    Please tell me I haven't failed.

    Back last March, I got ESG (endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty). I had 6 weeks of a liquids only diet. I painstakingly tracked calories after that according to what doctors said to do -- a 1200 calorie/day diet. Yeah, I'm a short woman, but it sucks. But I soldiered on! I put myself on my home scale week after week, watching the number bounce around but generally trend down. I was so happy. I started at 251 post-colonoscopy-cleanse (since they have to remove all of everything in your gut before doing the procedure), and finally, after a year, I got to 215. I was so glad! And then I stepped on an actually accurate scale at work today, apparently. 238. Are you f**king joking? I said it had to be my clothes and stuff, so I went into the bathroom (single occupancy, thankfully), and stripped. Hopped on. 235. Dammit. Well, maybe it's not accurate. We have some weights around the office, I said. Let's put one on, I said. It claims to be 45 lbs. Scale says...45.2 lbs. Augh. So my bathroom scale is either 15 pounds off, the very concept of which is destroying me, or I've gained a whole ton of water weight for no reason. But I've taken tape measurements -- my waist is down 4 inches and my hips are down 5. I'm eating less in general. I really do think I'm making my calorie counts. My arms and stomach look more defined. That's got to be significant, right? ...Right? If all this adds up, I have not lost 14% of my body weight. I have lost 6%. And that means I am a severe outlier and a failure at the procedure. This was the last ditch effort for me after more than a decade of trying everything I could figure. Most weight loss meds haven't worked for me. Saxenda worked for a while and then stopped. Was the doctor's office scale wrong? It agreed with my bathroom scale at the time. Has my bathroom scale broken and I'm just fucked? Did I just gain a whole shitload of water weight? I don't have my period due to an IUD, so I can't imagine it's that. Please give me something that isn't "you failed." Please. Please.
  2. I am in the 3rd week puree phase and from the binder I was provided I am supposed to be in this phase for two weeks, then move on to the soft food phase. Is this how everyone else's phases were ? Every time I drink water or protein shake my stomach makes noises and it's like my stomach flips, so I can only drink small amounts then my chest hurts like I drank too much or something. I am very behind on liquids. I am only drinking 1 bottle of water and 1 bottle of protein shake sometimes that's even hard. I sometimes squeeze in a broth or Jello. Yesterday a cottage cheese but it made me feel nauseous. Does anyone else experience these stomach flips or noises ?? I am very hungry and feel like I am never going to be able to eat again 😫

    When I get like that it’s because I’m not getting enough protein, so I drink my shake! Make sure you reread your meal plan and follow it to a tee. It helps! 1 week post op the mere thought of having to eat made me a little nauseous. First priority is protein. Make sure to ask your nutritionist contact if you’re not sure!!
  4. Hi guys! I'm all sorts of confused... I just reached 2 weeks post-op. My surgeon cleared me to go back to the gym. Prior to the surgery, I was working out daily 7 days a week lifting weights and throwing in some random cardio for a month and a half straight. In my past, I've consistently gone to the gym for Zumba classes, but obviously through-out the years I would commit and other times I wouldn't. This has been on and off for like the past 10 years. But I was able to go today and I did the same exact weight routine prior to my surgery and I felt absolutely fine! No pain. No issues. HERE'S WHERE I'M CONFUSED! I came across this surgeon who does NOT encourage you work out. He goes through all the "myths" of working out. I primarily want to work out like I was before because of 1- loss skin prevention and 2- better weight loss. HOWEVER after watching his video -- I'm confused. He's absolutely right -- when you work out, you burn X amount of calories, but with a VSG, and since I'm so fresh out of surgery, I can't possibly eat more than I'm supposed to in order to prevent the stomach from stretching...and on top of that -- I have such a limited amount of nutrients coming in since I'm only eating 3 times a day 1/2 a cup of food. And I'm worried about stretching out my stomach I mean I can't even eat and drink at the same time anymore because we're told not to. There's no way to eat more unless I bump it up to 4-5 times a day of eating (but that's stage 3 of the diet and that begins in 3 weeks). And also another myth -- skin doesn't have muscle, so how can you tighten your loose skin (if and when you get there). But I see so many overweight people who have gone to the gym and don't have loose skin. I see other surgery patients who never went to the gym and have so much loose skin. So yeah...I'm really confused as to what to do. I'm barely at my beginning, so I'd love to find an answer as to what path I should take, but I'm not an expert and I don't have all the answers. I know I need to consult with my nutritionist and possibly a personal trainer (but their sole purpose is gym-related) but my surgeon okayed it and encouraged it...

    I’m 3 weeks out also and I can also eat like that with no issues. Like you, fish is on my “soft diet” list and I can take pills, gulp water and other drinks with no problem. I almost wish I had more restrictions eating.
  6. Every morning here too - can't stop myself, it's so nice these days when the scale is always going down. I avoided scales for months at a time before. Once I stop losing it'll probably be once a week or so just to keep tabs on it.

    5 Weeks Post-Op

    I also had my op on the 4th April (5.5 weeks ago) and I'm comparing my journey with you girls. I am very worried that I am eating too much so early out. I keep reading posts about people who can barely eat a postage-stamp sized piece of ham! Can I tell you what I ate today? Breakfast - 1 x yoghurt pot (100 calories) Lunch - 100g / 4oz of pork sausages and vegetables (250 calories) Snack - 50g / 1oz of chicken pieces (150 calories) Dinner - 130g / 4.5oz of salmon fillet and spinach (200 calories) I didn't feel any real restriction. I ate all of it fine. I'm pleased with the protein, but is 700 calories too much at this stage? Could I stretch my sleeve with this? For reference, in 5 weeks, I've lost 26lb. Thank you for any replies!!!

    Welcome to the group. Lots of great info on this site. I had gastric sleeve 3 weeks ago. Its been a interesting journey. hopefully your next step is getting started with your pre op testing. Is insurance covering it or are you self pay?

    Good Afternoon, I am new here. Today I submitted paperwork to a bariatric surgeon to discuss getting a gastric sleeve. My doctor and I met today to officially get his blessing as my current weight loss has stalled out. I just can't get over the hump. I've lost almost 40 lbs over the past year with diet and exercise but I just can't get any further. I have diabetes, knee pain, and I am not as young as I used to be. Looking forward to meeting other folks in various stages of the same journey. I'd love any tips, tricks, good vibes, etc. as I navigate this whole process.

    How often do you guys weigh yourselves?

    I weigh myself most mornings, nekkid, after peeing. Usually first thing after I get up. When I hit a rough stall, I won't do it every single day. I assess whether it is doing more harm than good and decide accordingly. But, I only "count" the weight that is on the anniversary of my surgery. I track all the weights in Baritastic, but the official weight in my weekly spreadsheet is Monday's weight (or Tuesday if I am out of town that weekend). Every day is not for everyone, but I find it helps keep me on target. And, back in the olden days when I didn't weigh daily I would go off the deep end and then gain 10 lbs or whatever it would be. I'm not concerned about doing that now, but I'm trying to prepare myself for the long term and what I know helps keep me honest. It's a very personal decision, since we are all wired differently.

    May 2022 surgery?

    I tried to multi-quote and I did the same quote 3X. my bad. I'm 67 ...hoping for surgery in mid june and today CIGNA approved me. YAY! I meet with my surgeon on Monday, 5/16 and hopefully get a surgery of 6/8-ish. I started a modified liver shrinking diet one week ago ---all per the surgery cooridnator --- it was 2 protein shakes, one under 300 calorie meal and 2 snacks (usually less than 100 calories). I lost 5 lbs. Today I started the all liquid protein shake eating plan, and the surgeon will tell me where to go with that protocol when I see him Monday. Good luck to everyone here on the way to surgery or recovering.
  14. Hi everyone. I am exactly 1 week post op today and I feel like I didn't even have surgery because I'm still waking up with the same hunger pains I had before surgery. I'm hungry all day. Can anyone give me some advice as to what to do to calm this hunger? I'm still on the liquid diet so it's protein shakes, pudding, jello, yogurt, and water all day long...     May 2022 surgery?

    My surgery is Friday the 13th. I just had my LAST meal before surgery because I have to do only shakes tomorrow until surgery. My Dr had me on 2 shakes/1 meal/day for 2 weeks pre-op. The one meal had to consist of 3-4 oz of a lean protein, 1 cup of NON-starchy vegetables and 1/2 cup of either brown rice, whole wheat pasta, or sweet potato or sprouted wheat bread.

    How often do you guys weigh yourselves?

    I weight first thing in the morning after I pee buck naked every morning that I have a scale available to me. Having said that, I travel more than half of the time, so I only end up weighing myself maybe two days a week - Friday and Saturday, or Sunday and Monday, often. But this week I'm at my parents' house and I've weighed every day for almost a week!

    For the first couple years I only weighed at my follow-up appointments. This was less a choice than it was bowing to reality since I didn't fit on home scales. When I could fit on a home scale I weighed whenever I saw a scale for a couple weeks just for the novelty of being able to. After a couple weeks the novelty wore off. I returned to just weighing at monthly follow-ups. Once I stopped the monthly follow-ups I just weighed at medical appointments which pretty quickly became my annual physicals. I don't weigh at home.   18. I thought I would be more obsessive about it and want to see every pound that comes off. Turns out, I weigh myself once a week. That way I don't see the daily fluctuations (which I know are normal, but I still don't want to see them lol) and the weight loss has a bigger impact. I'm still struggling with pain in my largest incision as well as the stomach muscle behind it (honestly, that muscle is the bain of my existence right now) so getting that wow factor from a week's worth of weight loss helps in dealing with the lingering pain.
  19. I think you can't expect everyone in your life to change everything in THEIR lives because you are having surgery. He was trying to give you a day off from cooking, but it felt more stressful to you. If you're going to start resenting his way of handling food, you're going to have a hard time moving forward, especially if you know he doesn't appreciate your responses (snarky comments - no one likes those!). FWIW, I eat out like 90% of my meals because I travel for work most of the week and sometimes for 2 weeks in a row. You can eat out, you just have to think about what you're going to eat. I eat fish and veggies, or chili, or pulled pork, or a burger minus the bun. Or basically anything I want - even pizza if nothing else is available. I just don't eat very much of it and I try to limit the carbs (pizza is very rare, but sometimes it's what everyone else is having and I don't like being left out or being a party pooper). Don't worry about every single meal being perfect - that's a way to set yourself for failure. Just aim to eat well 80-90% of the time, and you'll do great!

    Pre-op diet

    I’m over half way through 2 weeks. I found that sipping every 3 minutes (like they say for post) is helping me through it. Never hungry. Over 100 oz a day. Craving only cocktail onions. Only thing off diet has been a tsp of diluted apple cider vinegar.

    IS THIS NORMAL?

    About the first week , I could only do small sips because of my esophagus being stretched and it was "extremely narrow" according to my surgeon. Drinking didn't bother my stomach but it hurt my throat. After about a week I was drinking pretty normal but could not take huge gulps, if would feel like I was swallowing a hard lump of something. Now, 7 weeks out, I can drink a lot and fast. I wouldn't say I chug like before surgery but I can definitely get water down quick. Before I had surgery I just kept reading "sip, sip, sip" and I was worried I would never be able to drink normal again but that was short lived and I was back to normal in no time.

    Hi there, I've had my sleeve surgery on 29/04. I was so scared but after the operation I was good. I struggled to get water down after operation.
