Anxious - Lonely - No Friends to Support My Journey
BajanSleeve replied to Born in Missouri's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Miss Fish, welcome to this forum. Have you tried doing a google search or even a Facebook search to see if there are any local Bariatric or WLS support groups that meet in your area? Online forums are great but really and truly face to face groups are ideal. Also, have you ever tried going to therapy? Honestly I am a huge advocate of therapy having gone through it at various stages in my life. They will help you get to the root of your challenges and confront some of the reasons why you have used food as a comfort and crutch. Its important to deal with that because even after WLS those drivers are still going to be there. My pastors have also done great counselling with me over the years that have really helped me heal and pushed me to grow to the next level. By any chance do you go to church, synagogue, etc.? Hopefully you will find a place to express yourself on this website and get some encouragement along the way. Hugs from Barbados -

I was suprised with sleeve surgery a week ago.
BajanSleeve replied to mmckimmey's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@mmckimmey What a horrible experience and I am so sorry for the trauma you went through. My advice would be for you to make an appointment with a nutritionist asap because your case is very different to us who have the VSG for weight loss. Your case is special and you need to know specifically how to get in the nutrition you need so that you wont be losing weight but maintaining and gaining even. There are some basics that may apply in that your stiches need to heal and seal. So staying on liquid only for a certain amount of days is important to allow t Make sure you get some Nexium capsules and open the capsule, open it out as far back into your throat as you can and drink down the little balls. Its important you take one of those for 3 weeks following VSG so as to keep the acid in your stomach controlled. Buy yourself a LOT of dissolvable or LIQUID multivitamins. I buy those EmergenC packets and put them in my water daily. This website sells bariatric products so you can browse through buying some vitamin patches which are really easy to use. Make sure you get your calcium, iron, vitamin B's and Biotin in addition. The nutritionist will advise you more on your case but you will need to buy some good protein powder because you will need a lot of protein added to your diet since you will not be eating regular portion sizes of food for a while. I personally like to buy the no flavour protein powder rather than the sweet or flavoured protein powder because you can add the unflavoured powder to everything - to water, your drink, your soup, your food, whatever and that allows you to meet your protein targets without being limited. I buy a kind called genpro next generation protein because it has the highest content of protein per scoop (30 grams) which means I use less powder. However its very expensive. You will make it! You have come this far and life with a VSG is very doable. Just make sure you make that appointment with a nutritionist for your special case since it is not for weight loss -
You can also buy it from the Bariatric Pal store. You get points for posting in the forum, so it can lead to a substantial discount

Many people struggle with eggs. Some with cottage cheese. Here on the bariatric pal site, there are protein soups. They were all I ate for a while, and were great. Protein powders - well generally I detest the taste. But they ARE good and easy, so I played around until I found a recipe I could atomach - now I have it every day for breakfast. Give it a whirl but if you don’t like it, try out several. This was probably the 30th recipe I tried!! Here is is: One Nespresso shot of coffee (chilled) 20ml milk 30g vanilla protein powder (the least sweet one I could find) 7 ice cubes Blitz in bullet thingy and drink. Try recipes - there are loads on the web. You’ll find one or a bunch you like...

7 months post op
Road2Newme3 replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Good job!! Im 6 months out. I also had low b1 and iron but it was at my 3 months appt. I got the bariatric advantage iron and b1 (which is hella expensive) but at my 6 month appt all my labs are back to normal! I just hit 80lbs down from surgery. Best decision ever. -
Where are you able to find Syntrax? Is it a Bariatric Pal item, on Amazon or do you have to order it from the manufacturers themself?

I'm considering giving up my protein bar habit...real food is smarter this far out. I still want to keep caramel premier protein around because I love it in my coffee in the morning. I only drink about half a shake a day, so it's not a huge part of my diet. I lean heavily in the veggie protien direction. I eat a lot of vegan meat substitute...soy and mycoprotien. I eat a lot of beans and mushrooms and whole grain goodness. Pea protien with Brown rice protien is my go-to for adding protein to baked goods and soups. Never met a bowl of fancy oatmeal I didn't like...or a bowl of refried beans with sexy toppings. Yum. And...ya know...some vegetarian chili dumped on a baked potato is a fine thing:) Gotta say, I'm a sucker for protein muffins. Mostly, I make my own with oats, pea and brown rice protien powder...but sometimes I buy the Flapjacked Mighty Muffins that Bariatric Pal sells...and OMG...they taste incredibly naughty and they're not. Really good. I love me some protein pasta, too. Chock full of chickpeas, lentils and fava beany goodness. I think I actually prefer protein pasta to regular white pasta now. Trying to work more fermented foods into my diet to get the probiotics working for me. I do still love the occasional steak salad, chicken stir fry or pork chop....but it's a twice a week kinda thing. And I do love salmon on the grill lately. So good that way! I marinate it a little lemon pepper, olive oil, soy sauce and splenda brown sugar. Comes off the grill crispy and so so so delicious. Congrats on working toward vegan:) Your heart, circulatory system and kidneys thank you.

How are you treated by your mate!!!
Creekimp13 replied to holly7744's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
In our seminar we were told that bariatric surgery makes good relationships better and troubled relationships worse. (not saying your relationship is bad....just saying that it does seem to bring existing issues to the surface and demand that they be addressed) There's a reason bariatric surgery is often coined "divorce surgery"....because it does seem to be the catalyst of the end of relationships in a lot of circumstances. It could be his insecurity at the idea of you being more fit and attractive, it could be that he's attached to your old eating habits and doesn't want to change them, could be a lot of changes that come with doing something positive for yourself....assertiveness, confidence, outspokenness, interest in doing more, etc. Regardless of what's going on....I would take it seriously and work on it. Have the hard discussions. Figure out if you need some counseling to help sort through it....it never hurts. Best wishes! -
Thank you all for your advice! We do have good hospitals here at home but none that deal with bariatric patients so they might not be as familiar with any complications that arise?

I use the celebrate chewable multivitamin. I also have to take iron on top of what iron is in the multivitamin. I also take calcium, I use the dissolvable ones from bariatric fusion. A chewable or dissolvable vitamin D. Sublingual b12. Vitamin requirements may vary slightly based on surgery type and also if you are a female that is still menstrauting. Your surgeon may have further suggestions, such as not taking gummies or Flintstones, mine did. My surgeon also recommended chewable vitamins in the beginning followed by capsules if they were not tolerated. Tablets may not be as well absorbed if you are a bypass patient. Your surgeon should have specific information available for you.

Have you purchased any goal clothing for after surgery?
Frustr8 replied to Ylime's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Now my,public I do have a thought. I want polka dots, don't know if that sounds like something Obese Olive and her cohots would come up with. Even if that harkens to profiing, so be it. Maybe a pastel shade and knee, length or just above. I am tired of yanking my hem down through life. Maybe a 16 or 18? No dang it, it is going to be a 15 Junior, that's what size I want to be. And when,it happens, even if it isn't,until 2019 I SHALL POST IT ON BARIATRIC PAL-You people gave me the bravery to attack this problem!!!😝✊ -
I’m having surgery at Texas Presbyterian Hospital in Denton! Dr Michael Lee is my Bariatric Doctor, I’m 61 and think I have a pretty strong pain tolerance, so hopefully this will be a piece of cake.

Pain Pump and Blood Thinners
Frustr8 replied to michelle0721's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A pain pump, wow you must really be in California, around here we get a bottle of tylenol, some stool softeners, maybe some lovenox to shoot ourselves with to prevent, blood clots and a "see you, later" note. They are so scared about the, opiod epidemic some, people don't ev3n with get Norco. to bring home anymore. I hope I get more than a kiss on the forehead when I leave the hospital in July. I love 48 miles from there so the, likelihood of anyone daubing my fevered brow,on this town is pretty remote. Crazy hospital in Mount Vernon also known as the BandAid Station would say it serves me right for going over to Columbus, the fact they don't have much Bariatrics here, not withstanding. They did start doing lap band and sleeve but I need an RnY which is not offered, may have it by 2020,when they get a better general and Bariatric surgeon,to locate here. But I will not be getting younger and I want and need it now, not at their convenience.😪 -
Well I'm further along, I have even. had my presurgical blood work done, my deficencies that they are addressing , I am on Vitamin A , Vitamin D , my vitamin is a prenatal one for the extra iron, got an eyebrow or 2 raised at WalMart because I am 72 years old. I am also supposed to supplement my Calcium, the others are a once a day pill, but my Calcium is a new liquid I found at Wal-Mart, brand name is Wellesse, costs less than $10 & tastes like melted orange sherbert. take a 1 tablspoon twice a day. Other poster,is correct, most of the time you do go on chewable, I don't because of my low iron level and since I wear d3ntures it's hard to chew chewables, So far everything seems doable. I like Premier Protein quite a lot, Peaches and cream is my favorite, then caramel, then Strawberry, can't drink chocolate anything because of allergy. Muscle Milk is good, a little higher calorie count but I like their blueberry flavor, Eqaute Wal-Mart's house brand,is okay if you want to save a couple $. it just tSladtes faintly evaporated milk like to me. I also like Svelte, it's soy based a little lower in protein but I like its taste.I haven't tried the dry protein yet but will probably go with whey isolate unless I develop an intolerance. Anything else I can help with just ask,if I don't have the answer someone else on Bariatric Pal will!😝

I wish my parents felt that way about sugar and similar. They, did feel that way about literature, never had comic books, I guess the political-correct term these days is "graphic novelettes". Goody goody that I love and enjoy fine literature but I'm still FAT! But. with the help of Medical Advances,an excellent surgeon in. Center of Excellence Bariatric Hospital, my body will be tuned up, my tool implemented and a Rebirtday will happen in July. And with hard work, a better diet I'm place, this fat shell will shatter and the real Frustr8 will emerge. Gosh,i am excited by the prospect of it all. My time to shine is coming, may not be completed until 2019 but I have the urge to make strides before then!😝🚩😝

Perspectives on Losing Fast & Slow
Frustr8 replied to GreenTealael's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Think of a stall, Folks. as your body rebooting. Every so often it takes a moment or so,to try to get itself in balance and then when it relaxes a little more weight comes off. Remember it was, happy when you were obese. It is just that you and your bariatric surgeon didn't agree!😧 -
Will do!! I have an appt for labs in August may go sooner if I’m feeling sluggish.. I’ve read reviews from DS patients that didn’t have an issue.. so I’ll just have to find another source to cover everything... out local hospital is Bariatric accredited Ans sells Bariatric vitamins and foods in-house so that will bey go to !! Thanks for the heads up!! I have a month supply and will use accordingly and go from there

I still eat popcorn. No problems. However, corn on the cob gets stuck and I can't tolerate it. Not sure why? To be successful, you're going to have to give up a lot of your old eating habits. Sugar, in particular, is a challenge for most. Anything refined. It's hard and it takes a lot of discipline. You can't go into bariatric surgery thinking the surgery is going to do the heavy lifting long term. It will do its part and help....but ultimately your habits need to change. People seem shocked when we say....yes, you lose weight through DIETING after surgery. But it's true, it's all about changing your forever diet and your eating habits. The surgery helps, but the dietary changes...the biggest effort... is squarely on you.

My insurance doesn’t cover WLS, I have been thinking about it for a while and saw a couple of bariatric doctors until I found one I liked, total cost is $13,900 but I feel really good with my decision as when I went for my Pre-op test at the hospital, one of the nurses commented on my surgeon. She basically said that he was very good at making sure his patients were completely informed on the procedure, the risks and the benefits. She said she sees a lot of these surgeries from several different Bariatric surgeons a she likes my surgeon the best.

O and D you will like this. My new booklet from OSU, the one called Life after Bariatric Surgery, says level 2 and 3 diets are not considered balanced and you should remain on them 8 weeks maximum. Granted maybe you are getting some vitamin enrichment but still....! ..
