  1. I'm a relative newbie too, and had my bypass surgery on June 6. My surgeon's group is fairly aggressive in terms of the phases of diet but of course, I pushed beyond the envelope- had some shredded turkey leg that I deskinned and deboned on the first day I was allowed to eat "regular" food. It was too much volume and probably too difficult to digest at that point and I had to ride it out. I was frothing or foaming (aka "foamies"), had I been able to vomit I would have felt much better but couldn't. So, I walked around the house, found a spot on a sofa with pillows plopped around me and eventually fell asleep sitting up (which I can never do normally). It was exhausting. But it was like a temporary blockage that cleared. After that, I decided to be more conservative in my approach to food- both portions and types. I still have not done much red meat, though I'm a carnivore. And I've regulated my portions, erring on the side of "less." I was doing eggs for a while, was told scrambled was riskier than other types for some reason, but right now, eggs simply don't appeal to me.

mortality rate on bypass (at least when I had it eight years ago) is 0.3% It's even lower on sleeve (I don't remember the exact stat on that since I wasn't interested in sleeve). That means you have at least a 99.7% chance of NOT dying. That's better than a lot of other common surgeries, like hip or knee replacements. stop reading social media. I was doing that as well before my surgery and had to make myself stop. Major complications are rare. You just hear about them more because people post about those, looking for advice and support. The jillions of people who don't have them generally don't post that everything is hunky-dory. I had two strictures after my bypass. Easy fix. The PA in my bariatric clinic said those are the most common complication after bypass - and that about 5% of bypassers experience them. I personally wouldn't call something that happens to 5% of people "common", but that does give you an idea of how common complications are. Most complications, when they do happen, are minor and easily treatable or "fixable". The ones you mentioned about people carrying around bags for vomiting, etc - that's got to be incredibly rare. Spend some time here on BP or similar forums (like Obesity Help) rather than Facebook groups. I've been on here for nine years and have never heard of people carrying around barf bags because they vomit so much. I think you'll find this site will give you a much better picture of post-op life.

Have a big dummy spit. It is hard and it is awful. You have been set up by society two ways. Society sets us up by having a system that dangles so many tempting foods in our face while at the same time limits our normal everyday movement by having cars and computers machines that do the heavy lifting for us. No manual labor for us. Many people are chronically overweight but are a victim of our modern society. Our metabolism has changed. Our bodies are hard wired to retain fat in order so that we can survive in times of famine. You are allowed to be angry. You got lots of help from society to be where you are. So while is is important to acknowledge our own behaviours we had so much help from our environment, Obesity is a chronic modern day disease. BUT..... (You knew this was coming).... You can make a choice to put self care strategies into place. Stop treating your body like a trash can. Your body has a way to heal itself with your help. You can give your body a better chance. It will be okay. If you google search Dr V Masterclass on youtube you can find some stellar info on this journey. I want to encourage you to care about yourself and your future. In your post you mentioned giving up certain foods or having sugar free products. This is a new road for us and no two journeys are the same. I thought I would not be able to have chocolate any more after having my RNY bypass. Turns out that I can still enjoy chocolate but in much smaller amounts. Not a big sacrifice. I can still eat pretty much everything I used to eat, but again in smaller amount. Many people lose hair after this OP but not all do. I didnt. Reading about this journey in a pamphlet or on social media is one thing. Things might or might not happen. Only by doing this will you find out what is is really like for you and what issues you may or may not have. Having a medical procedure is one thing. It is another ball game to address reasons of why we eat and getting some psychological help. A medical procedure like this Is just an effective tool to lose the weight but being successful requires a combination of physical and psychological work. Life is so much easier now that I have shed some weight. I can walk further. I can take care of my physical needs. I feel so much better and am off my diabetes medication and bp medication and off my reflux meds. I dont have to be scared anymore about breaking chairs. I feel better in myself. Be mad and move past it. Get ready to love yourself.
  4. I agree with everything Arabesque said. Lots of us have issues with eggs the first few weeks or months out. I'd lay off them for awhile. For most of us, it's just temporary. only about 30% of bypassers dump. I never have - and I know lots of others who never have. If you turn out to be a dumper, you can prevent it by limiting the amount of sugar you eat at one sitting (some people dump on fat - so for those folks, they have to limit the amount of fat they eat at one sitting). That egg you ate definitely wasn't dumping - it was just the infamous egg intolerance.

    Malnutrition?

yep. I had my bypass over eight years ago. I'm healthier now in my 60s than I was in my 30s or 40s. And malnutrition shouldn't be a problem as long as you take your supplements as directed. My bloodwork is always great!

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

I had the bypass on the 9th and I’m doing pretty good. Only issue is a seroma under one of my incisions but surgeons office says it’s normal and my body should absorb it. It is a little uncomfortable when I sleep but I slept with a waist trainer last night and that helped immensely!

I’m scheduled for gastric bypass on Sept 6th.
  11. lol no. If you look at my signature, you can see my weight loss progression. And my username lets you know I had a sleeve and revised it to a bypass
  12. Hi everyone, I’m new here & hope ur all doing well. I had gastric bypass on 8/15. I did well overall. I had never been under general so that was a bit off putting when it was hard to take deep breaths after. They jumped me right into stage 2 and sent me home the next day. I’ve been meeting my fluid goals and doing mostly ok on my foods bc I’m good about eating super slow. I had a couple of unpleasant experiences. One was dehydration bc I took an extended shower and I must have missed my timer-that was scary. The other was that my husband measured the baby food a little over 1/4 and I felt overly full. ffwd to today. I was excited to begin stage 3 since I’d be taking my vitamins & trying textures. I was told to have a poached egg & 1/2 cup greek yogurt for breakfast (seemed like a lot but ok I’d try). The egg took forever but I ate it (this was around 7:45 am).The yogurt was not going to happen but I thought it could wait. I soon started to feel horrible. I felt (still 3:15 pm)feel like I ate a truck of concrete. I hear gurgling noises and even water feels like I can barely take it in. I called and they tell me I need to “wait it out” (??) Nurse says I should have eaten the egg in 1/4 increments ( I was never told this), as I said it took me forever. She told me to chew a Gas-X and use a phenergan suppository for nausea. She told me she is not so worried about how much (or little) I eat today, but I must stay hydrated. TBH, I can’t think of eating a bite! I am terrified of that “dumping” syndrome. Has this happened to anyone here? I have other health issues-I have MS. This is stressing me out & I can’t even rest bc I am so uncomfortable. Can anyone share wisdom and/or hope that this will pass & improve? I am feeling fearful & wondering if this was a bad decision Thanks for reading my long msg Emme

    Malnutrition?

Hi everyone, so I'm finally on the list for WLS in the UK! I met with my surgeon and he said I should be getting my surgery this year . I chose the gastric bypass because I'm pre diabetic my surgeon said this would suit me better, I'm a little worried of malnutrition, I know I will be on Vitamins for the rest of my life, can I live a healthy life style with the bypass?

    Gastric bypass over 20 years

I had the revision to bypass and I wish I had just done the bypass to begin with. I can definitely tell you things are a lot different now than they were 20 years ago. I have no dumping at all (was hoping I would, but nope) but I have virtually no hunger, which I love. There was almost no down time, almost no pain, and there's a HARD STOP when eating. No wiggle room like with the sleeve. The bypass is really the best surgery there is. In my humble opinion.

I'm scheduled for bypass on Sept 7th....I start my 7 day pre-op diet Thursday. I was a little anxious about doing the liquid diet but my surgeon has a different plan. i will be having a protein shake for breakfast, one serving of fruit and a light Greek yogurt for mid morning snack, protein shake for lunch, a string cheese or hard boiled egg for mid afternoon snack, dinner is a lean cuisine or healthy choice frozen entree with a good source of protein (approx 300 cal) or 3oz of lean meat/fish and a serving of non starchy veg and an evening snack of a string cheese or hard boiled egg, and drink a minimum of 64oz of water. No liquid diet at all!

    Gastric bypass over 20 years

  19. I'm wondering if anyone can suggest some kind of food/snack/supplement that will give me a quick energy boost. I drink a protein shake that has caffeine (equivalent to 1 cup of coffee) once a day for breakfast. Sometimes, though, later in the evening, I feel a drop in my energy. I'm trying to keep my cal under 800, and my carbs under 40g. I don't want to consume more caffeine because it's a diuretic, and I have enough trouble staying hydrated as it is. Are there any snacks or supplements that will give me a quick boost of energy for the afternoon. I'm kinda dragging "(__(__)" during my last 2 classes at the end of the day. I'm taking my vitamins exactly as I should, and my numbers came back great on my blood work. I'd just like to know what, if anything, y'all use for a quick pick-me-up. TIA! EDIT* Just wanna add that I'm 3 months and 8 days out of my revision to bypass surgery, and I'm consuming 75-85g of protein daily.

I want buddies too T^T I'm currently 4 days post-op. I originally wanted the rxy bypass but my surgeon said my spleen was tooooo big and it would have been too risky, they opted to switch to a sleeve mid operation. I'm still very happy with this choice and hope it leads to health and happiness for me. So far, I think it's been surprisingly difficult to get liquids down. Texturally the nicest thing has been sugar free pudding mixed with some protein powder. Very helpful for when these liquids just seem to want to walk right back up :C At the hospital they gave me 100% apple juice and then when i went home they called to see how I was doing with fluid intake and got upset that I was having apple juice. Just make sure it's 100% okay when you go home after surgery I guess x_X
  21. Anyone having food dreams? I had my bypass on the 15th and I’m not hungry and don’t really care about food. But today I had this funny dream about my husband bringing me nachos and we both just forgot all the limitations. I ate some and then I freaked out because I thought it was going to cause some sort of catastrophe. I woke up laughing about it.
  22. Hello, had my gastric bypass on the 18th! Thankful to find a group of buddies who are on a similar timeline as me. So far so good for me, just not liking the "full feeling" that I get in my chest/sternum. But still on full liquid/puree diet at this point. Weird thing is I am craving toast and not sure why that is. Of course not allowed at this stage, so will have to avoid that and find a way to work through that.
