  1. I had my sleeve surgery in August 2013. It was the best thing I have have ever done for myself. The knee surgery I thought I would need....I did not. The fatigue and inability to move....gone. My poor blood sugar, blood fats, lymphadema, etc....all better. I can buy clothes off the rack. This has been a dream for me. Alas, I have had a rough stretch. A significant family crisis has taken me away from my “year of me”. I stopped tracking my protein. I let my weekly exercise quota slip away. I no longer commit to my good, post-surgery habits. I have slipped into naughty “slider food” habits (chips, crackers, wine.....too little protein, too many carbs, basically not following any of the recommendations of my program). None of these choices is ok. None of these is recommended....by anyone. I post this only as a cautionary tale. I have regained 30 pounds (1/3 of my total weight loss) since my minimum. I am, again, in the “morbidly obese” category (not even a little bit ok with me). I struggle to climb stairs. My knees are hurting again. I will learn how bad my metabolic numbers are soon (when I see my doc for my annual physical). This was not why I underwent major surgery and worked so hard for several years at my good health and weight loss. i tell all you all this to warn you to stay vigilant. Take your surgery seriously. Keep up with your good, new, healthy habits. Don’t let life’s events derail your hard work. Surgery was a life changer for me and I have not been able to make a lasting success of it. I am still better off than I was pre-surgery but not where I should/could be. My surgeon is frustrated with my weight slide. I am mad at how my life circumstances have derailed this “miracle” in my life. My weight is up. My health is down. Not good. i plan to return to good habits....eventually (once my life settles down). I hope it helps me. Time will tell. I choose to believe that my bad habits will be reversible. Fingers crossed I am correct. Stay strong, sleevers. Don’t follow in my footsteps.

    The mighty scale

Personal philosophy is good to establish on the subject, I suppose. The scale is simply a tool as far as I'm concerned. It shows one single metric.....my weight. As a weight loss surgery patient, I find the scale a damn important tool. Clothes can lie....as we all can dress with larger or smaller cuts of clothing or even change colors and the look/fit is different. The scale, though, shows the cold hard fact of whether or not I've lost or gained. It's gonna be a huge tool when I reach the fighting weight I want to live with, too. It takes only a few seconds to hop on it and get a reading each day. Trends can be countermeasured in a swift and easy way. I'll keep fresh batteries in my scale and look forward to the weight readings at various doctor's appointments. It's a number that I'm proud of and will remain proud of. That was sort of the point of bringing out the big guns and attacking my weight with the aid of wls. It is a priority in my life and one that drives many other aspects. Keeping it under wraps will better ensure that all else goes smoothly. I need my scale and the data it can provide. So do my doctors. Being defined by my weight......nope. I get what you are saying there. I was a jovial fat guy. I still am. Just not quite as fat and hell of a lot more healthy which makes me happier. A smile now isn't forced....it's genuine and full of relief.

    The mighty scale

Good for you! I feel like doing that this morning. I weigh every day ( yes I know) and I've just been on the scales this morning and after a week of family staying and getting off track well there is a gain. Sure it will be gone by the middle of next week but it just sets my mood for the day which is not happy. Think ill join you in disposing of the flipping things! Good luck to us both

    The mighty scale

Is anyone else tired of their weight defining who you are? I exceeded the capacity of my 300 pound scale about 3 years ago. According to my doctors scale I was 315 last April. If all goes well then tomorrow I will have utter glee adding lead to my scale as large chunks exit the back of my scale. It should be quite therapeutic! I've also decided that nobody else needs to know my weight either including my doctor. I have a commercial driver's license that I will have to step on a scale for ever two years as a requirement for my medical card but everyone else can pound sand. All I care about is being happy with myself and that damn scale sure never did.

    The mighty scale

Good for you! Have fun destroying your scale. What worked for me was to only weigh at doctors appointments, especially early out post-op. Now, I weigh no more than once a week. There was a long period of time before surgery when I just didn't want to know what I weighed, and didn't. One of the critical success factors for me during the WLS process is to be rigorously honest with myself and my medical team. That includes my weight. Now, I look forward to stepping on the scale at the doctors office. I don't share the number on the scale with anyone else unless there is a need to know. I put it on my ticker on BariatricPal and have shared the number with a couple of people who were sincerely considering WLS and were obviously suffering with their obesity. I think one of the first steps for me towards WLS was to buy a scale that was rated to handle my weight. Even it had a difficult time recording my weight. Now, when I step on it is simply registers a number.

    Me, One Year After

I don't think there is a right age or a wrong age. It's all relative. I had mine at 58, I also believe it saved my life. Pro's to having it younger however is your skin has a lot more elasticity and you have a much better option of it going back where it's supposed to rather than just emptying out and hanging there like empty balloons. Believe me there are a lot more places than you would think that will simply just hang there. You also will more than likely not have a wrinkled up face after losing weight like an older person will. I have wrinkles on my wrinkles. You will have so much more energy as a younger person and it will be really good when you start developing those healthy habits like exercise, hiking, riding or whatever you choose to do. It has been much harder for me to do those things as I get older and older making it a real effort to lose additional weight (even with the sleeve)..Good luck and keep up the great work
  7. @@jhclikesshopping@gmail.com thanks for the advice, I was stuck! I think maybe I've been eating the wrong things and that's why I'm at a weight loss stall, but I know where to go from here!

    Pre Op Diet??

Hi again, I found this & thought some of us might be interested? (here's where I saw it:http://www.bospa.org/Information.aspx?Page=19) Pre-op liver reduction plan Just because you are awaiting a surgical treatment for your morbid obesity, this is not an excuse to sit back and gorge out on as much food as you can! Any weight you can lose through dieting before your surgery is an advantage - it will make the surgery easier and will reduce the risks associated with it. Some surgeons mandate a very restricted diet - one that is low in fat, sugar and carbohydrates - for one week prior to surgery and even if your surgeon doesn't ask you to follow this diet, doing so will increase your chances of your operation being completed laparoscopically because it will shrink your liver down in size. By following a strict diet, your body reduces its glycogen stores (glycogen is a form of sugar stored in the liver and muscles for energy). With each ounce of glycogen, the body stores 3–4 ounces of Water, so when you follow a very strict diet, especially one that is low in starch and sugar, your body loses its glycogen stores and some water. The liver shrinks as it has less glycogen and water in it. This diet is only recommended for one week before surgery and is not to be followed post–operatively. It is quite possible you lose a lot of weight that week, but it will be mainly be water loss. Please ensure you continue to drink throughout the day. Here are some menu suggestions: Breakfast Small bowl of Cereal, or 1 slice of toast with a scraping of low fat spread lunch 1 slice bread or 2 crispbreads Small portion lean meat or fish, or Small portion cheese, or 2 eggs (not fried) Green salad (no dressing) or tomatoes dinner Small portion lean meat or fish, or Small portion low fat cheese, or 2 eggs, or Tofu or Quorn based dish 1 small potato or 2 tablespoonfuls Pasta or rice Vegetables (as many as you like except for root vegetables) Daily 1/3 pint milk for use in drinks and on cereal 2 portions of fruit (e.g. apple, orange, banana, pear) Free water, tea, coffee, low calorie squash or fizzy drinks 1 low fat, low sugar yogurt or fromage frais

Great! Congratulations!! Follow the plan for you and you'll do fine. My one word of advice - do your best not to let old (bad) eating habits creep back into your lifestyle down the road. Dr. Kuwada was my surgeon. I think the whole group at Carolinas Weight and Wellness are wonderful.
  10. i have not had the surgery, but will have my first consultation this month. i have diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fibromalagia, depression, and am 100 pounds over weight, plus i am having a very hard time with the smoking. I have been a smoker for 40 years. I am scared. my sister and my Aunt are telling me stories of how this person and that person died after surgery. Infections and so on. these people had theirs over 10 years ago, surely this has been perfected. what if you do not have a good support team? does it make it harder? how much help do you think i will need? i want to try the chantix i have heard this is a mind altering drug. i take so many drugs now how will this effect my other meds? i am truely frightened. i have 4 years before i have to purchase private medical insurance. with the obama care being so weird i probably couldn't afford the price with all my current aflicktions. Smokers immediately have to pay 50% more than anyone else; let alone having all the other medical issues.
  11. Hey there! I'm new to this forum. I have been a member at another board, but their anti-carb philosophy made me angry and eventually the black sheep. Anyway, I had the sleeve done in February and since then I've lost nearly 75 lbs. I lost 100 pounds before surgery which I'm glad I was able to do. I'm about 45 pounds away from my goal now. I'm 31 years old, live in Minnesota with my cats and dog. I'm an avid reader and writer which is good since I work in a library. My job requires that I move a lot during the day, so not only has that helped with my loss, my loss has made my job easier. Since surgery, I've been able to take up running again, I've been on an airplane for the first time in 18 years and I was able to ride a bike without the tires flattening because of my weight. I have had no regrets and I'm so grateful to have my life back.

    Eating too much?

Your question really means nothing without knowing the calorie count. Share that info with your NUT for a comprehensive answer. My guess if you stay between 1000 and 1200 cals per day you will lose weight fast.
  13. Please remember portion control and working out or some type of exercise will help with the weight gaining Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  14. I watch this show weekly, on TLC, but I am baffled that a great number of these folks are able to maintain their weight despite having surgery. I realize bad eating habits and enabling by family members, since many of these patients aren't mobile and are dependent on others for food, are big issues. And the immobility means they are likely getting no exercise, which doesn't help. There was one girl, earlier in the season who lost only 5 lbs. during her yr. long weight loss journey, and these were the 5 lbs. she lost during the pre-op inhospital diet. So sad. I really feel for these people. Your thoughts?

Does Anyone Watch "My 600 lb. Life"?

I have watched all three seasons. From what I can tell only two out of 30 had little weight loss. Both became immediately resistant to following the diet. I looked up Penny (the one who lost only five lbs) had a "weight fetish" she had been on several shows claiming she was trying to lose weight: Dr. Phil, a british show. She got her self labeled as the heaviest woman in the world (in Guniness) and she claimed that she had lost weight by having sex 4 or times a day. I came away thinking that she didn't want to lose weight she just wanted to be on TV. I like the show because generally the people are quite successful -- but not without a struggle. What I don't like about it is it is overly scripted. The people always seems as if they are reading to me and also I would like to seem them followed for more than a year. because many don't have the surgery until the 3rd or 4th month which means that we only see a few months of surgical weight loss.

    weight training

Is anyone just doing weight training and losing weight? If so what are you doing sets, reps and how many days a week? I have a heel spur and cant do cardio like I want to. Thanks

    weight training

I have been hitting the gym 6-7 days a week. My personal trainer (the 1 free session that comes with my membership) has me doing a minimum of 45 min cardio every day. Abs every day I go and then alternate between arms and legs every other day. She told me to do 2 sets of 15 on all the machines. i asked her about how to determine the proper weight for each machine, and she said that by the 8th rep it should start to burn a little bit so that by the 15th you are pushing through to finish the set. No burn by 8 = too light. Burn before 8 = too heavy. So far, yes I am losing weight. Good luck to you!!!

  19. I was just wondering if anyone else had the same requirement. My surgeon will not do surgery unless you have had a psych evaluation from the doctor he refers you to. Supposedly this Dr. is extremely familiar with WLS. I have been seeing a psychiatrist for a couple of years now and I'm on anti-depressants. My psychiatrist is totally supportive of me having the lap-band, and offered to write a letter for me when we first discussed the surgery. I'm not thrilled with the fact that I have to go see a stranger who happens to know a lot about WLS, but not me! I would think my psychitrist who I have been seeing for over 2 years would know better than anyone if I am "mentally" capable of handling the surgery and that I am totally committed to weight loss! I'm back!!!

Congratulations! Fairy... I never posted much on here but I followed your last pregnancy. My band baby was born in October. I have just got back down to the weight I was before I got pregnant. (not the low weight of my pregnancy since I lost 20 pounds at the beginning of my pregnancy.) It has been a bit harder since I had the baby... but I am getting back on track. I hate that I lost 15 months... but it is all good. Good luck with this pregnancy. I hope all is well.

    New...

Hey, My name is Katie and I am brand new to all of this. My doctor and I have been discussing lap banding this past summer and I have decided to go ahead with it. I am hoping to schedule my surgery in the middle of December. Honestly, I am terrified. It's a lot to deal with. But I have a genetic spinal disease that makes exercise hard and I have been struggling with my weight for most of my life. So this seems like the best chance I have to deal with my health issues and have the normal life I have always dreamed of. So yeah... that's me. I am glad I found you guys. Katie*
  22. Hi Everyone! I have been checking this forum out for the past few days and just registered today. There is so much knowledge and support available here. It should be a requirement for patients to register for this site! I am currently saving for my lap band surgery since my insurance doesn't cover it. My main reasons for having surgery are for my future health. Diabetes and heart disease run rampant in my family and it's just a matter of time before I am diagnosed. Also, my joints have been really bothering me lately. I went through the posts and have seen numerous questions regarding excess skin, cosmetic surgery etc..... What I ask may seem to repeat other posts however I want to see if there are others my height, size shape etc.. that can tell me their experiences. I am 33 years old, have never had children and am engaged to be married. I have been overweight my entire life however I have always remained active. In High School I was a 3 sport champion athlete yet still managed to graduate weighing 235lbs. I am tall (5'10) and my body has always been pretty well proportioned. My great grandmother was 6'6 350lbs (I'm not kidding!!) :smile2: I have always had a lower "pooch" belly but it does not hang down real low like a lot of others that I have seen. I've always been told that I have a shapely figure. (just a bigger one) My weight is currently at 305lbs. I wear a size 42D bra and wear a size 24 at Lane Bryant. I have steadily put on weight since High School and have not lost or gained anything significant other than 25lbs on weight watchers. Unfortunately, my lower stomach now has an upstairs neighbor. I've had stretch marks since I was young however all of the stretch marks that I have are very faint and thin. I can still see them if I really look but they are nothing like the stretch marks that I have seen on some people that have had children. I know that everyone is different but I am wondering how many other people like me faired with their skin bouncing back after weight loss.. Are my chances good that my skin won't be saggy since I will lose weight slower than gastric bypass? I appreciate all responses........ Thanks for listening.... Emily ..........waiting for the day where I can wear ultra low rise jeans and LOOK GOOD!!!!!!
  23. Hi everyone [emoji5], I'm about to change my life for the better. After years of weight-loss struggles due to hysterectomy and hormones I finally got up the nerve to walk into a weight-loss clinic and forever change my life. Scary as it seemed the team at the center were and are beyond helpful and kind. Not only that but my Dr. Had bypass surgery himself so he knows all the struggles we will face. My greatest shock is I've suffered for 24 years with GERD and the Dr said you have a hienal hernia let's knock that out and get you a gastric sleeve and put this behind you. So here I am headed for scope and ultrasound next week then to the next step. Today I weight 236 at 5'4 yet I'm beautiful so I can not wait to find that hot mama [emoji7]just dying to be set free. Typical day 7 weeks post

I pretty much eat whatever I want, just in much smaller quantities now. Of course I want chocolate and chips but those are not on the healthy food list. Looking back on when I was first banded, I lost 12 lbs the first 2 weeks and then nothing for the next 3.5 months. After my 3rd fill I finally had enough restriction to feel less hungry. Up to this point(4 months out), I ate as healthy as I could so I didn't gain more weight. You're doing fantastic so far, just keep eating healthy and go for a fill as soon as you can. I too felt like I could eat anything and had no restriction till that 3rd fill. It will come. tmf
  25. Just curious as to what your daily diet looks like. I'm 7 weeks post and I pretty much have no restrictions. Also I haven't had a fill yet so I lost 17lbs so far but nothing these past few weeks. I'm hoping after my fill the weight starts to come off again. I still have 50 more to go. Thanks
