Lap Band Process
depressed_bandster replied to tflitter's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm having surgery tomorrow and I went to my seminar/consultation the beginning of October! I have been fortunate. I did not have any insurance delays....took only 3-4 days, because I was a pest. I started with one doctor group (800-get-thin), had one sleep study & with them, it was going to be 6 weeks getting all the results back BEFORE they would even submit to the insurance company. I needed to have my surgery by the end of the year so I went searching for another group, which I found from this & they have been AWESOME! Two and a half weeks after having my endoscopy through them, I am having surgery! I am so pleased with the doctors and the staff. I have read some nightmares on here with people being denied, appealing, having to wait months and months for approval. I guess it depends on your insurance. I have Anthem BCBS PPO, my BMI is barely 40 and I have moderate sleep apnea. Because of my BMI being varely 40, I didn't have to do the pre-op liquid diet, thank God! My liquid diet will start after surgery. If you don't have any known co-morbidities (heart issues, diabetes, etc) I think all docs do a sleep study to see if you have sleep apnea (most overweight people do). If your BMI is 35-39, you have to have a co-morbidity, if your BMI is 40+ you don't have to have a comorbidity. There are BMI calculators online to help you find your BMI so you can see if you are a candidate. In addition to the sleep study my doc (& I think all do) required an endoscopy; this was done the same week as my sleep study. My psyche eval was done over the phone & my nutrition consultation was done the day of my endoscopy. Some insurances require 3-6 months of nutrition classes; mine did not. You insurance company should be able to give you their requirements. Good luck! Hope your journey is as easy as mine has been thus far! Tomorrow will begin the REAL journey! -
BCBS of NC here... it took 4 weeks to get approval (found out on the 7th) met with surgeon on the 9th, surgery is the 27th just so i had time to do my 2 week diet. It was really quick once i got my approval!

won't be able to workout for awhile. I'm scared i'll stop losing weight
kmvalade posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm having surgery on my left arm on the 17th of august, and my right knee is in a brace and having PT for it and my neck which is so not good . I also am wearing a catheter due to bladder retention until september. needless to say i'm not able to do much exercise except for what I have to do for PT on my arm, knee and neck. I'm not seeing much weight loss and think I'm in a stall. i'm so afraid i'm going to stop losing weight or even worse, regain weight. I had my surgery April 13th, 2015 and have lost 50lbs so far (not complaining). Being 57 doesn't help either. I'm making sure I get at least 60-70gms of Protein a day. I'm a picky eater and so I'm concerned that is hurting me. I've had to set reminders on my phone for when i need to eat or snack (i have a brain injury and my long and short term memory is horrible.) I basically have 1 Protein Drink in a.m. with my meds (30gms protein) and then I eat a lot of light yogurt (80 cal, 7gms protein) x 6. sometimes boars head deli turkey plain, baked potato w/chilli, blueberries with almond milk, spaghetti, chicken, salmon, but on days that i don't want to cook it's mainly the Protein drinks and yogurts and maybe something i made ahead of time and froze. All in all it stays under 1000 cal. since i'm not going to be as mobile maybe I should cut back calories? how many calories do you think a couch potato burns in a day? lol cuz that's what i'm going to be for atleast 2 weeks. Has anyone had to put their exercise on hold? and what was the outcome. I think i'm going to be unable to really exercise for a couple of months. They are talking about doing neck surgery next after i've recovered a bit from my shoulder repair. I've also found the strangest thing. sometimes (usually in the afternoon) i find I can eat more than what I typically eat. a.m. is 11oz of protein drink, snack is 1 yogurt, lunch is usually 2 yogurts, my snack is a protein cookie (yuck) or yogurt and then dinner can be more traditional. I'm open to any and all feedback! Kat -
How much weight did you lose on your liquid diet?
KristenLe replied to Color83's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
@@Color83 I think it also depends on what you were doing in terms of dieting prior to the pre-op (how much Water weight did you have to lose, etc.). I start mine 10/4/16 - I have no expectations but would be thrilled for 10 lbs (in 2 weeks). -
I was using lemons and limes in my Water since the first week post op. I now use them several times a week in my food like shrimp or fish and even Soups. I have never had a single problem with them.

Help...I cannot stop emotional eating today.
ziggypbang replied to Carlotta1's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
DON'T PANIC! You are frustrated and beating yourself up over ONE DAY!! This journey doesn't happen in a day, or even a week. Look how far you've come. You're not the same person you were pre-surgery. Don't put yourself back in that box. I have decided to take a one or two meal "break" once a week, no more, and not worry about what I eat during that time. Very few people can eat perfectly 100% of the time. I'm not going to eat to the point of discomfort - this sleeve keeps me on course, but I can plan special treats. Two weeks ago Sunday I ate French fries - just a few, with this amazing Belgian sauce. This past Monday I had a Krispy Kreme. And part of a cheeseburger, later for dinner. Yesterday and today I ate beautifully both days, and hit the gym yesterday. It believe this can be okay. Serious bodybuilders actually plan to eat extra calories some days in order to keep their fat-burning and muscle-building in high gear, and not slow down their metabolism. They may be on to something. I don't -
Questions? Inquiring mind needs to know
Alexandra replied to sherita's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Sherri, if you're just now moving on to solid foods my thinking is that it's too soon for a fill. Your esophagus is still getting used to the added pressure and if you haven't fully transitioned to solids getting a fill will just make it more difficult. Most doctors won't even consider giving a fill until 6 weeks post-op and until the patient is eating solid foods with ease. If you're feeling any difficulty swallowing it seems to me that a fill would be premature. -
Hey all, I'm new here and just got sleeved this week. I'm doing fine so far, but am having the usual problems with head hunger and trying to break out of the munchies mode. My big problem now is that I have zero support at home. My wife had RNY several years ago, but has gained back most of the weight. She has no problem going in the kitchen and whipping up a big meal for her and the kids and sitting down in front of me and chowing down. This morning she made waffles with fruit and bacon of all things. Easily one of my favorite breakfasts and sat down as I was choking back my pills with a bottle of water and started eating. I simply said, "that really looks good" This wasn't the first time since I've been home from the hospitial, that she's done this. She asks me if I wanted her to move into the dining room and eat, which I replied yes. She gets all po'd about it. I mean I don't mind her making meals for her and the kids, but to sit down in front of me and chow down is just plain cruel. I supported her 100% when she when through her surgery. I didn't eat around her, I cooked what ever she wanted or needed. She's told me she won't be the food police and that its up to me to decide what I want to eat. I get that, but a little help would be nice. She controls the kitchen, not me. If I go and cook something she gets pissed because I am in her kitchen. I don't know what to do. I am so committed to making this sleeve thing work. I have to change my habits, but I am only human, and can't overnight become something different. It just sucks that she would act like this, when I need her the most. I am really afraid this is going to drive an already decent wedge in our marraige even further. I just don't know what to do.... Sorry for the rant. I have no one that I can talk to about this. I just wanted to get it off my chest.

Hi Wrote you a long post and it didnt save..suppose it wasnt meant to be..lol So,short post. STEP AWAY FROM THE TABLE WHEN THEY EAT!You dont have to be there for now and do make your own food and drink,it is your responsibilty!DONT TORTURE yourself! It is not necessary.Dont make excuses for this at all,you are just one week post op and not even eating yet! And she must be feeling aweful at some level for regaining her weight.Being a little spiteful at this point is called the human condition...lol.Forgive her!Do not expect or rely on that kind of support from her and your life will be much easier.Just do your own thing as far as food is concerned,at least for now.Have a little bit of a thick skin as far as the kitchen thing is concerned and pretend not to notice her being PO'd.But be nice ok?Be a great husband and father in all other aspects and excuse yourself from their food life. And dont cook anything you cannot eat, only see to yourself in the shake, broth and drinks for now. Good luck and when you can eat,if you have to make your own food,do it!

How much weight did you lose on your liquid diet?
Sai replied to Color83's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I didn't lose much, if I don't have some kind of fruits/vegetables my weight stalls (everyone is different) or my body refuses to let go any of my Water. I suffer from edema. I didn't start multi-Vitamins until post-op. I'm post-op day 28 and for the first 10 days (liquid phase), again my body didn't want to release water at first. I didn't lose anything, I gained from the IV fluids. Now last time I checked I'm 26 lbs down. And like @@Montana Gal said, it's main purpose is to shrink your liver for a safer surgery. -
Whatever works for you. I slept flat on my back and either side starting the first night home. I never needed "propping". I was even getting in and out of my low waterbed with no problems. It was about 2 weeks before I could comfortably sleep on my stomach because I just felt so bloated.

VSG veterens! Best advice for success, please!
Babbs replied to 24601's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Follow the WLS "rules" 90% of the time: Protein first. Protein keeps you full and satiated longer. It also takes more calories to digest. Protein also keeps you from losing the all important muscle mass that will be lost during weight loss. Drink your fluids. Find ways to make sure you're getting at least 64oz of fluids (preferably water) in every day. It's very hard sometimes, but so important for health and weight loss. Move more. You don't have to be a gym rat. And weight loss really is 90% diet. But if you truly want to look and feel healthier, find ways to move your body so you're boosting your metabolism and getting that heart pumping a little most days. Find something you like to do and stick with it! Watch sugar and other "white stuff"....bread, rice, Pasta, potatoes. I didn't touch the stuff until I had lost 75% of my excess weight. Even now in maintenence, I rarely eat them because FOR ME, it causes cravings for more. It's just too much of a slippery slope for me. DON'T GET DISCOURAGED. I was a slower loser and stalled a lot. It took me a year to lose 85 pounds. I stopped trying to compare my weight loss to others and realized this was my journey and nobody elses. I also learned that stalls were a normal part of the process, and if needed, I would adjust things accordingly or just kept doing what I was doing and rode them out. It's a constant process learning to listen to what our bodies need at any given time. And what my body needs may be different from what your body needs. And it's never as simple as 'calories in, calories out'. Hope that helps! Good luck! -
When will the fatigue subside?
ChristineR replied to ginger429's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
4-6 weeks mine really picked up -
Is it physical hunger, as in stomach growling? If yes, maybe it's acid. Do you have an acid reducer? If no, Pepcid makes a chewable that you can use. I had this problem my first 6 weeks after surgery -- especially at night. Turns out it was acid. Now when I think I'm hungry, it's actually that I am thirsty. A drink sometimes helps. I am 12 weeks out, and I don't get those hunger pangs anymore. I get tired or weak and then I think, "oh, I must need to eat." That's a small miracle for me. The other thing is head hunger. I have that when I am working (not thrilled with my job right now). For that, you might want to consider a therapist. I am about to start seeing someone if the head hunger doesn't stop bugging me.

I've been scheduled for September 11, 2013 since the middle of July. I needed to get past a planned vacation and a few other schedule barriers and then I would be banded. Somehow, until those things passed it seemed so far away. Now, vacation is over and the other scheduled items are finishing up this week. WOW..this just got real! One week from tomorrow! I have my pre-op appointment tomorrow and I have a feeling my head will be spinning with the reality of it all. I'm not second-guessing or even scared. I'm ready and excited. I just can't believe it's so close!!!!

I have crazy dreams all the time. So far, none about the surgery. But I do dream about food. I am hoping that as I lose weight I will dream about oreos and brownies and so forth less. I think I am stuck dreaming about pizza-- I take pizza orders for a job. Right now I can get a craving and it can be weeks that have passed and the craving will not go away until I eat whatever it is that I am craving. And the dreams usually make me crave something!

did anyone else (or is anyone else) having crazy weird pre-op dreams?! last night i dreamt i was in the hospital (which looked an awful lot like a 7-11/cheap motel combo) laying in a huge bathtub filled with bubbles while my nurse was busy making a bunch of big gulps. i drank part of one and she yelled at me that my surgery was going to be postponed if i continued to drink soda. so i sat in the bubble bath and nervously waited for the other nurse to come draw my blood. i panicked that i forgot my laptop and was scared that i couldn't find my friend to help me go through the surgery. the water got cold and then i woke up. i also had a dream that i was already banded and was on a roller coaster. we went over a HUGE hill (hill?) and then went down a dip super fast and i threw up my band! never mind that it's on the OUTSIDE on my tummy. i woke up freaked out a bit. LOL. i have WEEKS to go and i'm already having crazy dreams every night. can't wait to see what my mind produces as the date gets closer!!! :heh:

Ok, I've got a dilemma and maybe you all can help. Ok, so I visited my original band surgeon in February (surgeon #1) and inquired about the sleeve. He said "if you want it done, you will need to find another doctor". He is not in agreement with the sleeve and said that I would gain the weight back in one year. I really took that to heart and I had to make a choice. I love my original surgeon and I really wanted him to do the surgery, but per his response, in March I began to find a new surgeon Surgeon #2 is all for the sleeve and explain how he opposes the band because of it's "failure to produce long term weight loss" and said that he would take out the band and perform the sleeve all at once, but because of the revision I may have complications (which he explained was a standard disclaimer that he must warn to his patients; however, he's never had a patient return with complications). I thought wow, he must be some kind of amazing. So I began the process. I went to surgeon #1 last month (March) to inquire about the sleeve again and he was not for it still. I really love this dude Meanwhile, under surgeon #2, I had my psych eval and I will begin my two nutrition classes on Saturday, April 19th and paperwork will be submitted for surgeon #2 next week. With many prayers for an approval, I hope to have surgery next month. Thought, ok a third time is a charm, I went to surgeon #1 today and now he's on board with the sleeve surgery! What?? But here is the catch 22, he would remove the band next month and I must follow a three month diet w/o band. He will perform the surgery in July IF I can follow the dietitians plan. This complicates my decision because I would much rather have it done sooner than later and I do not trust myself without the band. And if I cannot follow the dietitian plan, is that to say he would not perform the sleeve? UGH What would you do??

So confused!!!! I cant seem to get the fill right
cheryl2586 replied to Smiles4Di's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have swelling anywhere up to 3 to 3 and a half weeks after a fill. Everyone is different. You may have a sensitive stomach but call your doctor. -
Hi, I think you should contact your Nut about this. I have days like that, but I'm only 8 weeks out. Good luck with it though.

Family Medical Leave Act question
HopeandAgony replied to Careysgirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You can have multiple FMLA certifications at one time (that expire after 1 year). Each certification should cover one specific illness. Your 12 weeks are per calendar year, and accumulate for all the certifications. For example if you missed 2 weeks due to stress, and you recertify for this surgery, you have 10 more weeks of coverage under FMLA. If a full 12 months advances from the time off due to stress, the days will start to fall off and your FMLA accumulation will replenish (for any current FMLA cases you have open & active). Bottom line is you need a new FMLA certification for this surgery as it wont be covered under your one you got for stress. Hope that helps. Sent from my SM-N910P using BariatricPal -
Three cheers! Keep up the good work!

Just Waiting....still
Justine13 posted a blog entry in You will not find "Justine" listed as a definition of patience in the dictonary
Lord help the insurance company if I get a denial. I have absolutely no patience for this waiting game so if they wait more...... well, really, what am I reallllllly going to do? Nothing. Because I can't. So, I need to think positive right? Right. Hopefully next week goes quickly. I must admit, this week did. I look forward to my last visit on the 13th. Insurance company says it can take up to 2 weeks to review but usually only take one. I say do it in one day. Nothing wrong with a little encouragement. On that note- my daughter sprained her ankle pretty bad. A momma never likes to see her children in pain, no matter how old. SO that will occupy my time too. I keep wondering, once this is approved, my mind will actually be focused on the surgery itself. And GOD help those medical providers when I arrive........ VERSED is my friend. Except it takes about 4-5 times before it affects me as I fight it so much. Whatever, just give me the drugs. YIKES -
Final tests Echocardiogram and Stress Test

How much is water weight loss?
2muchfun replied to Christina.Rose's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Nope! It depends on how much you weigh, height, body type and what type of fat you're carrying. Inner body cavity fat is denser than fat carried around our waists, arms and legs. But you can probably count on losing 10-15 lbs of excess fluids the first 2 weeks.
