    Ideal body weight

My program calculates body weight for females as 100 lbs = 5 feet and then + 5 pounds for every inch above 5 feet. I'm 5'6 1/2 so my ideal weight is 132.5. However, they said realistically I should expect to end up 195-235. If you split the difference, it's about 60% of my ideal weight loss that they are projecting. So maybe go based off the above calculation!

    After 4 month Surgery

I assure you, you are way more active than I am at 4 months just with your children and school! That's not a great thing but it is the truth right now. Probably the most important thing you can do, at this point is follow your food plan (meet your protein goals first...always), drink, drink, drink, take your supplements and LOG EVERYTHING. If you are preserving muscle and are not 100% sedentary, you'll have something to work with when things slow down and you are ready to tackle fitness. Just don't wait too long. If you do the key elements, even without a full fitness program, you will lose weight. you just can't let the others slip. I'm still losing daily and I can't do much of anything except sit and sleep from an unrelated, elective surgery I had 2.5 weeks ago. By the way, You really should be proud of yourself for taking this on with all of your other responsibilities. You're amazing!

    Brand new here

You can do this. Your frustration with your current situation will propel you forward! Your provider will take your medical history into account and suggest which surgery is best for you, or they might tell you any of them will work for you and let you choose. So for now just familiarize yourself with the surgeries available. Whether or not weight loss surgery is more invasive than a hip transplant? I can't really say. I think most weight loss surgery nowadays are done robotically, so the recovery is easier because robotic surgery is more precise and there's less tissue disturbed, unlike open surgeries. Along with TAP blocks and other modern techniques, pain is much better managed now than probably even ten years ago. And yes, I think all of us on this site can relate to you, it's the same reason we all began our journeys. Best wishes to you!
  5. WLS can really change relationships. My ex-wife had WLS six years ago. Her surgery was very successful (522lbs to 165lbs). Once her weight stabilized she had several reconstructive plastic surgeries. Shortly thereafter she asked for a divorce (I was no longer her best option). I had my surgery last year and have lost about 115lbs. The way women interact with me has totally changed. This includes my ex-wife who I still have to talk to since we parent our kids jointly. All this has actually lowered my already problematic estimation of most people.

Can someone explain this to me...?

Sharonintx, I've read some of your other posts and know you take a more liberal approach to eating compared to some others on this site. I don't want to be a slave to Protein shakes and always have to do low carb everything. But I have a 37 BMI and worried I won't have weight loss. Can you talk a little about your diet and what's worked for you to lose without being super, super strict. Thanks:)

    Help with PCOS diet

Hi Kami, I have PCOS as well. In my pre op diet I lost 29 lbs. since surgery (6/27/13) I have lost 20lbs. I was feeling a little down...even after I spoke to my surgeon because he didn't seem too thrilled with my weight loss either. He told me I was at the "low end." Anyway, I have since changed my attitude and I Celebrate EVERY success...even my non scale victories! You will be successful, even if it goes a little slower than other people. The point is...you are losing!!!! Celebrate that!! Since you know that you stall often just make sure you stay on track during those times. Also, find some fun things to do during those times in order to take your mind off of it....bowling, movies, long walks, etc. that stall will not last forever! So...about what I eat. I eat 5 small meals a day, all focused around Protein of course! Each meal is about 10-15 grams of protein. So, one day might be 1. Greek yogurt 2. Drumstick 3. Small Protein shake 4. Another piece of baked chicken 5. About 3/4 cup of chilli. The amounts are pretty small, even though it may seem like a lot of food. I can only take 3-5 bites of anything before I'm full. So, I only count each meal as 10-15 grams of protein. I also drink Water in between these meals. Sol, I hope this helps a little. I just want to encourage you...slow and steady WINS THE RACE!!! We can do this! :-)

    Weight Loss

Your weight loss is great, right now you need to be concentrating on healing. You've got another couple weeks before doing any heavy exercising. You should be averaging about 11/2-2 lbs a week. the band is a slow, steady way of weight loss. In a year or two we'll lose just about as much as other forms of WLS. There are people here that have lost 200lbs with the band, it just depends on our dedication and will power. You seem to have both.
  9. Hi everyone, It's been a while since I've posted, largely because I've been pretty busy enjoying my new life. But Lately I've been a bit worried that I may be on the edge of losing too much weight! I just stepped on the scale and weighed in at 198. I peaked a few years ago at 380 and my surgery weight was 351 this past May, so eight months ago. That is over 150 pounds lost in eight months! I had been feeling pretty good with good energy. But I had some knee surgery (which I had previously written about in this forum) a couple weeks ago and am now in a pretty poor state of mind. I'm sure it is a combination of painkillers and general post-surgical lethargy and depression from sitting all day, but man do I feel weak. I feel like a bag of bones with a lot of gross saggy skin! Should I be concerned tht I've lost too much too fast? How do I slow this down? I still can't eat anything to speak of. For example today I had a single serve container of Greek yogurt with fresh blueberries for breakfast, a 16 oz. bowl of chicken soup for lunch and two squares of pizza for dinner. I had a snack of three triscuits and a slice of cheese. Most days I also have a protein shake but am out today. I literally can't eat more than this. Anyone else been here? Anyone have any suggestions on how to slow this train down? I can't get out to the dr. until I have this cast removed and am approved to drive, probably another three weeks or so.
  10. My Dr submitted me to insurance before the pre-op testing is done. The pre-op testing is to make sure the surgery is safe. If they have your weight history, you are a candidate and you passed the psych eval, that should be enough to submit you.
  11. Hello Everyone! I have not had my band yet (going through the process), but I dooo have a couple of questions regarding scars. I scar pretty easily (I have marks on my legs from mosquito bites from when I worked at a camp a few years back if that tells you anything), and I also have stretch marks (obviously). Does anyone have any recommendations for ointment/cream/whatever for scar fading and/or stretch mark fading? I've seen ads for numerous brands but I've never had any experience with any of them and don't know what works vs what doesn't, or if any of them actually work! Also, has anyone started working on fading stretch marks before losing weight? Is this a good idea, or is there any reason to wait until I've lost some weight? Any input is greatly appreciated!

Too Much Too Fast? Kinda Freaked out!

Update. I have been much more diligent about protein. I am drinking two 40 gram Muscle Milks a Day in addition to whatever food I eat. Still losing! I am down to 188. Holy Freaking Mother of Mothers! I never thought I'd EVER weigh this little in my life. I think I was in my 180's last in middle school! I am feeling a bit better, knee is coming along and I have been out hiking again. I joined a health club and have begun working with weights with my son. I am SO freaking weak! My son, just turned 18, is 4 inches shorter than me, and WAY stronger. That hurts the pride a tad. But he is very cool about it and helping me out. I am going to hit it 3 days a week on weights, two days a week at Physical Therapy, and one day with a long hike. We'll see how it goes!

Too Much Too Fast? Kinda Freaked out!

Congratulations on your weight loss. Don't be too worried that you may be losing too much. The weight loss phase will come to an end and you will slide into the maintenance phase. It will happen quite naturally. The three most important elements after weight loss surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.
  17. I was weighed on a special scale that told my BMI, plus fat %, bone density and muscle mass%. Maybe you have less muscle and more fat would bring your BMI numbers up. Just a thought. I personally carry a lot of muscle, so my goal weight was a lot more than others of my stature. Without this special scale, I would have to lose another 23 lbs for my height, but because of the ability to see muscle mass, I have more than reached goal. This really helps over the standard BMI charts
  18. Hey ladies. I need some help from those of you that have been successful with weight loss with PCOS. My body stalls for at least 3 full weeks with every 7 pound loss. Weird right? I am almost two moths out (8-25) and I have lost 15 pounds post surgery. I have lost 65 total though but I would like to know a couple of full day examples that have worked for you. I realize everyone is different but I would like to experiment. Thanks in advance!
  19. No I have never lost to goal before. I just slowly crept up from the day I got married 18 years ago until one day I said enough was enough. I wasn't sure I could even do this but I have done well. I am 37 years old, sleep apnea likely gone now, high lipids but overall healthy. I love food though and just really fear that the weight will slowly come back on like it did over the past years. For the first time in my life I've been seeing a dietician, log all my intake, and consistently exercise. I really just fear my appetite. Sometimes it's so intense. I am thinking reducing the ghrellin will help. I have insurance approval cause my BMI was high when initially seen at surgeons office. I'm enjoying trail running, but will I always enjoy it? So many unknowns and I'm so nervous. I'm a nurse so I've seen what happens when surgeries go bad too. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  20. Hi, today is Thanksgiving Day and I am thinking of how much I have to be grateful for. I had my sleeve surgery done on March 30, 2015 and it has been nothing but good for my health, energy, well being, joy and enjoyment of life again. My loss has stopped and I am maintaining a very good weight for me. There isn't a day that I don't thank God for taking me to the gastric surgery information, resources and ultimate procedure. I was one sad person who felt locked in a body I didn't recognize and was becoming a person I didn't know. Now, I am healthier, happier, nicer, younger looking and embracing life again. The people I have come in contact with along the way who have helped me in this journey will forever be in my heart. Thank you.

    Eating and First Dates.

It's difficult on first dates...coffee dates are good but when it's a meal, and I usually get something Protein based and just say I eat smaller portions now. One guy I was dating for a couple of months always commented and when I told him, he was okay with it but was judgmental. Needless to say, not dating him anymore (there were other reasons as well). Even when out with friends they have noticed, and it's fine. I just take half of it home. Everyone has noticed my appetite is less = weight loss lol win win Good luck! I'm going out next week with a guy and am going to have to deal with the same thing :S

    Newbie banded 4/4/09

my surgeon said walking would not hurt right after surgery but any heavy lifting would have to wait until 6 weeks after surgery. I would say as long as it's low impact and not weights , whenever you are feeling better would probably be fine.

    Pre op diet emotional

You can do this u was the same way I cried about everything and thought I was going crazy, even had martial issues and had a huge fight with my husband over nothing. Ugh made me crazy! You can do it and it is worth it!! At least after surgery you won't really be hungry and for some reason your not so crazy and emotional over everything. Weight loss stopped

We could go into all kinds of possible reasons why your body is doing what it is doing, but the bottom line is that it doesn't matter. You are fine. You are experiencing what most of us do, and it passes. I've grumbled about slow weight loss and little stalls since about the 3rd week after my surgery, but look at my ticker. What in the world do I have to complain about? We all get frustrated and scared when the scale doesn't budge. Try your best to ignore it, follow the guidelines, and trust the process. You are gonna be great!
  25. My diet when like this 1 day of clear liquid hospital) 1-3 weeks of full liquids (second hospital day, after one week, incorporate at least one pureed food to see if you can handle it) At 1 week and two days, I attempted tuna, no water or mayonnaise. It held down. The next day, I had tomato soup. It held down good. Next day, I had tomato soup with some tuna in it. I recently tried cream of chicken and held it down perfectly. Next stage is soft foods, which I'll attempt to try Thursday or Friday. After that, I goto my first healthy weight visit instead of the surgical team visit and we can maybe move to solid foods. Every doctor/but is different!
