Just like everything... Is a life time change... Once you do your surgery everything is different, I not that you wouldn't have a beer or two, is about making a step that will stop you from losing weight... That doesn't mean you can't have beer or alcohol ever again... It just mean, you may be able to have it every now and then but after surety nothing is the same... Let me give you an example before surgery I was a "sodas" person... So I did good my 1st 5month... But since November oh lord... I just been having sodas every now n then n guess what?!? It hurts the weight process... So!! I'm not the best to give advise, but if you can't stop n let go... Is better... Good luck

So I went to a seminar back in May that first introduced me to wls. Of all the things I heard the biggest challenge I felt was going to be the pop thing. You know...the part where you can't really have it anymore. At the time my habit was 4-8 cans a day which I've had for the past 15-20 years (I'm 30). I knew if I couldn't kick that habit I wouldn't ever be able to have the surgery. I mean I knew this was just one of many new rules we have to live by but if I couldn't do this then none of the other stuff mattered. The day of the seminar was the last day for 7 months. Over Thanksgiving I've tried pop again half scared, half curious about my reaction to it since I was so addicted to the stuff. The circumstance came about when there wasn't any water to be had at the party. Well they had water, but it was horrible tasting water and I couldn't drink it. I had half a can of pop. I've since also had a couple tastes of moscato di asti and couple more tastes of pop when there's been no alternative. The result is unexpectedly happy. I don't really like too much of it. The bubbles are too much and it burns going down and then I get all burpy. I can't help but laugh about it since I really thought I'd have something like an alcoholics reaction to their favorite drink, one taste and that would be the end of sobriety for a while. I can't believe I really prefer water but I do. The reverse osmosis machine at our house is wonderfully helpful since it gets a lot of the funny tastes out of our well water. It's been well worth the price. i'm preop but I do believe this is an nsv!

I'm 4 weeks out today and last monday i was talking to my surgeon and asked him and said that i actually could have a drink if i wanted to but the rememeber that alcohol is just empty calories so to be carefull and to also remember that i might get drunk faster now but he said that i actually can do it... Im not a big drinker but thursday i went to visit a friend and she was drinking wine so i had a bit and it was fine but i drank less than 2 ounces.. Yerterday at a party this guy insisted on getting me a drink so i got a vodka and orange juice and had like 2 sips and left it there, i just got it so that he would stop bugging me about not drinking...anyway i had like 2 sips and didnt really want anymore and got really sleepy after that..

On thanksgiving I was 4 weeks out my doc said non carbonated alcohol was fine. Hard boiled eggs are also on my soft foods list. If you drink your protein shakes calories don't matter, you will lose fat and keep muscle. I get about 500-1000 calories a day, just depending on the day but 10 days out I barely ate anything.

I get really bad pain in my left shoulder/neck if I end up eating too much or too fast. Instead of getting a full tummy the pain is reflected through to my shoulder and neck. My doctor told me if I didn't have the lapband, instead of getting shoulder or neck pain I would probably have really bad heartburn/reflux/indigestion. I've never had any of those problems before, but I assume my neck pain is better than getting that Not sure if it's the same pain as you, but just thought I'd share incase someone else gets this pain. I also get unbearable pains in my arms when I drink alcohol, to the point of laying on the bathroom floor crying and screaming for about 6 hours lol. It's because my body wants to throw up the alcohol, or just from bad reflux, but the lapband stops it and reflects the pain into my arms. So I rarely drink, and when I do I prepare myself to deal with a lotttt of pain lol. I went to my normal doctor about these problems heaps for like a year thinking it was something major like blood clots, and then I saw a new doctor when my normal doctor was away and he knew straight away both problems were lapband related

When is it ok to have a drink? I'm 10 wks out. I know every dr has their own opinions . What do you think? How have you done, if you've had it?

two months should be your minimum. You are too early. Your stomach is not healed (the incision) and if you can picture pouring alcohol on a fresh wound....that's basically what you would be doing. I am a huge wine fan, but even I waited two months (actually 3 but who's counting). Really, it's not a good idea and you also don't know how it will effect you. The last thing you want to do is find out it makes you drunk quickly at a company party!!!!

I have tried NOW brand Better Stevia. It is a liquid form and I have not had any experience with it being bitter. Swerve is an Erythritol sweetener, which is a type of sugar alcohol, but it is not suppose to give the tummy troubles and I have read good things about it. And just an FYI, even with the sleeve you can dump. It is not common, but it can happen.

Is Chardonnay considered a clear liquid?
Ailly replied to Raven21's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Typically want to avoid alcohol prior to surgery. For one you are attempting to shrink your liver, making it process alcohol, is making it work harder. Alcohol also dehydrates you which is exactly the opposite of what you want to be doing. Even just a glass.. its best to avoid. -
Carb cycling and alcohol
kyrasgrandma replied to dalia93's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Do you really need 3 glasses. How about having one glass and nursing it all night. That way you will have a drink in front of you and you wont be tipsy enough to eat too much. I find 1 glass of wine is way too much for me now that I have my band. Since I am not eating as much as I used to the alcohol affects me faster. -
Carb cycling and alcohol

Don't know if you'll gain weight, but ALL alcohol turns into carbs...alcohol is transformed into sugar in our bodies. -

I just got back from the doc's office on Monday 12/3, and he said I am cleared for alcohol and basically anything I want to eat that agrees with me, which is everything. I have had a few glasses of wine and I am still losing weight. I don't drink alot though, I have to be up early for work and hate that icky feeling in the morning, so I'm good with my one or two glasses on a Friday or Saturday. I have not had any side effects from the alcohol, I don't get drunk and I don't act weird, I feel the same as I did pre-surgery.

Well, my insurance is blue cross blue shield. My requirements were 3 months on a dietitian monitored diet, 2 years (min.) weight history, Post-op preparation classes, and a bmi of 35 or higher. That would have been ok... But i started out in march with Dr. David Kim... I do not recommend anyone to his office. #Hurley911 - Some of the red tape/hoops I had to go through were nicotine and alcohol screening and things like that. The other problem I had was that after doing all the requirements for not only my insurance but my doctor... They stopped contacting me and i was forced to change surgeons. It has been a very long journey but it will be worth it when I finally get sleeved.

I had my first post op appointment today. I was disappointed at first when a nurse told me that I would not be able to swim for 6 weeks. I leave for a 7 night cruise in two days! After my doctor looked at my stomach, he advised me that my wounds were completely closed and healed. I was cleared to swim. I was so happy! I am on soft foods. I am so tired of Protein. The taste and smell makes me sick! I will not be able to eat much on this cruise or drink any alcohol, but I will still have a good time enjoying the rest and relaxation in the sun.

Aafter the doc gets the rash cleared up you can use bath and body works spray ( mostly alcohol) in all of the crease areas 2x a day. It keeps bacteria at bay plus you smell good.

What To Order At Restaurants, Business Trips
920amy replied to 39m's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am also in a very 'business eating' work environment, I do Mortgages, and very often take Realtors and clients out. I haven't had to face it much yet, as I'm only one month out, but I have found the same sentiments that are echoed throughout this thread to be true. No one really notices how much I do or don't eat since they themselves are focused on their own eating. As the holidays are getting close, I plan to get through Holiday parties by nominating myself as the DD< so I can pass on alcohol withoout many side glances, I had a business luncheon today with my womens group, had french onion soup with no bread in it and light cheese, the cheese sank to the bottom where it sat. I ordered an entree which I silently slipped into a box and took to my father, and for dessert I ordered took a few small bites and sent the rest back, no one even blinked about it. The I'm not feeling well, I just had a big breakfast/lunch have seemed to work fine if anyone does inquire. Also, with the New Year coming around, it would be easy to tell people that you are doing a strict diet for New Years, few people question strong New Years convictions! Good luck to you! -
I got a late start on my pre-op diet, started about 9 days before surgery, 2 Protein shakes and small dinner a day. I lost about 9 lbs. I'll be honest, I love margaritas, I mean just like people like their beer. I slowed up on them pre-op... and have not missed them at all post-op (1 week)!! Unbelievable!! Haven't even thought about 'em!! My husband still has his beer after work, doesn't faze me. Hope it's the same for you, cuz I've heard the same thing... No alcohol. Good luck!! Post Op September Sleevers, Roll Call
deltatrans44 replied to newgrandmother's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes definitely scary. Ended up going to ER Saturday. Was there 8 hours while they did 4 different test. They were originally thinking blood clot from surgery was effecting my heart. But all 4 tests came back fine. So the only thing left was to monitor. They went away and tuesday I had a cocktail if tequila n lime juice and there they (palpitations) were again. Sooo needless to say-no alcohol for me anymore for a long while. -
If you truly enjoy alcohol, then go for it. I would suggest being highly aware of the new way it gets processed. Everything in balance - the key is finding that new balance.
-
Just remember that meds will act like alcohol does when your stomach is empty(emptyish). Their effect increases. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but just wanted to help.

Dont judge but I could only wait alittle over a month after surgery to try alcohol. I can say that the buzz hits me alot sooner but its not much different than before. I regularly drink cherry vodka mixed with liquid ice and ive only had one blackout but Chippendales were in town. Oops.
