    Approved!

Lucky! Our process started Dec 10
  2. I am 63 years old and 50 years of obesity had taken a terrible toll on my quality of life. I dodged the diabetes and hypertension bullets, but I developed sleep apnea, had 1 knee replacement with the other knee very painful with shrinking cartilage. I couldn't hike, get on/off the floor with my grand kids, and was becoming more and more immobile. I could only see my life going downhill very quickly. I was on NSAIDS daily for the joint pain. Yes, I could lose weight - I have probably lost over 1,000 pounds all told, but always gained it back with more and more destruction of my metabolism. I also thought, "Maybe I should just try again to lose it on my own." My doctor brought me to my senses, "If you could have done it by now, you would have." So true. So I decided to have the surgery as a tool to help me finally overcome this obstacle in my life. Since surgery, I have not needed an NSAID at all! No joint pain! I can hike, play with the kids, go up/down stairs, and am much more active. I got a new job that is very, very active - I could not have done this job 6 months ago, I am not depressed - in fact many days I feel almost euphoric. I feel 10 years younger - maybe even 20 years younger! My sleep apnea is resolving, and I truly feel that I have been given a second chance at life. At my age, this is the last chance I get - I'm not going to blow it. This surgery has been an amazing gift to my health, self esteem, and my future. I now have new goals - to ride the 100+ mile El Tour de Tucson bike race, to hike the entire 830 mile Arizona Trail, and to never be on meds for diabetes, blood pressure, or cholesterol. And now I know I can do it! The quality of life is sooooooo worth it.

14 months out - Just a quick update.

You look beautiful! I know exactly what you mean by emotional eating. That and boredom are a real problem for me. I also lost my sweet Daddy a year ago. He was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme stage 4 brain cancer (the same thing John McCain had) and it was all down hill from there for the next 10 months. I took a fml leave from my job and spent some quality time with him as well as getting to take him everyday for his treatments. Having that time was quite a blessing. I am so sorry you did not have that with your Dad. I can imagine that only doubled the loss and pain you were feeling. Nothing ever prepares you for losing a parent no matter what age you are and how long you have with them. My family is Italian so our heritage set us up from birth to be eaters. We eat for every occasion, good, bad, happy and sad. I know I used my Dad's illness and death to over eat and I didn't care. I need what ever outlet I could find to feel better. I reached my highest weight at 192. I finally, am taking care of me. I'm the oldest child and caretaker of our family however, my own care was always being passed by. I want to be happy! I want to feel good in my body! I am so happy I decided on this sleeve journey. Sure it comes with great sacrifices and dedication but I am up for this life style change. I also, have fibromyalgia and want my weight loss to aide the symptoms I suffer from that disease. I was sleeved on June 13th and am doing great!! I'm down to 164.2 today! Anyone who is doubting this process or scared- I'm telling you can do this. The immediate gratification sure helps as a motivator. Girl, you look gorgeous so jump back on the wagon and hit the trail full speed. We are all going to mess up or cheat but that's ok. We have the tools to do this and we owe it to ourselves. To be happy, to be healthy and to be proud of our successes. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. I talked to one agency, and that was enough of that! I didn't like the idea that they only represent "some" of the facilities. If you go online, and do a search, you will find a better variety. Personally, I would Call Mr. Yanez (above) at Bariatric Pal Hospital. That is where I will be having my surgery on 10/1!
  5. I am going to Mexico on 9/30 for sleeve surgery on 10/1. I did a lot of research and my final decision was to go with Bariatric Pal Hospital in Tijuana. You can find lots of WLS centers in Mexico, just do your research. Oh, and btw, before you go check to see about follow up with you pcp/med insurance. Mine will not cover visits for that specific issue, however, I have spoken with my pcp and I think I have found a way around it. If not, I will be going to another clinic and just pay for the visits out of pocket.

    June 2019 challenge

Well, let's see. For 17 - I've been trying to live my life in such a way as to make #10 be true since whenever I had the aha moments about what I want to be remembered by which came before we did #10. For today and de-cluttering the non-physical...that would be where meditation and mindfulness come in for me and letting go of whatever I have no control over so it doesn't take up too much head space. I've definitely fizzled out on the physical challenge for the month but not on going to the gym regularly (at least 6 days a week).

Hi Margaret, I was looking at patients of Dr Rosenthal's profiles and activity to see how their recovery was, since he's also going to be my surgeon, and noticed that you had also looked at their profiles. Did you have your sleeve and was it by Dr Rosenthal? If so how was your recovery?

  9. My DS surgery was april of 2018 with Dr. Bruce at Bariatrics of NC . All has been good, but then I rate having stomach pains really bad that lasted a long time when it happened just two months ago. It has only happened about 3-4 times, so naturally I went back to my surgeon and spoke to him about it. I thought maybe I was dehydrated , but he said NOPE, you have an internal hernia going on... and that I would need surgery as soon as I can make the appointment. Sooner than later he stressed! He could not do the surgery which disappointed me but he referred me to Dr. Lindsay Sharpe. So 1 week later I made an appointment which I had surgery done with Dr. Sharpe just yesterday 6/17/19 lasted about an hour. It started out as a diagnostic lap surgery to see exactly what was going on , and indeed it was the hernia that they found. They fixed it and I went home today and I feel a lot of pain but otherwise I just have to rest and no lifting for 3 weeks and no exercise for 6 weeks. They said because of the weight loss that it opened up a gap around my intestines causing blockage and this happened. Not sure on all details until my follow up next Tuesday but once I know ALL the details , I will post on here. Its funny now when you have surgery , you don't see the surgeon afterwards... you have to wait until follow up appointment to really get full details. his Medical assistant filled me in but not totally, so I am kinda in limbo on details. I cant wait for Tuesday to find out what he did exactly ! Has anyone had this happen to them after DS surgery?

    Sense of smell heightened

Right after surgery, most of the people around me smelled like corn! I don't know what that was about but it passed. A lot of smells still bother me that never did before. I am 10 weeks post-op.

    Left side pain?

Hi there! I had the same thing and it was more uncomfortable when I first woke up but I was told by my surgeon that the gas pain can last up to a 7-10 days after surgery as everyone expels the gas (the stuff they pump you up with during surgery) as different times. Hope this helps! Sent from my moto g(6) using BariatricPal mobile app
  16. As my anesthesiologist told me right before the surgery “what wouldn’t be normal is not being scared”. It was my first surgery ever and lots of things went through my head. But truth is that the only “bad” day was the first one. And the pain was really manageable with the meds they gave me. I even refused stronger pain meds on the second day after having an allergic reaction to one of them. Recovery is tough on the mind, but it’s all about using all the tools you have around and trusting your support system. I’m getting a bit frustrated at the time, but am trying to focus on the light at the end of the tunnel. Doctor said my life expectancy was being cut short by 10 years if I continued on that path, and that certainly freaked me out more than anything I’ve gone through since surgery.
  17. Hi everyone. I had my r n y on May 22nd and was discharged the very next day. Everything was going well just the minimum pulling at the incision sites and soreness. About two weeks after surgery I woke up in the middle of the night with severe pain in my stomach and then began throwing up it scared me so bad because I was so worried about tearing something inside and my doctor is in San Antonio Texas miles away from here in Mississippi. I was just at the point of soft foods and was tolerating scrambled eggs and refried beans and yogurt. But slowly I am now not able to tolerate anything but liquids. I get this ball feeling in my chest like something is stuck a rock and it sliding up and down and then shortly after that I start throwing up. It's not food it's a very thick mucus. I have developed a severe UTI and was prescribed an antibiotic in liquid form but I can't even keep that down. The doctor said there is narrowing at a certain point after the surgery where the stomach connects to the small intestines and he said within a week or two it should dilate itself. Has anyone else experienced this? I sure hope it goes away. Sent from my LG-H910 using BariatricPal mobile app
  18. Girl, I barely made it a week on liquids. But also, listen to your doctor blah blah. I have no idea why yours specifically would be asking for a month of liquids. That sounds insane to me & I can only imagine how frustrated you are especially when we all have completely different instructions. My pre-op was no carbs for a week & then one day of liquids. My post op was 2 weeks of liquids: protein shakes, soups, liquid yogurt. I nearly lost my mind & I was freaking hungry & annoyed. I think I added cottage cheese around day 9 or 10 but I keep that on the down low because I mentioned it once here & a bunch of people went nuts on me. I think the next stage was puree, but my doctor had like all soft foods in there. Like meatloaf was okay. Potatoes, refried beans. I am trying to stay away from carbs so I wasn't real interested in adding those in. I went pretty much from liquids to: yogurt, ground beef, ground chicken, eggs, cheese. I'm 3.5 weeks out & for the most part that's all I'm eating, in some variation. Oh and quiche. I'm eating a lot of quiche with eggs, cheese & veggies. Measured into 4oz servings. Everyone is going to tell you to follow the plan and talk to your doctor, which is wise advice. But also very frustrating knowing that if you'd gone to another doctor across town they may very well have another plan entirely. This entire thing is so confusing to me. I've not eaten one thing that's disagreed with me thus far. I'm being careful, and like I said I have a fairly basic list of items I'm eating but I keep waiting for some of these side effects I'm hearing about because I feel nothing. I tried salmon this weekend. It was fine. Tried cucumber. Fine. I force myself to stay to 4oz & count every calorie, gram of protein and ounce of water. I've not been sick at all. Drinking (water) is a total breeze.

I am so very excited for you. I have my one last mandatory dietician appointment tomorrow. All we talked about the last time was our years as military wives. I had the band for 10 years and pretty much understand the diet. Then I have to wait for approval, having said that I've done everything they said I have to do. I just want to get this all underway!! Good luck with your journey!

    Hello All

I think I posted something Saturday evening but honestly most of my stay was a blur. My surgery was on 6/12/19- @ 08:00 am- I was discharged home from the hospital yesterday in the evening. I don’t want to bore you all repeating what I most likely posted but I just cannot find it 😓 my BP dropped I remember the room spinning and I felt drenched in sweat. I had two blood transfusions over 2 days, I have seen so many posts/videos of people @ 5,6 days post op and they are dancing and laughing. Y’all I feel like I got hit by a truck and today I feel worse than yesterday. Well thank you for letting me vent and I really do sound like a big baby 😊 I just realized as I am typing this how different we all are and we heal differently. I am grateful to be alive and have been given this chance to live again!!
  21. You would think they would encourage it, knowing it is money in the doctors hand. I would had to say. I may not be as other pat9 you might see but my health is at stake and I am excited that I lost 10 and if I could lose weight on my own I would have already accomplished that. I think if the Surgeon knew she would be fired. Sent from my LM-Q710(FGN) using BariatricPal mobile app

    What The Hell Man

Omg yes yes yes On my journey pre op. I was finally hearing everything that they have been holding in. They would talk so negatively about my weight or say yea you were actually really big. My starting weight was 430. I had my surgery June 11 2019. And now I’m getting comments such as you don’t want to be that big again. Or your not losing enough yet. I’m literally a week out tomorrow. Definitely have to try to not let the negativity bother me. But it’s definitely hard when it’s your family or friend.
