Negative comments from family members
fourmonthspreop posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I just need to vent because im so upset about this sometimes. Does anyone deal with negative comments from family members about your surgery? It's not so much about the fact that I got surgery but moreso constant questioning of my success. Like they're always like "what's gonna stop you from just gaining it all back?" "You might just go back to your old habits." "How are things gonna be any different this time?" "You got to the point of needing weight loss surgery to lose weight so how can you be successful?" That's actually what my brother just said to me and it made me so sad and upset. I've been working so hard to do it right this time but they just discredit me like it's another half baked idea. I wish they'd just tell me I got this and not question my dedication. I put in so much work to get where I am both mentally and physically. I made a comment about making sugar free brownie dip for my birthday and my family member said "isn't that what got you to this point in the first place, wanting to eat things like that?" And it just broke me like I'm not allowed to still celebrate things with food. The all or nothing mindset is what drove my binge eating for years. All I want is to have a healthy relationship with all food and I'm finally in a place where I feel like I can, and then these comments are made. They make me feel like a failure or that I'm thinking incorrectly. I know deep down how far I've come but some days it really gets to me and tears me down. I'm sorry at this point I'm just venting. I just wish they'd recognize my successes and not constantly question my ability. Ughhhh Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

No, super fast- the MGB on average gives greater weightloss than both sleeve and RNY. No problems keeping it off for now, no, but I'm prepared for the 5-10 lbs most people gain back after reaching the lowest weight. -
Some people like to try to start some of the things you will need to do post op now like making sure you get in 64 oz of water, no water 30 minutes before or after food, protein first (measure your protein your doctor will tell you how much you will need), eat much slower, and smaller bites. Also, it’s easier for some people if you wean yourself off caffeine, sugar and carbs before the pre op diet. Caffeine is depending of if you have to go off of it (doctors vary on this) a great deal. You don’t have to do any of this if you don’t want to and you have plenty of time to do it if you do but some like to and many have lost a pretty big chunk of weight while waiting on surgery that is just less you have to lose afterwards.

Let's just say if women could build chest like we can in the fly machine, the line for it would be a lot longer. Also, mini brag, I've graduated to free weights now and I just walk into that area like I belong there. I kinda wanna say 'HEY GYM BROS, I JUST LOST 160+ LBS, CAN YOU TELL I DON'T BELONG WITH YOU?' but I think they wouldn't really care.

I also paid out of pocket. I then got GERD and an upper endoscopy showed that I had a hiatal hernia. I needed a second surgery. I could either get a Linx device put in, have a hiatal hernia surgery or have a bypass. since these surgeries were now medically necessary to fix an issue they were covered. I had the hiatal hernia surgery and paid about $400 total. Don't let the possibility of a side effect scare you!! Just because the first surgery is not covered does not mean the second won't be. I could have gotten any of the three surgeries covered and went with the one that worked best with my situation. Losing weight over the past 8+ months makes the issues I dealt with more than worth it. Edit: BTW, OTC medication helped alleviate all the acid reflux symptoms. Then, the reflux was gone immediately after the HH surgery. -

When researching studies about any weight loss surgery, it helps to find studies that are recent. Within a year or two published. Otherwise, you might not get the most up to date, accurate data. One of the studies posted was from 2015. That seems a bit old, and the data may have changed from 2015. That's almost 7 years old. -

It’s a little bit like reading product reviews before buying something. A lot of people will only do a review if they are unhappy. I imagine there are thousands of people who have never had one problem with reflux after the sleeve and thousands with reflux who have never had any surgery. There’s no guarantee as far as if you will or not. I didn’t have trouble with it from my sleeve until I regained weight. It was probably more weight related than sleeve related. I would postpone until you are sure because all surgery causes changes and you don’t have a lot of control of whether a side effect happens to you. -
Pre-op diet, hungry, not losing weight
lizonaplane replied to JessiPhoenix's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only lost 1 lb on the pre-op diet. Like you, I was able to eat "real" food, just very low carb and low fat. I had already lost almost 50 lbs, so that is likely why I didn't lose much - I had already lost the weight that comes off quickly (AKA water weight). I see that your surgery is today; hope you're feeling okay. -
Pouch reset is not a real thing. It's a myth. To OP, I'm so sorry you're having such a hard time. It's very hard to deal with trauma and lose weight at the same time. You can lose the weight again, but make sure you're in a good place and don't push yourself too hard while you are still recovering. Hopefully you have a therapist who is experienced with food issues. Your physical therapist is the best person to help you figure out what exercises you are able to do, but no amount of exercise can undo a bad diet. I would recommend you start by TRACKING what you're eating. Weigh and measure your food and be honest and complete in your food log. Then, focus on the basics: lean protein, vegetables, and complex carbs and fruit last (try to limit sweets, but you don't have to be 100% perfect; just 80-90% of the time!) Good luck to you!

If you are very heavy, you need a lot more calories to NOT be in a calorie deficit. 2800 calories would be if a thin person ran a marathon. If you are heavier, you burn more calories with exercise. Plus, I didn't say it was all fat. When people first start losing weight there is a lot of water loss.

Only you can decide if the risks are worth the payoff. It is especially acute when you are self pay, which I understand because I also was self pay. I'm also afraid of GERD, but the risk for me is worth the payoff. But, I have many weight related issues and knew the surgery was key for me making a major change. I needed to in order to literally save my life and make it past 60. I also wasn't comfortable with bypass, so I am taking a calculated risk. I know that GERD is a serious risk, but will deal with that if it comes. I'll be honest - if I were your BMI I am not sure what my choice would have been but this choice is so individual it is hard to give good advice. I would definitely have a frank and honest conversation with your surgical team regarding potential risks vs. payoff. If you still are nervous, then I wouldn't do it. Maybe give yourself time to process things, and reassess in a few months. This surgery really requires that you are mentally ready for it, so if you aren't, don't do it. Good luck! -
Introduction, First appointment tomorrow
ShoppGirl replied to ThinIce's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am a year out and I don’t like all the attention about my weight either. The novelty wears off though and people stop commenting about it. When they say that they think you have lost enough and not to get too small, though, just say that you are working with a doctor and you will stick to their advise about what weight is healthy for you. Being a private person too I totally get it but it’s worth going through that to get all the benefits that weight loss brings. -

Pants began to fall down in the middle of the supermarket and I had to walk out holding them up. Did I lose weight in the detergent aisle? -
I had to wait 8 months to get my surgery, It seemed so long but I wasn't give a date until 6 weeks before the event. Its out of your control so you just have to do what you can to get by. I found this forum and in my free time , I picked a date in the last 20 years and started reading the posts from then on. I gained so much knowledge, it gave me confidence. I researched menus for all the stages and prepared my home for the things I would need, which wasnt much. It will soon pass..

I’m having the same procedure that my dad had 17 years ago only I’m a lot smaller than he was. I know it needs to be a lifestyle change or else I’ll gain it back like he did. 🙏 Praying for strength -

I used to be on here back in 2012, I had the Lap Band done, but last year had to have it removed. Not sure if it was Covid or all the issues I had before and after surgery this past year but I have now ended with Gastroparesis. Or slow/ delayed emptying. My Gastro is sending me to weight loss surgery as I think he said the Bypass seems to help the problem. I fit the bill for weight loss surgery with out this issue, BMI, diabetes etc. . My question involves digestion. Does anyone know how it affects the bowels ? I don’t want to live in the bathroom . Did that almost a year Now try to eat soft foods that will digest quickly and hopefully not cause staying in the John. It seems if you only eat a cupful - it would move in a few minutes if you are missing part of your intestines. I’m not sure, I would appreciate any information on this. Thanks

Congratulations I’m 8 days away. I’ve lost 6 pounds so far but gain two due to my period coming ugh. I need it to be over before my surgery. One less thing to worry about. -
Imagine if people didn't weight themselves in week 3.

Thanks for the reply. I’m a little over a year out now and wear compression shirts pretty much everyday. Keeps my body from clapping for me as I run or do any kinds of active movement. While I enjoy the encouragement of people clapping for me. Not a huge fan of my own flabby skin doing the clapping. I ended up going with Under armor brand most of the time and now adidas. We have a outlet stores near us as well as shopping at TJMax for them. I started with 2x sizes and like you said they got to big pretty quick as I lost weight. In a year I lost 130lbs and went from needing 2x or bigger compression shirts to wearing L now. And at $20 a shirt that adds up quick. My issue at first was smell. But we soak them in vinegar before washing now and that helps a ton.

My hair was pretty much a casualty of WLS. I lost most of my hair and it hasn't grown back. My surgeon speculates that my hair fell out due to the normal telogen effluvium that comes with drastic weight loss. Then it didn't grow back due to age-related hair loss I would have had anyway (I'm 57). So the surgey sped up the hair loss and I lost it all at once, rather than gradually over a couple of years. But my experience is unusual and I wouldn't take back the 130 pounds I've lost to get my hair back!
