    June surgery

My surgery day is the same as you. 6/27. 6/7: A group counseling session 6/9: Pre/op day. Meeting with the surgeon again, NUT to review pre/post op diet and bone density scan 6/13: start two week high Protein liquid diet. I believe I am allowed 4 oz of real protein, like chicken, yogurt, eggs and unlimited no starchy veggies with 4 Protein shakes a day. 6/27: THE BIG DAY! I am scheduled to arrive at the hospital at 1:15pm which makes me nervous since you can have nothing to drink, not even Water after Midnight!
  3. I weigh all my food -- except the stuff that comes in single servings like yogurt cups -- on a digital scale, and track everything on myfitnesspal. I know kicking carbs is hard, I struggle with it too! I have found it very useful to go extremely low carb -- under 30 grams of carbs -- for three days to kick the cravings. Those first two days especially are awful but after that it gets easier and the cravings go away. Good luck to you!

Yes I started on 1 Oz protein shakes in hospital. Now on 4 oz...want food. This sucks! Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App Whatever you do, don't try food. I made that mistake thinking I was ready for it about a week out and it ended in disaster. Not only did the one or two bites come back up, but I couldn't even handle a protein shake for a couple days after. This too shall pass, sleeved on 3/1 and at three months I'm alternating between soft and regular diet. I still use protein shakes daily, lots of Greek yogurt, and oatmeal has been a life saver. Being three months out, I'm also down 60lbs and have 50 more to go until mine and my surgeons initial goal. Have faith in their plan, and don't rush yourself. Am i in trouble?

Yes, what you are doing is very bad for your body. You should be getting way more calories...800 at least. You should be eating seafood, fish, chicken, turkey, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, Refried Beans, and soft cooked veggies, even some fruit. Really, you should be able to eat anything at this point except maybe seeds, nuts and skins. The shakes are fine, but they don't need to be your only source of Protein at this point. And it doesn't matter if you aren't hungry, you must eat anyways. Consider it a prescription just like an antibiotic or blood pressure medication or any other drug that you must take in order get well. You should also be taking your Vitamins....a multi, B12, Calcium, Iron and D3. Again, just part of your "prescription for health". Were you told about these? You are starving yourself, causing malnutrition, which is probably why you are sick. BTW, what hack did you goto in Mexico that didn't provide you with postop nutritional information? Thats ridiculous. I went to Mexico, too, and got a huge folder of guidelines. They even have a staff dietician I could call anytime with questions. At the very least, you will need followup with your PCP for bloodwork that should be done at 3,6,12 months and then at least annually forever.

    Am i in trouble?

Are you able to eat soft protein yet like eggs, fish, yogurt.. Etc.? Are you getting physically sick from eating or has your appetite just disappeared? I know from my experience I didn't have an appetite at all for the first six months. Sometimes the sight or smell of food would make me nauseous. However, food is fuel for our bodies and I began to look at food in that manner. I logged all my intake on an app called My fitness pal, that helped keep me accountable to my protein and vitamin levels. Try to get your protein in and up your calories if possible. I think I was eating about 500-800 calories as day a few months out. It is hard in the beginning because you are essentially learning to eat again. Try a variety of foods, you might be surprised at the things you like. I used to hate eggs pre op but now I love them. Used to love tuna- now it gives me heartburn. It's like one big experiment- but you just have to keep trying and eventually it all fall into place. Check out some Bariatric recipes/ideas and branch out. One good website is called "The world according to egg face". She has some great ideas. Hang in there and good luck. Also, if you could give us some information on why you are having trouble maybe we could help more.

    Am i in trouble?

@gsleeve822... At two months out from surgery your diet should be more varied... shakes shouldn't be the main source of Protein... Are you having food sources of protein such as ground turkey, tuna, cheese, yogurt, etc?... 2 months of shakes all day everyday would turn anybody off eating... I was told around 3 weeks after surgery, to be moving away from shakes and get protein from real food... Good luck Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Food

There are various "recipes" for shakes that you can find online, and some are surprisingly yummy. I like Unjury's chocolate Protein shake with a little PB2 powder blended in, or a Torani sugar free syrup. If you haven't checked out the blog "The World According to Eggface" I recommend popping over and looking at her shake recipes. Starting about a week out I began making smoothies using a Greek or Bulgarian yogurt that is high in protein and low in carbs and some frozen fruit. It felt more like a "normal" meal to me. Dr. Matthew Weiner is a bariatric surgeon who has a video on YouTube about the "set point smoothie" that he recommends to his patients. I also like adding GENEPRO or another unflavored Protein Powder to Crystal Light. For me finding things to look forward to and distract myself was beneficial during recovery. I took advantage of the time off to binge watch several shows everyone raves about that I'd never had time to watch, read some great books, and got little treats like fresh flowers and candles that add a simple pleasure to the day. That helped me to take my mind off food. I had cravings for things that first week that I haven't desired at all ever since. Head hunger is totally normal, and for most people it lessens with time.

    What are yall eating

I had RNY on Apr-13-2016. I just started to eat more food (helped with my energy level). Spicy tuna tartar was one of the first things I tried and it was wonderful (surgeon agreed would be perfect). Although I couldn't eat much, mashed potatoes felt great in pouch. Mostly grilled chicken breast, fresh grilled fish and not much meat. I can no longer get an egg to my mouth. Surgeon said give it a rest for a couple weeks (great source of protein). Tons of yogurt and milk too. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Soft food ideas

You may want to up your Protein. 60 grams seems low. What is your protein target? When I was on soft foods, I ate a lot of: Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, refried Beans, tuna, salmon, fish, etc.

    Soft food ideas

Tuna, steamed veggies, cheese, yogurt, refried Beans. I also made a smoothie the other day using low fat vanilla yogurt and strawberries. You can add plain Protein powder to it. And lastly, a veggie stew. I was able to mash up the vegetables in the broth and it was pretty good! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  14. I had surgery with Dr Balette in March of 2015. He's awesome! Right after surgery I mainly had yogurt and Fairlife milk. When I could move on to soft foods I often had eggs and string cheese.
  15. I am currently in the postop purée phase, and my doc said WENDYS chili is ok. So tonight was a busy night and I bought a small chili and it puréed really nice and tasted great. I could only eat a little less than a quarter cup but it was a welcome change from tuna, eggs and yogurt. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  16. Have you made "cheese crackers" yet? Basically small cheese slices (or piles of shredded cheese) under the broiler. http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2016/03/healthy-crunchy-snacks.html I like cucumbers and hummus, cucumbers & salsa, tomatoes & goat cheese, apple slices & cheese, greek yogurt, Protein shake, Protein Bars, beef Jerky, almonds, Mr Cheese O's (http://www.sonomacreamery.com/mr-cheese-os). I know there are more....I just cant think of them....

    After a stall...?

Thank you for the reply! I have always had good success at getting my Water in. My last appt. with my surgeon, we were supposed to have gone over the blood results of my complete nutrition panel (I gave 14 vials of blood, whoa!) but of course, they did not make it to the office in time. So next week I should know if I am lacking something. I'm probably NOT getting in enough protein, but then again I always make that my first bite. I even just finished my three egg yolk and raw milk shake, flavored like eggnog. I get the fresh eggs from a local, beautiful pastured farm here near my house. It's a food club. Or I'll eat three or four large scallops. Lots of seaweed salads. Sometimes raw cheese and of course the Greek yogurts. But, it is possible I am low on protein, thanks for mentioning it. I've had a bad molar cap, and could not chew meat for the three months I've been recovering. When I did, I would pay the price by having inflamed gums. I got that fixed just 2 weeks ago. =) I think you just helped. Will a lack in protein cause this> I am going to the gym again tonight and make sure I work up a sweat in case the yogurt did it to me.

How many ounces are you ACTUALLY eating?

Creative foods for newbie! Howdy y'all!

I love this! I am so sorry for your loss. Congratulations on your news! As to your original question, early out I ate pretty simply: lots of Greek yogurt and cottage cheese, turkey, tuna, etc.

    After a stall...?

I'm experiencing a month long stall! I am going up and down to the tune of 3-7 pounds!! I was sleeved on Feb 1st. 2016. Being honest with myself now, earlier in recovery I ate organic raw yogurt, and some of it was sweetened "naturally" and others like the Maple Pecan, of course had maple syrup. Well, even though I ate these things I still lost weight rapidly. NOW. I am still eating the same things, and I am SOOOOOO stalled and fluctuating and I am exercising! I am going nuts! And as fate would have it, I checked in my monthly visit with my surgeon while I was on my period. I'm a big girl who weighs 305 pounds. When I am IN my period, I will gain up to ten pounds, I do not like telling men this. He decided to schedule me for a two week follow up to see if I had gone back on track, I will follow up with a PA. Three days ago I had lost what I thought was "officially" six pounds in one week. Today I jump pn the scale and I am back up three pounds! Freaking out! What if I go in, in one week and I am right back at 310?!?! OK. So, it seems I have to cut ALL carbs no matter what form. But I truly do not want to give up my limited amount of Raw Milk that I add to my cold brewed coffee each morning. I lost so much weight before when drinking raw milk. I can cut out the flavored yogurts. I really can't describe here just how delicious they were. Look up Mother Culture out of San Antonio Texas. She makes yogurt that is more delicious than I ever thought even existed in reality. BUT I will give it up and stick with plain. Artificial sweeteners give me a headache. You know I'll never take an NSAID again, and that's the only thing that helps my headaches. My Muscle Milk has artificial sweetner in it. Sigh. So reality is hitting me hard now. As before this surgery, in order to lose the weight, I have to give up more carbs than I initially thought. PS I did make a raw shake right before bed last night, that's something I never do. And I am experiencing real hunger sensations. They go away with Water, but they are exactly like they were before surgery. That HANGRY that you see in commercials. I'm a bit lost. This is me, reaching out! =( Is the only way to END a stall, is to cut carbs and amounts back to early post surgical menus?
  22. cheese stick, almonds, sliced apples ( no skin after surgery)... Give Fayeh Greek yogurt a try, very thick and creamy, much less sugar than most other yogurt... Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  23. Cold cuts/thin slices cheese roll ups w/pickle or avocado in the middle. Grilled or cold. Celery w Peanut Butter or cream cheese. Cucumber w goat cheese or laughing cow cheese Beef or turkey jerkey No sugar added Greek yogurt (Damon light and fit, oikos triple zero, etc) Pre cooked frozen shrimp take and let thaw and use a touch of cocktail sauce Protein mug cake (search here for recipes) Berries w plain Greek yogurt Veggies w dip made w plain Greek yogurt mixed w hidden valley ranch powder/mix
  24. @@sleeverv I'm still pre-surgery but I've got a list in my head already. Don't buy too much of anything - you may not be able to tolerate the taste post-op (even if you like it now). Protein shakes (pre-made), Protein powder, broth, sugar free Jello, chicken, veggie or beef stock/broth (even better if you make your own bone broth - more protein), greek yogurt (watch sugar content), crystal light or similar Water flavoring, bottled water (might even want to try a few kinds). Good luck!

    Scheduled for July 18

Mine was liquid only, from high protein whey isolate shakes, unsweetened almond milk, cannon light and fit greek yogurt, and the occasional healthy choice soup, for 2 weeks. It was probably about 600 calories a day. As much as I don't love the idea of doing two weeks of liquids-only, you are right, now I know I can do it. I think I lost about 20 pounds on it, give or take. I am down about 35 pounds since the beginning of 2016, and I know I lost 10 of that by my surgeon meet-n-greet on March 23rd, so the rest came off between then and now; not sure how much of it was careful eating (probably not much, lol- there's a pretty incriminating pic of me on FB, enjoying a 32 oz Flirtini- or 3- on Mother's Day!) and how much was the pre-op. I am a little scared about keeping it all off and losing more before surgery, but I'm working on an eating plan to help with that. Right now I am thinking protein shakes for b'fast and lunch, very low carb/high protein dinner supplemented with plenty of veggies. We'll see.
