  1. Hello everyone! I am a 35 yr. old, married, mom of 4 and I live in the Kansas City, MO area. My surgery is scheduled for 3/31/09 with Dr. Stephen Malley and I am on my pre-op diet now. I am excited, scared and miserable..lol This pre-op diet thing sucks! I dunno if I have ever been so hungry in my life and this is only day 4! I am in constant pain from a back injury (made worse by the weight) and my knees. I am currently 234lbs and 5'4'' tall. I have lost 5 pounds in the last 3 days. I just keep telling myself the payoff will be worth whatever I am going through now. Keepin' my eye on the prize. Anyway, just wanted to say 'hi' and introduce myself. Since I have pretty much secluded myself until my surgery, I am sure I will be on the board a lot! lol

    My life changing year

You look amazing!!! Thank you so much for the inspiration! I love, love, love seeing people's before and after pics - just makes it crystal clear that the weight WILL come off if we use our sleeve!
  4. Ok I have jumped through the hoops, and seen the surgeon ,dietician, psych had the upper g.i and have almost lost the weight to be cleared for surgery. I have been reading the posts on gastric sleeve and some are kind of scary, Is there a lot of stomach pain? what is the best protein shake? where can I find out more about the type of foods we can have post op surgery? any and all help is greatly appreciated. I am one who doen not like to reach out but I need help.......

    Pms?

My cycle is always 28 days and on time... after surgery it was 2 weeks late.... and then 6 weeks late.... surgery can mess with your cycle and so can weight loss. I would give it a couple of months to level itself out ... if it doesn't then get checked out????

    No one understands!

Hi Angela! I'm Chrissy, from NYC and just turned 25 less than a month ago I'm just 6 days post-op VSG I can relate to how you feel. I gained a ton of weight after a bad relationship, depression, and anxiety. Then after gaining that weight, I gained more, all because I was so upset with myself for getting so heavy to start with. Sometimes things felt like a downward spiral, honestly like I hated the world. I was annoyed by friends who could shop anywhere, jealous of these girls on TV and social media with "perfect bodies", angry that other people would channel their energy into other things while I sat and ate. To be straightforward - I hated myself and I was so, so angry. Now I'm nowhere near perfect, but over the 6 months of preparing myself for surgery I've been working on ME in every aspect. It's not easy, some days I have a horrible attitude and go back to self loathing. BUT it's a process, one that you deserve to give yourself time to go through. This is your journey, and it's not meant for anyone to understand. I don't even understand my own! But the point is that you're taking steps to becoming a happier and healthier you, and that's already something to be proud of! Hey, like Kanye says, "just let me be great!" Depressed

My husband and I go Saturday (2-27) for the LAP-BAND® seminar. Why should I be depressed you ask? Simple. In order for my insurance to pay for the surgery, I have to be morbidly obese (no surprise there) or, obese with other major heath issues. I'm five pounds under the magic fat zone. I've always been healthy, no high blood pressure, no diabetes. What I do have is asthma and this makes exercise very difficult. The amount of weight my frame is carrying around makes my asthma even worse! Unfortunately, asthma is NOT one of the issues that will qualify me without those extra five pounds. I'm going and praying that I somehow qualify. I'm tired of being fat. I'm tired of dieting and starving myself to lose weight, only to gain it all back and more. I'm tired of my self esteem being in the toilet (a dirty toilet at that!). I'll be back after I get the word. Wish me luck!

SICK & TIRED of eating pig slop.

I think I may have skipped the whole puree thing... my nut told me soft food like chicken cooked soft, beans eggs etc... yeah.. and as long as you pay attention to it and dont do a lot of super high in salt, fat and sugar things then you will still shed the weight... i had to cut mayonaiise because it was making me nauseous... I think after a month you pretty much just pay attention to what works and what doesnt work.

    Someone please help!

Do you think you are the first person to put weigh back on after WLS? Do you think he/she has never experienced exactly what you are going through with another patient? The difference? The ones who ultimately succeed suck it up, get help, and get back on track. Those who don't, lurk in the shadow of self doubt and self pity and just pack on more and more weight. By coming here, you sound like the former not the latter. What would you tell ME to do if I were in your shoes?

    Over 65

Well, I'm done and 3 days out. Pop cycles seem to be the only thing I can do. I'm not hungry after taking the meds I've been given. For those of you that may think you're too old, I'll be 73 next month and wanted my life back. The last 5 years when my band failed I really started to gain weight. I'm looking forward to being able to jump off the boat and get up the ladder again. Kayaking too. Just need to get through this recovery period, I'm not a patient woman. I realize it is only for the next four weeks of the rest of my life.

    Pre-Op and Conflicted

I feel for you. most of us have lost weight many times but always gained it back plus more!! I have lost weight so many times and I have tried every weight loss gimmick that came around some I did up to 3 or 4 times thinking the same as you. If you stick to your program WLS's are a tool to help you get it off change the way you think about food and they help you maintain!! That is a huge thing to think about, how many times have you thought aww I've got this I don't need anything because I am strong and commited!! It is now coming to light that obesity is a disease We need help. Most of us don't even know what it takes to lose our weight. But....educate yourself and your wife then make your decision!! Good Luck and KEEP ON KEEPING ON!

    Support For Lap Band Spouse

It's really great that you are committed to being so supportive of your husband! However, I must agree with sanction...no matter how good your intentions, you will never get him to do what he needs to do unless he wants to. I have a similar situation with my fiance's cousin. He got a lap band a few years ago and he did lose a heck of a lot of weight, but he is still morbidly obese. His band is way too tight, he vomits constantly, eats only slider foods, etc. I talked to both him and his wife about the fact that he NEEDS to go get an unfill and speak to his surgeon, but he won't listen. I know there isn't anything I can do about it, but it is definitely frustrating because his health is at stake. All I can do is hope he will realize that things can get better if he puts in the effort. Just keep loving and supporting your hubby and hopefully he will get there!

I know i made a mistake by telling my mom and a couple of friends of what i was thinking about doing. My mom promtly told me (out of love i know) "Why don't you try counting your calories?" You know i have been there done that over the years and redone that again! I love her but my first thought was "hummmm ...wonder why i never thought of that?:guess " I have been doing alot of reading and studing on the internet and i know i want to do this if the insurance and doctor will back me. But i also know that like Ceradad said about his wife my husband is going to be the one to give me problems. I know he wants me to lose and worries about my health but he will say this is too risky. I have other health problems that my weight doesn't help, i have fibromyalgia/ Rheumatoid arthritis, and i am borderline diabetic. I think for my health this is the answer and i'm willing to make the changes .I think my doctor will back me up 100% cause this man has seen me do Curves, weight watchers all the diet pills hes precribed with bad results. I figure i will call the insurnace after i see what my doctor says weds. Thanks all of u i feel some better about. But why did i think the band had to be removed? ???:cry
  14. i used to keep up more...now that living with the band is becoming more "usual"--i have not put in too much. there's not too much to say other than i think my band is REALLY tight and if i get stressed out or am in a situation that feels tense--then NOTHING goes down--not even ICE CREAM! i didn't lose ANY WEIGHT AT ALL for 1 month--but all of a sudden, without doing anything special--i started losing again. the combination of the really tight band, not being able to eat under stressful circumstances (such as business travel--thank god for packing optifast shakes) and basically sticking to easy food like yogurt, juice, some hamburger and a few raw vegetables (radishes work, don't know why)...and voila--weight loss has been happening. and hunger has been minimal--which is why i wanted the band in the first place--to cut down on that endless "i'm HUNGRY" feeling. am also wearing a suit that i haven't worn in 4.5 yrs---ta daaah. that feels good. i even went shopping for a smaller pair of pants for work--as i was embarrassed that my "regular" pants were just about falling off--and i had to keep pulling them up--boy that is UNCOMFORTABLE to do while you're walking down the hall... i keep looking at the scale--not moving very fast in the downward trend--but i can still feel changes in clothing--and some people finally commented...so...SOMETHING must be happening--right?? right!
  15. Congratulations on your surgery. Most people leave the hospital with few pounds of Water weight from all of the IV fluids they pump into you. I didn't weigh myself right away because I knew this and didn't want to be discouraged. But, when I did a week or so later, I was down 8 lbs and then dropped another 5 in the next couple of days. It is pretty common and you seem to be on the right track. Good luck!
  16. hi there. I am new here. I have my first consultation on Tuesday. I am trying to make a consultation with another surgeon too so that I can choose the surgeon that I feel the most comfortable with. I have struggled with my weight my whole adult life. I gave birth in August and I was already overweight and gained 40 pounds during the pregnancy. I lost 20 of that right away and have gained about 15 of that back. My main concern is if I will still be able to breastfeed my daughter. I am back at work and breastfeeding about 3 times a day and pumping 4-5 times a day. I am not sure if the limited calories will be able to sustain that. I am also at odds about telling my parents about the surgery. I want to tell them. I can't imagine keeping a surgery from them but I know that they won't agree with my decision. My husband is a huge support though. He sees how unhappy I am with my weight and thinks that this will be a great thing for me.

Hello GVD, I just read your posting and like you I am 62 yrs young. I have had a weight problem (yo-yo
  20. I am scheduled for surgery on October 28. I'm self pay (in US, not in Mexico) and have my second appointment with my surgeon in a few days. The problem is that I have been gorging on food because I feel like I'm saying goodbye to a lifelong friend and habit. I'm so ashamed that I've gained at least 5 pounds and maybe more in a month and feel like the surgeon is going to be upset. Did any of you have any weight gain in the weeks before you started your pre-op diet?
  21. My surgeon was very very very straight forward in that if I gained it would be looked upon poorly, and that if I didn't loose "enough" during pre op diet that they would cancel. I wouldn't worry as much since you are in the pre op, but I would change your habits now. I changed my habits months before my diet began and didn't loose a lot, but it helped tremendously during my pre op diet.
  22. I had the lap band on March 15th 2017. I started off weighting 205. Today i weight 185 a total weight loss of 20 pounds in 4 months. Is this normal shouldn't it be more? I have a 10 cc band and currently have 6.5 cc in it. I been working out 4 to 5 times a week and feel like I'm not losing anything for all the hard work I'm doing... Also i have PCOS and i thought this would help it but no luck yet... I'm thinking i should have got the sleeve... Any thoughts or words of encouragement. Or how's the weight loss for everyone else going at 4 months in?? Please help... Sent from my SM-G935P using BariatricPal mobile app

    Do You Ever Feel Silly??

I do because I have always been secretive about how much i weighed...especially being so close to 350lb...and i have lost almost 70 lbs but I am still huge. Ppl noticed that I have lost weight but i feel like if i tell people i have lost 60 something lbs they will be like really where
  25. It sounds like she had Gastroesophageal Reflux Surgery. This is a surgery to treat GERD. It can cause weight loss after surgery because of being on a liquid diet and necessary dietary changes to treat GERD, but to my knowledge, it is not used as a weight loss surgery.
