  1. Pre-op liquid diet is almost harder than the surgery! The first 2-4 days are the worst, my post op diets you can't have caffeine, so it's great time to give it up now. I was allowed 2 protein shakes a day plus cream soups and sugar free things, less than 40 carbs less than 1000 calories practically no sugar for 2 weeks. Within 2 week I lost almost 15+ pounds try not to cheat and for me keeping away from carbs helped. It's tough, it's like bariatric boot camp.

    rny vs mini

You need to find out if your insurance will agree to pay for 2 bariatric surgeries (i.e.one to remove the band and the second to do gastric bypass). If not, you need to work with a surgeon that will do both procedures in 1 surgery. I had MGB surgery in April 2017, which resolved my acid reflux and allowed me to get below goal weight, BUT now I’m dealing with bile reflux so will be revising to an RNY in the very near future. YMMV

    Bariatric Spray Vitamins

I wish that was possible. The taste would be very difficult to mask for a bariatric level multivitamin.
  4. My personal feeling...is that the honor system is good enough for a free message board on a site which has the primary purpose of selling bariatric products. A couple more reminders here and there if people continue to violate suggested protocol...seems like the wisest course of action. (to me) That said, I don't participate in gender restrictive rooms because I think they're kinda stupid in 2018....so it doesn't affect me. I was just pointing out that it is a potential legal civil liberties issue...because I like the site, and believe there is enough volatility among the membership to red flag a potential legal issue with gender exclusions. (if your purpose is to sell stuff...err on the side of caution and avoid this nonsense...hell, i'd avoid "gendered" rooms all together) A good business model would be to weigh the business generated by these rooms against their maintenance, controversy, and potential problems. Are they worth it? Maybe they are. I don't have enough data to know. Either way....it ain't up to me. And I'm glad of that.

    Keto Diet?

I get a ton of my protein from carbs:) Whole wheat english muffin = 5g protein Baked potato = 5g protein Serving of Protien Pasta = 11g protein Veggie burger patty = 10g protein 1 cup canned mushrooms = 3g protein One slice health nut bread = 4g protein Flapjacked Mighty muffin = 20g protein 200 calories raw oats = 11g protein 200 calories brown rice = 5g protein 200 calories split peas = 14g protein High protien bariatric diet does not have to be low carb:) You do want to avoid refined sugars, and high glycemic index carbs...but low glycemic whole grains and legumes are wonderful healthy foods. At least Half of my daily 60+ grams of protein come from plant/carb sources:)

    Keto Diet?

There are a lot of Facebook groups out there dedicated to Keto after bariatric surgery. I've done Keto before as a regular avenue for weight loss and it does work, but like anything else it requires strict adherence. Due to it's focus on high fat, you can't "cheat" and add in a few carbs because that just makes it the standard american diet and likely the diet that put so many of us here in the first place. I haven't dug into how people do Keto after surgery, but with the need for protein to be so high it doesn't make sense to me that Keto would work. Bariatric focus is supposed to be High Protein, Low Carb and that is different than High Fat, Moderate Protein (Keto).
  7. Bariatric Spray Vitamins are one of the most exciting breakthroughs in the delivery of nutrients to the body since pills were invented nearly a thousand years ago. Taking supplements orally is the fastest, most efficient and convenient way to take your daily dosage. Oral sprays deliver the purest form of supplements by sending them directly into your bloodstream. When you spray into your mouth, the micro-sized droplets are instantly absorbed through the capillaries and the nutrients are absorbed within seconds without stress to the organs. Sprays overcome the absorption problems accompanied by traditional nutritional supplements and are ideal for weight loss surgery patients, older patients and those suffering from any digestive complaint such as Crohn’s Disease, Colitis, Gastritis, and IBS. Check them out at the BariatricPal Store

    Facebook group??

Yeah the problem with bariatric groups being secret is that they're secret and thus no one can find them to join. lol Hope you do find one that works for you. Are we not enough???
  9. On the topic of water... I love Water, but even I get sick of it. Someone on this board turned me on the Powerade Zero and O M G it is so good! It tastes just like kool-aid to me. My favorite flavors are Grape and fruit Punch. (There is quite the lively debate somewhere on this board about the Grape flavor!) I hate grape everything but I used to drink fruit punch Gatorade when I was sick, lol. I can drink plain ice water any time. I am thinking about buying the Bariatric fusion pink lemonade drinkable vitamin packs. It was delicious and 2 packs a day covers your vitamin needs. My surgeon’s office gave me a sample of the pink lemonade and the mixed berry. Didn’t care for the mixed berry though

6 days post op ds surgery

I was the exact same way, and to be honest it was a good thing that they pump so many fluids in us! My stomach was so sensitive after surgery that I couldn't get in the amount of fluid or protein I needed after surgery right away, but they told me that was ok, the fluids from the hospital would hold me over for a while. You just have to take it slow, day by day, and figure out which method works best for you! It's so scary at first, but it really does get easier over time. Some things that may help you would be to try drinking through a straw. They say not to because it can add air, but everyone is different. The really small straws were a lifesaver for me because I found that I was always so thirsty, I would forget to drink slow which would cause me to gulp air or drink too much. That hurts way worse than drinking through a tiny straw, which allows you to be conscious of how many sips you are taking each time. Also, find a water bottle that you favor! I found a vacuum sealed one with a little handle that I could carry mindlessly with one finger, the cup itself was only 16oz, so it wasn't heavy or bulky and it stayed cold forever, and it was very slow flowing! Also, getting a bariatric app to track your liquid and protein intake and setting alarms to remind you. That way you can see how far you need to go, and you feel accomplished when you reach your goal! And keep in mind - EVERYONE has bad days, and it's ok! The 60 to 80 oz of protein and 64 oz of water are long term goals. Making yourself a 12 oz protein shake with 2 scoops of isopure and splitting it up into 3 servings will help tremendously, because that's 50g right there! Also, if you mix it with Fairlife fat free, that adds on an additional 15g of protein or more. You already meet your daily goal, it tastes smashing, and it's not as heavy as stone other drinks because its lactose free even with the added protein. I am a little less than a month out and its a battle every day but the fight gets easier. We'll get there [emoji1] Sent from my LM-G710VM using BariatricPal mobile app

    Considering Lap-Band Surgery

let me share the facts about a lap band...https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20496124 this study indicates that more than 50% require reoperations with a band and that at the study end only 53% still had the original band. Most doctors won't do them any more because of the atrocious complication rates. mine permanently damaged my esophagus. the other bariatric surgeries don't have anywhere near those complications and revision rates. buyer beware. You want anecdotal stories there are more than 3,000 people in the failed lap band facebook group who all tell very similar stories about their experiences with the band. I dropped weight on the band, then it turned on me and caused reflux/vomiting/choking multiple respiratory infections, illness after illness etc. many people go through a honeymoon period with it and then it turns into the experience I had or the others on this thread...some sooner others later. I was a huge band advocate in the first few years. now I would not wish one on my worst enemy.

    TMI - Pooping at work

There is an old bariatric saying - never trust a fart. Never.

    TMI - Pooping at work

If you find that you are having excessive gas or gas more frequently - not you personally, any bariatric patient, it could be a sign of eating too fast. I'm not talking about shoveling food in like cadets in boot camp fast, but just quick enough to introduce pockets of air into the digestive track. If possible, walk right after eating. You could just burp a lot of it out.

Anxious - Lonely - No Friends to Support My Journey

I showed up at the ER of the hospital where I received my bariatric surgery. I didn't hold back telling the ER staff about my experiences. They were all shocked and angry. They all insisted that I file a formal grievance. I don't take blood thinners or aspirin, etc. I just tend to bruise. Heavily. My surgeon is very experienced and the surgery was a success. The disaster had to do with not treating me as a chronic pain patient and a bariatric patient in unison. I brought PAIN with me to the hospital, just like I brought my coconut Chapstick. Focusing on the bariatric patient in me and neglecting the chronic pain patient who shared my body was the tragedy. It was also unforgivable that my belly was never examined by my doctor or the hospitalist before discharge. I literally went from the recovery room to my inpatient room and was discharged the next day without seeing my doctor or receiving a discharge exam by the hospitalist, by a nurse, NOBODY. Apparently, the hospitalist only dropped by to discuss my pain-management grievance. I had a drain with my gallbladder or knee replacement surgeries (I can't remember), but not with this one. I suspect that my surgeon uses a different method. Different is not always bad. Again, the surgery was a success... but to make sure that no one else has to go through what I did, I was encouraged by several nurses at the hospital to lodge a grievance. My only goal is to see that protocols are changed. I don't want some nurse getting in trouble. The hospitalist was obviously trying to save her own butt, and, I believe, wouldn't hesitate to try and throw some nurse under the bus.
  15. I know that you said you did not want to be judged for not being heavy enough, BUT you are not heavy enough for gastric bypass. Please do not mistake this comment for judement, the STRUGGLE IS REAL and your pain is real. Research says that bariatric surgery should only be done on low BMI patients if they have uncontrolled diabetes and the gastric sleeve would be the preferred choice. Low BMI by surgical standards is still 30-35, which you are still below. Here in the U.S. physicians take an oath to "do no harm". I do have to question any bariatric surgeon that would perform gastric bypass on a patient at such a low weight/BMI. Inducing a malabsorptive state on someone with very little to lose is irresponsible. Losing weight might happen, but so will other vitamin deficiencies if you are not eating right. I am not trying to be judgemental, but please consider other options before going "under the knife" again.
  16. Looking to start a group for August surgeries ! August 8th is my surgery date! Very bummed that it’s so far .. yet so happy to have a date! Bariatric program start date:1/22/18 finish date- 5/29/2018 surgery date (bypass) 8/8/18
  17. @Saddy I commend you for being honest. I was in denial about my morbid obesity for years. It was only when I had that ah ha moment coupled with some dangerous health issues that I understood my life was in danger and so I began to change my eating habits. I started counselling. After changing my habits, I decided to do WLS. I personally believe that until you get to the root issues of why we run to food, sweets, junk food to comfort or emotionally support us, no amount of WLS procedure is going to 'cure' us. Something has to switch in your brain FIRST otherwise you will just go back to the same cycles and habits. If you are able to find a bariatric therapist I think it would really benefit you before you commit to another surgical procedure. I have always been weak with self discipline in the area of food and I am only now, at 48 years old, realizing that there comes a time when you just have to tell yourself no and not give yourself everything you want whenever you want it. Its easy to eat 1200 to 1500 calories a day if you are eating chocolate bars, sweeties, ice-cream, gummies, etc. even on a reduced stomach size. I hope you find encouragement to keep on going deeper and support in your journey to get HEALTHY and not just loose weight. Cheering for you

    Experimenting before dr Allows😳

@EsoKev I don’t remember the exact name of the surgeon. But I since spoke to the surgeons team and the bariatric center and they said the doctor asked me to stay off the medication due to it counteracting with other medications I was given. Also I’m not the only one who has been told it’s generalize. And as you can see other people have the same surgery but can eat 2 days or even a week after surgery. Each doctor has their reason but only you know your body.

Diet update and psych eval woes.

I was so so nervous and discouraged about the 1,200 calorie diet the surgeon wanted me to do, but it has turned out to be okay. I go over the calorie limit much of the time, but not by much, and I am able to take it in stride and not beat myself up over it. But lately it has been easier to control my eating (I almost feel like the promise of surgery is bolstering my spirits), but half of the days I still have that deep deep hunger that just won't seem to go away. I'm not sure how long I'd be able to keep up this diet without the eventual help of the surgery, but I seem to be doing okay with it for now. YAY! In other news... wow, it is hard to get a bariatric psych evaluation. All of the qualified individuals in my provider network are extremely backed-up, and many of them are not taking new clients. It is frustrating because I will be done with all of the other requirements by the end of July, but my psych eval appointment is at the end of October! I can't even get a surgery date set until after I've had the evaluation. I'd rather not have to wait that long, but I don't know of viable alternatives... ...Except I was googling and I saw bariatricpsychevaluations.com - I am not sure what to think about it... if I could get it done more quickly, paying $150 seems like it would be worth it, but is it legit? I was able to find a few reviews, and it seems to be split half-and-half - some people are happy, but other people never got their evaluation sent to their surgeon. Hard to know what to do. To be safe, I should probably just be patient and wait until October, but I need to have this surgery, and now that I've made up my mind about it, I don't want to wait. I need to be healthy YESTERDAY.
  20. And I am glad for both, I am counting myself lucky to have met. both. you gentlemen on Bariatric Pal.

When did hunger strike for you?

Nine weeks out, I've felt hunger since day one. No, it's NOT head hunger like everyone tells me, I am legitimately hungry, but definitely not like before my surgery. I try to keep hydrated and keep my protein up but it's really a struggle and VERY annoying when your doctors say it will go away (umm it hasn't) and (some) bariatric group members say it's not true hunger. I'm disappointed, I heard a lot of even most of the members of my post op support groups here locally say they don't feel hungry or rarely do, some of them are years out. But, I don't give in, I drink my water, stick to my 3 meals and maybe have one protein rich snack. I guess it is what it is.

    Phases are confusing

Just like the sleeve is more properly on here Laproscopical Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy but most people say. sleeve or VSG. The y in Roux en Y. is because the 2 rerouted segments of the small intestines kind of resemble that letter. And sometimes we bypasses well technically I'm only a future one, call ourselves pouchers or kangaroos in defence to our rearrangement. That said, we all love each othet, no matter the rearrangement, we all are members in,the same Bariatric Scheme of things. Are you a little less confused?

Hey don't forget Bariatric PalMX as an option. That's where I would,go if I were paying cash, I'm lucky I have good enough insurance to do mine in my own state.😝🚩😝
  24. Joanna you are now rocking this summer. I've got to stay active in Bariatric Pal just to see, what you do next, you not only rock the casbah, you done built it!😛👍
  25. I got my first round of labs back the other day. I was surprised that almost everything came back within range, seeing as how I'm only taking a non-bariatric multi-vitamin once a day. Especially surprised I didn't have low calcium. I was a little low on iron, but not anemic. The only thing that came in low was potassium, which kinda makes sense because of the frequent diarrhea. I've stocked up on white beans and PowerAid Zero, and they are gonna re-test in a week. Regardless, they spooked me enough that I went ahead and picked up the Bariatric Advantage multi (with Iron), and some calcium citrate. Will try to take doses both day and night, although they said something about taking the calcium two hours after the multi, which is gonna be difficult.
