I am so sorry you are going through all of this. In addition to talking in detail with your surgeon I would suggest your mental health professional too. When starting out I was told that the band is a tool that can really help you lose weight but it is not a magic bullet. In order to feel well and be successful you must follow the rules. One is no drinking with meals. This was very hard for me too but it is a must. If really necessary just take a sip. You could be feeling sick because you are eating and drinking too much. I have dry heaved twice since being banded. One time was after the gym when I downed a bottle of water in minutes. Finally after an hour I dry heaved. It took a couple of hours to feel better. The second time was when I went out for dinner. I know I ate too much and did not chew well ( and yes that is a very important rule, chew chew chew and than chew some more !) I felt terrible for hours. Please try weaning yourself off the sweet tea. Calories do count. Perhaps you could cut back and dilute it little by little. I was very addicted to diet soda and had to give it up cold turkey because of the carbonation. Now I don't miss it. In fact the other day I took a few sips and didn't like it. I drink water with lemon and Ice tea with sweetnlow. Also remember your protein. Eat your protein first. It helps you feel fuller longer. I wish you good luck and hope you feel better soon.

It depends on how much u have to lose. If under 100 pounds I'd do the sleeve if over I'd go with bypass. I had bypass and it's been very helpful in reaching my goals. If you're child bearing age and plan to have a child I'd do a sleeve. I find sleeve you lose quickly but it's much easier to gain back as it doesn't appear to change your blood sugar levels like RNY gastric bypass. If you're diabetic do the RNY. There are many variables. Best to discuss with your surgeon. I initially wanted the sleeve but my surgeon said you're very big so better to do the bypass. I've reached a healthy bmi and feel amazing but I take my vitamins and have my protein daily.

Newbie Bmi Less Than 35 With Diabetes And Host Of Other Conditions
Jean McMillan replied to ren0318's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My starting BMI was 39.5, but I want to tell you that recently the FDA approved the Lap-Band for patients with BMI's of 30+. Approval of surgery for you will depend on your particular insurance policy, so why don't you give them a call and find out what your weight loss surgery coverage is and what, if anything, you'll have to do to qualify. Some policies require the patient to do a 6-month medically supervised weight loss diet, for example. Good luck! Jean -
:nervous I attended my first WLS support group meeting last night at the Medical Center where I'll be having my surgery. All but one of the people who stood up to give their testimonials were RNY people. One lady, whom I had met at a seminar in Sept. '06 was there. She came over to tell me all about her surgery, which was 11/29/06, and her weight loss--over 80 lbs. so far!!! I got a little envious, and even started wondering if RNY would be better--they seem to lose weight so fast. This is ridiculous, I've been researching and considering lap band for over 3 years! Does anybody else get these doubts? I guess when I think about it, the whole reason I felt lap band was better for me all along was that the weight loss seems to be a little slower, and it seems that there are less complications. Plus, the mal-absorptive feature of RNY is sort of counter-intuitive in my mind (for me). I would never deign to tell somebody else what is right for them, but lap band always seemed right for me....still....that envy sure did creep up on me. Thanks, Carol Insurance approved 4/17/07, waiting on a surgery date--should be in May

How is it my body fat % has increased????
CBL replied to sychadelic's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have had one for years... and it gives different results every time I weigh in. I wouldn't get too excited. Water weight sounds low to me... if I am above 45% on the scale, I have clear pee. If I get too far below that, I start yellowing up and feeling dehydrated. Just my experience though. -
I didn't get to ride my bike today....yet. I might try to get it in after hubby goes to bed. I still don't like exercising in front of him. It was a pretty good day. I'm pretty used to not eating much now. In some ways I can see how being on this pre-op diet can be beneficial. Not just because of the weight loss but that when I am banded I'm already used to not eating hardly anything. Here's what I had today: (typical of everyday) whey protein shake 2scoops in 8oz slim milk 2 slimfast shakes (I'm allowed 3 a day but lately have only been drinking 2) 1 1/2 cups broccoli 1 cup butternut squash soup (90 cals) 1 1/2 cups stir fry veggies 1 diet Dr. Pepper That's around 1200 cals. And I'm really not hungry. The first few days of this pre-op diet I ate like three times as many veggies but not anymore. I'm actually not supposed to have soup but I've been eating progresso's hearty tomato and tried this organic squash soup. The squash soup is pretty nasty. I like squash. I've eaten a lot of it the past two weeks but the soup just wasn't right. It smelled like pumpkin pie and tasted like onion, garlic squash. It messed with my senses. I am so ready for my surgery date. Not much longer. I am on the downhill side now at least. Well, Goodnight. Hope everyone is doing good on their journeys!

NEW -- excited & impatient!!
grannyk replied to Epiphany's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Greetings, Epiphany!! I was scheduled to have the sleeve just about 6 weeks after my daughter did last summer because my cardiologist told me I had to lose weight because eventually I would have to get total knee replacements and no surgeon would do them at my weight. Well, I took a terrible fall and had to have my right knee done anyway because I could barely walk. So they will do it if you are injured...hahaha So I recovered from that quite nicely and then had the sleeve done in April, 2011. Sleeve, then knee is probably the best, but oh well...they are both done and I am on the way to better times. Keep us posted on your progress...Kathe -
Hello -- I've just discovered this site & am looking forward to hearing more @ your experiences! I'm new to the whole idea of WLS, and especially VSG -- but after much research & upon the advice of my Doctor, believe whole-heartedly that this is the best option for me. I was told 4 weeks ago that I needed total knee replacement surgery (we thought that I'd just been dealing with a knee injury that wasn't healing...!) -- and that my doctor wouldn't perform knee replacement until I'd lost a significant amount of weight. Knee doctor referred me to Dr. Ramiro "Sonny" Cavazos @ The Texas Center for Medical & Surgical Weight Loss. Had my first appointment with him + Nutritionist & Behavioral Health on 5/26/11 & am now doing 3 months of medically supervised weight loss as per my insurance company (already down 23 lbs!) & impatiently hoping to have a surgery date the end of August / beginning of September 2011. Motivated & very excited! Highest weight : 328 May 2011 Current weight: 303 Goal: 150-ish

I had my VSG on 11/19. I lost a good bit of weight for the first 4 weeks or so, but have basically been at the same weight for the last 2.5 weeks. I am eating about 1100 calories per day, getting in 64+ oz of water and hitting my 80+ grams of protein daily. I go to the gym 3 times a week.

Ok, so I was banded 10/21 and I have had success. I've lost 62 pounds. But over the last few weeks I've just stayed at my current weight. I work out 3-5 days a week. I've even changed up the routine but no change. Anyone else experience this? This must be a plateau but it is sooooooooo frustrating!!

I saw her on The Insider...and she really lost the weight, wow. I wasn't a fan on Celebrity Apprentice but she acted so happy and said her husband got surgery also. She looked good, with a sassy new hairdo and really skinny face.

I had gastric bypass whereas you had the sleeve. I dropped weight so quickly that it was like jumping off a cliff. But then at around 7 months, my weight loss stopped and I went into the maintenance phase. Sleeve patients lose weight at a much slower pace. They encounter many stalls along the way. But their journey is much longer. And they can achieve almost the same weight loss as gastric bypass patients. Many do not transition into the maintenance phase until 2 years.

i think kiz is right, it depends on what foods you are eating, i guess i am very lucky cos ive tried most foods & i struggle sometimes to eat my next meal as i am still full from my last, ive tried chewing less but it doesnt sit comfortable with me, so i guess i must be doing something right for myself with the weight coming off

So my SO is totally supportive and has been really excited for me but now that surgery is getting close, he keeps making comments about when I'm skinny and different sly things about how I will prob leave. My surgery is really high risk. I know he's scared to death and now I think he's starting to question us. He doesn't have a weight issue and works in the entertainment industry. He's never had a problem with confidence and is the life of the party. Anyone have any tips? Do I just ignore it? Reassure him? Let him act like a whiney baby?[emoji38] Why are they so complicated ?! need to loose 20lbs before surgery
aliekat55 replied to mel959's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I find that increasing my activity helps tremendously with both the weight but the hunger. I am limited in what my joints can do but i find things I can do and get my body working for me rather than against me. -
need to loose 20lbs before surgery
mel959 replied to mel959's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Craving getting better. I went to a bbq had a cheese burger without bun and grilled asparagus. It satisfied. I lost total of 15lbs with still 2 months to go. I'm scared that ill start gaining if I let myself relax too much. Would like to loose 15 more in next 2 months to get under preop goal and show myself I can do this lifestyle change even postop -
Have been noticing a strong scent down there postop. When i sit down to pee it smells mediciny and right after I shower there's still a strong scent but not unpleasant. I haven't lost enough weight to get a thigh gap or anything so wondering what's causing this and if anyone else experienced a change in scent postop.

I had my sleeve surgery on 3/25/15. Going on vacation and having a good time was one of the catalysts for deciding to have surgery. Well I got back from a week's vacation and probably had the best vacation ever. I spent a week at Disney World with one day at Universal. I sat in the middle seat on the airplane and rode ALL of the rides. No problem at all! I felt like a normal sized person. In fact, I was sad to see so many obese people in scooters. I was thinking how are they having a good time? I did not make the best food choices and when I got back was pleased that I hadn't gained any weight. But I was also happy to get back to my "normal" food routine. However, I lost 9 pounds the week after. I think I must have been retaining Water in my ankles. I had two broken ankles two years ago from a car accident and sometimes have cankles now when I walk a lot. : ( Anyone on the fence about the surgery, DO IT!! Prior to losing the weight, I always had crappy vacations. Not anymore! Total weight loss so far: 140

Maybe try using a Fitbit or similar device. I was fortunate in that I had remained pretty active despite having gained a lot of weight before surgery, so the first year or so I really didn't need motivation because I liked working out. After I had two plastics surgeries though over the course of 3 months, I couldn't work out for 6 weeks after each one and oddly enough I lost weight (which was probably partly muscle). I found that I can easily maintain and still lose a few pounds a month without any form of exercise so I got super lazy. I would still go to boxing class, but before I was running miles everyday. As of this week I decided it's time I get my lazy butt back in gear, so I bought both the Fitbit Charge and the Aria scale to serve as a motivator. The scale is a pound heavier than my regular scale so that was annoying, lol, but the Charge has been fun to have because I can see my progress so much better. I find it motivating to work toward goals and if you set your goal at 10,000 a day you can see throughout the day how close you are.

Compliments From The Father-In-Law
LorenaVaca posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went and saw my FIL today (first time since surgery) and as soon as i walked up to him he said hola and right after said in spanish wow Te vez mas flaca meaning wow you look skinnier...lol it felt good but it was so hard for me to take it as a compliment rather then take it offensively. He of course asked if it was from being sick and if im better now? The thing is my mother in law knows all about my surgery because she is like my best friend so i of course told her (shes lives in Mexico while my father in law lives here to work and support the family) but my FIL does not really know exactly everything about my surgery i assume by him asking if im better and not sick anymore that my MIL told him i was sick and had surgery. In the end feels good to know that whatever lil weight ive lost since Aug 7th is visible at that by someone who i hardly since and didnt really realize how much he paid attention to me...
