity. 'Stuck' is the nausea & discomfort of and Eating Error of too much/too fast/too dry/too poorly chewed/ etc. It is wanting to get rid of the discomfort and 'PB' or urking or vomiting or throwing up or whatever your upper gullet does to rid the excess bolus of whatever you choked down. Slime & watery eyes & vague thoughts of never wanting to do it again are intensified depending on just HOW stuck with WHAT kind of food we have ingested. My own 'first REALLY stuck' was about postOp 4th week or so, having nibbled a few triscuits somehow I launching into a swallow-them-whole-ALL-NOWWW!!! phase and, yes...."stuck". Didn't know whether to call EMTs or just lay down & die. Second time was a month later, on solid foods.....took a single (small) bite scrambled egg & grits.....mistake...was on a road trip....managed to goo & drool & slime & slather my way over the next 200 miles hurling out the window about every 2 minutes. Not so pleasant then either....yet it gave me a close look at the difference between 'full' and 'stuck' ....and yes, helped define 'HUNGER'. So I would hope these experiences can help you define the answers you need for your questions. And I encourage continueing to seek out the difference bewteen 'hunger' and 'satiety'. A most useful concept, in my ongoing journey.

I go back next week also for a fill. I'm hoping this will put me in the green zone too. Its solo frustrating. Especially when see how much weight other people have lost in a short period of time. Praying we all hit the green zone and the weight starts falling off.
