  1. Hi all, I was sleeved on June 26th, 2015. I started my journey in March after my 39 birthday. I finally told myself I am not going into my forties with this weight. Along the road there were nay sayers and supporters. I am now 4 days post op. I started full liquids so I am drinking cream soups high in protein. Feeling pretty good. However I noticed white stuff on my face. I read that some patients will have an increase in acne. Has anyone experienced this?

What if I lose too much weight pre-op???

The weight they have for you is the weight they submit to insurance. At least that is what happened with me. I had to be a certain weight pre op before they would do the surgery because my bmi was really high. It all depends on the requirements of your insurance.

    Walk me through this please

I'm five years out, so life is very different now than it was when I was newly post-op. I can maintain my weight now if I stay within 1500-1700 calories a day - and I exercise probably five days a week. I have tons of energy - and I haven't sipped water in quite awhile - I can drink normally. The sipping all day thing is more common in the early weeks after surgery. I'm not sure how many calories I was taking in the first few weeks after surgery - but not many. Maybe 300 or 400 (??). And yes - you do get very tired. It's the trauma from the surgery plus the limited calories that cause it, I think. I was very tired the first few weeks - and it was probably two months before I felt like my old self again. I started walking as soon as I got home from the hospital. At four weeks out, I was cleared for all exercise except for weights. And at eight weeks out, I was cleared for weights. At that time, besides walking, I did mostly yoga and water aerobics. after the first month or two, I ate 600-800 calories a day for most of that first year. After the year mark, it was more like 1000-1200. I finally stopped losing weight at about 20 months out. And as I said I earlier, I can maintain as long as I stay in the 1500-1700 range. But that varies among people - some people can eat more than that, and some less...
  5. I`m in so much pain with the band I can`t stand it. I think it`s too tight right now so I may go in and get a slight unfill but then I`m afraid I`ll gain weight. I`ve got the slimies and the foamies and the constant pain when I eat but then sometimes I get through `the wall`and I can eat almost anything. It`s very inconsistant and it`s not even working for me right now. After initial success I haven`t lost any weight in the last couple of months despite the restriction. I`ve been reading about the sleeve and it sounds perfect. There are a couple of questions though. I read somewhere that not everyone gets to goal with the sleeve. Is that right?. (Sorry, my question mark is not working right now. Consider that big accented e my question mark.) Also, this thing about the reduced ghrelin. Isn`t ghrelin necessary for other functions in the body?. So are there disadvantages that come with a reduction in ghrelin?. Anybody know?. And price is an issue as well. If someone could tell me the price for band to sleeve revision I would appreciate it. I need to know how much I have to save up. Thanks

Also..you aren't eating great or exercising. Why would you think you should be losing weight?

    Fed up

I'm so sorry you are miserable. And periods suck! If I were you, I would stay away from the scale. Bodies do what they want, on their own schedules, and we can't really control them -- at least not in the short term. I am sure the pound you gained was water and tissue due to your period. There is no way you actually gained a pound of fat eating the way you are. That weight will come off, I promise, but I can't tell you when! So the scale is going to drive you nuts. The pre-op diet, generally speaking, is to help shrink your liver so that your surgery will be safe. It isn't to lose weight, so don't measure how "well" you are doing by the scale. How well you are doing will be assessed by your surgeon when he or she opens you up! And as long as you stay on track, I can't imagine your surgery will be canceled. Doctors understand that sometimes bodies do weird things -- especially in conjunction with hormonal changes and periods. Hang in there
  8. And what did you give you this year? And another challenge for you all- If you could give your Pre-surgery self a message , what would it be? I would tell me Surgery was not half as bad as I expected. I would say You will lose weight even if you doubt it now. And finally Frustr8 you are a strong woman, you can handle this challenge too!
  9. Hi hope you are having a great New Year's Eve. I had RnY on Dec 10th. Had surgery as much or maybe a little more because of my comorbidities. I have had exactly 3 shots of insulin since Dec 9th. I was taking 5 a day, 6 on Wednesdays. I have lost 25 pounds since I began this journey in October. Whooo whooo! I try to walk everyday. I have a brace on both legs. They don't hold me back too much. I need knee replacement surgery on the one knee. My failure to lose weight for that found me on this journey. I had started it before but lost a lot of weight just going by the diet guidelines and chickened out. So thrilled I commeted to the journey this time. I give myself health and happiness for the new year.

  11. I need help and suggestions. Next week will be 1 year post op for me. I have lost 116lbs and I am very thankful for it, but I am really struggling right now. I was playing soccer 5 nights a week and getting all my protein in and felt great. However during one of my games about 1.5 months ago I twisted my ankle so bad I chipped some bone. I had to stop soccer and working out while it healed in a boot. On top of that my parents came to stay with my husband and I and they are not concerned with healthy eating. They bought lots of junk food and while they were here we either ate out or cooked fried foods. It put in motion the hole I am trying so desperately to dig out of right now. I am getting back to working out now, but my sweet tooth is so strong right now. My question is what do many of you do to curb that craving. I can't do the sugar free stuff as the fake sugars give me migraines. I don't usually dump on sugar. I am asking this group because I know I will get honest feedback. If I tell my family I will get the typical oh no you are too smart to gain the weight back, but it is my biggest fear. This group here are the only people to truly understand the demons we are facing. Please help me.
  12. It ok to indulge every once in awhile but that everyday I was having the same problem I started eating chips and granola and my weight loss slowed to a crawl so I decided to go back to following my diet and I also cleansed my pouch by drinking liquid for 2 days and now I get in at least 100 grams of Protein and all my fluids in and increased my exercise and it's working Be careful, sugar is your trigger food you need to avoid it I'm 9 months out and down 101 pounds Good Luck Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk
  13. Hi, I was banded on April 18. I lost weight right away and have lost a total of 21 pounds. That was the first month. I have not lost any since. My usual diet for the day is breakfeast - Quest Protein bar or 2/3 c cottage cheese or a scramble egg with peppers. lunch I usually eat 3-4 ounces of turkery or chicken breast or 2/3 c cottage cheese. dinner is 3-4 ounces of protein ( pork chop, turkey burger, chicken or fish) and 1/2 c .I even weigh and measure my food.
  14. It happens all throughout the journey. Your body has to get used to the different weight changes. You will start losing again. Make sure you keep up with your caloric consumption. That helps a lot. Best wishes to you.
  15. I wanted to add a positive account of my 2 weeks post-op, to give pre-op folks some comfort. After minor episodes of mild incision pain and occasional bouts of nausea as my new stomach got used to digestion again over the last 2 weeks, my body is feeling almost completely normal again. I am in awe of its ability to heal itself. - My incisions are 4 very small cuts (belly-button, sternum, left and ride side of torso) which do not hurt at all anymore. I have some itching occasionally, but I understand that this signals healing. - I can drink Water in normal larger sips now (and even if I forget and take a larger gulp, there is no discomfort) - I have almost completely gone off the taste of Protein shakes (can only manage Core Power banana milkshakes even though, as one user pointed out, these are higher in carbs, so I don't drink more than 1 a day). I get most of my protein through my vegetarian puree diet (Beans, tofu, cottage cheese, (no eggs)) and through adding GENEPRO to my 3-daily cups of tea. - I feel fullness/restriction much better now that I'm on purees (compared to when I was on full liquids - I have to guess if I'd had enough Soup as that flows through rather quickly). A couple of times I've eaten my pureed dinner a bit too quickly and have felt nauseous for 15-20 minutes. That's something to remember with the VSG surgery - your body can feel so normal after a while that you 'forget' about the limitations of your new stomach. - I've lost 14 lbs since surgery and 20 lbs since my highest weight. But mentally, I want to focus on healing rather than weight loss at this stage. I know the weight loss will come - it can't not! I see and feel slight changes in my shape already. - I took 4 weeks off work (because luckily, I could) but could have easily gone back to my office job this week. - I walk 2 miles every evening and while I'm not allowed anything more strenuous for another 4 weeks, I did help pack and unpack furniture and other bits while our home was being decorated these last 2 weeks. I also flew to the Caribbean and back (for a convalescing vacation) without any issues. Take comfort from no-complication stories like mine - as miserable as you might feel a day or two after surgery, your body is designed to snap back quicker than you think.
  16. Brielle - I know exactly how you feel. I am almost 3 weeks postop and I haven't lost any weight in the last two week. It is very frustrating. I am trying hard not to get on the scale everyday but it is really hard because I think that the weight will just melt away. Thankfully, as several people responded, this is something I believe everyone goes through. At least we can take comfort in the fact that we are not alone.

    Just Venting

Here I am still venting. Tomorrow is the day. I'm scheduled to arrive at the hospital at 5:30 AM. I'm so afraid, anxious excited and happy at the same time. I am just flooded with emotions. I've said it 59 times on this blog but I'm doing this mainly for my daughter. She deserves so much more than I can give right now. She has brought so much joy to my husband and I. I want to give her the best life. On to a new subject. I was on my lunch break. Since I can't eat I just drove around. I saw every restaurant you can imagine. I decided to stop at the library. When I left the library there was someone sitting outside eating chips and drinking soda. This set off another set of emotions. I just know that after tomorrow my relationship with food will forever be different. I know this is a good thing but it is still hard. No one around me understands how I feel. I have literally cried thinking about it. I'm trying to think of these things to keep from backing out: After tomorrow, I can be the mother I so badly want to be. I can be the wife my husband deserves. I will no longer have to scan the room to see if I'm the heaviest in the room. I will no longer have to stay home because I'm embarrassed of my weight. I will soon be able to run as I've dreamed of. I will no longer be ashamed of eating in a restaurant. I will no longer have this pain in my knees. I will be able to take my daughter to Disney World and not have to worry about not fitting on things and being unable to walk around. The person on the outside will match the person on the inside. Let's just hope these thoughts make it until tomorrow.

    2 Weeks post op

So I am 2 weeks post op and still having trouble getting in enough water and protein and even some vitamins. I don't want to be that person who is obsessed with the scale but I don't think I'm losing weight is this normal? Am I doing something wrong? Can anyone relate or have any advice? Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. Hey VSG folks, so I'm 14 days post-op and just started the antibiotics for H Pylori! Anyone else have it? I am on my second day only and it's making my stomach hurt!! Ugh and those pills are HUGE! They make me feel as if I'm choking. Any tips on taking the pills or H Pylori on a whole? I feel like I'm going to loose even more weight cause it hurts to eat today! Thanks, L
  22. Please don't take this the wrong way, but I am very surprised you are Type 1 and obese enough to get a band. Most Type 1's tend to be very thin or in a normal weight range, whereas Type 2's tend to be obese. My daughter has Type 1 diabetes and is also on a pump so I am very familar with the disease. I agree with the other poster who said to keep a tube of glucose with you at all times. But in addition to staying in contact with your PCP consult with your endrocinologist as well on a frequent basis. As you lose weight you may need to reduce your basal readings in your pump so that you are not getting as much insulin and also be sure to always set a temp basal when you exercise. Don't forget about the "sun down" syndrome of getting lows in the middle of the night. Weight loss is probably slower with the band for pump patients because insulin in a fat storing hormone and you will probably have to drink fruit juice or regular pop on a frequent basis to combat the low's. Good luck to you. It's a huge challenge to deal with Type 1, let alone have to adjust to life as a bandster too.
  23. So yesterday I had to leave work early because I almost blacked out. I felt weak, faint, a little dizzy, and just plain bad. I was so afraid of going back to the hospital that I left work early and just went home to lay down. This happened after lunch and I thought it was the Soup I ate (maybe it had too much fat or oil or something) anyway I go to work today and after I came back from break I started to have the same symptoms again! I was freaking out thinking this was way serious and ended up calling on of the surgeons on call. The guy I spoke with wasn't my surgeon but I gave him a run down of everything and he said since I didn't have a fever, abdominal pain, or diarrhea it was nothing to come to the ER for. He then suggested that because this has been happening after I ate at work and then resumed standing up(for the rest of my shift) he said either my blood sugar is very low or you may be dehydrated(But he ruled out dehydration because I had gotten in all my fluids). He suggested I drink a couple of ounces of apple juice which I promptly did and I felt a little better but the symptoms returned! I drank a little more and low and behold, my symptoms were gone and I felt good as new! I really hated this happening at work though, because my boss(the assistant manager, anyway) wanted to know my business(Only my manager knew I was out for surgery). She then commented on my weight loss and asked me if I had gastric bypass! Luckily someone else was there in the room and immediately shut them down. (It's none of their business, the point was I don't feel well and I wanted to call my doctor). I was thankful for the other woman thinking it would be completely ridiculous(Word at my job spreads like wildfire, they thrive on rumors). I then gave some BS VAGUE story about my esophagus and how I can only eat certain things so as not to irritate it. After about an hour and a half I was able to resume my work shift! I have never in my life had issues with my blood sugar. I wasn't even "pre-diabetic" pre-op. So just be careful fellow sleevers!

    Zumba

ALL exercise DVD's work- you just have to stick with them and do them 4-7 days a week! I don't like Zumba because I can't keep up with the dance moves...its too fast pace for me but if you love to do dance then I'm sure its for you. You just need to find your favorite one. I do Walk Away the Pounds and that's perfect for me! I haven't even had surgery yet and I've lost all kinds of weight from it...and my body has firmed and toned soo much, I get compliments from EVERYBODY and I still haven't had the band! Next week though!!!
