Calories and protein at almost 3 weeks
angelb429 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 19 days post op. Having a hard time getting in calories and Protein. I am barely making 300 calories daily. Protein shakes make me EXTREMELY nauseas, and I've tried many brands. I can tolerate yogurt, cottage cheese, broths. .and Water.. doc is on vacation but I see him on Fri. How and what is anyone else eating at this point? Hemp seed are high in Protein too... I have them, I'm pre op... In reviewing my papers from the NUT, I see they will be allowed post op too... Hemp seeds are soft so easy to add to yogurt, have a nutty flavor similar to flax seed. "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them" Einstein

When do we stop focusing on food?
Read2016 replied to girl4god77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think the focus on planning food will never end... As a teacher we have a saying if you don't plan for kids, they'll plan for you... I kind of see it the same way with food, if you don't plan your meals you will wind of making poor choice.. I do believe the longer you follow high Protein eating the easier it will be and as you move along in the process you will find more and more sources of protein..600 calories does not sound healthy to me.. During my trip to traders joe yesterday, I found hemp seed... 10grams of protein per serving, good for adding to yogurt etc... How do you keep your protein shakes from going bad?
Read2016 replied to ag0177's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I add lots of ice, keeping it in the fridge should be fine... I make mine with Water but will add Greek yogurt or cottage cheese or Peanut Butter.. Cinnamon or flax seeds... I like to vary the taste of it so I don't use pre made shakes. "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them" Einstein -

Summer is here and I always CRAVE ice cream. I have a wonderful ice cream maker and want to make some frozen yogurt and high Protein ice cream. I have seen some recipes online for high protein recipes for people who are trying to build their muscles and I think I can make them (they are usually almond milk, Protein powder and fruit etc) I would love to find some sleeve approved recipes and frozen yogurt recipes. Does anyone have any they just love to share?

I've stumbled on some interesting things lately ... both good and bad. I thought I would share them here and hope that others will do the same. :-) First, I found a recipe that looked decent enough (in terms of nutritional value, taste and ease), but it did not include the nutrition information so I was not sure. I then discovered a website that I will calculate the nutritional value of any recipe. Pretty cool! Check it out: https://www.caloriecount.com/cc/recipe_analysis.php That recipe was really begging to be served with rice or another grain, but I didn't want to add all of those calories. Trader Joe's to the rescue with Organic Riced Cauliflower - only 20 calories a serving: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wsuc0S-HsB8/VXmclJbbQUI/AAAAAAAAVo4/zs9oUSbegTU/s1600/DSC03584.JPG Could I "rice" it myself? Sure, but boy was this ever quick and easy!! My last interesting find was not a good one. I decided to splurge last night with a flavored yogurt that was not non-fat (I know - crazy, right?). So I had a Noosa, which I've had before. As yogurt goes, it's quite decadent ... it's like dessert without being quite as bad, and the added benefit of lots of protein! I've only had it a couple of times before and enjoyed their berry flavors, but this time I opted for lemon. SO yummy!! The problem? I was reading the ingredients and it includes ... wait for it ... BUTTER!!! Who has ever heard of butter in yogurt?!? Blech. And it's only in the lemon flavor. How weird is that?!? So it's back to more tame fat-free yogurt for me. After all, if I'm going to indulge in butter, I wanna taste it, and I want it paired with something that makes a lot more sense than yogurt.

Water and liquid intake is a struggle, i need to work on it. -

How many ounces are you ACTUALLY eating?
dashofsunshine replied to Afrikanaaa's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
18 months out and I max at 4 oz - I can eat 5 oz if it's yogurt (well, some days, lol...). With everything, some days I can only eat less than 4 oz, but I always max out at 4. I get around 900 calories per day and am in maintenance. Good luck! -
Btw... get some Greek yogurt. I watered mine down with almond milk. Not to liquid form, just thinner. It was a HUUUGE mental boost. I did that around day 5 or 6. Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App

It very well could be your blood sugar is low. A little milk or yogurt can help when you feel that way. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I had gastric sleeve on Feb 29, 2016, at the age of 50. I followed pre op liquid diet exactly as advised, no cheating. Then followed surgeons recommend diet for next 6 weeks, post op. I have lost 36 pounds. I was advised by my doctor I was not eating enough. My weight has stayed the same for 1 month. Since I have increased my intake to 6 times a day, I have gained weight. Eating my protein first, usually the only thing I eat, full after protein. I drink 50-64 ounces of liquid, mainly water and diet green tea. My blood pressure dropped, so I was taken off medication for blood pressure. Then had swelling half way up my lower legs, was started on diuretic. Still have swelling to my lower legs. I still have not lost weight. My proteins are usually chicken, turkey, eggs or fish. I eat Greek yogurt, nuts, and fruit in between main meals. I'm lost on what I am doing wrong. Doctor said he is sending me to nutritionist when I follow up with him in 2 weeks. Any advice would be much appreciated, I feel like a failure

I was sleeved 5/10. I'm down 21 pounds including the 1 week pre-op diet. SW 250 CW 229. Weight loss has been stalled for about 10 days. Everything has gone very smoothly. I'm still hungry at times though. Anyone else waking up during the night hungry? Per doctors orders I'm drinking 2 Protein shakes a day plus four "meals" a day. The foods allowed right now are Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, 2% cheese and nut butter. I can also have no more than 2oz of oatmeal, grits, mashed potatoes or saltine crackers each day which I try to avoid. I usually get in about 110 grams of protein and about 1000 calories. Seems like a lot but I handle it well. Walking 30 minutes a day. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Well you have come to the right place then. Tons of advice and support on here regardless of your geographical location! Eating too little can actually be counterintuitive and slow your weight loss. Remember that you have to start thinking of this as a lifestyle of new habits and eating - not a "diet". I don't know that I have any great suggestions for food given you have different types of food than we do. I ate things like hummus, soft cheeses, refried Beans, cottage cheese, yogurt, sugar free pudding, etc. in the soft food stage but I struggled with that for a while because I had a stricture (which I didn't discover until the 3rd month) so I had difficulty keeping too much more solid things down until after that. Hopefully some others closer to your part of the world can make some suggestions.

2 months post op sleeve and still can't eat
Rockitwo replied to Rockitwo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am unable to eat most foods. I get very nauseous and sometimes vomit. I can tolerate yogurt usually and an egg. Pureed foods are not tolerated either. I should be drinking shakes but I don't drink enough. -
I still eat Kroger's carbmaster yogurts when I'm craving sweets. I love their cinnamon bun, black forest cake and key lime pie flavors. They use artificial sweeteners to keep them low carb, but other than that they taste great and have 60 calories, 9 grams Protein and like 4 carbs per container. I'd stop eating the candy even if it is sugar free stuff. You're still mentally pushing candy and bad foods as things you want to eat, and you have to start thinking of healthy foods now to replace the crappy cravings. If you can start using other foods (like the yogurt) early on, it will help down the road when you're eating regular foods - you won't automatically think "Oh, I'll eat some candy..." Instead it will be "oh, I want some yogurt"

Sugar Cravings
Read2016 replied to beautifully2114's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@beautyifullu2114... Maybe try some flavored yogurt, many of them have tons of sugar so may take some reading of labels to find one that works... While sugary yogurt isn't ideal, probably better than a cookie... Cookies are a trigger food for me, no way could I ever just have one... Maybe have plain Greek yogurt and add your own fruit or cinnamon or a little vanilla extract ( check the label on that one first)... There something from trader's Joe agave syrup, it's sweet, I don't know the nutritional info. Try to look for natural sweet things rather than artificial processed foods... Pay day - buying staples
LipstickLady replied to becomingmandikaye's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Honestly, if you don't get paid but once a month, don't buy anything past some Gatorade and SF Popsicles. My tastes changed 90% post op and I threw away so much food that I bought in advance. I couldn't tolerate tea, most of the Protein powders, Jello, Carnation Instant Breakfast. Yogurt sucked, Water sucked. EVERYTHING SUCKED. I was driving 48 hours after surgery and I needed to walk so trips to the WalSuck were perfect. I drank a lot of chicken broth, broth based Soups (strained), Gatorade mixed with water. I could eat SF pudding and that was about it, along with my Protein drinks. (Bought 8 different individual kinds until I found two that worked.) I tossed at least $300 worth of food and protein crap because I bought it in advance. Why so much? Not only did my tastes change, but I totally over estimated how much I could eat. A fat mind doesn't even begin to comprehend the limitations of a sleeved tummy for a long time. I am three years out and I still over estimate how much I can eat from time to time. -
@@saphfyre14, As the others said, be sure to eat what your surgeon and nutritionist tell you to eat. If they haven’t told you anything yet, ask them. They should be able to give you as much information as you want. That said, your diet will probably have a lot of healthy foods and not many unhealthy ones! You will not be able to eat much volume at first, so you will need to start with the Protein foods at each meal and snack (if your surgeon and nutritionist tell you to include snacks). That might include eggs, chicken, tuna, beef, turkey, Beans, cottage cheese, yogurt, cheese, and other lean and nutritious sources of protein. You might not be able to tolerate all of those foods at first; you’ll have to see how it goes. Eventually, you can also add peanuts and nuts, but those can take longer. Vegetables come next to your meals and Snacks, since veggies are low calorie and filling. You’ll eat cooked ones first since they’re easier to tolerate. Examples include cooked carrots and green beans. It’ll probably take you a really long time to be able to eat salad. Other healthy foods to include will probably be fruit, whole grains like oatmeal, and starchy vegetables like sweet potatoes in small servings. And what won’t you be eating? Well, probably anything that’s high-calorie and low-nutrient: think sugary, processed, fatty, fried, and starchy foods. Cake, white Pasta, pizza, chips, fried chicken, and ice cream are a few examples. Alcohol is also forbidden. Many sleeve patients are able to tolerate almost everything, although you might have trouble with certain foods. Some patients include small amounts of junk food because they know they can satisfy their cravings and stay in control, while others avoid all trigger foods. Hope that gives you some idea!
