    Good abdominal exercises???

Planks are excellent cause they work the entire core - front, back, chest, and hips/legs. Any kind of core work is a fantastic idea. There are a ton of options. I also really like the mountain climber (if you do look it up - I do a slower, more controlled version, keeping my body in a straight line - don't lift the hips up and curve the back or you negate most core work). If you do decide to go with sit-ups, studies have shown that quicker reps work your abs harder than a slow, controlled movement. :frown: To add...about the underarms. Two very good workouts are either the close-grip bench press or push-ups with the hands closer together. Two options, there - so whether or not you have access to a weight room, you can go either direction.

    Hair Loss

The loss you're seeing now is part of a cycle that started with surgery and your initial weight loss. Those hairs went into shock and stopped growing until a few months later they fall out. But the next stage starts right away, which is those hairs start growing again in your scalp. The sucky part is you will lose new shocked hairs due to the rapid weight loss, so your hair will be going through this cycle until your weight stabilizes. There isn't anything you are doing wrong or missing out on to stop it. Get all your Protein and then wait it out. This too shall pass!
  3. Hey Guys, Yesterday I decided that I would treat myself to a small piece of chocolate. I know that sugar is not recommended during the weight loss phase, but I just wanted to see how I would feel about it post surgery and I was confident it wouldn't become a habit. Honestly, it tasted wrong. It was WAY too sweet, artificial tasting, and left me with a sore throat and generally feeling like crap for a couple of hours. So now I've learnt my lesson. I can't believe after only two weeks my taste has changed so much. I have seen that quite a few people here have found that sweet things no longer float their boat. I was wondering why this happens? I'm certainly not complaining, but am just interested.
  4. Ok, so I am 5 days post op and haven't lost anything! I am really getting frustrated! when will the weight start coming off? And why hasn't it already?
  5. You should start dropping weight soon as the swelling and Water retention subside. But also, here's a head's up – at about three weeks out you will stop losing again for 2-3 weeks. Don't freak out - it's normal and expected. After that the weight will start falling off again if you stick to your program. And really work to get your fluids in every day! It's important!!!

    need good scale suggestions

Your scale isn't "off". You aren't supposed to weight yourself repeatedly (or any other object weighing exactly the same) on a home digital scale repeatedly. You have to wait at least five minutes between readings. Even when the display goes off, it's still going. If you don't want to wait five minutes, you could take the battery out, which would reset the scale, but that whole process would probably take you five minutes anyway. Why do you need to weigh yourself three times in a row? Is it OCD? If it's OCD, a scale with a dial would be a much better choice for you. You can hop on and off of one of those 10, 20, 30 times in a row and see the exact same results over and over if you want.
  7. I am 5.7 height wise i checked i am someone that can have the surgery. I want this really bad but i have to check if my health care will help with some of the cost or all  I have one doctor that does it in my area. Doctor Fox from Richland WA (tri-citys area) The cost is a lot but my health is more important then any amount of money. And yes i have tried diet. I used to go to the gym a lot, and i could run on the tredmills, and bikes for hours, but no results. I started gaining weight out of high school. I gained about 100lbs since 2006.
  8. Hi everyone! I hope you experienced bandsters can offer some advice and thoughts on this. I've been holding off on buying new clothes for work believing and hoping that I'd begin to lose weight and 1) I could wear some of my old clothes and 2) I could not throw my money away on clothes that I wouldn't be able to wear in a short time frame (because they would be too big). Anyway I finally gave in today because frankly I feel like I look like I slob at the office all the time and constantly wearing the same things over and over again. I've had one fill so far and haven't lost a single pound (I keep recycling the same 3lbs though). I'm due to go in for another next week but I really have lost faith that #2 will be my lucky number. So I went shopping tonight and found I could fit into clothes 2 sizes smaller than I usually wear. I was so excited I ran home to jump on the scale and was baffled when it read the same thing as it did 2 weeks ago! How is it that I can wear a smaller size but haven't lost a pound? Is my fat moving around or something? Are sizes getting bigger? Also, I'm sort of scared to go to my dr next week given that I haven't lost anything since the last time I was there. Is she going to be mad at me? Ridiculous question perhaps but it still has me concerned. I feel like a loser as it is, I don't want to hear it from my dr too (not that she has ever done anything like that to me) but still concerned. Thanks everyone!!!

    Questions about net calorie intake

I wouldn't push it too much, though. It really depends on the diet your surgeon/nutritionist recommended for you. In my case, i was to average 600-700 calories weeks 2-3 then bump it to 800 by week 4. My nutritionist said "your calorie counting days are over; just listen to your body and eat the proper portions - your sleeve will let you know when you've had enough". Intense cardio every day this soon after surgery seems a bit much - the weight WILL come off. I applaud your commitment, so know I'm in your corner - just take it easy and don't try to rush the results. Best of luck!

    need good scale suggestions

I just bought a new scale because my NUT wanted me to track percent body fat instead of pounds. It's the withings scale. It's super cool! It measures my weight, percent body fat, heart rate and bluetooths it all to my phone! It's like a new toy! Lol!

    need good scale suggestions

I have a digital weight watchers scale I got at Bed Bath and Beyond and can step on it 20 times in a row and get the same weight reported back to me. I agree the inconsistency would drive me batty. I find I have to replace my scales every 2-4years as that's when they start to act up. I always thought it was due to the moisture in the bathroom. Who knows...
  13. Hi everyone! Here's my 6 week update! The beginning was rough but I have no regrets. I'm feeling better every day. I have a lot more to go but am getting there! Pre OP : 225 Current weight: 190

    pre-op - need to talk - Long

Hi Martha, I just recently quit smoking (9 days ago). I did it cold turkey, because I couldn't take anything to asist me for various reasons. I completely empathize with you as well as send my support. Quitting smoking was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. The physical withrawals were horrible. My experience was: day 1 was mind over matter day 2 I slept through most of the day to try to get through the physical withdrawals which really kicked in day 3 was a Monday and I was back at work... omg this was the worst day ever! the physical withdrawals were the worst. I spend much of the day researching withdrawals and quitting smoming online to find out when it would get better. day 4 not pleasant but better than day 3 day 5 I finally felt like I was going to make it. Today I finally feel strong enough to know I am really doing it this time. I know I won't go back to smoking because I never want to go through that type of total discomfort again. I will agree that it is hard to quit smoking and focus on changing your eating habits. I think I gained about 3 or 4 pounds in a week. This weekend I am back to working on my eating again. I am not sure if any of this helps, but I mostly just wanted to voice my support and encouragement. Quitting smoking is hard. I read this one post from a woman asking where the balloons and confetti were. She felt like the sky should open up and balloons and confetti should fall down upon her to Celebrate her accomplishment of quitting smoking. I think she order some doves, rainbows and unicorns too. You can do this. Just keep trying. It takes a few tries. Sorry for all the rambling and random thoughts. lol Bonnie

    Protein Question

I just added up the grams of Protein I'm getting on the liquid diet that I've been put on, 44 grams a day. It's not enough but I'm afraid to add anymore protein because I need to lose weight or the surgery is going to be postponed. Any suggestions?

    Passing out

I do have problems with this. In June I passed out after standing up too fast. It was 2 weeks after cervical fusion and because of that I ended up in the emergency room. I was referred to a cardiologist and an endocrinologist and had a full work up. For me, my blood pressure runs low as does my heart rate. If I stand up too fast the room turns black and I pass out. My heart is perfectly healthy, I just run with a low heart rate and pressure. This is common following massive weight loss. I had to learn to be careful when standing or sitting from a laying position. I hope you feel better soon.
  22. ((hugs)) Sorry about your miscarriage and happy about your 2 children. If it were me, I would do 2 things now. 1. Go see my WLsurgeon and get them to send me to a nutritionist and a therapist in that order. Start the 6 month documentation with the therapist now. Get to finally working on the eating behaviors that are keeping me heavy and down. Get all of my blood work done to r/o thyroid, endocrine issues and/or underlying medical conditions. 2. Start working on getting an approval for revision to DS and find a surgeon in my network that can do that revision surgery--not all surgeons will or can do revisions to DS or RNY. Honestly, at this present weight and with the problems you had losing to goal with the VSG and if it was me, I'd go nuclear on my weight. DS is THEEEEEEEE most effective wl tool from a malabsorption standpoint--especially given what I think may also be the emotional/psychological eating issues associated with the regain and present weight. BTW, no judgement here. We all deal with emotional/behavioral issues with food relationships that simply MUST be fixed if we want to have any hope of losing and keeping the weight off long term.
  23. I never hit my goal weight either, and I've regained since then. Not sure how much: I'm afraid to look at the scale. I hope it's only 15, but I think it might be closer to 25 or 30. I've gotten addicted to processed carbs again, so I need to go off them, but it's tough. I was near perfect on my diet for a year, but never did any exercise. I think that really prevented me from reaching my goal. I'm feeting very motivated to exercise now; in fact, I'm going tomorrow to get a gym membership. (I do much better at exercise with a gym membership than working out at home.) I'd like to do keto because it's so effective, but since the surgery, my body really does not like it when I eat much fat. Also, there aren't a lot of protein sources I like, so I'm thinking about looking into a more plant based diet. I like the idea of fruits, vegetables, beans, string cheese, Greek yogurt, eggs, and some meat here and there. I should go back to protein shakes, but I drank so many for so long that I'm really tired of them. I think I'll start the Pound of Cure diet and see where it takes me. Anyway, good luck to you! It's tough when it seems that everyone else has been so successful, but tomorrow is another chance at success.

    Muscle issues?

Great job looking into getting the ball rolling! Being obese can cause orthopedic issues as it affects posture, joints, etc... Due to many years of obesity, I have severe ankylosing spondylosis in my entire spine and bilateral posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD). These conditions cause varying levels of pain, my cervical spine being the worst & constant pain. The PTTD requires me to wear braces to prevent pain & allow me to do things I couldn't do without braces. As I lost weight, increased my exercise & worked with a physical therapist, I was able to use less supportive braces. I began with custom AFO's (knee height), then SMO's (just over the ankle bone), until now, just UCBL's (a custom orthotic that comes up a smidge higher on my foot than a regular orthotic. I mention this because, you don't want to do any damage. Please see an orthopedic doctor for a full evaluation.
  25. Hi there. I'm new. I've been researching, considering WLS for the past couple of months. I learned my insurance won't cover, so Mexica may be an option if I move forward. As I complete my health history for one clinic, I am wondering who is going to do surgery on a 60-year-old in poor health? Yet, I understand so many candidates receive surgery because of their health. - I've been hypothyroid for 20 years, which has progressed now to autoimmune thyroid. - I've had several surgeries over the years. Mainly: two cesareans, hysterectomy, hernia repair, gallbladder removal, pacemaker. I also have asthma, and neuropathy in feet due to degenerative disc disease. I've been referred to Mayo Clinic for what my doctor believes are autoimmune-related issues. Has anyone here been denied surgery due to health/age? I am considering WLS to help with health issues after I visit Mayo Clinic. I was told by one reputable clinic in Mexico I would not be a candidate for the sleeve; I'd need a gastric bypass if accepted. Getting this weight off (goal of about 85 lbs.) would help with arthritis and autoimmune, etc. Anyone have similar experience? I look at my application and realize I may just be beyond the scope of consideration. I'd appreciate some feedback. Thank you! I wish you all well in your journey!
