    Stomach Growling

You poor thing. I am petrified of potatoes or anything starchy. Cottage cheese and veggie meatballs (I am a vegetarian) have been my friend. They crew up and crumble better then meat so I think that helps me.

    Having some trouble...

This is very interesting. I wonder if pre surgery I was Protein deficient. Even during periods of pre op life when I logged, the focus was only on calories. I had never given protein intake a second thought. Probably didn't help my already out of control appetite. As a vegetarian, meeting protein goals post op has been like a full time job. I have learned a whole new way of meal prep and can make some awesome mock meat now. One of the million advantages of losing weight is that my minimum protein goal has dropped to 45g per day, so much more manageable and most days I easily exceed that.

    Dumping question...

I haven't dumped except during the soft food stages when I was ok'd to eat Bariatric vegetarian chili. It was just this side of hell. Not something you want to go looking for. I have kind of poked at that bear a few times like tasting a bite of cake(it was gross btw) and it didn't do anything to me. I've had pasta sauce that was over my 4g of sugar limit given to me by my NUT and still no dumping. Not all people dump so you cannot count on that safety net. You have to just go knowing that it "may" be a possibility, but don't go poking for how much you can get away with before it happens. When I recognized my behavior I made changes so I don't go testing to see what I can get away with again. It's not very beneficial in the long haul to be trying to defeat or push the limits of our surgeries.

    TMI? No such thing.

You know, I've thought about this for awhile after reading so many struggle. I think more research needs to be done on the post-WLS nutrition plan, particularly looking at whether we really need all of the Protein. Now it's probably necessary right after surgery (and in your case BV since you are adding so much lean muscle mass), but I wonder at what point in the process does the "protein first" mentality need to end? I had major issues in this department for the first few weeks. My surgeon advocates for a mostly vegetarian/vegan diet, so once I got to solid foods it has been smooth sailing ever since. I eat very clean... lots of raw fruits and veggies at every meal so with all of the fiber I consume, it's no wonder I'm good.

    Food Obsession

The yoga ashram is that i have been going to for years is the Sivananda Ashram Retreat in the Bahamas. It's located just down the beach from Atlantis but is a million miles away in terms of experience. If you google it it will give you a year long calendar of weekends and speakers. It's for people of all faiths btw- meaning not strictly for Hindus. There is a set daily schedule- up at 5:30, meditation, yoga on a beautiful beach platform (all levels even newbies welcome) then brunch. It's all vegetarian, super clean no caffeine food. Delish. After brunch you are free to listen to a speaker, snorkel, hang in a hammock or do some karma yoga. At 4 there is another yoga class, followed by the second meal of the day at 6. Meditation at the temple at 7:30. Lights out by 10. They have a variety of accommodations for every budget- you can stay in a private room, share a room, they even have super fancy tents set up if that's what you are into. It's not a spa by any means but they do offer body work and amazing massages that are really reasonable. It's kinda like a hidden paradise. I love that there are people from all over the world, all ages. Like i said, great place to set a reset button. If you go let me know- I'm always looking for an excuse to go!!! Food Obsession

Wow it sounds like you have a lot going on and are stuck in a rough patch. Your weight loss is AMAZING so it makes me sad that you are obsessing over food. But I get it. I too have been treated for anxiety and depression for years but don't think weight loss is going to magically make it go away (my doctor suggested same thing- kinda scary how they glaze right over the head stuff part huh?) and I'm trying very hard to keep my little brain busy. I'm a huge reader and wow, does that help!!! I'm reading an author by the name of Jen Lamcaster. She has several books starting with Bright Lights, Big Ass. I literally cry tears when reading it because she's got so many issues (weight being one of them) and her approach to life is so different than mine it kinda wakes me up, ya know? She has a huge ego and mouth to match and rises to the top of her career when she comes crashing down and learns a whole heap of humility. I don't know, the Jen Books just take my mind off my stuff even for a moment and I can get a better perspective of what's what. I've recommended her to bunches of women and they all say the same thing. Gosh girl... 139 down and still dealing with obsession- it just goes to show how hard we are on ourselves don't you think? I do and it makes me so sad and frustrated!! And I've noticed sometimes instead of just a kind word people want to turn everything INTO something huge. Ugh. So other than the Jen Books have you ever taken a yoga class? They are everywhere and sometimes you can find a teacher who is good enough to teach the basics (not all this crazy gym yoga) breathing, being mindful, stretching they can all be super empowering. For the past 10 years i go to an ashram in the Bahamas for a few days by myself and hit the reset button. It's great because there are people there from all over the world and no one judges, they are just there to take a step back from their crazy lives and prioritize. Plus it's stunning and relatively inexpensive! And there are only 2 meals a day and they are yummy vegetarian which i normally don't go for but there, it's amazing!!! I always come back a few pounds down and leave something that's been bothering me (maybe a bad habit) there on the beautiful beach on Paradise island. I trust the waves to take care of it. . Keep in touch and let me know how you are feeling, ok? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Greetings from Australia... freaking out!

Absolutely. Feeling of hunger goes away when i eat, no reflux and not taking the meds. Got off the drugs asap out of hospital. Detoxing from them was the worst. Re sleeve stretching, apparently it relaxes so increases marginally in size but it cannot be stretched, HOWEVER if you put the wrong food in it, you will gain weight. Yesterday i found i could eat soft chees triangles so i ate 4 during the day and put on 500grams. So lesson is have 1 or 2 triangles and no more. I was eating cheese because at the moment my protein is medium as i am a vegetarian and have a post op aversion to protein shakes, powder, anything artificual. ATM i am eating hummus with some avocado blended in. And thinking of the glass of wine I am not having, lol.
  8. Hi everyone, my name is Kayla. I'm a 30 year old musician, singer, wife, and mother. My Gastric sleeve procedure is scheduled for 4/27. I wasn't always as big as I am. (HW:314) in fact, when I met my husband nearly 12 years ago, I weighed 129lbs. At 5'8" that's kind of the low end weight-wise, but I wasn't healthy. Once I felt safe and loved, I let go and started eating again... Like mad. I ate on 150lbs in two years... I went up and down from there. So for the last decade, I've been hovering, on average, between 280 and 300. I did get down to 220 after becoming a vegetarian for a year and a half after a bad case of food poisoning (as with many of us, I have some issues that manifest in my strange relationship with food). When I got pregnant, my body demanded meat. By delivery, I was 305lbs. I dropped about 20lbs and put it back on. My body began to feel major consequences of all the weight. I stopped playing quidditch and indoor soccer which I had done up to last year. Finally, as my son began running faster and faster, I decided I wanted to keep up with him and to do the stuff he wanted to do... I went into cooper bariatric on October 22nd, 2015. They told me I had to be nicotine free for 4 months, I quit on the 23rd. Since then, I have completed all the hoop-jumping and here I am, drinking only Protein shakes and Clear liquids. As a performer, it's hard to look at myself and then present what I feel is inadequate, to others. I have been learning, albeit slowly, to love myself. I wrote a song to fluff myself up. If you want to hear it or see the video, I'm happy to post a link, but I don't want to assume. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Bread and rice?

Yeah and remember there's a fair amount of us vegetarian bariatric folks too! So legumes of course HAVE to be part of the diet, I eat black bean soups, baba ganoush, chiles, (and I'm 9 weeks out) and lentils...
  10. First time posting here, but I've been lurking for awhile. I'm self-pay and scheduled with Dr. Illan in Mexico for May 12. Feeling very calm and not nervous about the surgery itself...but I worry that I'll be the one this doesn't work for. Has anyone else felt that way?? About me 5'2", 47 years old, 295 pounds. I've been overweight since I was maybe 10 or so. Childhood pictures show a normal-sized child, but I don't remember not being fat. I was over 200 in high school, probably 250 or so before/after my two pregnancies, and been 275-295 for the last 15-20 years. That's were my weight seems to want to be; on the one hand, I can pretty much eat whatever, and I don't go up anymore; but on the other hand, it's pretty impossible to lose anything, and it always resettles in the 275-295 range. I've been a vegan/vegetarian for over 10 years (first 5 vegan, now vegetarian). Before that I did Atkins and lost 80 pounds (but was also pretty much starving myself...it was Atkins in name only). Since then, I've done WW, superfood diets, blah blah blah. You know the drill. I have Hashimoto's, which I'm sure plays a role in all this (I was diagnosed at hypothyroid about 16 years ago, and Hashi's about 5 years ago). I am treated properly for my thyroid and it is technically right where it should be. I'm excited about having the sleeve because I feel like, from everything I've read, this will be the tool that gets me where I want to be. I love to eat healthy foods (though I eat bad ones, too, for sure), and wish I could be more active without the pain, so in theory this should all work for me. But...I can't picture it. I don't know what it's like to be a healthy weight. What if my body can't do that, no matter how hard I try (so far it hasn't, afterall!). I feel like this is my last chance, so what if it doesn't work? These are my worries :/ I'll be the one it doesn't work for... My goals are really just to be healthier, to avoid diabetes (I'm pre-diabetic now) and heart disease, to be able to go backpacking and walking and do all the things I want to do. I have a vague idea that I'll be able to fit into smaller clothes, and that would be fun (I've never in my life bought something that was actually cool or fun to wear or fashionable). I hope to lose a lot of weight, and I'm 100% willing to do the work. But....I've done the work before and been frustrated when nothing happens. So that is my worry and my fear. Has anyone else ever felt that way? Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my rambles...
  11. I am only 10 days post op, NUT has me on the third week of my diet plan already which means I can have more variety in my food & I am a great cook so I know there are endless opportunities but I can't eat much so in order to get all of my Protein I am basically eating meat. I'm tired of meat .....I'm tired of Protein shakes. I have to get in 90-113 grams of protein but all I want is some vegetables... Kale, spinach, roasted carrots something else!!!! I know how important protein is but if I get all my protein from shakes I'm too full for anything else and if I get it from meat same thing. does anyone have suggestions for vegan or vegetarian protein sources ???? I'm just in dire need of something else. I can not be bored this soon. ..... Sent from my Z970 using the BariatricPal App
  12. Going out to dinner can be a challenge. Almost every place has a variety of things that are fine to eat but my head wants so many things I shouldn't have! So, my discipline still needs some work. I still need to work on my head hunger. Getting enough exercise in is also a problem but I am taking that one day at a time and trying to get in my exercise. I always have good intentions but I let things get in the way! lol. There are times that I miss a really bad-for-you meal but I also don't want to be as large as I was so I just keep telling myself that it is worth it. And it is, but somedays, the thoughts of some old favorite foods just stick in my head. But, I'm still learning, even 2 years out, what to do "instead" of other things. I would say that family and friends "think" they are being supportive but really, not so much. I recently went out with some friends to an event at the museum. One kept saying how she was craving dumplings at the Dumpling house and how we had to go there. We finally did and I discovered that there really wasn't anything I could eat. I got the egg drop Soup but was really angry about this. I didn't say anything but certainly wasn't happy. Also, in my group of friends, one is a vegetarian, one doesn't eat seafood, and when we try to find a place to go eat, I've been told that I'm the problem one. ?? So, not as supportive as they think they are. But, in the end, it's all good!!

Look under Food and Nutrition. I believe that there is a subforum for vegetarians.
  15. Can anyone direct me to where I can find plant based meal plans for WLS patients? Im vegetarian, but I really don't want to have to eat dairy and Protein shakes every day. I know a plant based diet is much healthier. Please let me know If you know of anything! Sent from my SM-G900T using the BariatricPal App
  16. @ Sue Brat Kee Ashe You are right, I didnt mention my diet. I went for 7 years vegetarian, gluten free and did great. With the move, the depression I did fall off many wagons. I totally understand what i did wrong. it just got SO FAR out of my control that I felt it was insurmountable. I'm climbing up out of that damn hole.

Hi I'm having surgery may 3 and in also a vegetarian so I'm very interested in what works well for you and hoping to maybe snaffle a few ideas for nice foods Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  18. I have been researching for a while about taking this tool (sleeve) to another level by incorporating a positive lifestyle change due to the fact that I rarely eat meats or consume any animal products. I will be talking to my dietician about this next month but wanted to get a head start on any suggestions from this wonderful and helpful community. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. I've only told a very select group, not even my brother knows, and neither does my best friend as even though I love her dearly I know she would tell someone. Helps that she lives 3 hours away from me. I had started losing weight in December and people at work were noticing before I had my surgery (3weeks post op now) and I was truthful and said I was being careful with what I ate and trying to eat less, so that story can still continue. I just told people I was having surgery, a few tries to pry and ask "is everything ok?" Hoping I'd spill the Beans, but I'd just smile and say yes it will be thanks. That closed the door on any further conversation about it. My surgeon found a hernia and repaired it whilst I was under, so I will be able to use that as my story if I really am pressed to. And we have a big family wedding coming up at end of April, I've opted for the vegetarian option, and when I don't eat a lot of it I'll just say I'm not feeling 100% I have a bit of a funny tummy and hope for the best! The transition to vegetarianism…

My surgeon (Garth Davis) advocates a switch to vegan/vegetarian diet... or as close to it as you can do. He has a book out, Proteinaholic, and there are a bunch of good vegan/vegetarian recipes in it that I find WLS friendly. I'm not off meat/dairy 100%, but I'd say 90%+ of my daily caloric intake is plant based... and when I have meat, it's usually lean poultry or fish. Here's a recipe for quinoa with black Beans that I make often. I like to eat it plain with hot sauce, or as a salad topping... I imagine it'd be good in some sort of low carb wrap. If you eat dairy, you could up the Protein with some cheese or plain greek yogurt. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/49552/quinoa-and-black-beans/

    The transition to vegetarianism…

I'm not a vegetarian, but I don't really have any big craving for meat on a regular basis. I like turkey burgers and chicken sandwiches, but past that it's just not something I really think about eating. Although it isn't high Protein, you can replace Pasta with zucchini noodles if you use the Vegetti (it's like $10 on Amazon). I like that swap. You can also add tofu into tomato sauce and that adds protein on top of the veggie noodles. I like cauliflower pizza too, where you can get a reasonable amount of protein from the cheese and egg that are included in the crust recipe and you can always use a non-meat protein as a topping. I've recently started drinking a lot of milk (which is mostly because I make skinny macchiatos at home) and the Fair Life milk has a ton of protein, no fat in the skim version, and also a lot of Calcium. There are ways to be a vegetarian and still get enough protein, you just have to be creative.
