    Best Decision I Ever Made.

I am band to bypass on 2/2/16. SW 259 CW is 187, so I think you're right on track. Us revisions tend to lose slightly slower because our bodies have already gone through a wls and like with being pregnant, your body remembers so it doesn't go into "shock" like it did when we were banded. Plus, we tend to not be as heavy as some people having bypass for the first time. You're doing great, keep it up! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using the BariatricPal App

    Stumped: hunger, sleeve, RNY

Nah, its definitely hunger.. i know the difference between hunger, head hunger, stomach acid hunger & dehydration... this is definitely real hunger..... after 8 years i definitely know the difference... i wonder if its because i am a revision patient... when i had my band i didn't feel hunger... but with the sleeve i do feel actual hunger.. but it passes as soon as i have a couple of bites.
  4. @@gina171 I did consider sleeve and would have happily gotten one if my surgeon had had some reason for me not to do the rny. But rny seemed like a better option for me based on a lot of different things. - There is much more long-term data on it. - It's considered the "gold standard" of wls. - My bmi was very high at the beginning of the program... about 67. From everything I've observed/researched and learned in the surgeon's seminars, those with higher bmis tend to lose more during the honeymoon phase and continue to lose more/easier in the maintenance phase. I had a looong way to go to get to my goal. - I wanted the accountability of the rny. Many sleevers I talked to simply didn't have dumping, or were able to tolerate slider foods even in the weight-loss phase. I wanted the most strict accountability either surgery could offer, and that meant the rny. - Many sleevers I talked to years out that had started very heavy as I did were not really happy with the larger amount they were able to eat, how easy it was to eat bad foods they should not eat, etc. The rny offers more restriction. True, I can stretch out my pouch just like a sleever can stretch out their sleeve but it seemed to me (and statistics back this up) that rny-ers had more restriction farther out than sleevers, and I wanted that. - I also knew a lot of sleevers who, for whatever reason, wanted revisions years later and couldn't get them because of insurance, etc. I could mess up my rny too, of course, but I wanted the smallest chance possible, and the biggest bang for my buck. - I saw many sleevers, particularly ones with high bmis, entering maintenance with 50, 60, 80 pounds left to lose to reach goal. Of course, this wonderful tool will help you reach goal after maintenance has started with enough work and dedication regardless of the type of wls, but since I had such a long way to go and I wanted to lose weight as quickly as possible to give me a good head start on my life-long road to health, the rny seemed a better option. As it is, I'm not yet in maintenance and I'm about 45 pounds away from my goal. Chipping away. - The only arguments people had against the rny did not really matter to me at all. I have to take Vitamins for the rest of my life? Okay, no problem, most people probably should be anyway. There's a slightly higher risk with the rny? Okay, it's really a tiny extra risk, and with all the added benefits, entirely worth it. It didn't scare me at all. I may deal with malabsorption and other complications? Well yes... but so may the sleeve. The different percentages of risk were so close anyway, it didn't worry me at all to take that leap for what I perceived to be my best chance at getting the best head start I could, which would not only greatly improve my health (it has!) and greatly improve my self-esteem (it has!) but also greatly reduce the difficulties of everyday life (it has!!) as soon as I possibly could. I'm 24 and I left college two years ago because I was so sick. I've been sitting here fixing my body and essentially saving my life, and I really don't want to and can't wait another second to start my life. I'm enrolled and going back to school in about 3 weeks, and I look and feel pretty much normal now. I've had no complications, and I've lost 172 pounds since the day of surgery less than a year ago. This was my dream, and it felt like a silly and ridiculous fantasy before. But here I am, and everything I could have possibly wished for has come true for me. AND BONUS! It only gets better from here! For all these reasons and many more that are more personal and harder to explain, I would choose the rny all over again, and again, and again...
  5. Hi everyone! On July 18, 2016, I got a revision from lap band to duodenal switch. It was supposed to be a one overnight stay...however mine ended up being four nights because I was very sensitive to the anesthesia and pain meds. Then I couldn't keep liquids down. On July 26, I went to my dr's office to get my staples removed and the on call dr (my dr went on vacation after I went home from the hospital) sent an order for me to have a barium swallow done. The radiologist looked at my x rays and called the dr to alert him that the liquids were not moving as they should be rather sitting stagnant. Mind you this was my third swallow (one pre op, one immediately post op, and then this time). I was told to wait in the waiting room to hear from my dr about what the next plan of action was. He called and told me that I needed to be admitted because of dysphasia and potential dehydration. Wednesday, he did an EGD (again my third), but this one was different because it caused me GREAT discomfort that I hadn't experienced before with the others. Thursday, I had a pretty good day. I had ice chips and a couple sips of broth and KEPT IT ALL DOWN!! So when the dr came to see me this morning, I told him that I was doing better and he said that he'd reserved a slot for me for an exploratory lap, but if I felt like I could keep things down then there was no reason to go back to OR. Well, as soon as I started liquids today, I began vomiting again! Due to me having taken in some liquid, I couldn't go under the knife until tomorrow. Ugh!!! I'm in such discomfort and I don't really know what to do. I've been praying for a miracle and believing that whatever is broken or wrong can be rectified soon! 7. I am about a month post-op band to sleeve revision and am having a horrible time with GERD. I started off with one prilosec a day and quickly figured out that that wasn't going to be enough. Moved on to two prilosec a day and that was working but I was going through a bottle of Gaviscon pretty quickly. I was still getting some acid in my throat every day. So my PCP gave me some dexilant samples and for about four days I thought that was the answer. No symptoms of GERD at all. On the fifth day, though, I was taking the dexilant in the morning and getting some acid at night. Yesterday, I got acid burps in the evening and today, in the afternoon. It's like even the dexilant isn't working like it did at first. I've been tracking my food and haven't been eating anything that would offend. I've cut out coffee, even though I used to love it. Staying away from tomatoes and potatoes too. I am really scared that this will get worse and then what do I do? What I'd really like to know - especially from sleeve veterans - is there anyone who had a big problem with GERD at the beginning and then got better? I hear so many of the other kind of stories - the ones where the GERD got so bad that conversion to bypass was the only option. -Anne

  10. It is true that the joint replacements have gotten tremendously better in the last decade. I would not recommend someone refuse replacement solely based on age. There is one aspect of knee replacements (not sure about hips, my problems have been knees so that's what I've researched) that must be kept in mind. The attachment of the artificial joint to the long bones in the leg requires that basically a hole be drilled in the center of the bone, with a post being "glued" in. Nowadays, this is actually the more common point of failure than the joint itself. If someone is very active, especially with high impact activities, this post gets "loose" and the movement causes it to eventually cause too much pain to continue, and a revision is needed, with a slightly larger post than the one before. Younger people are typically much more active than older people, so it increases the risk of needing a revision. Start too young, and you may need more revisions in your lifetime than you have bone for. However, it's just something to keep in mind, and discuss with a doc about the specifics. Improvements to the procedures are happening all the time, and the risk is much less than it was 10 years ago when I first had to start looking at the possibility in my mid-30's. I'm not trying to scare anyone out of replacements young ... if you need them, you need them. To me, it's an informed consent kind of thing. If I'd had to get a replacement in my 30's (thank goodness I had another option) I'd have wanted my doc to give me the straight story on what I could do to make the joint last as long as possible, even if that meant changing my activity choices. The surgery I did have was extensive, with an 18 month rehab. At that point I was having serious issues with normal daily activities, and couldn't exercise much at all even walking because of the pain. If my surgery hadn't been an option, I'd have had a replacement. My other knee has the same damage (congenital condition) and my doc said I would know when things were bad enough to consider surgery on that one. Luckily it isn't there yet. I'll put off surgery as long as I can cope, but the minute the pain starts impacting my quality of life, we'll find a way to fix it.

Expected weight loss at 6 months out

I just had a band to bypass revision last week and my surgeon said the revisions she has done lost weight at the same rate as non-revisions. She also said the main weight loss period is a year to 18 months. Hope that helps.
  12. I'm wondering how much weight to expect at the 6 month mark after a band to RNY revision? Also is the 6 month mark when you slow down? 1 year? I have about 120 to lose. Thanks in advance for your help with my curiosity!

Definitely gets me depressed about it sometimes, but at least the numbers are going down! My ultimate goal is 150lbs (I think!)

    CALLING ALL JULY 2016 SLEEVERS

Your story sounds very similar to mine except for the esophageal erosion. I didn't have that. My band was either too loose or too tight. But I was revised on July 22nd. What I find interesting is that your incisions go up and down your torso. Mine are in a crooked line across my abdomen with a drainage tube on my left hip. I didn't have much pain either except for a horrible unrelenting headache. I figured out later it was caffeine withdrawals. Congrats on your sleeve!!

    CALLING ALL JULY 2016 SLEEVERS

Well i am 1 day post op and i feel pretty darn good. I didnt ask for pain meds a second ago for the pain but i asked for pain meds for my headache. Lol Here is my surgery story. I had the lapband in 2007 and did great with it at first. Then the last two years most everythi ng i would eat or drink would start coming up. Started having severe pain in my esophagus and started throwing up blood. An endoscopy revealed that i had a class c esophageal erosion. The band had to come out Met with surgeon and determined the bnd would come out and he would revise to sleeve!!!! Scheduled my op for july 26 yesterday. Had to be at the hospital at 5 am for an 8 am surgery. Prep for surger i got a patch for nausea to help with any nausea from meds. Then they gave me a shot in my tummy To help with possible clots. Met with sirgeon and andsthesiologist to discuss surgery. Then they gave me versed before wheeling me back to surg. Best "margarita" ever. Then i was totally worry free. I was still awake in or. They hooked me up with all the electrodes and the anesthesiologist said ok its nap time im putting u to sleep. I said just please make sure i wake up. Then make sure i wake up sleeved!!!!! I was so worried there would b such a mess in my body that wiuld have to hold off on the sleeve. Next thing i knew theybwere waking me up. Zero pain. I just said yayy im alive and ong was i sleeved??? They said u sire were. Then my main concern was going to peepee. I had to go really bad. Surgery took an hour and a half and i was in my own room by 11. They immediately got me to the pot. Was sore but not bad pain. No gas pains yet either. I wone up with a binder on which feels great. Especially when i get up to walk or go to the bathroom. Ive probabky walked about 6 laps. Blood pressure has been a little low but they said its expcted because of the pain meds No fever. Nurses are amazing. Getting woken up so often is for the birds tho. Other than that ive been sleeping a lot. Sleep with my binder on and the pumps on my legs to prohibit clots. I had a popsicle and some sips of broth and sips of Water. Did not hurt when first going down but i was apprehensive at first. I did take a swig too large and it was uncomfortable but not painful. Have only drank half bottle of water. But staying hydrated thru iv for now They did my barium swallow this mirning to check for leaks and NO LEAKS. Yayyyyyyy. I feel so so much better without the band in i can already tell a big difference. I have 6 incisions. Some are rather large but im ok with that. Ill attach a pic which shows three i think. Three large incisions mid tummy and the other smaller ones are up under breasts. It was all a success and very pleasant. So happy to be on the loser bench. Fyi BIOTINE mouth rinse helps so so much with dry mouth. So get that for sure. Hope everyone is doing well!!!!!! Here is a pic of my incisions. So excited to begin my healthier happy life!!!!!!! Seriously considering making the change

The hunger feeling that you are having could be from too much acid.. ask your doctor for a PPI. As for the weight gain, if your band is too tight as your barrium swallow shows, it might be a good idea to get a large unfill, let it rest for 2 weeks then go back for a refill... I found that when my band was playing up an unfill would do the trick... But if you were in the red zone you wouldn't be able to eat much food.. unless you are eating soft slider foods. Because you were banded and lost a significant amount of weight be aware that weight loss is much slower when you get revised for a 2nd surgery... for 14kg i would suggest the unfill and refill technique and try going back to basics. What are you currently eating? How many calories do you consume? Are you exercising? Are you tracking your food?
  21. I was banded 9 years ago, and lost 60 kgs. I have recently started gaining weight about 14kgs, feeling hungry all the time, being able to eat lots to not much, some reflux and weirdly a few times woke up like choking on what must be stomach acid. I have had a barrym swallow which showed an over tight band and my esoghegous was slightly dilated. I have a meeting with my surgeon Friday and I am thinking I will just bite the bullet and get my band revised to a sleeve. Any advice?? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  22. So in order for everything to make sense I have to start at the very beginning. In June of 2007 I had my lap band. I weighed 302 pounds at my very heaviest. I am 5 8. I lost down to 156 pounds. Well I guess I should say within 3 months of having my surgery I got pregnant and during my pregnancy I lost 42 pounds and then lost the remainder Within 9 months of having the baby. So I did very well keeping that weight off for so long. Then 4 years ago in January I had a tummy tuck. During my tummy tuck , my surgeon flipped my port. I had my lapband completely unfilled prior to my tummy tuck surgery, because of potential swelling, they thought it would be safer 2 make sure it was completely unfilled. So when I went to have my lap band refilled after the tummy tuck , about six weeks post-op , they were hitting metal. So I ended up going back to the plastic surgeon, he said he could fix it. Well he was a dumbass and did not fix it in fact completely flipped it all the way around instead of just on its side. So therefore I had to go in and get a new port and have my lap band Port totally rearranged, it used to be on my side and now it's directly above my belly button , which is extremely uncomfortable while wearing jeans. Anyway, I have had a very difficult time getting back into what we call the green zone. For so many years I was so easily successful and did so amazing and in the last 4 years it has been nothing but a struggle. I have the 5 CC band width is almost unheard of anymore. They are very difficult to work with, and extremely difficult to get in the green zone. So we will fast forward to the beginning of February 2016 , I was having major issues with my lap band it seemed to have a mind of its own. It just was so super tight or it was completely loose. But I was literally throwing up everytime I ate so at this point I was maintaining right around a hundred and seventy pounds. I went in to see the doctor because I couldn't stand the constant vomiting. There were days I couldn't even get Water to go down. I would sometimes have to sleep sitting up to keep my spit from shooting out my nose with the acid. So he completely unfilled me. I was planning on going in for a revision to the sleeve and starting that entire process, and on February 28th I was in a very horrible car accident where I sustained a head injury, I broke my neck in two places and shattered my foot. I was not able to walk until the beginning of June. So in April when I really started gaining weight because I was unable to move , I went in and asked that they please give me a fill since I was going on an unfilled band. They put in half of what he had taken out before. And again I started the whole throwing up process all over again. Unable to even get liquids to go down. So yes I lost weight but only because I could keep nothing down. I was miserable. So by this time in May when I went and got a fill again, I was up to 212 pounds. And so in June I finally couldn't stand it anymore I went in and ask to take out a half of that fill. So now I feel that I am at a very good place as far as what I think my restriction should be at, I can't eat like a normal person obviously, no bread no tortillas nothing like that but because I can eat anything at all, and it goes down I have gone back up to 211 pounds so I have an appointment on Friday, to talk about switching over to the sleeve. Because the small band is just a nightmare. I have proven that I am very successful with the band however, at this point I do not feel successful at all because I'm pretty much damned if I do and damned if I don't. I cannot find any place that I can lose weight unless I can't eat at all. So, I don't know what the difference would be if I got the sleeve, and could eat basically just like I do now, because I can't lose weight now. So what would be the difference if I went with the sleeve? Has anyone had this experience? Or am I just screwed? Thank you for your advice. Sent from my SM-G928V using the BariatricPal App
  23. Onmyway, I don't have any advise for you, just my story which is not complete yet. I too hesitated to get a revision because of my experience with the band. My current doctor told me in January, "it's not your fault. The band doesn't work". I didn't believe him because I knew I had eaten around my band at times, was totally out of control with cravings at times. But I started the process toward revision because I knew I had to do something. I was desperate. I lost 60 pound slowly with the band and have now gained it all back after having an empty band for 3 years due to complications. I was very conflicted, trying to figure out what to do. I had to go to a nutrition class once a month for my insurance to cover revision and I started going even though I wasn't sure I was going to have surgery again. When I got there, I thought "I've been through all this before. I know all this". And I thought "I don't have to practice. I can do it when the time comes. If it comes". By the third class, something changed for me. I started believing that there was a chance I could be successful with the sleeve. I got 3 books about the sleeve and started reading. The truth is that I am a carb addict and when I am able to stay off of them for a period of time, I don't crave them as much. I just have never really committed myself to staying off of them before. Now I have. I need to. I decided to go for a sleeve. I took an optional fourth nutrition class to finish learning implementing all the new behaviors I would need to follow after the sleeve and I would need to start practicing now. Stopping alcohol was hard as it had become my replacement behavior after the band, one thing that went down easy. Getting down to 1200 calories was hard. Cutting out carbonation was hard. Increasing exercise with my arthritis was hard. But slowly I have implemented everything including going down to 1000 calories a day and 50 gms or less of carbs from veggies and fruit. I'm not losing an ounce yet but I am sticking to it for the first time because I have committed to doing this. I need to lose some weight before surgery to make it safer. I am hoping for the experience that a lot of sleevers have: not being hungry and not having cravings. But even if I don't get lucky with that, I'm going to be as good a sleever as I was bad a bander. All that said, I haven't got my sleeve yet and haven't been successful with it yet. But I think if I can start to believe in myself, you can too.

365 days to a new me

DAY 29 8 days post-op (my count has been off) Puttering along on the road to recovery. Still taking meds but now only twice a day. I got up showered, detangled my hair and put on real clothes today. By the time I was finished with all that I was exhausted! Time for a nap :-) But I did leave the house today and hit up the grocery store. Got lots of yummy sounding stuff for the pureed and soft phases - unfortunately when it comes time to eat I don't actually want them. I live somewhere between no appetite and head hunger. Fortunately the lack of appetite is the more frequent state. Tomorrow is my dr. Appointment and when I will officially state my post op weight loss. Of course I have been weighing everyday- it has been a habit for years and one I am finding hard to break especially now. I already know my loss isn't in the WOW range, but I have lost and for that I am very grateful. I fear that my previous 100# liquid diet experience may mean that I will lose more slowly this time. I had been mentally "planning" to lose at the same rate that I lost before but after reading about some people's band to sleeve revisions on here I know it might not work out that way. So now I am actively trying to remove the timeline aspect of my goal setting. Which is really hard. One, because I am such a control freak, two, because I am such a planner and three, because I like to visualize in order to motivate. And visualizations are always better if you are very specific. Oh yeah and I am impatient lol. Oh well. I know all I can control are inputs. The outputs are in God's hands. So I will just sit here and continue to sip... 25. Contact Bill@bariatricpal.com. It was the easiest thing I have ever done medically. I am having surgery this Thursday July 28 revising a sleeve to mini gastric bypass. The MX team will pick me up in San Diego and drive me across to TJ. I will have surgery in a hospital and be there 3 days. Then I will move to a recovery condo for 2 days, with nurses and doctors checking on me. I will have 2 leak tests before I leave. Dr. Illan is my surgeon and just got back from a conference with Dr. Rutledge the surgeon that started the MGB. I was sent a questionnaire to start with but it was not very long. They have 2 years nutritional support and the surgeon has a Facebook page you can post anytime. I am super excited and have had many friends go with this group.
