  1. I will answer my own question. I met with Dr. Castro jan. 23. He is such a kind man. He answered every question I had and never rushed me. His office is efficient and caring. I've talked to another Doctor before Dr. Castro about the problems with my band ...and I wanted questions answered about a revision. Dr. Castro has done many revisions and considered a specialist on revisions from band to sleeve. While the first Doctor was nice....I never felt he was the one I could trust with my health. Dr. Castro though IS THAT DOCTOR for me I haven't decided on my sleeve date surgery but when I do...Dr. Manuel Castro will be my doctor.

    Long Time Sleevers

Tonight for dinner, we had venison steak with peppers and onions. I ate 6 strips (about 3-4 inches long), 3 or 4 of the peppers and onions, and about 1/8 of a cup of Zatarain's dirty rice. I am able eat 1/2 cup of ground meat, 1/2 of a taco with light lettuce and cheese, 1/3 of a chicken breast or a chicken leg, I can eat 1 slice of thin crust pizza, I can 1/2 cup of mac-n-cheese with ground meat mixed in it. I eat steak, typically t-bones grilled to med-well on our grill here at home. I can 2-3 slices of thin sliced deli meat with cottage cheese rolled up inside. I can eat 3/4 to 1 cup of venison chili made with ground meat. Venison is my favorite meat to eat because it's so lean, and so high in Protein. Plus, I found tons of recipes that make the meat so tender that I can eat more of it than other meats. I have absolutely zero digestion issues with meat. Cheese is the one thing that I do not consume all the time because I have found now that it is more binding than pre-op. I love cheese, but I eat it in moderation. I'm 6 months post revision from band to sleeve. I've been eating meat for 4 months. I started off with soft meats tuna, chicken salad, seasoned ground meat and boiled chicken breasts. I love beef Jerky (teriyaki flavor is my favorite and eat it once a week) as well, but I try to watch the sodium content.
  3. Thanks for posting this. I'm only 5 weeks out from a band revision and am almost to the lowest I ever got w/my band. I've been wondering if I'll actually lose any beyond that point. Seeing that it can happen lifts my spirits a great deal. People are asking me about my end goal and I've made an initial goal but have been half afraid of thinking of something long term because of how frustrating & disappointing life was with my band. Seeing your success gives me hope that is time my body won't stop and stall out. <hugs>. Thanks!

I had the revision from lap band to gastric bypass 2 days ago. To the great surprise to my doctors,I was up and walking and passing the mandatory fluids so I only needed one night in the hospital. I'm just on clear liquids but so far so good. Originally (11 years ago) the lap band worked for me and I lost about 100 pounds but when I had my gall bladder removed the band had flipped and it was replaced. The new band never worked for me. I constantly needed adjustments and fills. Over the last 5 years I gained back 55 pounds. My esophagus is enflamed. I have been dehydrated for years because I could not tolerate water. I had difficulty taking any medications because they would just sit in my esophagus. Now that the band is out I can drink water, soup, protein shakes and take all my vitamins and supplements. I am feeling tired but excessively positive
  5. Had an outpatient band to sleeve revision (one step) and it took a little over an hour.

    Who to tell

There is no right or wrong answer to your question. This is a completely personal choice based on what you are comfortable with. I personally have done both... i told everyone when i had the band. And now that i have the sleeve i told only my family and 1 close friend. I choose not to tell the 2nd time around because i was sick of being known as the girl who had wls. Everything revolved around my weight and what i ate... i was no longer "me" my wls became what defined me, and i received a lot of negativity and pressure. I would get judged if i ate something naughty People felt it was okay to comment about everything and give unwanted advice I was constantly being watched when i ate, and criticized when THEY thought i ate too much or badly The pressure was overwhelming and i just didn't need it, especially when i am so hard on myself anyway. I felt that i wasn't given credit for my hard work, and was constantly being told i took the easy way out. I also lost many friendships as they felt i "changed"... because i was no longer their doormat and got my confidence back.. During arguments i had people use my weight loss against me when they ran out of ammunition. These were the main issues for me.. so when i was revised to the sleeve after having it removed for 12 months... i decided that it was no ones business and i didn't need the additional drama. This time... its all about me... i am choosing to be selfish for a change and do what is in my best interests. I have decided not to hand over my power to other people as i am a sensitive person who takes things quite personally. However, my experience is exactly that. .. my experience... people in your life might be supportive... they might suprise you. It really depends what you actually want. Which way are you feeling? How have these people handled things in the past? Are they jealous? What type of people are they?
  7. Hello! Newbie over here – Even though I have been using this forum for years! I am 4 years post-op VSG. I am very happy with my weight loss and maintenance, but I never had any issues with acid reflux prior to my surgery! For the past 4 years, I have been struggling daily with my acid reflux issues. I take medication every single morning and night and without it, I am in an incredible amount of pain. I am unable to lie down or sleep properly, and this causes tension for my neck and my back. Just slightly bending down makes the food regurgitate and it’s very painful. For the past 8 months, I feel immense tightening and pressure in my chest and it is so very uncomfortable, especially when I am around people. GERD is also starting to slightly alter my voice and my singing range. I have sought to find a cure several times. I've had two endoscopies (they dilated my esophagus during the second one), and several barium swallow tests. The tests don’t show anything abnormal. I have tried so many different drugs, diets, and remedies to no resolve. I've even tried a natural medicine MD and hypnosis, to no avail. I have been reviewing some research as well as other forums where Sleeve to RNY revision patients, who had [severe] acid reflux, were cured after Bypass. I was hoping to get feedback from those of you who had VSG surgery and then converted to the RNY/bypass: Did you have acid reflux after your VSG? How severe was it? How many years did you wait before you convert? Was GERD the only reason? Did the RNY revision completely cure your GERD?

    What to ask the doctor?

Getting insurance coverage can be difficult. Generally the hospital and surgeon have staff that can assist you. Cost is generally a major concern. There are several different forms of Weight Loss Surgery (WLS). These different forms have different outcomes. In some you lose weight faster and deeper than others. Some have a higher probability of requiring revisions. (I decided that when I underwent this surgery I did not want to undergo it again.) Some forms of surgery are better suited for any co-morbitities you may have. For example I had GERD. If I got the sleeve it would only compound this problem and RNY was better suited for this condition. You might want to get briefed on the various steps you will need to go through - psych evaluation, classes, pre-op tests etc. You may want to start to attend Bariatric Surgery Support Group Meetings. They are free and generally occur monthly. Depending on the requirements of your insurance, you may need to go through a medically monitored diet and exercise program to qualify.

    Attending a Seminar, then what?

Honestly every process is different, after I attended my free siminar they sent us home with a packet that was basicaly about our weight history and such. After getting my packet they sent me to my general health doctor so I could get a check-up and to get a letter of recomendation to send to the insurance company [b/c the lapband dr. can't do it due to he would be making money off of it, and the insurance companies won't accept it]. After these steps it's really dependant on what insurance you have, and how long it takes you to do things [b/c if you are like me i have work and school and tend to put all other things off for as long as possible...i am a huge procrastinator.] with my insurance company (United Healthcare) they require a 5year weight history (for me this was the longest part of the process took me about a month and a 1/2). When I was done getting all of that together my nurse at the surgical clinic who is handeling my case put all my information into a packet which would go to the insurance company for them to review and then decide if they would cover the surgery. My nurse told me that the revision process could take about 90 days, but I recieved a call from her 3 days later and she told me I was approved. Now all I have to do is attend a meeting, and we are setteling on a final date today [more then likely april 6th]. so all together it took me about 4 or 5 months (that come and go quickly) not very long considering how long I have been unhappy and uncomfortable in my own skin due to being overweight. Hope this helps...but usually it is different for everyone, and it really stinks for those whose insurance companies require a 6 month doctor monitored diet...but remember the juice is always worth the squeze. good luck =]
  10. I've just signed up on VST because I'm thinking about getting a revision from a band to VSG. I find this thread so cute b/c you guys all found each other! That's so exciting that you get to meet each other and then will be able to talk about your experiences on VST! Good luck to you all!!! Very exciting!
  11. My surgeon (US) charges $11,999 for a sleeve. I believe he bills half the surgeon's fee for a revision, which would be $2000, so I'm guesstimating his revision fee would be about $13,999 inclusive.
  12. I've read that a regular sleeve is $10 to 25k and up in the USA. Doing a revision would increase this price.

    Stricture

I was 6 years out and had a revision roux n y on June 8. I threw up all the time. Come to find out my previous doctor left a not needed piece of intestine called a blind loop. Food was going to my new stomach and to this intestine and creating bacteria. I also had a hiatal hernia. If it wasn't for the strictures I would feel great. I am very great full my new doctor took the time to solve the problem.

Hi everyone, is the sleeve cut smaller when going to a bypass revision, I'm hoping so as a failed sleeve it has gotten bigger , stretched, any ideas??
  16. Hi everyone, I just received my insurance approval for the sleeve on Friday. I am really struggling with the decision to go forward or not. I have a good friend and her and I decided to do this journey together so we could support each other. She had a lap band years ago that failed so she was doing a revision to the sleeve. Her insurance approved hers sooner than me (different surgeon too) so she wound up going in on Oct 16 to have hers done. Well, I am sorry to report that the poor thing is STILL in the hospital, almost 1 month later! She was in the ICU for 2 weeks of that time and nearly died. She had a bowel perforation, 2 esphoghus tears, leaks, ICU delirium, and massive infections. The doctors have said that when she is able to be released she is going to require extensive physical therapy due to the weakness from being bedridden. Sitting here watching this unfold has been terrifying and needless to say, has me thinking "hell no". I am so confused 😔
  17. Here... they are not allowed to do it in one procedure.... there is a minimum wait of 3 months from band removal before you can have a revision. Basically they say it is to allow your stomach to heal and for the area around your band to go back to its original shape.
  18. I'm not telling anyone because I'm a revision from lapband to sleeve.. and a lot of people in my life are extremely judgemental on how I spend my money and feel like I wasted all this money on a lapband, that it would be foolish to get another surgery that is "unecessary" they just don't get it. 8 years of this is enough.. I am telling my co workers because they are extremely supportive and a few very close friends, most are also revision patients that I met when I originally got my band..

    DS vs Sleeve

Some people revise from the sleeve to the DS. Some revise from the sleeve to the gastric bypass. Some are perfectly happy with the sleeve alone as it does the job for them. It's hard to say whether or not you should have a DS. You need to know yourself. Can you keep a good count on your calories, etc. and watch what you eat? Because while your stomach is definitely smaller after the sleeve it does stretch somewhat as time goes by (never to its original size, though). If so, the sleeve should work well. If you're like me (a binge eater) & want to eat every 1-2 hours (Protein pretty much in the main) and worry about keeping the most weight off possible, then a DS might be right for you. However, the DS has cons along with the pros. It takes a lot of work: many, many vits/minerals per day for life, yearly or twice yearly blood work, there can be malodorous gas and/or stool (most of us watch our eating in public carefully and/or take a probiotic to keep this under control), etc. After a lot of research and decision making I felt it was the WLS for me. But it's a very personal decision and all WLS have positives and negatives.

@@betrthnever It looks like you are considering a revision from Lap-Band to RNY. Is that correct? If so, why? I ask because you say you are on the fence, and I am assuming you mean you are on the fence about getting the revision to RNY.
