    Non carbonated drinks?

what does your program say about alcohol.
  2. I've always been told to leave the surgi- strips on until they fall off. After removing staples, a lot of times they'll use surgi-strips. Vitamin E oil will help with scarring and itching. Penni, are you overcleaning it? I did that w/ a previous surgery. I was cleaning it w/ betadine several times. I really thought I was taking care of my wound. But it made some of the surface skin peel away. Peroxide and/or alcohol is very drying, too. Leatha, your dr. may have used a nail gun! He may have gotten a better deal on it. But did he use stainless? You know, health care is having to make cuts! We had some missionary friends that would collect and take medical supplies when they went to Russia. She said Russian sutures are thick and coarse, just like dental floss. Ouch!

    Beer

Thanks for the great info! I'm sure gonna miss pumpkin beer with a cinnamon sugar rim this fall-- but next fall I'm throwing my own back yard Octoberfest- wearing my boots 'n jeans! (miss wearing jeans the most!) The alcohol will have to wait. What's up with a little weed? (ooops?). I like to indulge from time 2 time - I'm not a druggie, just like the mj. 

    Drinking Sodas with sleeve?

I was really dreading not having Diet Coke after surgery. And 9 days out, while there are lots of things I miss and crave, bizarrely Diet Coke isn't one of them. I'm drinking Water and diet squash, and while water doesn't taste good to me at the moment, the squash does and I have no real desire for Diet Coke. However, I do know that I want to be able to live a normal life, and sometimes that might mean having a Diet Coke on an evening out. In particular, I don't want to give up alcohol completely (I'm not a heavy or even a regular drinker, but I do want to be able to have a drink with friends every so often, even if they are empty calories), so that might mean I occassionally want a wine spritzer or carbonated cider or gin and (carbonated) tonic. I hope that I will be able to tolerate these since I know they will not be regular features of my diet, and I had this sleeve so I could live normally and still enjoy things in moderation.

    All of a sudden...everyone is *#%* expert!

I got that from my coworkers and in the beginning they all said they'd support me. One coworker even tempted me with chocolate. I asked her if I was an alcoholic would she tempt me with booze. Same concept in my book. Another coworker told me since I'm losing weight for surgery why spend all that money when "you can do it on your own" my thought was, hello dumbass, if I could do it on my own,why am I not doing it already. SMH. I have yet to tell my dad or my twin sister who by the way if half my size or smaller. Some days I can't win to lose. Some people are just dumb. Keep your head up.

    need encouragement

I have seen it, a long time ago. Very scary and eerie but then I went out and smoked and the gross feeling just passed me by. Ummmmm, Penni. Still fighting the good fight! I didn't smoke the whole time in Mexico (4 days) but stress levels pushed me over the edge and I snuck one when I got home. I never ever have more than 3-4 a day though. I am still trying. I need to get more Patches next time I go to Mexico. The patch works I just hate putting it on because of the gross "scum" it leaves from the sticky stuff. It is soooo hard to get off and I scrub my skin raw with alcohol trying to get it off! But I will NOTTTTT give up the fight! i am going to try again and again every day! Thanks for asking!

    Am I Wrong? :/

Actually, I didn't read the study wrong. Per the study: "a relative increase of more than 50 percent compared to pre-surgical rates." Ten percent is roughly 50 percent greater than 7 percent. Also, the study defines alcohol use disorder as alcoholism. Yes, the study involved RNY and lap band participants. However, several factors tie it to sleeve patients. The study authors and other doctors suggested that the reasons WLS patients may turn to alcohol could be that they are tired of strict rules about what they eat and drink or that they may develop new social lives that include drinking after losing large amounts of weight. Another reason suggested is that extremely obese people lose some of their tolerance for alcohol consumption when they lose weight. Every one of these potential causes is the same for the sleeve as they are for RNY. Not one of the suggested reasons is related to the difference in surgical procedures for RNY vs. sleeve. The important thing is that we all be aware of these results so that we have information to consider it we choose to.
  8. @@ML573663, You’re getting some good news on this thread. Yes, it is possible to lose over 100 pounds your first year after getting the sleeve! It does not happen to everyone, but it can happen to you if things fall into place. First, you need surgery to go well. You can get a good start by choosing a good surgeon and by following all of the pre-op instructions you are given and losing whatever weight you can before surgery. That helps surgery be safer, so you have a lower chance of complications, and it helps you have fewer side effects, so you can get focused on losing weight after surgery as soon as possible. The main factor in how much you lose in the first year is…you. You will lose a lot more if you follow all your post-op diet instructions as you progress to the solid foods diet. If you rush the liquid and pureed stages or you do not get enough Protein or fluids, you’re more likely to have complications or to have trouble transitioning to solid foods. After you get to solid foods, you can lose a lot more if you follow the diet instructions, including what to eat and how much to eat. You can also help yourself out by exercising. If you are one of those patients who is just itching to “progress” back to whatever got you into trouble in the first place, such as drinking alcohol or eating brownies or wings, you will probably not lose weight as fast. Good luck!
  9. I'm just curious about everyone's drinking habits with the band, and if it affects anything? Xx

Wondering when I can drink alcohol

I'm pretty sure you know what the answer is going to be.... Not being judgey at all, but you're 9 days out and want to drink alcohol? It's going to be ages before that desire gets entertained by anyone. Professional or not. Alcoholic beverages are nothing but empty calories and I'm not sure if you've had the sleeve or bypass but drinking that stuff can make you sick or give you stomach ulcers. You're fresh out of the hospital. Don't do it. Avoid alcohol like it's the plague for the next year or so. If it's something you really must know, then heed the previous person's advice and ask your surgeon. But I vote... Don't do it. Hw-273 Sw-226 CW-135 GW-130 Size- 4 or 6, Small in sweats. Wondering when I can drink alcohol

I have yet to figure out why people are so rude sometimes. I have read many posts about alcohol on this forum and they all have rude comments so don’t feel too bad. Use the search bar to find the other posts and you will see others have commented about having alcohol very soon after surgery and being fine. My surgeon said something about 6 weeks but I have been tempted. I’m 4 1/2 weeks post op. I have read that it is easier to become a binge drinker after surgery and some do actually become alcoholics so just take it slow.

Fear of changing relationship with best friend

Ultimately, I think it's like an alcoholic with drinking buddies. You need to find other ways to spend time together that don't involve eating....or the relationship will get toxic. Or you have to 100% cool with each other's eating habits....which is also harder than it seems. Weirdly...my mom and I really struggle with this one. So many of our visits revolved around getting a meal out together, or cooking together. It's been sort of awkward to find different ways to enjoy time together. We're getting there....this week be bought and planted flowers. We've been playing cards and drinking tea, instead of soda, chips and dip. But yeah....a HUGE part of my relationship with my mom has a ton of eating activities attached that are really tough for me cause she doesn't struggle with her weight like I do. Mom activies of the past: Let's go get a donut. Let's make cookies. Let's make bread. Let's go grocery shopping and get fast food. Let's go to a new restaurant. Let's got get ice cream. Can you detect a pattern? LOLOLOL When I was a kid, every Friday was "Celebration junk food night". We'd get KFC (or pizza, or burgers), tabloid magazines, rent videos, and buy ice cream or candy to have with the movie. And scratchable lotto tickets. Two liters of cola. LOL. It was a celebration of God-awful choices....and You know what's messed up? I remember it really fondly. And if there's a day I'm gonna cheat....you can bet it will be on Friday. I remember about two months post-surgery...we went to a movie with my mom and she ducked out and came back with sodas and candy and popcorn! I'm like...Mom...I can't have this stuff......and the look on her face was so sad. It's like I'm taking away her enjoyment by not sharing her habits. I am rejecting her traditions!!!! Ultimately...she was totally on board with me not eating the snacks and she was sort of horrified she got them for me..... but I think she genuinely forgot, and it just felt disappointing to her not to "give me a treat" or revisit that tradition that reminds of of happy memories. My mother expresses love in fat, salt and sugar. LOL. Seriously. So yeah...it's been hard. Relationship changes are tough. Changing your activities so you're not always eating together....can be disarmingly tough.
  13. I was lucky to absolutely love the representative I worked for. I agreed with his politics 100% and it was an exciting office to work in. However at the Court Clerk level, I knew that my boss was an alcoholic and that the office was actually run by a couple of his key employees, who were not the most ethical people I'd ever met. I've heard people say that it doesn't matter that much who is president. But I couldn't disagree more. You can track our economy and the country's progress as it relates to education, environment, banking and other very specific things like international affairs by just looking at who was president and which party dominated Congress. I know you may be a Republican and this may sound offensive to you, but one of the reasons that I believe that more people than usual seem to be interested in the elections this time is because for at least 4 years we had a very conservative Republican President and a Republican dominated Congress and the decisions that they made have sent our country in a direction that has been very good for the wealthy folks and large corporations, while the problems for many Americans have become much worse. We need checks and balances and that makes it vitally important for us at the state level to know exactly who our representatives in Congress are. The president can't do much without congressional support, but if he has the majority support, we can be steered in a direction that is not in the best interests of the country as a whole. So the bottom line is that not only do we need to get out and vote, but we need to make darned sure we know who the candidates are. A few sound bytes heard on the evening news or in biased political ads just don't tell the full story. I am sure you find it conflicting to work for someone who you have overheard playing politics in a less than honest way. It may be disgusting but I do think that it is pretty common for our elected officials to talk out of both sides of their mouths.

    Alcoholic Drinks

I waited 5 months to have a drink and when i did I had vodka! I drank shots and followed it with crystal light I may have gone over board a tad.... but it was my birthday I had fun HOWEVER... the next three days I felt hung over and I felt guilty for drinking because all I could think about was carbs carbs sugar and hurting my liver and my spouse said I was trying to shove food in my mouth... I never want to be fat again so I decided alcohol is not for me I use to drink a lot in college and I am just worried about waking up that LiL monster and ruining all that I have worked hard for!

    Sweet Tooth

Thanks for pointing those out! The use isomalto-oligosaccharide instead of soluble corn fiber, so I might be able to handle them and the nutritional info looks good. Only slight red flag is the amount of sugar alcohol, but I think I'd be willing to give them a try. Do you know any brick-and-mortar stores that sell them? I just googled them - looks like Vitamin Shoppe carries them. I may swing by today and pick one up! Yes, I got ones at Vitamin Shoppe to try. Mine only had 2 flavors. Online they come in a lot more though.

  17. i worked with a guy who used to take antibuse. it seemed to me that he loved taking it and being real strict. not using after shave or mouth wash or anything with the slightest bit of alcohol in it. to prove to himself that he could do it and not drink. but then i think the biggest charge he got was when he would stop taking it, and count down to the minute he could start drinking, then crack open a beer. he is sober now, but with the help of aa.

    July Surgeries

I agree with the excersize issues....you're right. As kids, and younger adults even, we would hit the baseball/basketball/hockey surfaces without giving thought to stretching or warming up....BUT, our bodies were younger, and did not require the same tuning up as they do now...also, it's been a long time since we've excersized at this level, so there may be SOME logic behind SOME of the things we're being advised to do in prep for a workout HOWEVER, excersize should be fun, and varied. That's what keeps us interested and motivated. I have NEVER worked out in a gym in my life, ever! Tomorrow, I start with my first session (12 booked) with a personal trainer. I need to learn "how" to excersize, and "how" to use the equipement ect. After those 12 sessions are done, I'm going to be on my own, and making my own program with some help....I'M TERRIFIED of this part of my journey, but I know I need to burn fat, build lean muscle, and increase my cardio....It's just.....scary. I've seen the results from RyansGirl (on this form) and she has ROCKED the gym...and the results are hard to ignore. I want some of that!!! Cheri, I'm SOOOOOO GLAD to hear your stall has broken. It's such a relief eh? You know, one thing I've noticed (perhaps it's THE secret) is that when I up my calories, I loose more weight in the following week. Typically, I'm using VODKA, with Chrystal Lite (no cals) and on a Saturday night, will have 2 of these over the course of the evening. Then, like magic, the next 2 days, I'm down 3 pounds. Last Saturday, I repeated these 2 drinks, and today, I'm already down 4 pounds. Mind you, I'm having a hard time getting up to 600 calories without the vodka, but with the Vodka on the Saturday night, I clock in at about 750 calories (on this one day alone) and it seems to send the messege to my body to say "okay, we have calories, you can burn some fat". Weird eh? Oh well, I'm not advocating alcohol, but hey, it's working, FOR ME. I'm so glad to see everyone is doing well, and are pleased with their sleeve. I'm VERY, VERY happy!! And seeing big time results in the measurements!!! Be well!

    The Only Thing I Found

Thanks, and sorry I have been AWOL so long. I had my surgery May 13th -- all has gone well, and I'm down 21 pounds since day of surgery. This site was crashing my computer for some reason -- the problem seems to have gone away -- but that is why I've been offline here. I agree there are a lot of weight issues in the lesbian community. I think we struggle against the heteronormative ideal of female beauty (can you tell I came out in the early 80's in a lesbian-feminist community? ). But, we also have a lot of alcohol, emotional issues with our bio families, and all sorts of other issues. Anyway, I will try to stay more regular here, assuming the website works for me .

    Alcohol

Alcohol is fine by my nutritionist and surgeon but of course in moderation.

I know it's a big no no.. but does anyone have any cocktail recipes that are tolerable?

    January 2013 Bandsters!

I just had 2.7oz of whiskey last night, watered down. It was my first time with alcohol in months, and I was excited to have some! I tracked it and had the allowance for the calories at the end of the day. I will say, though, it really took down my inhibitions and I wanted to SNACK! Luckily, I just ate some raw mushrooms and salsa (I know, it WAS kind of gross) because I didn't have many more calories left. I almost gave in and ate animal crackers and pretzels. I probably won't drink again until there is a special occasion. Oh, also my surgery was on Jan 18th, I'm 3 weeks out.
  24. I DVR'd the show Intervention the other night and just finished watching it. It was about a young girl addicted to heroin. Now some of you may know, I'm divorced 2 yrs this month, I literally watched my ex become an alcoholic the last 3 yrs of our marriage and I thought "how dare you do this to us". I didn't want the divorce, he did, in the end because I wouldn't go out partying with him, said we never did anything together and we had grown apart, well he had met someone too. Anyway, getting back to the Intervention, I never understood how anyone could be addicted to drugs or alcohol and do that to themselves and to their family members but tonight I looked at my mom and said "you know I no different, I'm addicted to food, always have been". Thus the reason for my surgery a year ago this week. I make better food choices now, yes its hard and a daily struggle with me with head hunger and sweets and sometimes I give in but I'm no different so I have no right to criticize anyone's addiction not even my ex's. Which by the way I saw my ex today, he always forgets to mail my alimony ck so I had to meet up with him, he looked awful. For someone that used to hold a corporate job and have a company car and make six figures now looks like he does is sad and breaks my heart, I feel sympathy for him. All I can do is pray not only for him but for myself with my head hunger in which I struggle with each and every day.

    The Maintenance Thread

Gosh one of the things this journey has taught me with regards to food and indulgences is that I DO have the power to choose and to change the game up. I do remember having those guilty feelings of failure and depression following a feast weekend. I would literally shove food down my gob every second I could! And food is using the term loosely. By food, I mean crap! LOL.Delicious. Carby. Fatty. Crunchy. Gooey. Pasta-y. Ricey. Crap. LOL. Hello, Tortillas y Tamales. Ola Enchiladas Chicas. LOL. Then the next week following it, I wouldn't even be able to make myself get on the scale, much less get back into an exercise and eating routine. Now following 2 days of eating heavy meals (not snacking on crap, just taking in double or triple my normal calories + limited alcohol), and up to 135 (pre-poopy LOL) and yesterday I sprang right back into the program. Got on the scale. Posted publicly to you guys about my plate and my weight and walked an hour both yesterday and today. This morning I'm down to 133lbs (post-poopy LOL) and I feel like it was only a temporary blip--not a backslide into the old ways. I will admit, I had anxiety and crankiness being at the top of my weight window. Kinda like the female cat in Pepe Le Peuw cartoons, trying to pry/crawl her way out of his smelly embrace. That was me trying to escape the reality of the scale yesterday morning--even knowing most of that was water weight. LOL. But this journey and my tool reassure me that regain will only happen with MY HELP. I have to aide and abet for it to happen (barring some medical catastrophe).
