    Post op injections?

I was prescribed Lovenox as part of my post-op treatment protocol. As others have mentioned, the needles are really small, 27 ga. normally. I don't even feel them. Regardless, the benefit far outweighs the minor discomfort. My pharmacy did not have any alcohol prep pads when I picked up my script (my Dr. sent me the script 2 weeks before surgery so I would be prepared when I got home). I went to Amazon and found them at a reasonable price and got a small box. Just remember to let the alcohol evaporate for a few seconds prior to injecting, to minimize discomfort from the alcohol.

    Stalls??

almost everyone has their first one within the first month or so after surgery. After that, it's really an individual thing. If you're sticking to your program and the scale isn't budging, then yes - you're probably in a stall. Just keep on sticking to your program and stay off the scale for a few days. It'll eventually break and you'll be on your way again...

    Stalls??

Just about everyone hit a 3 week stall, after that there is no rhyme or reason from what I can tell. Everyone just stalls when their body needs time to readjust. I am just about 5 months post op and the only stall I saw so far was at 3 weeks.

    Stalls??

What time frame did y'all hit the dreaded stalls? My first was at 3 weeks. I'm at 15 weeks now and trying to see if I'm in a stall or doing something wrong. Sleeved 4/26. SW 216 CW 188

    Anyone stopped losing?

Ooooou I probably should update :) So after a 7 week , what I think was a stall. the scale finally started going down. I am down 8 more lbs in just 1 week and I’ve changed nothing . So exciting! I’m sure it’s water weight but IDK why it held on for so long. Hang in there you guys. We got this !

    August surgery buddies!

Wow, I didn't realize how hard it would be to sleep through the night. The most I can sleep is 3 hours at a time. My doc prescribed gabapentin (spelling?) and said it would cause drowsiness. Maybe I need to try taking it before bedtime.
  7. I had the gastric sleeve a little over a month ago, I experienced dumping according to my nutritionist, it happened after I ate a small scoop of vanilla ice cream at my daughter's birthday party. But it was nothing like it's been described to me in the past or on forums etc. I just got super tired and took a 3 hr nap when I got home. I'm very careful not to eat sugar now, or if I'm going to eat it I'll eat a very small portion, like 1 jelly bean 😂. Besides, since surgery most sugary things are wayyyy too sweet now anyway. Dumping can present differently in sleeve patients than it does in bypass patients if at all. I just happen to be one of the luck ones.
  8. Stalls are part of the process. We all experience at least one. They usually last 1-3 weeks. Think of them as your body judging needing a time out to catch up on the changes: change of diet, weight loss, etc. They pass when your body is ready. Just stick to your plan & you’ll be fine. We all have fluctuations in our weight. Everyone. You may not have been aware of your natural fluctuation in the past unless you weighed yourself as regularly as you do now. I fluctuate a kg - 2.2lbs. Can be fluid retention, constipation, diarrhoea, what you ate or drank yesterday compared with today, hormonal fluctuations, etc. (I used to gain a good 3 kgs in the days before my period & would lose them in the first days of my period.) The thing to remember is that your weight loss will never be a straight downward line. It will zig & zag, up & down, plateau, drop more slowly or quickly one week to the next. As long as the general trend is downwards you’re golden. PS Congrats on your weight loss so far .

    Post op blood thinner

They gave me shots while in hospital for 24hrs (don’t think it continued fora second day) & that was it. But others on this forum have shared they had to give themselves injections for a couple of weeks. It may depend on your general health status & history, mobility, etc. I found the injections themselves didn’t really hurt but the bruises in the various sites were tender. If you are concerned about injecting yourself (I would be too) ask if there is an alternative med. Though that may depend upon you’re able or allowed to swallow meds in the first week or two after surgery.

    Wish you knew before surgery…

I understand. I too am a single person. My family aren’t just ‘down the road’ either & I also don’t work anymore so I have all day to fill in. I do have a small circle of friends but they work, have families & their own interest & commitments. I don’t have a lot of hobbies either (except shopping - does that count -ha). I read lots. I’ll also happily go to the movies, art gallery & dance performances alone. I set myself a task to do everyday. Clean a wardrobe, drawers, cupboard or pantry, potter in my garden, various household tasks, etc. I even iron my tea towels as a task. I’ll watch/steam/download true crime & other documentaries, lifestyle programs, & other programs. Play some games on my iPad (love a jigsaw app I have). I’ll ring or txt friends & family every week too (been having a txt conversation all morning with two girlfriends). It’s amazing how your days do fill. I don’t exercise as such (just some stretches everyday) but another activity would be going for a walk, swim, gym visit, yoga class, … Joining a yoga, Pilates or other class, a book club are opportunities to meet people too & chat with those with similar interests. Are there adult education classes in your area where you can learn pottery, to paint, write a short story, or whatever? Get to know your local shop keepers & assistants too. I was chatting with the lady at my pharmacy this morning - yep, I can be that person holding up the line - but it’s an interaction & you never know what they can share about local activities or events you could attend or invite your work colleagues to join you at. Get to know your neighbours. One of my neighbours & I get together randomly for a cup of tea/coffee & a chat. I met some other women through her too as she invited me to join a sip & scribble group.

    July 2022 peeps!

    August surgery buddies!

Hi there 6 weeks actually starting next week! It’s very hard following my pre-op diet while at work and stressing about possible exposure to COVID-19. I really don’t want to take any chances of having my surgery postponed. I feel like if I get stir crazy I’ll go back to work. I hope your recovery goes well and you’re able to function at work easily. I work at a prison so there’s a lot of walking unsure if I should rush back? Which surgery are you having? I’m a revision sleeve to DS due to hypothyroidism & pcos.

I gained 3 lbs one month post op

I’m still pre-op but I agree with your mom. 50 lbs in a month is a lot of progress. Check in with your Nutritionist if you can and see if they have any advice to help you through this. They might see something for you to adjust or that you are missing. I’ve read many times about stalls, hormone fluctuations during monthly cycles … water retention from salt (broth or canned soups) all impacting fluctuations. Stick with your program, keep track of intake and check in with your team (that’s the advice my program drilled into me). Good luck. I hope you are through this stall soon and pick back up with your progress!

    Post op injections?

Yes - I give myself a shot the day before surgery, i believe they give me blood thinner in the hospital and then for a set number of days after (I forget off the top of my head how many days). Here is a link to the video my program gave me. If you aren’t taking lovenox, yours may be different but this will give you the general idea. https://www.lovenox.com/patient-self-injection-video The needle is very thin and small. It’s given subcutaneous (in the fat). I was warned may bruise at the injection spot, and you will not give two shots in the same spot. I take ozempic shots once a week and they occasionally pinch for a SECOND. I’m expecting the lovenox to sting a little or burn a little more than the ozempic - just by the nature of the medicine.
  15. Has anyone else been given a script for injections of blood thinners for blood clots? Just had my 2 week appointment before my surgery and she said I need to give myself injections to help reduce the risks for blood clots postop and I am freaked out. I hate needles and now I have to stick myself for a month. My daughter already said no way in hell is she doing it for me.(she has a needle phobia too)
  16. In my first month I went from 300 to 250lbs. Once I finally made it past the three week (everything makes me sick phase)… I actilually began eating a little later than recommended because I couldn’t keep anything down. I’m now 1 1/2 months post op… I’ve finally gained my energy back and am working out but I not only stalled but gained 3 lbs my mom feels like I shouldn’t get down about it or obsess about it but has this happened to anyone else?

    July 2022 peeps!

Hi@FierceFire. I hope this gets better for you before you start back at college. I'm also starting back to college on the 22nd. I'm scheduled to get some IV fluids tomorrow (day 3 post-op). I'll let you know if that helps.

    3 Month Stall?

After losing rapidly during my first 2 months, I stalled for almost my entire 3rd post-op month. I tried everything, and the scale didn't move. It drove me bonkers. Finally, the stall broke and I started losing at almost 2 pounds a week. Have patience and trust the process. You'll start losing again.

    August Surgery Buddies!

It’s been a week since my gastric sleevectomy, and all things considered, things have progressed fairly smoothly. The procedure went down without a hitch. I was up walking around that afternoon. The most pain I experienced was from the incision where they pulled the stomach out (it’s been a full week, and it is still a bit sore, but definitely much better…,hold on to your side if you have to cough or sneeze). It was strange to drink from the one ounce cups at first (you know it’s coming, but until you have to, it’s hard to appreciate it fully). It is definitely a different feeling when the stomach fills up so fast with so little fluid, but it is real. Since I’ve been home, everyday gets a little bit better. The pain in my side is going away, I’m able to get outside to walk a couple miles each day (not all at once, but working my way back up), and it’s getting easier to feel when I’m getting full as I’m drinking my protein shakes. (I will say that I am looking forward to the end of next week when I hit the purée portion of the diet and can enjoy the taste of “solid” food.)
  21. New to this group and just started my two week pre op diet. Feeling good so far and looking forward to the surgery date. I previously had the lap band from 2009 - 2017 when I had it removed due to the port flipping 3 times on me. You all got this and it will be worth it at the end.

    August Surgery Buddies!

Hey everyone! I’m finishing up my Post Op Day 1, I had surgery yesterday. Pain was pretty bad yesterday, but managed with the IV medication that starts with a D (I’ve already forgotten the name). All I had by mouth yesterday was ice chips. Very tired. Walked around my room a few hours after being post-op recovery. Took loop around the floor later that evening. Didn’t sleep at all at night because they literally were in my room doing tests at all hours of the night. I was also very nauseous so they gave me zofran and I never vomited. Day 2 started with only ice chips until after my barium swallow study was complete. That barium fluid tasted exactly like what Harry made Dumbledore drink during the lake scene. Never have I ever tasted anything like that. My bowels took forever, so I didn’t start on clear liquids until late afternoon. 1 oz per 30 minutes. Lots of gurgling!!! Much less pain by the afternoon Day 2. They took me off the IV pain med and moved me to Percocet pills and they last longer in the system so that’s good. My surgery was at 7:30am so I’ll have been in the hospital Tuesday, Wednesday and at least the morning of Thursday. Looking forward to going home even though this hospital is so nice (it’s brand new with it’s only bariatric wing). i did a week of strict OptiFast shakes only and did a self prescribed bowel prep because I have horrible constipation and I wanted all that out before surgery. I lost 11 pounds in that week, so I was down to 251.1 on my surgery date. full liquid starting tomorrow. They want me to have 3 portions of 2 oz per day. There is no way I’ll come close to my protein goals. let me know if you have any questions!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Same boat. Sometimes I work really late, and around 8-9 pm, the hunger monster attacks.. :). I started having a fat free, protein yogurt, this didn't cut it. A bit later, I started adding some granola, because "I don't eat enough carbs during the day"... and it went downhill from there.. :), weight loss went down to ~1 lbs / week. Had to stop, and go back to basics. Now, when hungry, and still have some ways to go before bedtime, I eat an omelet (even if it's 9 pm). After I started doing this, weight started going down again.

Surgery Date 7/27/22, New Life in Progress!

@SurfingMama my ultimate motivator was my liver function numbers were not good and my liver was enlarged about 3 times the size it was suppose to be. My endocronolgist said my best option was significant weight loss to hopefully reverse the damage. He explained that there was a chance it wouldn't help, but there was really no other treatments for NAFLD & NASH, than weight loss. If I did nothing and my function continued to deteriate, I would eventually need a liver transplant. So I worked my butt off to loose as much weight on my own as I could to see if there was any improvement. 40 pounds later, my numbers started to improve and there was a palpable diffrence in my liver size. My family and I talked about it and with all the risks, the rewards way outweighed them so I made plans to move ahead (my surgery is next week). I am thrilled at the prospect of the weightloss and the benefits that alone brings, but if it hadn't been for my liver I am not sure if I would be on this path right now, but I am grateful for the opportunity to become all round healthier and feel confident in my decision to have the surgery. Congrats on your progress and I am so glad you were able to remove all the cancer!

    August surgery buddies!

Yeah I’ve been straight cathed 3 times, and the doc finally decided a full catheter would be best… so I’m stuck at the hospital for an additional night to hopefully get the bladder going.
