  1. I am currently 415 pounds 27 years old and a mother of 2 beautiful kids. I have finally made a choice to lose weight. I have tried everything in the book from weight watchers to b12 shots and calorie counting...but i am at the point where i cant stick with my diet and i cheat on my diet alot of times. i made an appt with Dr. Lidor at John Hopkins University for 4/27. Anyone already go through surgery? All these videos on youtube are freaking me out!! Someone HELP!!!!!
  2. ok so i start mushies/pureed on friday (wish i could start it sooner) what i plan on having is scrabled egg for breakfast, sweet potato for lunch, and "pretend lazagna" for dinner. but i dont know what to have the next 2 weeks after that, so i can basically puree anything? vegetables? fruit? what should i avoid the most? thanks! i cant wait til i start this stage! oh, i went to the follow up today and it was his operating day so i didnt get to see him, i see him on wednesday next week, but when i got weighed it said i was 211! i GAINED 4 pounds, how?! is it cause i got my time of month or is it cause im actually having my full liquids or what??!
  3. I'm getting my surgery date on Thursday and I'm keen to go and very excited! However, I have one last lingering concern. What is the difference with dealing with food addiction with or without the band? Its seems that everyone is still suffering trying to not eat the wrong foods or bypassing the band or not having enough "will power" and I just wonder how is that different to what we go through on a standard diet without a band? The band then just adds its own issues eg: surgery issues, reflux, pain, financial costs, food sensitivities and sometimes, god forbid, food cravings??!?!??!? Do I really need the added aggravation? I worry that one day down the track I will be in exactly the same position as I'm in now - not being able to control myself around food - thats the only thing I want to be rid of. The weight loss is kind of secondary (kind of) my main concern is getting rid of this obsessive food addiction. Does the band really help keep us under control? Are we just replacing one obsession for another? To go from food to fills? Love to hear from anyone with any advice good, bad or otherwise.

    Only one more time

Good luck with your flight! I am not a flyer myself, I flew this past August (3rd time in my life)...I always find religion on an airplane (God and I get really tight from takeoff to landing). Shortgal had a great idea - ask the flight attendent for the extention before you sit down. I asked after the fact - seeing I'd gained about 70 pounds since I flew 10 years ago and literally yelled it out...and the deaf woman couldn't hear me. The lady next to me even shouted it. I was completely mortified - it was not a good experience for me. I wish I'd had pre-planned better. I hope you enjoy the trip and visit with your grandson.

    Only one more time

i know this is terrible but i dont even try the seatbelt anymore for fear that it wont fit. i have gained ALOT of weight since i entered college and this past time flying home i really began to see how big i had gotten. i just put my purse on my lap (which i know it TERRIBLE) and always sit in the aisle. i also fly southwest so when i see people looking at me when finally the c people get to board i can tell they are all happy that they do not have to sit next to the big fatty with the purse on her lap.
  7. I'm totally with you on this one. Getting banded was my first surgery EVER! I wasn't nervous at all though. My husband got banded 2 weeks after me and he's had surgery before and our recoveries were night and day. Apparently they had to give me more anesthetic so I had a hard time waking up from surgery. My recovery was longer than my husbands who (against everyones advice) got up and went to work the next day. I rested a lot for about 2 weeks. But now, about 5 weeks out I feel great and my weight loss is going well. This is the best decision I've ever made in my life. I just wish I would have done it sooner! Good luck to you on your journey!

    17 Months Out Progress

I keep losing. It is a lot slower now, and I have periodic maintenance periods, but still lose about .5 lbs a week. I really don't want to lose much more. I'm 2lbs from goal and have loose skin. At this point, my concern is that if I continue the pattern that has been playing out over the last many months, I will be losing too much weight. I've seen people on the forums fuss about this as if they are doing an eye roll that it isn't a real problem or that the solution is just to eat more. Just like when someone says, "If you are fat, eat less and exercise more. You don't need surgery." ...they are over simplifying a complex problem and don't really understand. I eat lots of junk. I eat Desserts and bread. I drink beer. I eat and drink anything and everything I want. But, believe it or not, I'm still losing and it has not stopped. I may sustain a weight range for a month, but then it drops. No, I don't exercise at all. This may not be the norm, but is a legitimate concern and a reality for some here.
  9. Me too! I am down 30 pounds and take in about 800 calories a day and have been very carfefuk not to eat carbs and my weightloss has stalled Up a pound down a pound, I have 56 pounds to go. Help! Am I doing something wrong. I find it hard to believe that 800 calories is enough to sustain my weight. My clothes fit well but I am dying to get to my 150 goal. Any advice?
  10. Hey all, I have my 6 week follow up tomorrow and I went down some weight but gained weight back. I'm not doing anything I shouldn't be and am pretty nervous with some weight gain. What is the typical weight loss at the 6 week mark? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  11. I have been banded for just about 1 year. I have had 2 fills and throw up about 2 or 3 times a week. All of this would be okay with me if I were loosing weight. I've lost 25 pounds altogether, including what I lost before surgery. I really thought this would be the answer for me. I've failed at every other diet I've ever tried and I'm a failure at this too. I'm sad.

    Food dictates my life

It is sad how food dictates my life. Whether I am happy, sad, mad, or angry I always resort to food. People who have real high metabolisms don’t seem to understand why I’m so fat. I eat as much as they do or even less and I gain the weight more than they would. I haven't had my surgery yet but just trying to leave a little on my plate is getting easier. I have even been doing portion control and leaving a bite or two. It feels good when my stomach signals to my brain that I have had enough to eat and it’s time to put the plate away. And then I start to wonder what if I can do this w/o the surgery? I’m losing weight by eating less and feeling content with such small amounts. But, then it hits me. I’ve been on this trail before. I have lost weight by portion control alone, and I felt great and had the momentum going like a train, and then one day I derail off the tracks. I’ve had a bad day at work or something to that effect and all of a sudden I want to eat!!! I want the carbs, sweet and salty and the whole nine yards. So I start stuffing my mouth and stomach with satisfying mood food to the point of no return. And when the dust clears I feel so stuffed and miserable, regretting ever taking the first bite. Other times after work or on days I am off, I am bored and have nothing to do, there’s nothing good on TV, I don’t feel like going anywhere, so I sit and eat a bag of chips or cookies and milk. That seemed to have passed some time away. Eating those so-called foods while not being active is what has packed on my pounds over the years. That pretty much is who I am before I started this journey to the weight-loss surgery. After many months of thinking about it and researching along the way, I have decided that this is what I will do. I have seen a couple of people that I know have success with it and so here I am. I feel it will be a great tool to help me in those times of boredom. I will have to diligently follow a nutrition program that cannot just throw my arms in the air and give up. I look at it as a strong way to keep me on the straight and narrow. As if I’m in jail and can only eat what is given to me. I am so ready for this surgery on the 25th of September, exactly one month from now. I still have to do my pre-op blood work, chest x-ray, EKG, and my endoscopy. Get my PCP to sign off and hope that the money we are expecting on the day of my pre-op doctor visit will be in the bank as I have to pay them for the program fee. When all that is complete I will be ready for the next chapter of my life.
  13. Good luck!! I am nervous too as it's my turn on the 20th! I am sure both our surgeries and weight loss that follows will be a great success! ????
  14. Okay I can't figure out how to get my glitter signature and my weight tracher BOTH in my Siggy!! Any help would be appreciated.

    Tired of feeling sick!!!

I am so sorry you are going through all of this. In addition to talking in detail with your surgeon I would suggest your mental health professional too. When starting out I was told that the band is a tool that can really help you lose weight but it is not a magic bullet. In order to feel well and be successful you must follow the rules. One is no drinking with meals. This was very hard for me too but it is a must. If really necessary just take a sip. You could be feeling sick because you are eating and drinking too much. I have dry heaved twice since being banded. One time was after the gym when I downed a bottle of water in minutes. Finally after an hour I dry heaved. It took a couple of hours to feel better. The second time was when I went out for dinner. I know I ate too much and did not chew well ( and yes that is a very important rule, chew chew chew and than chew some more !) I felt terrible for hours. Please try weaning yourself off the sweet tea. Calories do count. Perhaps you could cut back and dilute it little by little. I was very addicted to diet soda and had to give it up cold turkey because of the carbonation. Now I don't miss it. In fact the other day I took a few sips and didn't like it. I drink water with lemon and Ice tea with sweetnlow. Also remember your protein. Eat your protein first. It helps you feel fuller longer. I wish you good luck and hope you feel better soon.
  16. I just relocated to AZ and wanted to know if there is anyone here to help support me with this new journey. I'm almost 4 months post-opt and struggle with exercise and protein and fluids????. I wish there was more time in the day so I could get it all in, I find myself having to choose between eating or drinking cause you can't do both????. I need a friend/ support buddy to help me be successful????.In addition I'm looking for a program so I could do my six month visit does anyone have suggestions? I'm so worried I will gain the weight back???? PLEASE HELP ME????????

    Sleeve or Bypass

It depends on how much u have to lose. If under 100 pounds I'd do the sleeve if over I'd go with bypass. I had bypass and it's been very helpful in reaching my goals. If you're child bearing age and plan to have a child I'd do a sleeve. I find sleeve you lose quickly but it's much easier to gain back as it doesn't appear to change your blood sugar levels like RNY gastric bypass. If you're diabetic do the RNY. There are many variables. Best to discuss with your surgeon. I initially wanted the sleeve but my surgeon said you're very big so better to do the bypass. I've reached a healthy bmi and feel amazing but I take my vitamins and have my protein daily.
  18. My starting BMI was 39.5, but I want to tell you that recently the FDA approved the Lap-Band for patients with BMI's of 30+. Approval of surgery for you will depend on your particular insurance policy, so why don't you give them a call and find out what your weight loss surgery coverage is and what, if anything, you'll have to do to qualify. Some policies require the patient to do a 6-month medically supervised weight loss diet, for example. Good luck! Jean

    Surgery Envy?

:nervous I attended my first WLS support group meeting last night at the Medical Center where I'll be having my surgery. All but one of the people who stood up to give their testimonials were RNY people. One lady, whom I had met at a seminar in Sept. '06 was there. She came over to tell me all about her surgery, which was 11/29/06, and her weight loss--over 80 lbs. so far!!! I got a little envious, and even started wondering if RNY would be better--they seem to lose weight so fast. This is ridiculous, I've been researching and considering lap band for over 3 years! Does anybody else get these doubts? I guess when I think about it, the whole reason I felt lap band was better for me all along was that the weight loss seems to be a little slower, and it seems that there are less complications. Plus, the mal-absorptive feature of RNY is sort of counter-intuitive in my mind (for me). I would never deign to tell somebody else what is right for them, but lap band always seemed right for me....still....that envy sure did creep up on me. Thanks, Carol Insurance approved 4/17/07, waiting on a surgery date--should be in May
  20. I have had one for years... and it gives different results every time I weigh in. I wouldn't get too excited. Water weight sounds low to me... if I am above 45% on the scale, I have clear pee. If I get too far below that, I start yellowing up and feeling dehydrated. Just my experience though.

    10-3-2007

I didn't get to ride my bike today....yet. I might try to get it in after hubby goes to bed. I still don't like exercising in front of him. It was a pretty good day. I'm pretty used to not eating much now. In some ways I can see how being on this pre-op diet can be beneficial. Not just because of the weight loss but that when I am banded I'm already used to not eating hardly anything. Here's what I had today: (typical of everyday) whey protein shake 2scoops in 8oz slim milk 2 slimfast shakes (I'm allowed 3 a day but lately have only been drinking 2) 1 1/2 cups broccoli 1 cup butternut squash soup (90 cals) 1 1/2 cups stir fry veggies 1 diet Dr. Pepper That's around 1200 cals. And I'm really not hungry. The first few days of this pre-op diet I ate like three times as many veggies but not anymore. I'm actually not supposed to have soup but I've been eating progresso's hearty tomato and tried this organic squash soup. The squash soup is pretty nasty. I like squash. I've eaten a lot of it the past two weeks but the soup just wasn't right. It smelled like pumpkin pie and tasted like onion, garlic squash. It messed with my senses. I am so ready for my surgery date. Not much longer. I am on the downhill side now at least. Well, Goodnight. Hope everyone is doing good on their journeys!
  22. Greetings, Epiphany!! I was scheduled to have the sleeve just about 6 weeks after my daughter did last summer because my cardiologist told me I had to lose weight because eventually I would have to get total knee replacements and no surgeon would do them at my weight. Well, I took a terrible fall and had to have my right knee done anyway because I could barely walk. So they will do it if you are injured...hahaha So I recovered from that quite nicely and then had the sleeve done in April, 2011. Sleeve, then knee is probably the best, but oh well...they are both done and I am on the way to better times. Keep us posted on your progress...Kathe
  23. Hello -- I've just discovered this site & am looking forward to hearing more @ your experiences! I'm new to the whole idea of WLS, and especially VSG -- but after much research & upon the advice of my Doctor, believe whole-heartedly that this is the best option for me. I was told 4 weeks ago that I needed total knee replacement surgery (we thought that I'd just been dealing with a knee injury that wasn't healing...!) -- and that my doctor wouldn't perform knee replacement until I'd lost a significant amount of weight. Knee doctor referred me to Dr. Ramiro "Sonny" Cavazos @ The Texas Center for Medical & Surgical Weight Loss. Had my first appointment with him + Nutritionist & Behavioral Health on 5/26/11 & am now doing 3 months of medically supervised weight loss as per my insurance company (already down 23 lbs!) & impatiently hoping to have a surgery date the end of August / beginning of September 2011. Motivated & very excited! Highest weight : 328 May 2011 Current weight: 303 Goal: 150-ish
