I am liking it so far. I am still using up some animal based protein powders, and a few items in the freezer (like frozen salmon), but i am liking it so far. The only problem is that it really increases the VOLUME of food eaten, which is a bit hard for me at this point. I don't want to "stretch" my pouch, so I just eat real slowly, chew very well, and take my time. I use soups and sauteed veggies with tofu at work, because I can eat them within the 20-30 minute lunch break, and I eat my big raw salad at home, because it takes more than an hour to eat. I spread out the grains and legumes so they aren't all packed into huge meals that I can't finish. I have had NO problem with weight gain by eating the extra carbs. I feel good, and have lots of energy. My goal is to go 80-90% plant based, and I am pretty much there now. Next week (1 week before my bike race) I will go 100% plant based, as there is pretty impressive evidence that athletic performance improves, even in a short time, with WFPB. Inflammation in the blood vessels and muscles is reduced, allowing for increased blood flow. Guys, even bedroom performance is enhanced with increased blood flow by eliminating all animal based foods for even just 24 hours before an "event." Food for thought.......

So I had my gastric sleeve on October 18th and since been losing weight evenly. I was down to 209 and then my period started on the 5th and I jumped up about 5lbs. I wasn't really worried as I normally gain 5lbs around my period but yesterday was the last day of my period and I'm still up about 5/6 pounds. Any of you have similar stories? Should I be worried or should it go down in a bit? Any advice is appreciated! Also having my 2nd follow-up with my surgeon next Monday.

Partner/ spouse support
BayougirlMrsS replied to Nomorepasta's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nomore.... Have you explained to him how much you value his support, but that you feel this is the path you must take? My now ex husband hated the idea of me getting WLS. Back in 2009 i got banded. He said the same... you're doing it now, you can do it without surgery. But, i knew i had to have this for me and no one else. It was harder with out his support, but i went on to lose 89lbs. Kept it off for years. In 2016 i asked for a divorce after 25+ years. (lots of issues) The main problem was my weightloss. He hated the skinny me, would be negative all the time. Told me some of the most horrible stuff. But though it all Never had any weight gains while i had my band. Back in March 2017 i got the flu/stomach bug and threw up violently... slipped my band. Emergency removal. It was the worst day ever. Between that day and Julyishhh.... i gained back 30lbs. This confirmed that i needed WLS. So Aug 28, 2019 i got sleeved. Your health has many risk and side effects. You have to do this for you and only you. If you haven't, go watch youtube Dr. V.... he's an Asian guy and he is 100% correct on everything he says... go watch the one on relationships. 5'2" Banded Nov 10, 2009 SW 232, weight at removal 143 Sleeved Aug 28, 2019 SW 173.5 Today 144.2 -
revise from Band to sleeve with a low BMI... Cash pay?
kah1213 replied to BayougirlMrsS's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I think yes cash pay. That’s what my situation is as I’m still considered low BMI despite significant weight gain after my band was removed. -
Can we just be for real ???
Bastian replied to november11's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Honestly, no. My weight gain made absolutely no difference to how he was with me and nor is the weight loss. I honestly did it for myself. -
Here's another surgeon opinion: My guy is more concerned about weight loss rather than weight gain after plastics. He said a 15 lb weight gain would make a negligible visual difference, but 5-10 lb loss would/could likely result in skin folding along the scar incision. At the time of my consult, I was 127 lbs and he was not concerned about more weight loss because he said "You don't really have anything left to lose". Well surprise! I've gone down 13+ lbs since I saw him last. We'll see what he has to say next week at the pre-op appt. P.S. A small part of me (a VERY small part) is low-key considering postponing the surgery to give me more time to be at specific weight for a longer period of time. This coupled with the fact that as time goes on, I don't seem to be bothered as much with the state of my skin as I was before. I'm totally walking around naked and don't mind it one bit (Mr. is pleased). ALSO, my plastics priorities are changing. Now I want a butt lift, I think! I guess this is why (some) people say to wait a while after reaching goal to go down the plastics path...

Getting a Revision - but OMG NOT because of weight regain!!!!
GreenTealael replied to summerset's topic in Rants & Raves
Also I would LOVE to see threads where people who need/want revisions and don't have medical complications explain how they were able to get it done. Too often you see GERD + weight gain = revisions but not everyone develops reflux and regains. It can be either/or/none. What about the percentage of patients with no issues at all and the band/sleeve/etc just wasnt very effective on them. Or start at a very high weight with the sleeve then need to go on to the DS/SIPS. I think that could help others see that sometimes is no just about you doing everything right or wrong -
Yesterday, Mon, Nov. 4 Maintenance : 5'2" / 1yr PO Sleeve / 114.4 lbs ...am such a rebel. I put my vinaigrette back on my salads out of cranky defiance of all things that suck. Day 5 smoke-free and counting...and I KNOW that it is not related at all, AND that there are a gazillion reasons for this, BUT my inner crank is annoyingly pointing out that since I quit smoking again, my weight has steadily increased by fractions of lbs daily (a whole 1.5 lbs since, the HORROR). So its all like "See?!?!?! you need to go buy a pack and stop this explosive weight gain ASAP!!". Shut the eFF up, Crank. 10:30am - coffee with Stevia 12:00pm - salad greens + vinaigrette (❤️) + carrots + 1/2 avocado + 1oz salted Herring 4:00pm - salad greens + vinaigrette (❤️) + cucumber + 1oz salted Herring + 1.5 oz turkey jerky + 1 fl oz pumpkin seeds 6:00pm - 2 tbsp crunchy almond butter 7:00pm - salad greens + vinaigrette (❤️) + 1 tbsp corn kernels + 2 tbsp green peas + 1oz Parmesan cheese + 1/2 avocado + 1/2 slice bacon + 1 can smoked oysters w/ seafood sauce + 1 oz grilled octopus 9:00pm - 1 fl oz almonds + 2 squares dark chocolate + 1/4 cup blueberries Totals: 1480 cals - 86g Protein - 58g NET carbs - 95g fat

Insurance approval for another revision
mountaingirlCO posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had the band in 2010, revision to sleeve in 2014 due to major band slip (couldn’t even drink water with empty band), and now having acid reflux and weight gain following a hysterectomy in 2016 and looking for options to revise again. Anyone else have a similar situation and any success with insurance approval? -
3rd times a charm!
mountaingirlCO replied to HollyHeight's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I’m looking Into the same thing now. Band in 2010, sleeve in 2014, and now another revision to ??? Due to acid reflux and weight gain post hysterectomy. Any recommendations regarding the next surgery choice and insurance approval based on your experience? -
Only at the doctor or once a week at home. Day to day weight gains and loss mean nothing. It wasn’t good for my brain to weigh every single day. Fortunately, I’m at the point where my BMI is healthy and I need to lose about 15 more lbs but now I’m only focused on appearance. If I look better after gaining muscle pounds, I’m good with it!

@Lynda486 I was just about to start a thread called 3 week stall and weight gain until I saw this thread.. I am experiencing the same. I have not lost for about a week in fact I've gained 2 lbs. I JUST got the surgery Oct 1. I haven't even logged the two lb weight gain because I want to deny it. It happened around day 21 of the surgey. I've added soft foods in and I think that's why. I'm hitting my protein and fluid goals I just happen to be eating more real food. I never go past 350 calories a day and I get two 30 minutes walks in a day. I don't understand and I weigh several times a day and at the grocery store. I'm reading the responses and they give me some comfort but this is disheartening to have gone through this and now I've gained??? I did better pre-op...OMG..wondering what I did to myself and regretting this surgery. I'm not constipated at all everything is working on that front. Everyone says you lose the most the 1st six months of surgery and now I've stopped.

Brachioplasty (arm lift) - are you happy with the results?
sillykitty replied to rs's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I agree, I think there is less of a risk of negatively affecting plastics results with minor weight gain. IMO losing more weight after plastics would be more detrimental. The strange thing is, I have seemingly lost fat, while the scale hasn't moved (and without working out) -
Lots of people struggle with support. Only my husband knows I'm getting prepared for WLS and even he's been poo-pooing it. I don't need anyone else's opinions trying to derail my only shot at healthy living. Though, like has been said previously, being morbidly obese with no end in sight to the weight gain is definitely committing suicide by food. When it was put to me that way, it really got my attention. This forum is full of wonderful people who have all kinds of experiences. Immerse yourself as much as you need; we're all here to help and support each other. I found this great podcast from one of the threads called www.weightlosssurgerypodcast.com. Take a look at episodes 57 and 60 that talk specifically about the surgery and how to prepare for it physically and emotionally. I'm trying to get hubby to listen to them. Blessings

RNY for Children - Thoughts?
mcfluffington replied to mousecat88's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
On the face of it that seems extreme. I was fat when I was a kid and I think if someone had helped me with my relationship with food I would have slimmed down naturally instead of getting morbidly obese as an adult. But I had lots of emotional problems that contributed to my weight gain.. I am assuming these children are morbidly obese so maybe this surgery in conjunction with a lot of counseling both emotional and dietary is necessary. -
Just keep saying, "I can't have that (food item) now, but I will have it next year." It also helps to think of all the negative outcomes from cheating. Add them all up. List them. Convince yourself of how bad they are for you right now and how they will derail your progress. Then when tempted, tell yourself, "It's just not worth it!" And it isn't. The shame, guilt, physical illness, weight gain/stall are NOT worth it!

One thing I was NOT prepared for when I had my LapBand and lost all my weight was how others reacted to my changes. I was so focused on me and getting healthy that I did not see the others around me seething with toxic thoughts and words. Took me completely by surprise how you know people for years then all of a sudden their true character showed up.
This time around I am prepared but I am totally documenting this journey from the very beginning in my blog! It's been therapeutic to write it all out.

I don't like my Bariatric Team :S
Arabesque replied to canadianpopcycle's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m sorry you are having this experience. Deciding to have WLS is not easy and you should expect your team to be supportive and encouraging. Everyone in this forum will tell you there is no one size fits all (no pun intended) in this process though I can see benefits in a general introduction to the basics of the process in a group class before your individual appointments. Yes, in Australia it is different and each doctor has their own requirements. Mine requires his patients to visit a dietician before surgery and regularly for at least 12 months post surgery. A much younger friend went to a different doctor and only had to see a dietician once. She is struggling post surgery with her food, trying to take the easy route of takeaways and frozen meals & wonders why she is in pain & vomits a lot. My doctor also recommends therapy but considers each patient’s weight gain/loss history & personal history before making the recommendation. He said I didn’t need to but provided a list of therapists I could see if i wanted pre or post surgery. My dietician isn’t very good but better than the one I went to years ago who told me I didn’t eat enough. Consequently I put on weight seeing that one - thanks a lot. This one asks what I eat (I just tell her my basic menu), what I weigh and that’s it. Five minutes & I’m gone. No information about calories, macros,... I rely on my own research ( God bless google & this forum) and a friend who had the surgery 12 months before me. Be patient, keep calm, breathe deeply when attending meetings with your team and follow the steps. Keep up your own research & this forum. Don’t let your frustration with this pre surgery process hinder your surgery. You won’t regret it. Good luck. -

Anyone with PCOS not lose weight after surgery
FluffyChix replied to Ruth9454's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Whey protein isolate is very insulinogenic. Although blood sugar may go down after drinking a wp drink, it's going down because we've dumped a crap ton of insulin on it. Now, when you have PCOS, we already are insulin resistance to begin with and so we dump maybe 10X as much insulin in response to the wp meal which results in? Weight loss slowing, stalls, or gains. My gains were influenced primarily as a result of fluid, not true weight. But I had the frustrating response of starving myself and seeing a subsequent gain or lack of loss. Yes, excess anything causes weight gain. Even fat. Here is a very helpful article that explains it very well. The doctor is a noted nephrologist and fasting specialist. He deals in metabolic medicine. His name is Dr. Jason Fung. https://idmprogram.com/insulin-index/ -
Anyone with PCOS not lose weight after surgery
SabP replied to Ruth9454's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have PCOS, and my thyroid affects it. Or vice-versa. Anyway, I had the surgery due to Gastroperisis, Oct 3rd. And have already lost 15lbs. I did used to have issues with losing weight, no matter how little or healthy I ate. And even gained weight. It was ridiculous. All I can say is, talk to your Gastro doctor about your concerns. And get your T3 and T4 thyroid tested. A COMPLETE thyroid panel. I am on 2 thyroid RX, to keep it under contol. The weight gain stopped after that. I worked in behavioral health for fifteen years and medications for bipolar often cause weight gain and difficulty losing weight. The fact that you lost 17 pounds is a victory. Remember the tale of the tortoise and the hare......it seemed like the tortoise wasn’t going to get to the finish line but he did.

the way I was taught, weight gain is part of over eating
-
That is alot of calories especially if you have medical issues that cause weight gain and not active - I currently am running on 400-500 calories a day and loose weight every week - STOP checking your weight every day you will drive yourself nuts. I weigh in every Sunday Morning and record - My goal is 5.5 pounds per week. I hit it every week by controlling intake and moving about I also use a nutritionist and she has me at 450 a day - so not sure where the 1000 came from. I agree with above it is been said that the long run you should be higher - My attitude is this lets loose it all and figure that out later

Hi, Although I will not get my surgery date until my last appointment with the surgeon and nutritionist on 11/12, they say that my date will be the end of November! I’m in NYC. My center only requires a pre-op liquid diet for two days pre-surgery! They do not require weight loss, they just don’t want weight gain. Anyway, I’m both nervous and excited! Good luck to us all.
