    Help

I was banded on the 7th, and was fine for three days. Come day four, THAT's when I was attacked by the gas pain. Instead of having the gas move up through my left side and sit at my shoulders, it decided it was going to stay lower, closer to my abdomen. It took me a day or so to figure out that's what it was. I thought I had not been doing my breathing treatments enough (or something like that), and that I possibly had a collapsed lung, because I just could NOT take a deep breath (the pain was all on my left side). I had a nurse friend take a look, and he helped me figure out that it was the gas, and it was preventing me taking that deep breath that I wanted without some pain. It wasn't till about two days ago that it finally started to subside for me...and today I'm almost there...best thing I could do was walk it off...nothing else seemed to help.
  2. I didn't experience this but at 2 1/2 weeks I was still on liquids. What are you eating?
  3. I am wondering when everyone started taking vitamins postop? My doctor didn't say anything about it other than all pills needs to be crushed for at least a month. Did everyone crush their vitamins or is there a decent liquid vitamin (I gagged on a liquid one I bought at my local hospital pharmacy and threw it out). Or did people not take them (I am paranoid and want to start taking them due to the upcoming hair loss). I have the chewable vitamins but don't know when I can start taking them since I have to be on liquids for 2.5 weeks post-op. Are there any vitamin lozenges? I had my surgery this Monday 3/22 in Mexico and I am feeling just fine. Not sure if I am drinking too fast - get kinda tight in the chest but nothing else. I walked 3 miles today. Thank you for any input you can provide.
  4. I agree... call your doc. By week two I was able to do more
  5. I was up to my normal speed walking almost as soon as I got out of the hospital, although I couldn't go as far and usually took a nap after each walk during the first two weeks. I walked a 5k (3.1 miles) reindeer run 3.5 weeks after surgery and finished in under an hour, which was about the same time I had done a 5k in September. (Surgery was in November). I didn't start running until after January 1 because the holidays got in my way, but I swam laps as soon as they cleared me for the pool at about 4 weeks. The big thing is to listen to your body. There was a run in mid February where my left side near my largest incision started hurting when I ran. (not bad just letting me know it was there) As long as I only walked it was fine, so I didn't run and finished my time walking instead. When I went back a few days later for my next run, it didn't bother me so I ran as planned. I don't know what might have happened if I kept pushing through the pain. Maybe nothing, but I wasn't willing to risk it. Good luck and be patient. pam
  6. I tried my best to go for walks at the park a few days after getting home on 4/15 surgery date was 4/13. I could say I was walking 30 minutes 4 times a weeks. After my post up 2 week follow up I was approved to start doing exercise such as walking on a treadmill and elliptical. However, I've felt really lazy and tired a lot more than the first few days after surgery so haven't really done much exercise. At my last appt I was told I was slightly anemic. I'm worried that maybe i'm more anemic as I am having symptoms like pale skin, dizziness, and am so tired! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  7. I could walk at a normal pace as soon as I went home. I walked 2 miles on Day 3 or 4, and felt great. Was cleared for all exercise at about 3.5 weeks. I had pretty much no pain after Day 4 or 5, just mainly stomach discomfort. I guess I had some tenderness at home, but it was pretty minimal. I did my first real workout with a trainer around Day 28, but I think I could have started jogging sooner, but my surgeon only cleared me for walking before then. 8. For years - I have probably been up and down 40-50 lbs three or four times in my life - Adkins or Sugarbusters seemed to work the best on me. Now I find myself one month out of sleeve surgery and not able to eat red meat or chicken yet (which for years has been my mainstay - avoid the carbs and eat the lean meats right?). Since the surgery I am not hungry at all. The only way I know to eat is I get a weird kind of pain in the middle of my back and realize it is meal time. Presurgery I did the shakes and protein pudding and lost some pounds and thought the shakes would work for me after surgery. I am not sure what happened but since the surgery the shakes make me GAG. It is so weird to have to 'make" myself eat something. After years of being able to eat everything and anything.....I find myself standing in the kitchen scratching my head ALOT. I am really not hungry. I think to myself "drink the shake" and almost immediatly think "barf". I have ordered the chicken soup with protein added. I am hoping when it gets here that will help my problem. I really can't eat enough real food right now to meet the protein 40-50 mark and I really just can't do the shakes. Will there come a time when I can eat enough meat to not have to do the protein supplements? Will it hurt for now if I only get 30 ish of protein for the next couple of weeks? I am loosing alot of weight and my energy and stamina feel fine. I have lost 37 lbs so far (10 were presurgery). Thanks for any suggestions.
  9. I have aetna. it's a 6 month thing as well. I see a nutritionist and a doctor on each visit. She talks to me about what she wants to see me eating and doing. it started with just logging what you eat and start any kind of activity that gets you moving. now we're moving into calorie restriction and making sure that i'm challenging myself when I work out. Oh and she's always reminding me about the rules of food now. No drinking a half hour before or hour after eating, this was hard at first but now it's not bad at all. She encouraged me to start looking for a Protein drink that I like, she's said that since the before diet is a week's worth of Protein drinks it's very important to find one that you like and not just tolerate or it's not gonna work. Good news is that I did, muscle milk powder seems to do very well for me w/ just Water. I will say the nutritionist is not covered usually by insurance and I have to pay out of pocket at the time of visit. I don't really have a problem w/ this but it's something to consider. I think they're just doing all the paper work that they can to prove that I'm doing what I'm supposed so that the sleeve works. imho the doctor visit that follows the nut. visit is a grand waste of time. But it's a hoop and if it means they'll pay for my sleeve then i'm all for it.
  10. You've been banded less than two weeks. Most doctors would still have you on a liquid or mushy diet. This is a time for healing, for letting the band settle into it's place around your stomach and for the stitches placed around it to heal. Eating solid foods would not be the ideal thing for your band right now. I'd say you are uncomfortable when you eat because you really shouldn't be eating much yet. What are your surgeon's post-op diet requirements? As far as eating habits go, that is something that you are going to have to work on yourself. Have you always been one to eat very little during the day, then go wild at night? Or is it just a result of the discomfort you get when eating now?

    Cooking for your Family

Well I am only 1.5 weeks out so right now it is more difficult. I am still on full liquids and I'm hungry! Its hard to cook all these yummy foods and not eat them. But I think once I move onto solids it will be much better. My husband started eating healthier last year (lost 60lbs!) So we eat pretty healthy as a family. Once I can chew my food and eat it, I look forward to trying new recipes and getting creative in the kitchen. Good luck and way to go..5 kids, your super mom lol

    Stomach virus or ? (graphic)

How far post-op are you? During the first two weeks I was basically a walking commercial for Imodium when I needed to leave the house. It was bad!
  13. Hello! I have finished the mandatory classes, got approved, and am booked to meet with Dr. Quilici tomorrow at 2pm in Burbank! I struggled with weight my entire life, so I've decided on the RNY. 5'1" and the highest weight in my life is 285lbs in my early 40's. I am now 46 and weigh 268lbs have chronic lower back pain (congenital), HBP, and have hypothyroidism. I am on day 1 of my pre-op liquid diet. My lowest ever adult weight was 112lbs and that was in my late 20's to mid 30's and was not a diet any nutritionist would approve . I'm a teacher on summer vacation and was hoping to have the surgery well before school starts so that I can recover in relative comfort, but it looks as though I may not be able to do that and that will have only a week to recover. I can complete a lot of my classroom set up before the surgery, but I'm now wondering if I should prepare to have a sub start the year (which is not ideal and starts the year off on a bad foot). Any teachers out there who have had this surgery with suggestions or advice?

    Pills

I have no problem taking my pills, I do break the larger ones in half though. I only needed liquid the first week or so. I bought liquid tylenol and never even used it. I also bought a pill crusher and never used it.
  15. I'm really struggling this week to get calories in and with heartburn. I'm sooooooo tired! I'll be 3 weeks out tomorrow. I have my post op appt Tuesday. I've thrown up a couple times bc I've eaten too fast. That's definitely not fun.
  16. I am just over two months out. I have no pain at all now, and had little after the first few days. I have lost about 45 - 50 pounds - I only weigh myself about once a week, and look tons better - to myself anyway. The riskiest part of getting the sleeve is the surgery itself. It is absolutely crucial to get an experienced, quality doctor - working in a hospital - with a very low rate of complications. Don't, don't, don't go to Tijuana for your sleeve, and research thoroughly ANY (US, too) doctor that you are thinking of using. As you work in a hospital, you KNOW that there are the good and the bad doctors. Make sure that yours is a good one with 500 or more sleeves under his/her belt. It is very sensible that you have provided time for your self after surgery. Most people rush to it, through it, and back to their normal lives. You probably won't need twenty days or even ten, but it is good to prepare. Good luck.

    Question

Hi Everyone This is my first time message so I wasn't sure where to post it, but I figured I would try here. Long story short I was banded at the end of July. I had a lower BMI and have lost 40 pounds so far and am more than half way to my goal. I had to have two revision surgeries due to excessive burping, which has been fixed due to a new band (so thankful!). I had the realize band put in a little over a month ago. These past few days I have been experiencing severe port pain. It is very difficult to bend over and go from sitting to standing or visa versa. If I even move the wrong way a little bit I get a very painful twinge. I know it is common to be uncomfortable with the realize band port in the beginning, I just wanted to know if anyone has had an onset of more severe pain a few weeks after. I did see my surgeon today and he does not seem to be concerned about it. He checked for infection and said that I don't seem to have one, but obviously to come back if I develop any of the symptoms (I already had an infection so I know what to look for). He also said that my body is healing from the three surgeries in a short period of time. I trust him completely and I do think it is my body just getting used to the hooks in the muscle, but was hoping to hear from someone that had a similar experience and has advice as to how to make it feel a little better because it is pretty painful. My other question was to see if anyone had any granulation tissue at the incision site. After the third surgery I had an infection. After it went away I noticed a hard scab on my bellybutton. Once the scab came off I realized that I had what looked like a hard sac of Fluid covering my bellybutton. The doctor put silver nitrate on it and said it was granulation tissue that had pushed out through the incision. He said the silver nitrate only works in 30% of patients and that if it didn't work it would have to be removed. I was so nervous because I did not want to have anymore procedures. Luckily I went back today and it has reduced so much. The doctor put more of the silver nitrate on and said to monitor it, but it should disappear. I just wanted to know if anyone else had granulation tissue at the incision site because I have searched through the threads and haven't really found anyone that has. Sorry for the randomness of the questions. I am in grad school and don't really have anyone else to relate to about this. I just want to be back to myself as soon as possible and really appreciate any advice or helpful info anyone has Thanks!
  18. Called Dr - discussed my concerns about small amounts - Told not to stress 1) I may be eating too quickly ( which at times I was) 2) swelling is different for every one. I have an appointment next week and if not better by then, we'll discuss problem more. Today was better - able to eat about 2+ teaspoons tuna-with miricle whip in about 40 mins. Thanks all for you comments/support.

    Very small amounts of food-normal?

hey, glad your doc reassured you. i was where you are and now the amount i can eat is still very small. when i went for my follow up post-surgery i was told that all was fine, we're all unique yadda yadda. but i have issues getting the protein in as i cannot do the protein shakes, i've had several stalls due to not getting enough nourishment and my thought process has been all sorts of whacked out. i am two months out and to give you a peek at my diet for the day it was 1/4 banana, 3 thin slices turkey, slice cheese, 1oz cod... through out the day i drink water and do fine with that. in the beginning i had painfully small sips as well. i hope it helps knowing you are not alone!
  20. Just got approved for gastric sleeve and no need to take classes. Will find out my date tomorrow. Only took insurance 4 days for approval. Are most dates being scheduled 4-6 weeks out from approval? Did some of you get scheduled less than that?

  22. I am one week post op and started the mushy stage - I tried to get cottage cheese down and it would not go. I have been testing things, so I tried some bites of pizza and they went down no problem. I know I shouldnt even try, but I am just curious as to why some foods go down that shouldnt?? Anyone else have this issue? I eat cream of wheat, protein shakes and jello fine, then today I tried a brownie bite and it went straight no issue and so when I took a bite of pizza, I thought this will never go, but it did!!! Puzzles me. Any of you out there can relate? I am not going to push it anymore because I am afraid. I also had a huge hernia repair that the doctor said was one of the biggest he had seen. I have 70 pounds to lose.

    Anyone here from Colorado?

Hey Callieanna--nice to hear from someone so close! Are you getting dumped on like we are? It is crazy here in Pueblo--we don't usually get this much snow! Good luck on your upcoming surgery--you will be so glad you did it! I am only one month post op, but I think it is the best thing I have ever done--well worth the minimal pain and discomfort during the first week or so!
  24. Lou:)

    Hey anyone post op

I'm 25. I started at 260 and three months later I'm at 222. I have always had tight skin. I am 5'8. I don't think I will end up with a lot of loose skin, but I am looking jiggley. I was not always overweight though. I gained 115 lbs in college. My friend went on her own diet last year and she started at 250. She got down to 175. She has been overweight all her life. She had a lot of loose skin. She is 5'4 and is 24 years old. I think it's all about the elasticity of your skin. She broke the diet and is now the same weight as me.
  25. I was so nervous that I just didn't even read any of the negative possibilities. I am 6 weeks out and I feel the best I have in years! I too have been doing so much more than I have in the past. I am extremely excited for the future. The advise I would give it to stick to the diet plan they have for you. My program was Clear liquids for a day. I had trouble even getting liquids down. I just didn't care at all about eating or drinking. I wasn't sick or feeling down just didn't want to eat or drink. 2nd day - week 3 went to "full Liquid" diet. Yogurt, Protein drinks and the like. Week 4 - 5 pureed foods. Week 6 - 7 as the weeks have gone the Water is easier to get down. Soft foods this week. I am looking forward to the change to soft foods. I have lost 64 lbs by following this plan. Be careful of saying it won't hurt me to have this. Your stomach isn't ready for it. I wish you the best of luck. You CAN do this! I also suggest you have a great support team to keep you on your path!
