    One year & 90lbs!

I LOVE to go out to eat! At fancier restaurants, I often eat off the appetizer menu and appetizers often have the Protein without all the excess starch fillers like rice, Pasta, potato. I don't need the soup/salad option either. Don't tell my surgeon, but I love to go out for a glass of wine and "dinner" which is often something like bacon wrapped sea scallops or seared tuna. My close friends know I had surgery so they don't question what I eat. Folks who don't know I had surgery will sometimes ask if that's all I'm going to eat. Folks who know I've lost a large amount of weight and comment on how much I eat will usually ask if I've lost the weight by eating so much less. The first six months was quite an adjustment for me and eating out was harder for me to navigate.

    Cigna in Texas

I have a Cigna HMO plan. I am more than 100 pounds over weight, BMI of 41 and sleep apnea. Has anyone been able to get Cigna to pay for the lap band surgery? I am in the early decision making process and honestly cannot afford $12K plus out of pocket. Thanks!

    Questions

I have not completely thrown the hospital stay out the door. I would just prefer not to. I have had 2 surgeries that were more extensive than the lapband seems to be. I have had Ovarian Cysts removed and scar tissue removed from them also. Along with the Utreus removed from the Bowel. All this is caused from being over weight. Then 9 mos later I had my Gallbladder removed. And neither of these were a over night stay. My ins had said at both surgeries that if it required a over night stay it would pay. I have tried weight watchers, regular diets and anything new that came up and with all I had no luck. I have done my homework and really want to have this done.

    Another surgery?

@wnusrt1 hey bud the answer to your question is yes!!! the most common reason for conversion is terrible/unbearable heartburn😣 you didn't mention if you have that problem? not pointing fingers, but have you totally been eating correctly? Portions esp. the sleeve only works with you, if you work with it. (saying this, and below with TLC) if you are getting the GB, thinking you might loose weight and keep it off/problem solved? not necessarily true you will loose the weight initially- but If you don't change your eating habits, you might gain again. eeeek Try and give the sleeve another chance - you might not have that much restriction now, but if you follow the rules of protein, water etc. you can't help but loose weight.☺️ do a liquid diet/protein shakes for awhile, this will give you a jump start in loosing more weight gradually go to soft - etc. i emphasize watch your portion sizes. i know my portion sizes were through the roof before sleeve (7+ years ago) lets meet for drinks, info - conversation, i'm buying, water of course😁 good luck☺️ kathy

    I can be prejudiced too

Oh, I can be like a reformed smoker, I can be very prejudiced and yes, grossly overweight people sometimes disgust me. But really, there's people who are well groomed, smell good, have nice personalities and nice manners no matter what they weigh and you respond well to them, its about more than just whether they're fat or not. But I do feel like, well I sorted MY weight problem, why cant you. What really really really gets to me though, is fat attitude. I cant help it. I realise that part of becoming morbidly obese is the changes it makes in you as a person. But the old, I cant exercise because I have pain, or I have 3 kids and I work, or I cant eat right because I get too hungry, etc etc, it really bothers me. I have pain every single darn day from my back and my ankle, and I still run! I ignore it. I dont have BAD pain and some do, so I cant speak for that but people who are just so freaking lazy, who wont cook properly for themselves or look after themselves and then they go and complain because they're morbidly obese? I have absolutely no patience with it! And that's unfair because I was like that to a large degree and its taken time for me to find an efficient, energetic, go getter inside me. I was a fat blob who'd rather sit on the couch. Perhaps that disgusts me becuase I see too much of myself in it?

    Kinda Failed Psych Exam

The psychologist that I went and saw wrote a summary to my surgeon about my visit. I had to take this MMP1 (something like that) 500 question true false exam. I marked true on a lot of questions such as I have low self esteem. This is due to my weight but you can't explain that. Now the letter is summarized with "I recommend bariatric surgery with reservation" and that he recommend that I see a psychologist. Do you think this will make me exempt from UHC's requirements?
  11. Hi, I'm new to the forum. I just attended my first informational seminar. I've been reading some posts on here and I have a question. Why does your doctor want you to lose weight before surgery?

    Will I B Happy

I'm one month away from my self funded surgery in the UK. I have told some family and limited friends. I too have previously thought of myself as a failure for considering surgery and worried that others might think that too. Recently I've taken a good hard look at myself and realised I do everything to hide my weight. I want a fulfilling life and it's only myself stopping that. A TV celebrity said after her lap band surgery that the band is there to moderate her food because she can't do it herself. I feel I need this as my starting tool. With weight loss comes confidence and energy. I'm quite prepared not to be able to afford to socialise for quite a while but when I do, I'll be holding my head up high instead of hiding away at the back of a room!!

    Pre-Surgery Weight Loss

I was told to lose between 40-50 pounds before surgery. Every surgeon is different, and as you can see I did not make it to that. When I saw him my last visit, he said just keep trying 'harder'. I have another month, and I am not stressing over it honestly, his partner who will be assisting him said i am doing fantastic on my weight loss so far. Go figure!!
  14. If I were you I'd go see a nutritionist for six months only because it seems like your insurance is going to give you a hard time about this. I have Kaiser and they require six months of supervised weight loss with a nutritionist and to me its the best way to get a accurate/official log. Just a suggestion, but good luck!
  15. I think I'm worried about missing my old favorite foods, but the way I've been trying to think about it is I'm going to gain new favorite foods and things to enjoy. It won't be in the large amounts but I'll learn to appreciate/savor it more. And I also won't feel like I NEEEED to eat all the time either, because my stomach won't be the size of Mexico. Also a thing to remember is the way you're eating right now won't be forever. Eventually you'll be able to make meals (albeit very small) and you'll learn to enjoy those too. Also I've heard from a lot of people that their cravings change after the surgery and their favorite foods just aren't appealing to them anymore. But even if this isn't the case for you I'm 100% sure you'll do amazing on it.

    Energy after surgery?

I've not had a problem at all with energy since having the sleeve 5 months ago. In fact, I might even have more energy now that I've lost some weight and I go to the gym and/or walk 5-6 days a week.

    Freaking out about hairloss

I had the sleeve in March 2014 and have lost 62 lbs. I have always had excessively thick hair and it was my best feature. I have lost 2/3 of it in the past month. Everytime I wash my hair it looks like a small rodent has died in my shower. I just saw my doctor last week and all my labs are very good. I get enough Protein, Vitamins, and Water. I did lose weight fast so that may be the problem. I'm going to do the Biotin, Super B Complex, and Acai juice in hopes my hair will grow back.
  18. Today was my first day of my 90 day weight loss management! I met with the PA and the surgeon and went over a food plan. So excited!! Even though I'm only required to lose 12 lbs I'm going to try for at least 30lbs for surgery. Went to costco stocked up on good healthy food and Protein bars they recommended went home and meal prepped for the week, and now I feel like im good to go. Taking it one day at a time Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. I’ve been feeling a bit down lately. I’m almost 8 months post op and so close to 100 lbs down. This past week I gained 4 lbs and it’s really getting to me. Despite losing so much, I still have 100 to go, and I don’t really see where the 100 lbs has come from. I feel so much better physically, but I feel like I look so weird. I’ve gone down only 3 pant sizes and only lost 1 inch around my calves, which seems crazy for a 100 (almost) lb loss. And I have huge calves to start with. (24 inches!!) I don’t know if it’s hormones, stress from work, or if this is a typical feeling at this point in the journey. Any advice or suggestions?
  20. I had a few small set backs after surgery which were really not that bad only it seemed worse because all these people I talked to before my surgery were all great after there surgery and I wasn't so I did get a little down after. But then I found this forum and heard others having the same issue's so I felt so much better and it really helped me. My husband has been a great help around the house, only if he would stop eating reese's peices infront of me all the time. He has no weight problem and I realize he can't go with out everything for me so we are adjusting. You can do this and you will feel so much better and I am sure your Father will come around as he see's you feeling better about your self.

    Measures, Measures, Measures

Hi Bea! I have been waiting ever since you posted this to be able to start using it! I'm now on my preop diet and plugging the numbers in every day! I have a question regarding the Predictions (Preop) and Actuals (postop) sections. These 2 sections did not automatically plug in my dates. In the actuals, it is updating my weight and BMI, but the dates are still wrong. The dates posted in the top cell of those two sections are 8/30/13. My preop started 11/30/13 and my surgery date is 12/13/13. So, I'm not sure which date should even go on top for Month 1 and I'm not sure what or how to change it to autopopulate. Excel is so, so foreign to me! Do you have any suggestions? Thanks so much!

    Can You offer advice

I just want to thank you for the words of wisdom and support- I have got my mind and heart set now to focus on myself- to start loosing weight and to be happy.
  25. I know how you feel. I am still waiting on my first appointment. It will be Sept. 11. I feel like my health is at risk. I already have a few comorbidities and I know more are on their way if I don't do something about my weight. I have tried to lose weight many times through my whole adult life and have had a little success here and there but always gained it all back plus more. I need to do something different, something that will help me succeed for real. I really believe that if I don't lose this weight soon, I am going to die. So, for me, the risks of not having the surgery are far greater than having it. This is a very personal decision, so I wish you the best while you research and pray. height : 5 ft, weight: 270, BMI: 53 Cant wait to get sleeved!
