    Sleeved powerlifters?

Hey Hanne, Sorry for delay! Been a busy few days. Yes, I've had alcohol a few times now - mostly I'll get a glass of wine and sip on it, which I've done 3-4 times. I had a wedding in December where I had 2 glasses throughout the whole day/night. I read a lot about alcohol hitting you a lot quicker after surgery, which is why I've been very careful and sipped only. Can't say it felt any different to me than normal but I do find it can give me heartburn now. I love wine and I'm sure they'll be times where I miss being able to join in like a I did before, but I can't say it's been an issue for me yet! Your perspective changes when you are forced to think much more carefully about everything you put in your body and the things you think will be hard just . . . aren't.

    Caffeine

I weaned myself off regular coffee a couple months before surgery. Per Kaiser bariatric’s guidelines, after surgery we cannot drink beverages with carbonation (due to gases), caffeine (acid/risk of ulcers), alcohol, and sugary drinks (liquid calories). Since I started the pre-op program (July 2019) I haven’t had alcohol or surgery drinks. I DO have half-caff coffee every morning. ;-) and throughout the day water, diet Snapple, and herbal tea. I don’t miss alcohol or carbonated beverages.

What did you eat today :) ?

Your entires are great. What normal eating! Do you still measure everything or are those guesses? When you were still losing but at te point when you could stomach most foods, did you allow yourself rice and alcohol and all? Or do you ink eat that now that you're on maintenance? I ask bc I find myself stuffing to just eat Protein and want rice and fruit and all as well. Thanks and awesome work!

    What's your favorite protein bar?

Another thing you can do with Quest Bars is pop them in the micro just a few seconds..it will soften them.. oh I am now loving the chocolate Chunk... they are better than candy or something unhealthy... I also found some Protein bars are funky tasting because they have sugar alcohol which really wrecks my system , but Quest does not have it... GNC has them on sale most of the time you get 4 for the price of 3... I have a gold card too which gives me discounts...They have a new white chocolate raspberry I haven't tried yet but I am sure I will get it soon...
  5. i have had this same struggle since surgery. I talked to my dentist about this at my last check up and she recommended Breath RX mouthwash -- it's expensive but it is a non-alcohol based mouthwash (which dries out your mouth and promotes bad breath) -- here is info from the website: BreathRx Anti-Bacterial Mouth Rinse is alcohol free and sugar free. It contains Cetylpyridinium Chloride (CPC) and ZYTEX®, our secret weapon in the fight against bad breath. CPC's know anti-bacterial properties kill the bacteria that lead to bad breath odors, then ZYTEX neutralizes their resulting odors. -- it has really helped me.

Lying about not getting surgery is awful

I am the Manager of a Serviceman's Club in New Zealand & I have told everyone that I'm getting a gastric sleeve next month. People are used to seeing me at the Club after hours with a beer in my hand. Since I have given up drinking alcohol and am drinking water instead everyone asks what's wrong with me. So I tell them that I need to get rid of my Diabetes and Sleep Apnea + the excess weight so hopefully I can extend my lifespan. Everyone has been 100% supportive and if someone ever wasn't supportive then they aren't worth talking too. I am proud that I have finally done something to improve my health.

Wow... now reading all of that was quite and earfull! I am new around town but I can tell you that I feel extremely comfortable at this site and have garnished much of the information I was looking for. I think the fact that this site is not as hugely busy as Spotlight is why I feel comfortable. I like being able to really get to know othe members. It's probably because I am a country girl at heart.... the big city gives me hives! I do spread the word about this site because I truely think it is awesome and I hope that it never turns into a Spotlight type site. LapBandTalk seem JUUUUUUSSSST right to me! Alexandra... It's so funny... I do the same thing here and save my woes for my private journaling or other less populated sites...I have asked myslef frequently why I do that???? I think it comes from years of just being happy if another person liked me... it's almost taboo for a heavy person to be anything but happy...jolly and funny. I like it so much hear that I just don't want to bug everybody with my probs. and by gosh... I should be able to solve them for myself shouldn't I??? Sue... I don't feel that I fit into any of those catagories... I'm always early... quiet as a mouse unless you ply me with alcohol or I know everyone REALLY well... endure the process because I know it usually amounts to some level of success... am considerate of others and their ideas and personal space but really would like the same in return... I dunno... what the heck number does that make me???? Anyhoo... it is just my opinion... but I think this site is great just the way it is . (o: I think if there is a site that one likes because of the increased number of members... just ignore the posts by the person that bugs ya. Nobody can irritate you if you choose not to let them. Just my two cents... Darcy

    Can I drink now?

Have one for me! The only word of caution I have is that alcohol seems to affect me much easier now! Sip slowly and enjoy!
  9. Since I am not a professional therapist I can not give your professional advice. Besides, if I were, you'd have to pay me! I would consider therapy for the two of you---alone and then together. You HAVE changed. He hasn't and maybe doesn't want to. Remember, there are few things more irritating than: an x-alcoholic, a born again Christian, or a recent weight lost "know what's best for every one". He may be able to listen and talk to someone objective rather than be "preached" to by you===even well intented. Get going on getting your marriage back on track. Do NOT put therapy off---hoping it "he will come around". I know. Wishing you nothing but many years of happily married life.
  10. Army of me: Reversal isn't an option as there's no viable tissue left. It's all just one giant ball of scar tissue. Eventually they'll end up having to do a radical gastrectomy and take out everything above the small intestine and he'll end up with a J-tube. Unfortunately, this will not do much for the pain because of all the scar tissue that's built up and the damage to the liver from all the acid leakage. One doctor told him his liver (or about 1/3rd of it) looked like that of an alcoholic....All necrotic and nasty and green but that he knew it couldn't be alcoholism because it was only on the 1/3rd portion. He's putting that off as long as he can bear to because he is so upset about the notion of being thirsty and not being able to even take a drink of water. He tells anyone who asks him about the surgery to either lose the weight on your own or just enjoy being who you are now because he can guarantee that regardless of how miserable they might be overweight? It's NOTHING compared to what he goes through on a daily basis. Oldoneyoungagain: I sincerely hope it comes fast. We're constantly one paycheck away from being homeless and while SSDI is no lottery win by far it would at least make sure we're never on the street between what he'll get for that and what I make. The last thing: IDK how many of you have been through or know someone who's been through the provess to get SSDI but based on our experience? I don't understand how so many people are on it. You're treated from the get go like you're some sort of burgler who's trying to break into the USA's safe and they're doing everything they can to keep you out of it. Tony made between high 5 figures and low 6 figures when he was able to work. Would someone PLEASE tell me what sense it makes for him to try and "make out like a bandit" on less than 1/4th of what he was making while he worked? It just makes no rational sense but I'm telling you.....You're treated like you're trying to get away with something from the get go. Tony was a workaholic and loved his job. He would give anything to be able to go back to it. Again....Much thanks for all the well wishes. It's cathartic to have a place like this where you can just vent and no one judges and is so supportavie....
  11. Hello everybody, my name is Nicole. I had surgery on 2-24-14. My doctor uses out patient hospital services so I got to come home @ 10pm. This is most definitely one of the most important choices I've ever made. And I don't mind sounding quite selfish because in fact I did it all for ME! My stats: 5'6 S/W 272 C/W 254 G/W 140ish I lost 12lbs in the 2 week preop diet, which was basically the Atkins diet, I was only aloud 40 grams of carbs a day, and had to achieve at least grams of Protein a day. I cut out all caffeine, alcohol and carbonated bevs when I started even though I didn't have, I just made it a lot easier now that I really can't have that stuff. I'm so excited to finally start this journey. I have been heavy ALL my life. Even looking back at childhood pictures showed me over weight, not just big boned, as some like to say lol. I love this forum, it's helped me so much. Thank you to everybody :-)

    Heartbroken...

Hey Barbara! I'm doing a lot better than I was a couple of days ago. My liquid diet has failed horribily. My willpower amounts to nothing! I've honestly tried, but to me, it's like asking an alcoholic to stop drinking cold turkey! Oh well... not much I can do now until post-op. I am being strong now... I lost 3 lbs last week on the diet so I'm down 36 lbs total for pre-op. My husband has come around a little bit. After our big blow up and after these wonderful responses, we've talked about it a little/I've gotten over it. I do realize that he thinks completely differently than I do - that doesn't mean I'll ever appreciate it! LOL How are you? You'll get through this - we'll get through this. I'll definitely message you and tell you the TRUTH about everything once I can get my sliced and diced self awake enough to post something on here! My mom's coming up today to help take care of me for the next few weeks and Ryan (my husband) took the day off. He even went grocery shopping yesterday for my mom and bought foods for him and her to eat - all LOW CALORIE! Who would have thought! LOL Best of luck to ya!

    Infidelity (long)

So painful. I did not have an affair so I can't exactly relate, but I think I relate to that feeling of an empty spot in your heart that you try to fill. In my past I have tried to fill it with food, even alcohol but those were short term fixes. I wonder if the tendency toward "flirting" is something similiar - trying to fill a painful, empty spot in your own heart. I am not a huge counseling advocate, but it seems to me that examining yourself right now, perhaps with a counselor can be super beneficial. I lost 150# and I call 2013 as my crazy year because I was so disoriented. If I was prone to using flirting/temptations/men to fill that emotional void - it would have been bad. It might be helpful to tackle this stuff BEFORE you lose weight because WLS, rapid weight loss, becoming thin is a head trip for some of us ... and you may go through some tough, and emotional times. So, I had a past relationship that I had just a hard time letting go of. It wasn't even the relationship, it was the IDEA of the relationship that was painful. So, there was a phrase that I found hurtful "move on let go" and I made it my password on something I logged onto daily. It stabbed me in the heart everytime I typed it, but in about 1-2 months it stopped doing that. I changed the password, and I no longer felt that wanting. If I were you, I would remove yourself (or him or whatever) from any contact, any social media, delete his number. There is no reason you should even know who he is dating... Good luck in working this out. I am single after being in 2 long term relationships basically my whole adult life... and although there are things about singledom I love; having a loving supportive husband is a lot better.

    Post op nutrition

I'm 11 months out and I simply eat healthy, balanced meals.....Protein, veggies, fruit, fiber and grains. I do avoid white carbs like bread, pasta, rice, and alcohol, but have any and all of them on occasion...probably 3-4 times/month (a lot more when on vacation). I don't measure my portions or count calories, carbs or fat. I have a 30-40g protein smoothie everyday so I don't have to worry about hitting my protein goals and I keep a running tally in my head so I know I'm hitting my fluid requirements. Been maintaining 10-12 pounds under goal for over 3 months, so gotta say this is the easiest "diet" I've ever been on.

    Help!!!!!!!

Hi MsNeka, I'm just starting my process with banding but from all I've read on this site everyone is happy with it and lots have been banded for years so don't concentrate on the negative, I think we still have to use our heads when eating but we're not getting any better the way we are...RIGHT?...I know people that had the Gastric By-Pass that have gained their weight back but if you see what they eat you'd see why. A girl at work had hers By-Pass 2 years ago and she has put on some weight but she snacks on cheetos and junk, plus she drinks alcohol quite a bit too so there you go...we still have to be sensible when we eat and with the banding we won't be able to eat as much either...think of it that way...how many diets have you been on and when you went back to eating the "Old" way you gained it back? Every one...It's a life changing procedure...so don't concentrate on the negative think POSITIVE!!!...You can do this!!!
  16. Okay, Girlfriend, what are you smoking and why haven't you offered me any? LOL! "Inspiration goddess"?!? While I do dig the whole goddess thing, I'm not sure what kind of inspiration I am. However, I appreciate the vote of confidence, but I'm certainly not perfect. I have found that if I ever start (or should I say, fall off the wagon), it's hard to stop. Here is just what I can remember about my weekend. Evidently I had so much junk, I've blocked it from memory!!: Friday Night: 2 Margaritas, 3 blue hawaiians - first time we got to go out in a long time, kinda got carried away. There was a really good band that did stuff from the 80's! The drinks were small and not that strong alcohol wise, but I'm lucky I didn't puke or go into a diabetic coma. Talk about sugar overload! Saturday: I ate brownies, several of them as a matter of fact, don't even remember how many. Along with Sun chips. - total emotional eating Sunday: About 40 cups of coffee (that can't be good) and more Sun Chips. And now.... I just got back from my girls' school. I tried to sneak up there to drop some stuff off, but my oldest "caught" me. She wanted me to stay for lunch. So, to keep from seeing the guilt making "I'll need therapy one day" face, I stayed and ate school cafeteria lasagna. Yuck! It tasted okay, but I can only imagine what was in it. It's no wonder our kids in America are becoming obese. My daughter didn't even eat it, she chose a baked potato which had to be better even with the little tub of butter and sour cream. They wouldn't let me have one because they only had so many. So, I took one right in the gut for my kid!!! LOL! ONe of these days when I get several more degrees under my belt, that's going to be the first thing on a long list of things to try to change - school lunches! I mean, really. Needless to say, I didn't loose any weight, but I also didn't gain! But I'm done and it's over. Back on the wagon. Anyway, yes I'm going to start our recipe thread, but I'm trying to decide the best way to go about it because stuff gets lost. I'm not sure there is really a way to categorize it. I was thinking we could have posts for casseroles, salads, etc on the title line and then when someone adds a new recipe, they would just "edit" that post and add it to the bottom. Do you think that would work? I'm a little anal, can ya tell! HA!

    Getting over the guilt

I'm no therapist but it's obvious from the poster here that obesity is the end product of often very dysfunctional childhoods and resulting bad choices as adults. It just happened to take the form of food addiction rather than alcohol or drugs. While I was fortunate enough to have had a better childhood and had a very good life overall, my go-to choice whenever stress or anger or disappointment or pretty much anything upset me, was food. Period, end of story. Believe me...no one my height of five foot nothing gets to weigh nearly 300 lbs. just because she likes to eat.

    First Fill Today

My first fill (.50 cc) on May 23rd wasn't painful at all! It also didn't offer much restriction. I did notice that my band was tighter in the morning and I could eat about 10-20% less than before, but still a lot of food and still hungry between meals. My nurse measured what I already had and discovered I had 3 cc with surgery and she added .5, so then I had 3.5 cc. I went for my second fill June 11th and it was faster and easier this time and she gave me 1 cc and told me most people "green zone" within 3-5 fills. Now with 4.5 cc after 2 fills I know that there is something inside of me lol I can eat only a happy meal sized portion now and have to wait an hour or so to eat in the morning. I haven't lost more weight yet, though, because of poor decisions like actual happy meals and alcohol and Sobe drinks. My short term goal is to lose 15 lbs and be at 170 by August 1st. Hopefully ill have another fill soon!

    Psychological Evaluation?

I only had one visit and a "test" (which was more like a survey on drug/alcohol use, eating patterns, and emotional balance). My insure covered some of the cost buy my additional fee was only $40 to cover the test analysis... Plus my psychologist had my letter written in about 5 mins.
  20. I too am obese with no co-morbidities YET. Well hopefully their won't be any because on on my way to a healthier thinner me. I know can understand where you are all coming from, I used to eat very healthily, or so I thought, now I realise just how MUCH i was eating! Obesity and healthy don't go together, because being obese we are at much higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, strokes etc etc. But being skinny isn't synonymous of being healthy. A lot of skinny people can be alcoholics, drug addicts, so that's not healthy either! But I do agree w Emily Grace, we need to be honest with ourselves to be able to address our problems but as mommyoftwo says, obesity is a complicated and multifaceted disease, cause it is one, and it's not as simple as 1+1=2, that's why obesity is such a big problem! Good luck to all of you in your journey!

    Any regrets?

Regrets? ZERO. Nada. None. I've not been overseas since surgery but I don't see how that's any different than daily life for me. After the initial healing period, about 6 months before I felt "totally normal" again, I eat what I like in small quantities. I'm still compliant with my Protein goals, but eat, bread, Pasta, even the occasional sweet treat or alcoholic beverage, just in smaller amounts. I think I enjoy food more now that I'm not controlled by it.

    Party Food.

TNT, does the fizzy-ness of the beer effect you as well as the alcohol? I've read on other threads that a lot of bandits have trouble with fizzy drinks. What is the consequence of this? Is it just gas or PBs?

    Alcohol post op?

Hi everyone I was only banded 2 weeks ago and about to move from liquid to pureed foods but with christmas and new year coming up I was just wondering when it is ok to have a couple of glasses of alcohol. The only thing in my notes from my dietician is that alcohol is ok in small quantities but it doesn't say when. Thanks

    Alcohol post op?

Ok, this is gonna sound strange, but I can actually drink more alcohol now than I could before. I can handle it better. I just can't eat and drink at the same time because that makes me feeling violently ill.
